    Its rankings have dropped in the last ten years but this is mostly due to reduced government funding. The student quality is exceptional and can compete on any level in the world. Many exceptional American and International students attend McGill due to the outrageous tuitions in the States and England. Virtually any McGill student could succeed and do well in an Ivy or Oxbridge university.

      Here's what you can do. You can apply for an easier college and attend that one for a year. Aim for very high grades at this lesser college and then you can apply to transfer to Mcgill. Then Mcgill will only look at your high college grades. And this is for anyone in a similar situation.

    Great video but I partially disagree on one point. I agree that getting in is extremely hard, count on having a 95% + gpa to get in, but staying in is just as hard. Most students will experience a 15-20% gpa decrease. The work is voluminous and the marking is wicked. If you have never failed an exam or a course in your life be prepared. Really smart students struggle. Some students will drop out because of the hard marking but making it to the end is a great accomplishment.

    • @doseofyasmeen
      @doseofyasmeen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You make a great point! If a straight A student is going to McGill they definitely should be prepared for a drop in their GPA...
      The work load is a crazy amount and you really are "competing" with top tier students. Its challenging but its very rewarding!

    just an advice for anyone looking to study in mtl (or anywhere in qc really) real soon, keep in mind that the covid situation here is not great, and that we do have a lot of sanitary measures that you may or may not have in your country. i have been very interested recently into applying to McGill but i worry about the grades part ngl lol, im a senior doing a french baccalaureate and in our program we have a thing called “Specialité” which is basically us picking 3 subjects (since im a Serie S student i did Math, physics/chem and bio last year) to focus on, and by senior year, we have to remove one subject. Last march i removed math cuz i didnt technically know what i wanted to do, and i thought it would keep my grades steady (mind you, when we remove a subject we’re supposed to do an exam for it) Right now im currently looking into Architecture but im afraid the fact that i dropped math would be the issue. im also wanting to do the SAT’s soon that way the math in there could help up abit, i have no idea lmao. i know that there are plenty of other universities i could look into, and i have no idea if you’ve got any tip for this stressful student, but i dont wanna lose hope on my dream uni!!

    What school years to they look at
    like do they ask for my senior year grades?
    Is it necessary to have a perfect english to go there or just the basics?
    Do they ask for the SAT I and II?
    Are most of the students french educated?
    How are the dorms there?
    Thanks for the video btw it was really helpful

    • @doseofyasmeen
      @doseofyasmeen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sandrine A hi!! Depends on your program; if you’re in the Ontario system they typically ask for gr11&12, but usually they ask for gr10&11& your first semester grades for senior year. If they accept u based on that, it’s going to be a conditional acceptance; so, the second semester grades of your senior year determines whether or not you are ACTUALLY accepted. Most of the students are international so everyone speaks English but there are tonnnssss of frenchies!! They ask for your SAT based on your program; for me, I was in the IB program with A level English literature at the university level so they didn’t need my proof of English (also I’m canadian so that’s prob why they didn’t ask). I personally haven’t lived in dorms but most people seem to like them! Hope this helps!!!!

    Hi! I'm from the US and I am really interested in McGill but I only concern is the language barrier. I know it is an English speaking university, but I was wondering about the French to English speaking ratio within the city itself. By the time I go to college I will have three years of French under my belt, and while I am planning on continuing French at college, will that be enough for when I'm in the city? Great video!

    • @doseofyasmeen

      Hi!! Thank you!! Honestly knowing a little French goes a long way! If you go to mtl with 3 years background in French you’ll be fine since you’ll be able to hold up a conversation - and your French will improve once you get there!!

    • @paulm1143
      @paulm1143 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not trying to discourage you, but keep in mind that the french spoken in quebec is not the french spoken in France and that is traditionally taught in Us High School. It is still french, but those in Quebec pronounce the vowels a little differently, use different grammatical functions i.e. de que instead of dont, and use different idioms/phrases. I would recommend doing a little more research on Quebec french. Think of the difference between British English and American English, the difference between Quebec french and Parisan French is just a tad bit greater. Best wishes, God bless you.

    Hi, thank you for this informative video. I had a question related to McGill application process. On their website it says that they will be looking at top 5 gr 12 academic courses. However application deadline is usually at the start of February. I'm aware that they give you a conditional offer based off of your gr 12 interim marks but my issue is that I won't have 5 gr 12 academic courses in my first semester to submit. So should I submit the courses that I do have plus my gr 11 marks? Or is there something I need to be aware of? Thank you!

      @doseofyasmeen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thanks for sharing!! Your mental health is always the priority! The truth i, there is good quality of life all over Canada; but personally, I chose McGill over UofT because Montreal is a student friendly city (its actually the student capital of North America)! Its plentiful, convenient, affordable, cultural, very diverse, etc. Toronto is a big city full of opportunities; its fast paced, busy, and full of life (kind of like a mini New York). Housing and living expensive are a bit higher in toronto (but average income is higher too). SO both can be good depending on what you are looking for as a student! I recommend researching more about student life in both cities!

      100%! There is a community for everyone. Personally, I don’t go out much and there is always things for me to do and people for me to do them with :) I made a lot of friends at uni through mcgill clubs and in class, I think it’s super important to get involved on campus!

      McGill is extremely well known internationally for its science programs. Very challenging. I remember reading a story once about grad students in Harvard running into difficulty on a robotic/programming issue and a visiting McGill student solved it on the spot.

    Hi, why didn't you live on campus? I know that you don't live on campus but maybe you know people that did, can you make a video about the different Mcgill residences? I like partying and going out, but I also want a residence where I could study without so many distractions. Any recommendations?

    • @abouttime5000
      @abouttime5000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Living in a dorm for year 1 is a good idea. You will make friends that will most likely be with you for the entire degree. They will also form the basis for your off campus housing in year 2. Nice to know who you will share personal space with. Learning and figuring out the ways of McGill can be accomplished better with lots of student perspectives. Residences can make this happen. Try and get your own room as you will be doing a great deal of studying and concentration is really important.

    • @sarag7011
      @sarag7011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you don't need it for uni- everyone speaks English- and if you stay downtown you won't need it but the further you want to go from the McGill/downtown bubble the more you will need French. Quebec is a francophone province and they care a lot about speaking French and holding onto their culture. If you want to experience Montreal as a city in all it's awesomeness, basic French can be really helpful. The only way French might hold you back in a uni context is that it might be hard for you to find internships during your studies if you aren't basic level bilingual- but there are exceptions.

      if ur Canadian then no, but if ur intl then its so expensive. I live in the US and intl tuition at mcgill is more than most of the schools im applying to in the states, and college in the US is really expensive.
      However unlike UCAS, intl students can get aid and scholarships at canadian unis!
