For Thunderslot (basically an evolved NSR) tires, they REALLY benefit from oiling and cleaning with naphtha. Oiling is not strictly necessary, but can help. It's the cleaning with naphtha (lighter fluid) that really does the magic. Easiest way is using a piece of paper towel or rag with some of the lighter fluid on it, then hold a 9v battery to the braids and "polish" the tire with it. The grip is absolutely astounding. It will probably pick up a bit of dust from your track, so have a lint roller or painters tape on hand to roll the tires on to get the dust off. After a few laps, you'll need to clean them less often. Do the cleaning with naphtha before every race, or practice session. Cheap charcoal lighter fluid works really well, too, like Kingsford or whatever. Don't feel the need to get top shelf lighter fluid. ;-) For convenience, I use the ScaleAuto Tire Cleaner that comes in a dauber bottle.
Normally I would use WD40 which I think you may have in your neck of the woods and a nice roll of tape folded over but the lint roller is quick and easier. Great info there for the viewers Greg... unfortunately I couldn't utilities any of those tricks as it would be an unfair test lap being a factory fresh car 🤣🤣🤣
@@thatslotcarguy Fair enough. WD40 does softening, but it doesn't do the magic. And, arguably, the intended prep for the tires IS the use of naphtha to clean them. So, it would still be just as out of the box, though with the recommended preparation. But, I get you... if you're wanting to do testing/comparisons like that. Problem is, not only is it not representative of the proper performance of the car, It can be hit or miss with a lot of manufacturers, especially the "toy" ones like Scalextric and Carrera. Your OOTB Scalextric might perform considerably better, or worse, than mine, but doing the basics such as lubrication and tire cleaning can often make them ore comparable. But yeah, this was mainly for those who might be watching your videos and don't already know these things. As Chris says on the chat when the subject comes up, there's no such thing as "box stock" racing. There's ALWAYS something you do to the car before you put it on the track to race it.
I think you have given me more then enough reason to do a basic 101 video now mate as some new to the hobby or racers maybe reading our comments and not fully understanding 👍

I think just the basic out of box prep as mentioned before mate as a lot of viewers may not be racing yet and put the car straight onto the track for fun, these little tips I agree would help. Body shaving (seperating chassis from body to limit roll) truing of tyres, changing Axel's and motors maybe for another day 🤣🤣
I just got my fifth Thunderslot and I love them. Truing the tires makes a huge difference. They are great to look at and a lot of fun to race, and they are very competitive with NSR, I've found. I especially like the confidence the company has by not supplying magnets with their cars.

Beautiful car. I have the "Sunoco Special" Maclaren and in love with it. Added some weight, trued the tires and got the lap record on our local. Thunderslot convert for sure.
Elvis did a couple of test laps in it in the movie "Spinout" but it wasn't his car in the movie Elvis drove a Cobra during most of the film except in the race at the end of the film where he took over another car and raced against the Elva This car was supposed to be the first production line Elva McLaren's similar M1A prototype's appearance was slightly different to the production Elva
Your slot car is how the car looks today In the movie it was a darker duller gold without the red pinstriped white stripe and had anti-glare flat black infront of the windscreen
Another excellent video, Thunderslots are some of the faster cars out of the box and only get better with adjustment. To really test and compare these cars, all of them will require a basic setup.

Travis, it's certainly a surprisingly pleasing model when we get up close and personal thanks to your detailed inspections, characterisations and 'in focus' video. I'd probably get one only there's so much other good stuff out there - a few of the Revo F40s appeal to me right now and I otherwise don't have a 'shed' (nor else a country!) as big as yours - lol. Yes, without magnets the fish tail understeer out of corners is, quite frankly, 'dreadful' and this may have a bearing on 'getting the power down' along the straightaways? My impression was that this thing is on the disappointing side when it comes to top line speed? I imagine that this could be improved with central/forward chassis weighting and some 'sticky' rears but I otherwise do question the power of the motor? Still, overall, a most pleasing model (the artisan ones mostly are these days).
I was honestly happy with the straight line speed and the overall make and finish of the car. I think once some tinkering is done then the car would be unstoppable. Thanks for watching mate and the feedback..I really appreciate it

They're all great models but this, for me, seems to be a good place to start with Thunderslot. I am interested to see how they'll run against my two Revos and NSRs?
