I feel like my day job is this elastic band holding me back from entering exactly the same kind of lifestyle, and I'm always pulled slightly into it (each weekend) before being pulled back. it's funny how much video games actually confine you
while so many people brag about a game giving you a ton of imagination and freedom, it barely gives you any at all
there's nothing stopping you from entering the lobby of a hotel, walking around the halls, going up and down the elevator, and then leaving
but in a game, you can't even open the doors, and if you could, then the lobby is all that is accessible, but if there is more such as walkable hallways and usable elevators, then it's not a game with a hotel, it's a game about a hotel

    • @ashketchum9566
      @ashketchum9566 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@jockeyfield1954 i think what people mean when they talk about games giving freedom is social rules being absent or different in a game. One can go into a random hotel if they want to, but it would be awkward at best, and trespassing at worst (I don't know what exact situation could lead to it, but it's a possibility); if this were to happen in a game, it wouldn't be a huge problem because of the fsct that games are different from out real life, so what we do in a game has no consequences in respect to our real life.
But your point is correct, the real world is objectively a lot more freedom-centric than any game can practically hope to become

When I was at Bangor Uni I would go to the docks at 2am, the security guard wouldn't mind, letting you wander among the boats. Hearing people return from clubs in the distance, the water lapping against the concrete, silently passing the odd dog walker. And as for the bit about sharing the moment with someone, I had once shared a similar moment with a friend. We were trekking along a canyon forest and came upon a cliffside that overlooks most of the path. And at that very moment, everything went silent. No hikers around, no birds, no insects - complete and utter silence, which washed me with a sense of serenity. We just sat there for a good few minutes. No words were shared. We didn't even have each other within out vision. We just sat there and be in the moment. Having someone else with you lets you know that what you experienced was real.

Playing games, drinking, and talking with your friends in a group is a good sign of a friendship, but being able to just *be* around someone without open discussion is an indescribable experience. I have been waiting for this type of video for SO LONG. I absolutely loved watching "The Simpler Things in Life". In fact, that video solely created my desire to try to write down, document, and record the mundane and random aspects of my life. I mostly really love the videos like the ASDA ones, stuff you posted back 6-7 years ago. Stuff like the walks with Vexxie also gives me a feel of nostalgia like any other: it doesn't feel like an old forgotten memory, more like a warm fuzzy feeling.
Just like you, I remember to talk a walk around my house and look at nooks and crannies every few months to see how it is. Ever since the virus, I've had zero motivation to go outside. A few weeks ago, I finally decided to go take a walk to a park, and just filmed it. Nothing out of the ordinary, but I think that the 30 minutes of silent walking is what I'll think about. I used to go to that park constantly when I was in elementary school.

I don't think I've ever understood a video as deeply as this one. I think I first got this feeling playing counter strike, as I'd load up maps and play against bots. Sometimes I'd just stare at the skyboxes and wonder what it'd be like if the map extended that far, into the distant mountains or towns. Overwatch was even better, because their maps are so detailed and thought provoking. Of course, as with real life, it's never as interesting as you imagined when you actually get there, but just staring and enjoying that feeling of longing and excitement is wonderful. Even staring at areas I've been to outside village that are a significant distance distance away can make them feel completely new and captivating.
I've always dreamed about meeting another weirdo that enjoys exploring during the night on one of my walks in my village or uni campus / city, just to hear them talk about their own experience. But like you said, I honestly don't think it's the same with someone else, and you lose out on the quiet time alone where you get to think. Plus I'm probably more likely to end up stabbed to death approaching someone at night before I do anyways. I don't feel like I've explained myself properly or fully, but I hope whoever is reading understands what I mean.

Now I live in a different city from when I first commented, it's not as entertaining to explore. But I do live very close to the waterfront, and it gives me a direct view of another town on the other side of the water. When I go at night, I get to look at all the lights lit up, the little car headlights moving through the darkness and disappearing every so often, and I can see the feint outline of the hills. I can literally stare at it for hours. I don't know if I ever even want to cross the bridge and explore the area because it's far more entertaining not knowing and imagining what it's like, what people are doing. Because it's probably the same as my city. Either way it's beautiful, I hope in the future when I move again I get to live somewhere that's really special to explore. If I do I'll be sure to come back to this video.

I feel the same way, I love walking around at night. It is almost like exploring a new but familiar world. This really reminded me about an interview from one of my favourite poets (crudely translated):
“I write mostly at night. Because of the calm, because of the darkness that kind of leans in towards the window. It's almost as if the window is about to break.
And one's living room is like an illuminated cell surrounded by darkness. At night, you dream.
At night, you can sometimes sense some possibilities for something different. At night, you wait for the next day and what it can bring you.
It is something about anticipation and hints and the dreams that are suppressed during the day.
You feel more powerful or in possession of the ability to create something.
You can go for a walk on the streets and there is not a human being around for several kilometers. The city is on a break, it's totally dead.
And you can go for a walk and sense how the next day could be a totally new day where the world could be completely changed.
It's almost like time stands still at night. - Michael Strunge”

It will be amazing to finally visit a foreign country that I actually understand the language of. Sadly, the motorcylce trip that I planned to celebrate my graduation last year didn't come to fruition.

I've often walked around cities at night in a similar fashion, mostly Bristol after having enough of a party but not being tired enough to sleep. I enjoyed just walking around and watching people.
Woods have their own strange attraction in the dark too. The sounds the mice make as you walk past, the sudden jumps of a dear frightened by you being near or meeting someone else and wondering if they also buried a body and whether they're thinking the same thing.

I also do this. There's such a comforting feeling walking around at night, the world doesn't seem so big and expansive, you can only see what's nearby and well-lit. It's like an art display where certain things have lights on them and that's what you're meant to focus on.

Man, the combination of your music, voice, footage, and most of all your ability to articulate your inner thoughts makes for some special videos. Personally, I never understand how people get bored. I feel completely content with myself, my thoughts, and my hobbies- constantly thinking about topics as simple as my next Minecraft build or as complicated as philosophy and religion. I feel that you are the same; you find interest in the simple things in life that others often take for granted or overlook. I hope you continue making videos like these.

This video is poetry. In the summer of 2019 I used to run at night to avoid the highest temperatures. And regardless of day or night I would often run places I'd never been before, just choosing randomly what path to pick at every crossing. Even as a young man with a headlamp, the woods at night are all caps TERRIFYING. All the sounds you hear, how little you see and the occasional hyper reflective eyes of wild animals staring back at you. Combine this with the slight trance/high you get from long distance running and you'll experience a kind of primal feeling that most people probably go their entire lives without experiencing. In 2020 I stopped running because with the pandemic there were no more races to work towards. And I had TOTALLY forgotten this feeling right up until the moment I watched this video. It's not even quite the same thing as what you describe but the footage combined with your choice of words just put me right back into that place.
I hope you still read comments because I want you to know that this vid had an effect on me like very few other pieces of media ever

I can relate to that feeling. Leaving after 8 and going home at night is such a nice feeling. Sometimes I go to the park and exercise there and since no one is usually at the park I can use whatever equipment I want! Tho it does become mundane after walking the same route. So I pick different ones. There is one optimal path to my house but I usually take a way longer one

I used to be scared of the night, scared of what lays in the shadows. So scared I wouldn't leave my room at night unless the lights were left on. At some point I started to push myself, I'd go outside at night to put rubbish in the bins, the used to be the scariest part of the day but I grew to look forward to it. I took walks around in the evening and I'd get home right when it got dark. I love the night, the eeriness and the atmosphere isn't found anywhere else in the world. The night still scares me and that's the feeling I love. Not knowing who is out at this time, what animals I might come across. It's an amazing feeling that just can't be described with words. Yet, you described it perfectly with this video

I don't usually comment on videos, but like others this really struck a chord with me. Of course we all take something a bit different away from this video, but I'd like to share what it evoked in me. We really interact with the world differently at night, don't we? This reminds me of when I used to work late, and get out around midnight. I lived in a more ruralish area, so everyone drove, but it would've been nicer if I could've walk. But if I had the next day off, I'd stop at a gas station for a drink and snack, and just drive around. Didn't really matter where, just driving around with all my windows down and I'd sometimes listen to my favorite local college radio station, whatever silly program they had on at that hour, but more often than not, just the sounds of the night were enough. The crickets, the frogs, random animal sounds (the occasional spooky fox scream), the wind moving through my car. I loved driving by a creek, or an especially dense tunnel of trees, the damp and cool feeling the air had. There's not really anything that can replicate that feeling to me. Currently I live in a city where I don't feel comfortable walking around in (at least not my neighborhood), but I still walk and explore when I can. It's something that I should do more of. Like you said in your video, just let my mind and its imagination wander, no real inhibitions, no worries/anxieties about life. It's times like those where I feel the most at ease and comfortable with myself. Phil, if you do by chance read this, I want to say please and I mean please never change to appease someone else. I have an immense respect for how you approach youtube, how your videos are. Whether it's more personal experiences like this video, or discussing a CS:GO topic. I really do wish more people shared thoughts/experiences like the ones in this video. As silly/cliche as it sounds, I sincerely believe it's things like this that truly make us human. Our innate sense of curiosity, and powerful endless imagination. Connecting with the environment, world, universe that we live in.

The night will always have a special place for me. As a kid, when my dad was bringing me back from late dinners with his friends, I would always prefer to walk a bit on the fresh night, a place I could not go in normal times, where everything looked so different from usual. I think the night is kind of another world, where everything is the same but in an really apeasing way. A place where I can trully be on my own, after a long day of exhausting social interactions. I can finally stop thinking and just enjoy the calm and the fresh air.
There is so much to say about night, those with friends, the sad ones, the ones during summer or with a stunning starry sky. The ones at home or miles away from it. Thanks for this amazing video Philip and please keep going :)

It wasn't until I started waking up at 4am for work that I realised just how differnt the world can be at such an early hour. There's no more beautiful time than when the first glimmer of light breaches the horison. Very few, if any, people are about. Nothing but your footsteps or the few birds tweeting to break the silence.

I had this experience back when I was in London. The comparason, between the streets full of people in daylight and the empitness of the night was far beyond words. It was a sense of freedom that I have, the city streets just for myself to enjoy, the quietness of the Tames and the smell of nothing but...well...not the most refreshing air but at least less saturated.
It makes me feel a little bit of envy towards Phillip the fact that now more then ever, night-walking in Argentina is quite dangerous, even in the little city that I live.
I´ve always like to walk at night, but it never felt the same as with London. Perhaps was the security I felt, the feeling of beeing in an unseen place, or something else.

I loved to wake up 7a.m. in the morning during my high school times, in winter season, and appreciate the same path to my school now bath in dim darkness instead of the morning sun. The atmosphere was completely different, like I wasn't going to school as usual, where do I need to go and why I'm up when it doesn't seem like morning... It was my imagination trying to process but still enjoying the "change" of scene. But what blew me away in combination with the dark mornings of winter at the same hour was the fog and mist or morning drizzles I encounter the moment I open the door.... This little natural phenomenons made my forget the tireness and sleepiness and full me with sense of adventure, scaning my surrondings for an unusual presence. Those were the coolest memories of my long walks to school in the morning :)

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels like this when walking outside at night. I mean, I knew I wasn't, the answer to "am I the only one-" is always no, but it's still nice to hear it directly.
One of the reasons I have thousands of hours in Gmod is because I would download a ton of maps and explore them, because it gave me a similar feeling. The feeling of being alone, but not (too) lonely.

For me the night walk experience is not mysterious but a nostalgic trip through my home town.
I come from a small country town where I have grown up my entire life. Every street has memories of my childhood, like my elementary school, or the parks me and my friends played at as kids.
I've walked the same dozen streets hundreds of times but they only deepen my connection to home. (Also the stars in the night sky are 👌, city folk just won't understand)
Recently I've started going for night walks with my dad and its made me realize that once I move away, the time we spend together will drastically decrease. Make sure you appreciate the good times while you are in them!

This video speaks to me on personal levels. At night, everything seems more interesting. It's empty, and I feel more wonder than I would've when just walking in the daytime. I also feel a tinge of excitement. I feel the same type of excitement, awe, and fear from space. Maybe that's why I like sci-fi. Its appeal to me is tenfold when I see pictures taken of space and I feel genuine awe of what's out there. It has the same characteristic of the feeling I get when just exploring the same places under a different set of lighting and circumstances, having new eyes for the things you glance over in less than a second. It's honestly an overwhelming and mostly indescribable feeling.

I once pulled an all nighter studying for a calculus test. I decided to take a well earned break and ride my bike around my suburb as the sun was rising. There is a ambience you pick up on while being alone in public in the middle of the night. It's like the source code of everything is readable for once and everything makes sense.
