  • This is a quick video on how to coat/seal the inside of your subwoofer box to gain SPL/DB for free! I used automotive rubberized undercoating I found at Autozone for around $7 a can. It is also used for sealing, rust prevention and sound deadening! It is night and day!

    Been doing that for years. People always wanted to know why my bass always sounded louder then theirs.
    Fiber glass resin works really well too.

    I rolled on flexseal and brushed on nice thick coats on my joints and corners on the fourth order I just built, I had some vibrations so I figured I'd have to add supports loosing air volume but tried the flexseal thanks to this video and everything worked out great... Didn't loose and cubic feet, no more vibrations, and not only able to hear the difference of loudness but the meter didn't lie thanks for the tip

    One of the coolest boxes I've ever seen was made out of 2 inch plexiglass when you look through the back windows is that full size van it look like it's 15s were floating! I will say it hit harder than almost any box I'd heard with just two 15s. The amazing part was he was using a set of mofo 15s not the best but they do the job for the price that he paid and it was amazing. I have seen two Sundowns not able to keep up with it. Granted his box cost more than His 15s even if he would have bought in six. But the plexiglass box worth it both look and sound

    great information on this vid. Wood and mdf IS so porus if not sealed totally blows the Q of the box....with biggest noticeable problems in sealed boxes. Simply caulking the joints is a waste of time if you don't bother to seal the surface inside. That undercoating is great stuff and works well. Ive also used epoxy resin.. even in a pinch used kilz primer/sealer with good results. Thanks for the vid

    I use a the two part bar top clear coat you can lay down 1/4" thick layers on each inside of box simply by rotating after it cures which is fast, obviously it strengthens all boxes but makes it very easy to strengthen a misshapen box as well.

    I need to build a new box for my 10 inch punch p1. Its been a champ so far running off a 500wrms rockford amp. But its only in a small sealed 3/4 mdf generic box right now. Cant imagine how much better it could be in a real box. People are already surprised when I tell them its only a small 10 inch.
    I will probably do this to my next box. Its a pretty good idea.

    I am reading all the comments and a lot of them talk about fiberglass resin and pouring it on. I think that's a great idea but don't stop there get some fiberglass cloth that is right next to resin on the shelf then pour the resin slap the cut cloths of fiberglass into the resin with the each sheet grained to 45 degrees from the last one and boom you will have one hellofa solid box. I just did a box for my dc level 6 18 m4 using this method and ended up saving a lot of weight because I was able to get serious results from 1/2 in mdf and about 8 layers of fiberglass wrapped around it.

    • @goldsilvereagle9311
      @goldsilvereagle9311 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JasonH420 I did seal the inside. I basically turned the box at every angle and poured a resin on every joint on the bottom. Let it harden. Reposition the box, and hit every bottom joint/angle with resin. After that I went back in and glassed all walls and angles with resin and the woven mat. On the outside, I just resined the box. I wood glued everything and used 2" crown staples, probably to many staples. But I hadn't planned on glassing it in at that point either. Is it overkill? Ehhhh? Will I have to make another box? Never. Unless it some crazy band pass. I can say that box has zero air leakage at any joint. I also feel the glass has eliminated any flex in the MDF. . They pound. I love Sundown Audio. Call them with any questions, they're happy to answer. And as far as returns go. Top Notch. I am a customer for life. Good Luck Brother. Let me know what you think if you dive into it.

    Stinkyarmpitbass , I have a set of dark audio nko 12s . I'm running a daul sealed box that is in the shape of a L to allow the box to sit in the upper shelf of a crown Vic trunk. It has a angled back/top almost like a fast back look to it. Its at 1.486 after sub displacement . my question is ...
    How do I figure out what damping will do my over all tuning? Right now I have the subs crossed at 85hrz and it seems to blend well but I think the higher hz might be inducing some ringing in the box or the actual cars bracing sheet metal. I would like some input . I'm not a big fan of Polly as I smoked a sub from it sucking it in and I had a sub get hot like it didn't clip or short, it got hot as I tend to run sealed enclosure s.

    • @stinkyarmpitbass6259
      @stinkyarmpitbass6259  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Sorgdrager to each their own but for me I cross mine over at around 60-65 hz, I like that low bass. Damping your box has a ton of variables and outcomes. A lot depends on your goals. My SPL metering buddies reinforce and deadened to meter high bit I have friends who prefer specific woods while building for specific resonance characteristics and goals. There's a lot to it and I'm far from knowing it all.

      Running sealed boxes in the trunk of a vehicle is kind of defeating the purpose of having sealed boxes. You would be better off running ported band pass boxes with the ports coming through the rear deck so as to pressurize the cabin not the trunk. You should also dynomat the shit out of the car. It's the biggest single improvement you can make to the overall sound quality of your car audio system. Superglue all of the emblems and badges to the vehicle as well. Keeps them from rattling every time the base hits. My 2 cents.

      Nah. Polyester resin isn't going to dampen the box any and if it is applied to any thickness without using fiberglass mat or cloth reinforcement then it is almost certainly going to shatter once the box starts flexing and it separates from the MDF.
      I suppose one could brush on a thin coat to seal the MDF if you wanted to (might be good for marine use) but that wouldn't have much effect on the sound of the box. If you want to use fiberglass then build the box out of fiberglass.

I can't say how many DBs you'll gain but the concept is dealing/hardening the surface of the enclosure walls/sides. This is beneficial in any box. If I could make a box out of steel I would lol!

      +Xavier Mcfadden yeah the Strictly competition guys are on a completely different level when all they do is meter and try to hit high SPL scores. The majority of them build a wall in the car, literally a wall in their car sealing off the front from the rear and go with a Fourth or sixth order design enclosure. You should check out those enclosure designs and see just how much air they move. It's pretty insane

      Daniel Pottenburgh they are awesome and they fly below the radar. Not too many people know about them and I had zero issues with them. My opinion of them is that they are super efficient and are loud but also very musical. Before box rise and other variables at one point I was running around 3500 W to each one. They ate it for breakfast and spit it out for lunch.

    do you have a Spl meter,If you meter that one 8 inch sundown, spraying that in that hard wouldn't give a harder surface,now resin with hardener,would. that an accountant spray doesn't get hard enough to stiffen the wood that's just for looks, use your SPL meter and test two boxes one with the undercoating spray in it versus one with resin and hardener in it and use your SPL meter and you will see.

    The JL W7 is the main driver that runs a 3 ohm load! The W6 V3 of course runs dual 4 ohm coils, as well as the other models that either rely on dual 4 ohm or even 2 and 4 ohm single voice coils! Another big thing to mention is there are two types of wood used by box manufacturers, one is made of small 1/8" wood particles and the higher quality wood is made of particles that are about 1/10th the size! Both are often labeled as MDF, but one is better suited for cabinetry and the other is often chosen by companies for it's price!
    When it comes to actually applying internal sound deadening to a box, they do sell brush or spray applied products that are car audio specific! Like Lizard Skin, ALS liner, Liqui-damp, spray-dead, spectrum by second skin and others that would be more appropriate to apply inside a subwoofer box, plus they are often non-toxic, non-hazardous, and non-flammable! Yeah it does cost more, but rubberized undercoating is often applied to the under-carriage by dealers to prevent rust only and is easily scraped off with your finger even after being dry for months, as you said fumes are hazardous and it is toxic "Petroleum based" contains Asphalt/Synthetic polymers, Toluene, Methyl Acetate and Propane -"Green House Gas" consisting primarily of Methane!
    Purchasing a custom built box with proper bracing that is subwoofer specific would prevent a box from flexing! Plus the True MDF which most audio shops use for installs actually is very solid and is designed to have a shiny surface that is only impermeable and becomes altered by moisture exposure! They also have choices of thickness and if you ask for 1" you will get 1"! Basically what you are seeking to do is adding density to a subwoofer box, it won't prevent flex! Which Audio specific dampening material will do, just at a slightly higher cost than spray can versions!
    The benefit of buying real audio specific dampening is you can use the excess to apply to the vehicles panels at a cheaper cost than adhesive backed brands! Remember Dampening materials for car audio will not prevent frequency resonance, only control and manage it so it is less noticeable! But the more power "Force" you apply to those surfaces at the natural resonance frequency the more noticeable it will be even with dampening material! It is Physics!
    Just search Resonance! But for me, I will stick to JL Audio!

      I've had both the SA 12s and 15s and they're one of the best bangs for the buck! I loved them. They're very clean for that price point, they get pretty low and they're ruler flat other than one small bump around 46hz on the analyzer, but I picked up a 13w7ae since I already had a 1000/1 And I was amazed! Now I'm running two 13w7 and two 13w7s along with a 300/4 and kappa components through a pioneer 80prs and couldn't ask for more!

    Uh this is bad advice. First don’t use pre made boxes have a box built to the parameters of your drivers so that you get the best out of them. Install is the most important part without that don’t matter what you got. I had one built for my DC lvl 4’s by cherry man customs it’s built like a tank and looks sweet, neon’s, lexon windows for looking at those 3 big magnets 🧲! It’s a nice box and built to my specs. I think it was $850 shipped to my door but it was well worth it. It makes the system. So yea don’t do this just have a pro do it right or do it yourself it’s not hard even if you can’t do computers and that stuff you can have them done for like $35 on SSA. Aaron will sketch you up whatever you want and if you talk to some forum guys they may do it for free or share previous designs they know to work for certain subs and cars.

    i had 2 jl audio w7s and when i had them people always asked how did i get my subs to sound so good and looked confused when i had them bumpin and they slammed with that beautiful clear smooth sound and jls bass is way deeper sundowns bass its just harder but not soothing. but i did switch up and got 2 sundown 12s and they slammed way harder the bass was just hard but did not sound no where as good as the jls did and even tho they were more powerful they did not sound as clear and smooth thats why we pay for jl audio and like them they hit super hard with great quality. its funny how people hate on jls because they cant afford them so they dog them of course sundown hit harder there way more watts and rms powered and there for competition which sound like shit honestly. but i sold the sundowns and stayed with jl audios because i missed that amazing sound and its different from any other sound of woofer i've heard but I hear the orion hccas the new ones sound like jls but way louder so im thinking about getting them. but anyway people are stupid when they say jls aint as loud as sundowns and keep comparing them with other woofers that are for competition there different speakers and some are to slow to know jls are sound quality not made for competition but they also can break your windows and do the hair trick there amazing but i do think there overpriced and i agree with that they definitely need to knock it down a bit.
