There's no rule that Claudia can't turn people, it's that she physically can't do it. Her body is too small to have enough blood for a successful turning as the fledgling has to drink their fill of their makers blood for it to work. Claudia tried several times in episode 5 of season 1 to make herself a companion but it never worked for her. That's part of the flight she has with Louis and Lestat after they discover all the bodies she hasn't disposed of properly.
@@ourcrazystupidpodcastlol I was so focused on answering this I forgot to say I love your analysis of the show and these videos! Can’t wait for you to see the last 2 episodes!
The thing about Armand is that he is definitely so powerful and could change everything that’s happening but his trauma has given way to ‘learned helplessness’. He doesn’t really make proactive decisions (I think he’s certainly less premeditative than ppl assume). He told Louis to take Claudia and get out of Paris bcuz it’s dangerous, but Louis says “no I’m staying & we’re all gonna be happy” Armand never tries again or pushes back. Armand is a character that can’t relinquish control or trust others (which comes from his trauma) but yearns to roleplay the power dynamics of his abuse & surrender to another (also from the same trauma). Like he HATES being coven master “the job I do not want” & romanticizes a partner making decisions for him, but he needs to feel safe & that comes from maintaining the control he has ie. “NO. I Cannot.” when Louis had suggested giving up the position Armand doesn’t really take responsibility for anything bcuz he doesn’t perceive himself as an active participant, he feels trapped & powerless when he’s in control & one of the most powerful.
This is just conjecture because the show never answers it, but I truly don't believe that Louis asked Armand to erase his memories. Louis likes to carry his pain and dwell on it, it's out of character for Louis to ask for this. I also think Armand was afraid of the can of worms he opened when he included Lestat in the San Francisco situation. He doesn't like that Louis remembers just how much of his true self Armand revealed to both him and Daniel that night. How can he continue the charade of being the submissive partner if Louis knows that when he's truly angry, Armand will show the full extent of his power? The complete truth is that Armand has always had the upper hand in his relationship with Louis and that's something that Armand does not want acknowledged. I'm so glad you picked up on the way that Armand and Louis don't resolve their problems. I have my own opinions on this and even though it's not a spoiler (because it's my own opinion), I'll hold off until y'all finish the show to make sure it's not too suggestive. I hope we spin back to that.
Now also remember Lestat said “the vampires of Europe are vicious”. He didn’t lie. Remember we are receiving a biased recounting of who Lestat was and is.
there is a rule that only the coven Master can turn someone. Armand has never made another vampire. Because the vampire Bond Cuts you off from your creations and the love turns to poison. Everybody who has joined the coven has been made by someone else. ❤ that's why when Louis made Madeline he slit his wrist and get her blood out of his body. He is now forever linked to someone he really doesn't know. Sitting in the chair he even said that he doesn't even care that Claudia is leaving. Because the bond that he shared with Madeline was greater in that moment
I interpreted Louis’s look at Armand after he says “are you asking me or telling me” differently. It seemed more to be disappointment that Armand wouldn’t do something that Louis asks out of love for him. Notably Louis does not force him (because he actually can’t force him to do anything). I also personally don’t believe Louis asked Armand to make him forget the 70s. What we’ve seen of Louis is that he is desperate to remember. If he did ask why not let him remember that he asked or when he wants to remember why not give him his memories back. In both the not turning Madeline and not remembering the 70s Armand gets what he wants while it still appears that he gave Louis the power to decide. Also Claudia can’t physically turn Madeline. And a coven rule is that only the leader (Armand) is allowed to make vampires. So technically it’s against the laws for Louis to make her as well if Armand refuses to.
In the restaurant scene with Armand, Louis, Claudia and Madeline, someone pointed out that Madeleine mistaken Armand for Lestat when she said she could feel Louis' love for Armand and asked why Louis doesn't tell Armand he loves him. She probably felt Louis' love for Lestat because of how much Louis always thought of Lestat. Louis also explicitly told Armand he loved him but never said it to Lestat.
I love your guy's commentary, Lestat taught Louis to not have emotional conversations, and he carried it over to his relationship with Armand. A specific e.g is when he is talking about almost biting his nephew and he tells him about the opera
Remember that Armand has spent most of his existence acting in service. First by his captors, Marius, The Coven before and after Lestat and now Louis. That’s his baseline so when Louis wavered about that power dynamic Armand felt off kilter and he reverted back to his allegiance to the coven. He’s a creature of habit who will sometimes weaponize his allegiance like he did in SF to punish Louis. Armand doesn’t really care who he love bombs as long as they’re loyal to him.
13:47 I wouldn’t really call their behavior as reckless it’s more so they were very clueless they didn’t even know killing Lestat was breaking one of their laws or even what a law was to begin with until they got to paris
I love y’all’s takes. I definitely agree it’s important to think about the power dynamics in Louis and Armand’s relationship. Their roleplay is roleplay because it flips the irl power dynamics on its head. In their relationship, Armand had more power because he is 500 years old and has the ability to alter Louis’ memory and control vampires with his mind. Furthermore, Armand is the coven master, which gives him the power of “life and death,” meaning he could kill both Claudia and Louis if he so decides without any repercussions. I want to emphasize, Armand was the leader of the coven and had many more vampire powers than Louis and Claudia; he is the one with the material power. We see this earlier in the season when Armand went to kill Louis and only decided not to because Louis decided to engage with him romantically. We also see this when Armand forces Claudia to do the baby lulu play, and when he mind zaps the entire coven. Also, Louis has no desire to be a part of the coven, but they (a group led by Armand for most of the season) still try and force their way of life on him and govern him by their laws (which he has minimal knowledge of). When he doesn’t agree to abide by their rules, they (including Armand) threaten him and Claudia with death. I also think it’s important to note that we don’t really see who initiated the maitre/arun roleplay between the two or if it was mutual. Also, like you said, Armand has the power to stop their roleplay at anytime. There are no power structures (like the threat of violence or the backing of a coven of vampires) keeping him in place. They same cannot be said for Louis. Furthermore, although Armand says Louis asked him to erase his memory. We have no way of knowing if that is true or not. It’s just his word against no one’s because he erased everyone else’s memories ( which I find suspicious). That being said. I definitely agree that Louis is a pretty bad at communicating. Which is ironic because Armand clocked that from the beginning and it drew him to Louis ie “I like how you withhold. It’s alluring.” I also think that Louis is trying to find some sense of power given his history of being powerless. Armand is ok letting Louis roleplay as someone with power (for many reasons) but does not actually relinquish any of his power. One way Louis tries to reclaim his power is by withholding his inner world from his partners and by lashing out verbally because, unlike Armand and Lestat who have material power and use it to control others, his words and his actions are the only things louis can really control in his relationships. And like you said, Louis doesn’t withhold as much from Claudia because she has no material power in their relationship; Louis is the one with structural and physical power over her so he’s not trying to balance the scale. Of course louis’ approach is not a healthy way to handle relationships and contributes to the toxicity. Thank y’all for sharing. I can’t wait for y’all to finish the season.
Excellent points! Before Armand tells Louis his tendency to withhold is alluring, he says it's "practiced". So he had quickly taken Louis' measure and zeroed in on the fact that Louis hasn't been emotionally generous for a long time, if ever. They showed the start of Louis calling Armand by his slave name in the episode when Louis "disappeared" Ghost Lestat, and Armand replaced him on the bench. "I'm a little wet," Louis said. Armand opened Louis' umbrella and held it over him. Louis' stuck a cigarette between his lips; Armand lit it. Then Armand revealed his passion, "I want you more than anything in the world." And how does Louis respond, "You sure about that, Arun?" to which Armand replies, "Yes, maître." Armand fell completely into the roleplay and Louis' answer was probably exciting for a "practiced" submissive, but it wasn't reciprocal grand passion like Armand was offering him and never would be...Because Armand is boring (like in the books), Arun is a sex toy, and Amadeo is probably a conniving gremlin who would stick in a knife and twist it when he's pissed, then wipe your memory.
The rule about only the coven master turning people is to keep the vampire numbers low. If there are too many (and especially if they don't follow the rules) they believe the vampires will risk exposure to the humans. They don't want to turn everyone, They need them for food.😅
Except nowadays, the "Great Conversion" is going on and rogues are trying to build a vampire army. The reason for all the coven rules throughout time was indeed to keep their society small, secret and controllable.
This is a set-up episode so it can seem like it would make sense to continue watching, but after watching episode 7 I think you'll realise why these episodes should be watched separately and I don't think you'll regret waiting! Same with ep 7, it would surprise me if you jumped right into ep 8 after, these are big episodes where a lot happens so worth spending some time ruminating on! Fascinating theories, some I can't discuss without discussing spoilers. Definitely a good point you made about Madeleine's turning seeming the most healthy. Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson both have episode 6 as their fave episode of season 2 which is kind of odd until you realise they are hopeless romantics the both of them, and they were charmed by Claudia and Madeleine's story. And it's kind of cute they're both supportive of their "daughter", haha. These last two episodes are crazy though and - along with episode 5 - are most people's favourites. If nothing else there will be plenty to discuss about them, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts! ❤
I don’t believe Louis told Armand to wipe his memory. I think Armand was lying again and you’ll see why when you finish this season. I think Armand is way more manipulative than y’all think. I also think Armand likes their sub/dom relationship and likes being dominated by Louis but idk maybe I’m wrong . The vibe I got was that it’s a turn on for both of them.
Regarding Dan Da Dan I agree that the sexual elements are handled fairly poorly; especially with the boy getting superpowers due to his “equipment” being taken by a ghost. Stuff like is played for laughs too much, especially when it’s men/boys being assaulted. I’m still watching but it’s a problem in a lot shonen anime for sure.

As a person who has the same name as madeline, I hate it when people say madeLINE (even though it looks like that's how it's pronounced). It's pronounced madeLYN. I know it can be confusing but jeez. No one in the story calls her madeLINE.
Yeah I mean it depends on where you come from tbh. The way that they pronounce it in the show is the original French pronunciation of the name. But not everyone in the world uses the French pronunciation. It is an absolutely gorgeous name, though. And I love how they are pronouncing it in the show.
@AnxietyRat I also feel like my name was popular in it's time and I had no problems with folks mispronouncing the name. Not until lately. Lestat and Louis will forever be the main love interests in the books and series because Anne Rice wrote them thinking about herself and her husband lol they may have other “lovers” but they always come back to each other. That's pretty much the purpose of ALL of the rules tbh.
