OMG.... i had no idea it was the famous Thomas Dolby from one of my favorite songs/videos of the 80's...... I came for the ships.... and left with a book, the music, and the wind at my back! Good to see him! Cheers everyone
I was lucky enough to get to your show the other night in Manchester which was absolutely awesome. You stayed behind to autograph many people’s copies of this book (including mine) so you must have been so tired so thank you. I’m looking forward to reading this! Recently did my level 1 certificate in dinghy sailing (hardly the New York Yacht Club but it’s a start eh?) 😂 👌
Fascinating history. I lived on my 30 foot sailboat in New York City for a few years back in the 1990's. There is still some of that money around buying big yachts. Saw some of the trans Atlantic race boats around the docks. Had Rupert Murdoch's 180 foot yacht block my sunset view for a few days when he docked his boat in front of mine when he got married on it a few wives ago. I also got to visit the New York Yacht Club once. Amazing library full of all things nautical. Book sounds very interesting.
Fascinating indeed! Well done, but we've only come to expect such total satisfaction from your work. I wish this was a series of hour long shows as you have a gift for presentations like this. Thank you Mr. Dolby, and cheers from the Colorado Rockies!
Just read your book!! It was better than expected and so well researched. Truly exceptional writing and genuine insight 🤗 thanks! loved Davey and Jacob’s reconciliation at the end
I pre-ordered your book on Amazon for Kindle. And I'm going to be at the Totally Tubular festival at the Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City in July. I met you years ago when you did a show at Dante Hall in Atlantic City. You were so nice and I was hoping to get a picture with you but that couple messed everything up by getting in your space. You answered a question for me & signed the poster. It was about the song Budapest by Blimp. If the guitar part in the song was influenced by Prince and you said that you were listening to a lot of Prince back then. That was a great night.
My Father, Jim Gargan was a young boy who was a crew member on Cornelius Vanderbilt’s various yachts. I have tons of paper race results and documents relating to the races and outcomes. I have sailed all my life and reflect on these sailing days of the past. For that reason I will seek and buy a copy to read. Bill Gargan
Glad you made this video. To be honest I wasn’t quite sure what this book would entail completely and almost was going to wait until later to purchase it. This has given me enough of a taste that I’m intrigued and want to get it immediately. Thanks Mr. Dolby.👍
Looking forward to reading your book. The modern foiling race boat crews are flying so fast across the water that they wear crash helmets. Safety gear includes a small scuba tank incase they're trapped underneath a capsized boat. Still driven to be the fastest boat at any cost.
Thanks Thomas for making this video. It only deepens my interest in buying your book. Actually I almost bought the hardcover but waiting for the paperback and will absolutely buy. Can’t wait to read it!
I'll make sure to pick up a copy. I am currently learning to sail for the reasons you said. It's about learning something completely new. It's a challenge that is more difficult to do as we get older. It's been exciting, sometimes scary but a lot of fun.
This part of history fascinates me as well. I race in old sailboat classes with their roots in this era such as the 6 metre racing yacht with the design rule developed in 1907. Looking forward to reading your book.
good on you, love your music and imagination, one creative to another i totally empathise with pushing boundaries of my art and photography, so to hear you musical stories is soothing and thought provoking whenever i listen to it. i'll have to try your novel, i rarely read for fun unfortunately. but maybe i will your novel :) stay well, we need another album from out favourite musician.
As someone who lives in a Maine lobster fishing community, I found it so interesting that they would use lobstermen as crew. They are still some of the hardest working people I know.
You really need to present at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI. Harold Vanderbilt’s “Trivia” is there along with a ton of information on this era!
I'm the lad who helped you pick up the marquee. 😂 we looked at each other. Dumbfounded. 😮 Anyway I have my book. Thank you Sir. 🎉 Awesome show. Kudos!!
You Sir, are a marketing genius. An infomercial that I didn’t realise was an advertisement until the last 20 seconds. Brilliant! Best of luck with your novel. Now can you sell the screenplay?
Well, *actual* marketing geniuses have scolded me and told me this was a big mistake--you're supposed to whack them over the head with it in the first 10 seconds. But that's not my style :)
So interesting, in Australia of course we know about the New York Yacht club because we took their cup away. This explains how they came to be so arrogant to believe they could never lose it. 📖
You Aussies and a small cabal of Dutch yacht designers, you mean. Well good on ya mate, but it was never thought by the NYYC that the Cup could not be lost, just that the event would suffer it we did lose. And lo and behold the America's Cup today has lost all significance, all grandeur, all import. It gets passed around these days from one vulgar speedboat to another. Most true sailors will have nothing to do with it.
@@dap777754 It’s an interesting perspective. No doubt those old curmudgeons knew deep down they would lose it one day. Credit to the Dutch designers, but it was Aussies that went out and sailed the thing. The innovation in the sport now is mind blowing, and the racing is way more exciting to watch than it was in 1983. I’m not sure the cup would even be relevant any more without that investment and energy.
@thomasdolby, Maybe you could help me. I'm looking for an obscure musical track used in the game "Harpoon II". I believe you or a company you have may have created this, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear the whole track - it has been very frustrating only having a part of this, as the intro to the game cuts it off (unintentional sadism!). Good to see you are keeping things Nautical!
Thank you. I have gone back to those two CDs on many occasions when I need some background music! Invariably, TH-cam tells me I've violated someone's copyright, and I have to fight it!
Cant wait to give this novel a read. Im expecting a cross between cyberpunk ala Gibson and postmodern ala Pynchon. This is the esteemed company in which i hold TMDR.
Nothing's changed. Here in Chile in 2019 the police was shooting people at protests just to protect "critical infrastructures", owned by you know who. I remember your songs back in 1983 or so, I'm glad to know this side of you 🤗
I’ll buy your book. But correction: many states STILL have no income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
Look at how many super yachts are out there now, and the wealth controlled by these owners. Nothing has changed. Where will they all escape too, when the whole system comes crashing down? Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot says it all perfectly!
See you in Louisville. I'm going to order this. By the way, I thought you might enjoy knowing that I'm a defense attorney and teach a presentation called "She Blinded Me With Junk Science." Is about chaining junk science forensics in criminal prosecutions. It has your video at the front while people walk in and the powerpoint presentation is done in the style of a silent movie. Thought you may find it funny that this gen x gal is introducing you to gen z. Lol
We live in similar times. The wealth gap in America is widest in over 100 years - a huge reversal from just 50 years ago, when America enjoyed the highest upward mobility in the developed world, mainly thanks to unions. Now, after repeated Republican attacks on the working and middle class (and repeated tax cuts for the rich and corporations) America now has the lowest upward mobility in the developed world, and dramatically lower union participation. Votes have consequences.
NICE, SIR!!! 🙂 - BTW?! - Guess what me and my hound dog are watching 2 NITE?!? - LOL !!!! Jo Kennedy !!! - 40 YEARS! - STARSTRUCK!!!! - HAHAHA !!!! You are THE BEST, SIR!!! 🙂 Thomas Dolby !! - "MONKEY IN ME"!!! th-cam.com/video/TjeCbzLQ4-c/w-d-xo.html
"It says they were philanthropists but I just like to pretend that they were bad people." I shouldn't be surprised, but I am still disappointed. Papadam.
The 'tycoons and industrials' built nothing, it was already there from the previous civlization, all those mansions, cathedrals. They only had to dug them out of the mud that had covered the whole world and of which events evidence is present in all cities in the world on the old buildings, with the roads paved against the windows of the lower level, because digging ALL out was way too much work, and all having a 'basement', the previous base floor. Search 'empty cities' in the Bible. Desolate and without inhabitants. Research 'mud flood'.
It is ambition, not altruism, what drives mankind. Who said, Bill Gates helped humanity more than Mother Theresa, and we all agree who is good and who is evil.

Always interesting in a calming way. Thanks Thomas. Would be great find out someday that you're coming to perform in Ireland. I'll have the kettle on.
You made this sound so good. I will check it out!
Thank you for the History lesson. Can't wait for the book, your a fantastic story teller.

Very interesting.. Thank you for informing us on this subject.. Very nice..
Looking forward to reading your book.

To most, that's not really sailing nor is it true America's Cup. An era that pretty much ended in 1983 or so.
Look forward to it ❤️🫖🙏☘️🌼
Coming on the heels of the Edwardian era....love this time period and anything maritime related. Looking forward to what lies ahead for the brothers.
Fantastic. I love that period of history. The Biltmore in NC is an amazing example. Thanks Mr. Dolby. Love your music too. I’ll check it out.

Hello Thomas. I have loved your songs and will surely read your novel.
So happy I stumbled upon your channel, Thomas. I've been a fan forever and this made my day.
We will buy itvfor certain and so checken it out , exciting! Thank you for writing and letting us know , wish you well Sylvia
just wish you could make it up to BC Vancouver long time Fan.... all the best
That would be great. I had to settle for Seattle to see him
Congrats on the creative adventure!
I will absolutely buy this book! Thank you for the introduction to it.

Looking forward to getting a copy of your book 👍
As someone who lives in a Maine lobster fishing community, I found it so interesting that they would use lobstermen as crew. They are still some of the hardest working people I know.
I'll be reading this for sure.
You are a great teacher
Love this Thomas. Thank you!.
I grew up with your music, will definitely buy your book. Thanks
You really need to present at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI. Harold Vanderbilt’s “Trivia” is there along with a ton of information on this era!
Congratulations on your hair!!!👍👍💯
@TE-LE-GRAM-ThomasDolby I'm just happy you had it done!!! It's all good, Thomas!!!!
THIS sounds fascinating!
Always interesting to find out another musician is also a sailor. Seems like there are quite a few.
Awesome.. cant wait to read it.

This is great!
Wind Power! Always loved that track.
How cool is this!?
Thank you.
Thomas! Would you ever shed some light and demos on working with Def Leppard and some other big bands?
Would love to listen to your voice as you narrate this for Audible.
The J-Class yachts are some of the most beautiful machines man has ever designed
True that! But these were even before the J Class, and even bigger.
So interesting, in Australia of course we know about the New York Yacht club because we took their cup away. This explains how they came to be so arrogant to believe they could never lose it. 📖

@TE-LE-GRAM-ThomasDolby 🤣
I didn't think three of my primary interests would suddenly synthesize into this video.
@thomasdolby, Maybe you could help me. I'm looking for an obscure musical track used in the game "Harpoon II". Wealthy people wanting to control society for their own benefit, to the detriment of everyone else, whilst evading tax. Nothing ever changes.
Except for now those “people” have convinced a nation of idiots that “they” are on their side.
Same as it ever was…
Maybe it’s time we push back.
"...The division of extreme wealth and poverty", that is an outstanding thought.
Thomas Dolby had a Red Ryder carbine action bb gun right?
Great music from "Gothic" and G2TME I have both CDs! Always good to have a library of your own music to go under your narrations 🤣
Thank you. I have gone back to those two CDs on many occasions when I need some background music! Invariably, TH-cam tells me I've violated someone's copyright, and I have to fight it!

Hmm, I get your drift, but my book is not really a dystopian version of the era--it's the actual era :) So no steam-powered Krakens', etc

This may sound irrelevant, but can you reissue your albums you made in the 80s and 90s? And possibly do it with acoustic sounds with chaddy cakes?
Look at how many super yachts are out there now, and the wealth controlled by these owners.
Nothing has changed.
Where will they all escape too, when the whole system comes crashing down?
Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot says it all perfectly!
Will there be an audio book of your novell? I'm visualy impared but i'd like to read it
That's my hope too!
Read by the author, of course!
Thank you for this. Question what was the name of and how does one get a copy of the book that your grandmother had?
Beken of Cowes.
