I believe the tightlock coupling was used because it could couple to a buckeye in an emergency. Unfortunately it was apparently sometimes difficult to get them apart again!!!
For someone who volunteers at the railway, I kid you not lifting the buckeye is not easy and I can't even bloody lift it! It's all about the technique and you got to practice the manoeuvre or if in doubt, use the bar.

There are additional style of couplers in the uk only time many are variants of the tight lock style
