I'm almost finished my 2 year orthodontic treatment and I'm delighted with the results. No more underbite. I now have a healthy normal bite and no more covering my smile. Go for it, it has been the best decision I have made 😀
You should also address what caused it, say your tongue thrusting, incorrect tongue posture + function, tongue ties, etc otherwise it may relapse. It's not simply just from genetics.
@@tapsubscribe It will of course relapse if I am irresponsible about aftercare as teeth shift back to their original position, but I will be fitted with a permanent retainer at the end of treatment plus retainers I will need to wear regularly. This will keep everything in place if worn correctly.

I have it too, but in my elementary days I don't feel bad about it ( even though my nickname in school is chin ) but when i go to highschool it became to much for me, some of my friend's joke bought me disappointment to my face, when she grab a ruler and ask how long is it... Hahahhaha i really want to have an Orthodox doctor and fix my teeth and chin and meet that friend in the future. (But sadly I have to graduate and make money lol )
I have an underbite and I hate it so much! I want to fix it. I’m booked in for a consolation with an orthodontist. I hope braces and maybe teeth extractions can help me correct my bite as I don’t want jaw line surgery and I don’t feel it’s bad enough to have it. Many dentist keep telling me jaw line surgery but I don’t want to have it.

Braces will help to fix your bite but they can’t change the bones of your face. If you’re wanting facial change it is possible with orthognathic jaw surgery. We treat some patients who have severe underbites with jaw surgery so it is an option

@@asilentvoice1380 braces can change the alignment of the teeth. Usually overgrown lower jaw or undergrown upper jaw and sometimes a combination of both can be fixed with braces. But if it's the lower jaw that's too overgrown and protruding out then you'll need to undergo jaw surgery

My orthodontist told me I had an extended lower jaw. My top and bottom teeth touch each other and he said my top teeth are supposed overlap the bottom like a pair of scissors. Never knew that until recently
@@zigsaw7161 I did teeth extractions with braces. I have a mild underbite so jaw surgery wasn’t necessary. Edit: jaw surgery was an option but he also said it was more expensive.

in my situation i had already finished my orthodontic treatment but my top teeth was basic laying incredibly slanted over my bottom teeth instead of being straight behind it. i’m now getting it fixed with elastics so alls good but it was a little weird that they never caught onto it the first time around

My orthodontist told me we didn't need to extract two of my upper molars to straighten them out. He said he wanted to extract them so I don't have a wide smile... I already extracted them and now I'm noticing how much it ruined my upper smile. I even think it would've been 10x smarter not to extract them since I will have orthognatic surgery to correct my underbite. My lower teeth are wider than my upper teeth..
I am 26 years old with a class 3 underbite, preparing for braces next Tuesday (7th September) and ive been waiting my whole life for jaw surgery. Update: Today is the 20th November and my teeth look completely different from before and my bite has improved, my speech has improved. I went through a lot of pain in the beginning but that's just because my teeth are being pushed in position and its all been worth it. Update: 26th Feb 2022 I'm on my final wire and will be doing another mould to find out what the next stages will be hopefully its surgery and if so wish me luck!!! Update: 15th September 2023 I am finally on the waiting list for surgery but I have been told it will take several months as there is a lot people waiting UPDATE: 15th feb 2024 My appointment for surgery is on the 8th of may and has been confirmed. next final update will be post OP! Update: may 7th I'm feeling very anxious but I know it has to be done. Wish me luck tomorrow Update: 9th may MY surgery was a success, thank God. I woke up feeling like I was hit by a truck at the same time I was numb from the cheeks down. I couldn't speak or open my mouth much. Week 2 post op: swelling went down very quickly and I can eat mash and beans and ice cream but that's about it. The pain aches but ibuprofen helps. I can speak but not coherently. I will update again on week 4. Final update!
I'm about 3 years in to my braces journey and only just got brackets on all my bottom teeth. I'm having surgery too but still not sure when this is! Just want it all to be over with now 🙃
I hate having a underbite it makes my bottom lip seem like it’s always poking out when your looking at my face from the side . I really hate it I’m very aware of it but it’s nothing I can do about it and it gets very annoying especially in public when being watched

I have mild underbite, I'm wearing braces for 16 months now, currently with bands/elastics,I'm seeing a very slow progress but comparing my teeth from few years back,I did not regret the pain and the patience I have been exerting.
Not sure if you are still responding to comments, but I hope so! I have a class 3 bite now with spacing on top row, bottom row is fine (no crowding or spacing). Im 31 now. 5 years ago I got consults for braces and none of them mention jaw surgery nor removing teeth on the bottom. This year, I have had 4 consults and they all saying i will develop an underbite with the braces and will need to either do jaw surgery or remove 2 teeth on the bottom. I don’t understand why i cant just get braces with elastics. I don’t want surgery nor do I want to remove teeth.
I just got 2 bottom teeth removed for underbite and I promise you it is such an easy procedure. I was totally awake w/ novacaine it took 10 minutes tops and they were sore the rest of the day but I could still eat soft foods and the pain was not bad at all. I went back to eating most food barring crunchy stuff the next day and by now 5 days later gums are completely closed up. I totally recommend. They even put numbing cream so u don’t feel the novacaine shots.
My condition is a tad bit less worse. My lower teeth and my upper teeth are now touching when i really try. It think it's because of the exercise i was doing. I watched a video of his dream and it helped me. In just 2 days of doing the told exercise my teeth and jaw made a huge difference. It can also fix your posture. My underbite isn't that severe, but when i eat or chew, i bite on my gum, i can't eat well:( but i don't have any teeth coming out from my gums. But i hope the his dream video helps you all! Just be regular with the exercise! It may not be that effective for those with severe underbites.
I have a moderate underbite. I already have one tooth extraction and two more in the next appointment. Although they put braces first before the extraction
My teeth are stacked, so sometimes laying on my stomach or resting my jaw in general my jaws hurt so much and my last dentist visit I was told that I will be needing braces soon or my teeth will start shifting and of course they did. My front teeth aren’t as straight, but I do have braces now. I’ve had them for about a good month so I’m on the road to correcting my smile which I’m thankful for!!
@@sarang143natsumi i started my process in August of 2020 and since last month I’ve been told to only wear my elastics. But yes it has changed a lot and is becoming mild than before. You just have to keep wearing the headgear and elastics as told for x amount of hours. Make sure you don’t skip days.

In my case its different... usually my button and upper teeth touches each other but while eating or chewing i have to bring lower teeth out side from upper teeth.. did i need braces or anything?

Surgery is unnecessary in most cases!!! Most Drs recommended the surgery but i didn't do it.. I had class3 underbite and it has been 1 year I'm under treatment now my bite much better than before. When close my mouth upper teeth comes exactly over the lower teeth. It looks good and there is a change in my speech as well.. Im sure In two three more months my bite will be perfect. I'm 37 yrs old.. If anyone wants I can share the pics for motivation.. good luck to everyone..
It kind of depends. In some cases you will get them from day 1 - other times you may need to wait a couple of months to get your teeth aligned a bit before starting rubber bands. In either case - once you're doctor asks you to wear your bands, wear them like a champion and you will be amazed at how quickly your bite get corrected!
This is a smart idea - otherwise you'd have to get braces twice since you might outgrow the bite correction if you're not finished growing yet. Your doctor has the right idea
@@evee739 This would be a good question to ask your doctor. There are often treatment options for treating underbites without surgery. There may be some compromises and your results may not be 100% perfect without surgery, but often times, you can still get a big improvement and get a better smile without surgery if you are wanting to avoid it. @@PremierOrthodontics My son is 16 years old and was told by one ortho to wait until he stops growing before fixing a mild occlusion that started during puberty. He is a late bloomer so that is difficult to predict. We all want him to start now but heard growth can happen up to 20+? Its mentally difficult to watch and wait and wait and wait. Is it best ok to start now? Another ortho states most likely his jaw is set so we can start now. Im confused. Any advice?

Hi Dr. all orthodontists realize the importance of cephalometric x_ray in diagnosis and treatment plan. but in case of lack of these rays in the area where you live and in your clinic.. how can an orthodontist recognize whether the condition is skeletal or dental.. are there any diagnostic features you can notice, clinically? thank you so much.
The acromegaly would need to be treated first to ensure that the lower jaw growth is stable. Once the growth is stabilized either braces or braces plus jaw surgery can treat the underbite.

Most of the time it will take about two years for braces with underbite correction. It may take more or less than 24 months depending on the severity of your case. Your orthodontist should be able to give you a more accurate estimate

*I'm not a health/medical professional of any sort.* But I learned an underbite comes from keeping a low tongue posture, tongue thrusting, mouth hanging open, back teeth not in light contact/or near touching, as well as tongue ties. Genetics is only one factor, and, to my understanding, not very much according to what Doctor John Mew said. It's what you do every day and how you do it - your tongue and body posture and function. Also, a proper push-swallow is very important too so you don't continue to narrow your palate and face. I learned all this from what is called "mewing" and "Orthotropics". You can google before and afters of people who do mewing. You will see the difference in people's jaws/faces (not just their teeth) when they practice correct tongue + body posture and function (mewing is really just this and it's free). This is especially significant for those who are still growing to avoid having braces or potentially surgery in the future. I hope this helps, this is just a little bit of info, so please research "mewing/Orthotropics" more to do it properly/safely.
Do I have an underbite? When my lower jaw is relaxed, bottom teeth stick out in front of upper teeth. When I speak I notice lower teeth teeth protruding out in front of my upper teeth. I can physically pull back lower jaw behind upper teeth to form a proper bite but it’s not comfortable and when I chew it’s wearing the back of my front teeth out. It effects my speech enunciation because there’s tension when I force my lower teeth behind my upper teeth. Do I have an underbite? I hope after treatment it will look good. As my dentist told My Underbite won't be fixed completely as I will need jaw surgery but I don't look that bad so I didn't opt for surgery. I just wanted to have slightly better bite. Looks was secondary

Hi David, most kids can begin early orthodontist tic treatment around 6 or 7 if the doctor feels it will be helpful to start early. At 18 months there’s not much to be done. Your child still has a lot of developing to do and there’s still lots of growth that will happen. For now, you don’t need to worry too much. Wait until your child is closer to 6 or 7 and see about getting a consultation with an orthodontist. 👍
I started my treatment today, I started with my upper teeth, i haven't finished putting all the things for the braces its will tale about 3 days 30 to 50 min per day, and I'll stay a while with only top braces and after get my jaw done too, as for elastics i don't know since i forgot to ask, please do tell me if this is normal or not as I'm a little bit confused about the procedure

Before I wear braces my upper teeth can still touch on my lower teeth but when I started to wear braces I see that my upper teeth moves more backward, is this normal?
This can happen if your lower teeth were crowded to begin with. As they get straighter and the crowding resolves they will usually move forward. This is normal and to be expected. The good news is that correcting the bite is usually part of the plan and your teeth will be perfect by the time you’re done 👍
My 12 years old had an underbite and was wearing the face gear 6.5 months ago. Today the orthodontist said he can stop wearing the face gear. I’m worried that it has turn into an overbite now. Did the orthodontist advice too late to stop? Please let me know if his lower jaw will still growing and it be reduce the overbite? The orthodontist also said he needed to extract 2 top and 2 bottom. I am 26 years old with a class 3 underbite, preparing for braces next Tuesday (7th September) and ive been waiting my whole life for jaw surgery.
Update: Today is the 20th November and my teeth look completely different from before and my bite has improved, my speech has improved. I went through a lot of pain in the beginning but that's just because my teeth are being pushed in position and its all been worth it.

I'm on my final wire and will be doing another mould to find out what the next stages will be hopefully its surgery and if so wish me luck!!!

I am finally on the waiting list for surgery but I have been told it will take several months as there is a lot people waiting

MY surgery was a success, thank God. I woke up feeling like I was hit by a truck at the same time I was numb from the cheeks down. I couldn't speak or open my mouth much.
Week 2 post op: swelling went down very quickly and I can eat mash and beans and ice cream but that's about it. The pain aches but ibuprofen helps. I can speak but not coherently. I will update again on week 4. Final update!

Hi guys, I had class lll underbite, I started off wearing a Carriere Motion Appliance with elastics. After 5 months I transitioned to metal braces with elastics. I'm almost finished my 2 year orthodontic treatment and I'm delighted with the results. No more underbite. I now have a healthy normal bite and no more covering my smile. Go for it, it has been the best decision I have made 😀
I have mild underbite, I'm wearing braces for 16 months now, currently with bands/elastics,I'm seeing a very slow progress but comparing my teeth from few years back,I did not regret the pain and the patience I have been exerting.

Not sure if you are still responding to comments, but I hope so! I have a class 3 bite now with spacing on top row, bottom row is fine (no crowding or spacing). Im 31 now. 5 years ago I got consults for braces and none of them mention jaw surgery nor removing teeth on the bottom. This year, I have had 4 consults and they all saying i will develop an underbite with the braces and will need to either do jaw surgery or remove 2 teeth on the bottom. I don’t understand why i cant just get braces with elastics. I don’t want surgery nor do I want to remove teeth.
I just got 2 bottom teeth removed for underbite and I promise you it is such an easy procedure. I was totally awake w/ novacaine it took 10 minutes tops and they were sore the rest of the day but I could still eat soft foods and the pain was not bad at all. I went back to eating most food barring crunchy stuff the next day and by now 5 days later gums are completely closed up. I totally recommend. They even put numbing cream so u don’t feel the novacaine shots.
My condition is a tad bit less worse. My lower teeth and my upper teeth are now touching when i really try. It think it's because of the exercise i was doing. I watched a video of his dream and it helped me. In just 2 days of doing the told exercise my teeth and jaw made a huge difference. It can also fix your posture. My underbite isn't that severe, but when i eat or chew, i bite on my gum, i can't eat well:( but i don't have any teeth coming out from my gums. But i hope the his dream video helps you all! Just be regular with the exercise! It may not be that effective for those with severe underbites.

I have a moderate underbite. I already have one tooth extraction and two more in the next appointment. Although they put braces first before the extraction
My teeth are stacked, so sometimes laying on my stomach or resting my jaw in general my jaws hurt so much and my last dentist visit I was told that I will be needing braces soon or my teeth will start shifting and of course they did. My front teeth aren’t as straight, but I do have braces now. I’ve had them for about a good month so I’m on the road to correcting my smile which I’m thankful for!!

Headgear works for underbites too! We didn't cover EVERY appliance that is used for underbites, but headgear is another tool that can work well.

@@sarang143natsumi i started my process in August of 2020 and since last month I’ve been told to only wear my elastics. But yes it has changed a lot and is becoming mild than before. You just have to keep wearing the headgear and elastics as told for x amount of hours. Make sure you don’t skip days.

@@PremierOrthodontics could you let me know which one works best? My son who is 11.5 years old also has underbite. One ortho said he will try elastic for 6 months but if not working, he will try headgear. Another ortho said to start headgear right away. Which one should I go with?
In my case its different... usually my button and upper teeth touches each other but while eating or chewing i have to bring lower teeth out side from upper teeth.. did i need braces or anything?

Surgery is unnecessary in most cases!!! Most Drs recommended the surgery but i didn't do it.. I had class3 underbite and it has been 1 year I'm under treatment now my bite much better than before. When close my mouth upper teeth comes exactly over the lower teeth. It looks good and there is a change in my speech as well.. Im sure In two three more months my bite will be perfect. I'm 37 yrs old.. If anyone wants I can share the pics for motivation.. good luck to everyone..

It kind of depends. In some cases you will get them from day 1 - other times you may need to wait a couple of months to get your teeth aligned a bit before starting rubber bands.
In either case - once you're doctor asks you to wear your bands, wear them like a champion and you will be amazed at how quickly your bite get corrected!

This is a smart idea - otherwise you'd have to get braces twice since you might outgrow the bite correction if you're not finished growing yet. Your doctor has the right idea

@@evee739 This would be a good question to ask your doctor. There are often treatment options for treating underbites without surgery. There may be some compromises and your results may not be 100% perfect without surgery, but often times, you can still get a big improvement and get a better smile without surgery if you are wanting to avoid it.
Definitely speak to your doctor and see if there are any alternative options for your specific case.

@@PremierOrthodontics My son is 16 years old and was told by one ortho to wait until he stops growing before fixing a mild occlusion that started during puberty. He is a late bloomer so that is difficult to predict. We all want him to start now but heard growth can happen up to 20+? Its mentally difficult to watch and wait and wait and wait. Is it best ok to start now? Another ortho states most likely his jaw is set so we can start now. Im confused. Any advice?

Can braces fix underbites that's caused by acromegaly?
The acromegaly would need to be treated first to ensure that the lower jaw growth is stable.
Once the growth is stabilized either braces or braces plus jaw surgery can treat the underbite.

Posterior open bites can be very difficult to correct. Elastics can sometimes help, but it depends on the cause of the open bite.

It may take more or less than 24 months depending on the severity of your case.
Your orthodontist should be able to give you a more accurate estimate

My orthodontist said my jaw isn’t fully formed and I have to wait till it is they said I might have to do an operation to take out teeth but I have more gaps in my teeth and only have abit of mild overcrowding, also my bottom set of teeth are fine there are no crowding or gaps btw I have mild overbite

But I learned an underbite comes from keeping a low tongue posture, tongue thrusting, mouth hanging open, back teeth not in light contact/or near touching, as well as tongue ties. Genetics is only one factor, and, to my understanding, not very much according to what Doctor John Mew said. It's what you do every day and how you do it - your tongue and body posture and function. Also, a proper push-swallow is very important too so you don't continue to narrow your palate and face. I learned all this from what is called "mewing" and "Orthotropics". You can google before and afters of people who do mewing. You will see the difference in people's jaws/faces (not just their teeth) when they practice correct tongue + body posture and function (mewing is really just this and it's free). This is especially significant for those who are still growing to avoid having braces or potentially surgery in the future. I hope this helps, this is just a little bit of info, so please research "mewing/Orthotropics" more to do it properly/safely.
Do I have an underbite? When my lower jaw is relaxed, bottom teeth stick out in front of upper teeth. When I speak I notice lower teeth teeth protruding out in front of my upper teeth. I can physically pull back lower jaw behind upper teeth to form a proper bite but it’s not comfortable and when I chew it’s wearing the back of my front teeth out. It effects my speech enunciation because there’s tension when I force my lower teeth behind my upper teeth. Do I have an underbite? The fact that “I can” attain a proper bite with effort eliminate possibility of underbite and it’s something else? Thank you!

I have a 5mm underbite the mandibular front teeth inclinated backward and became 4mm higher than the rest while the maxilary teeths are near normal when i close my mouth the mandibular teeths completely cover the maxilary i want to fix the problem without surgery . We recommend wearing retainers for life while you sleep. Its the only way to guarantee your teeth stay straight

@@zigsaw7161 I am under treatment of underbite. It's been six months and recently started wearing rubber bands. Jaw from outside looks slightly better than before. It looks more aligned than before. I hope after treatment it will look good. As my dentist told My Underbite won't be fixed completely as I will need jaw surgery but I don't look that bad so I didn't opt for surgery. I just wanted to have slightly better bite. Looks was secondary

For my under bite I had braces but the process of it made a huge gap between my two front teeth but it ended up fine

Hi David, most kids can begin early orthodontist tic treatment around 6 or 7 if the doctor feels it will be helpful to start early.
At 18 months there’s not much to be done. Your child still has a lot of developing to do and there’s still lots of growth that will happen.
For now, you don’t need to worry too much. Wait until your child is closer to 6 or 7 and see about getting a consultation with an orthodontist. 👍

I have braces with an edge to edge/slight underbite bite right now. My western dental ortho put elastics on in the class 3 underbite configuration, however its been 4 weeks and I see ZERO change after wearing my elastics religiously every day. when should I expect to see any change?

Before I wear braces my upper teeth can still touch on my lower teeth but when I started to wear braces I see that my upper teeth moves more backward, is this normal?
This can happen if your lower teeth were crowded to begin with. As they get straighter and the crowding resolves they will usually move forward. This is normal and to be expected.
The good news is that correcting the bite is usually part of the plan and your teeth will be perfect by the time you’re done 👍

My 12 years old had an underbite and was wearing the face gear 6.5 months ago. Today the orthodontist said he can stop wearing the face gear. I’m worried that it has turn into an overbite now. Did the orthodontist advice too late to stop? Please let me know if his lower jaw will still growing and it be reduce the overbite? The orthodontist also said he needed to extract 2 top and 2 bottom. But he has only 12 teeth on the top and 13 on the bottom so it’s not like it’s overcrowding. Does he have to get tooth extraction?
