  • Hereford means the ford used by the army.
The Saxons arrived here in the 7th century and a settlement grew up at the ford. In 676 AD it was made the seat of a bishop and by 700AD Hereford had grown into a town.
There is much more history to Hereford than I can mention here so I will leave it with you to do your own research.
But one thing for sure we will be back later in the year for a walk around the city and make one or two videos showing you around the place.

Just had to watch! Need to see how you get out of Hereford, you were in Gaol Street Car Park, snd I thought you were going back up north? I was a bit confused you going onto the A438 then onto !49 South? but as you went over the Wye Bridge you said you were going to Hay on Wye, I was going to compare your route through Hereford going north to mine, which is mostly, from Gaol St, onto A438 follow A438 west for about 1.5 miles, then take the A4110 North, get you anywhere, anyway nice driving vid.

Evening Bryn, easy for me to get confused in Hereford, I’ve only even driven straight through but the plan was always to head for Hay on Wye, one road I have driven a few times, although not lately, then carry on the trip into Wales eventually. Will be back in Hereford though another time as we want to do some more videos around there at some stage.

You mentioned the Three Counties Hotel at 9.45 mins, sadly since this was filmed that building is to be completely demolished and turned into a Lidl Supermarket, literally 100m from a Tesco 😀 I'm at an age where I can remember that Hotel being the very edge of Hereford and after that there was nothing but fields and woods. As a kid in the 80s all that area right out to Hay on Wye was mine and my friends playground, many a time we'd cycle out to Hay on our bikes in the Summer months, it was a sad day when the bulldozers came in and flattened the whole area and built a large Housing estate on top of everything.

@@David-bw7is Sometimes progress is a bad thing especially in county towns, such a shame the hotel has been knocked down, I know houses are needed but countryside also needs protecting, sounds like you had a great childhood David 😊 Andy

@@NessandAndy On the left just past the roundabout as you leave Hereford are two big lakes, full of wildlife, there's even a healthy turtle (Terrapin) population there, you can see them sat on logs on a sunny day. Luckily somebody saw sense and stopped housing moving further into the countryside around that area and they've turned the whole of that area into quite a large Nature reserve, woods with paths, nature trails for kids, play and picnic areas, the lakes are looked after it's a wonderful place to get lost in on a Summers day. It's good to see that there are some people out there who realise that areas like that need protecting for the benefit and health of everyone and everything.

@@David-bw7is That’s fantastic David, sounds like a great place to visit one day, we seem to have a long list of those places though and finding time is the other problem, but maybe one day in the future 😊 Andy
