The BBC scientist Magnus Pyke. Well Magnus had been on the radio but at the time Thomas' refers to he was most famous for being on "Don't Ask Me" which was made by Yorkshire Television an ITV company.
Thomas Dolby is not only talented, but extremely friendly and down to earth, back in 1987 he came to my audio engineering school, The College for Recording Arts in San Francisco, Ca. and gave a lecture on electronic music. I remember asking him questions and chatting with him, he was so non-pretentious I was amazed!

What a brilliant f*cking guy. He played the keyboard for Bowie in 1985 at the Live Aid concert. Queen played just before them. And to think Dolby found his first synth in the garbage just, what, 7 years prior? Just plain brilliant.
I watched it. That concert was one of the biggest music events of my time. I am 50 for 1 more month, I was a teen when this happened. I gotta go watch Bowie now and check out Dolby. Thx.
What's amazing how these early synth pioneers could make such lovely sounds back in the 80 with their relatively primitive machines. Nowadays all those can be done on a computer including voice shaping (ADSR), composition, editing, sequencing, and production.

Holy shit watching a 80s pop star navigate that modern setup really is a testament to Dolby's love of electronic music. I wouldn't mind going to a live show.
The man knows his way around gear. He played a venue In NYC where I was a house sound engineer. An enormously talented and very smart guy who wears it lightly. Played a lot of The Golden Age of Wireless. Solo, very much like this. Really great.
OMG, are you serious man? That 'modern setup' is a cakewalk for someone like Dolby! Everything got a hell of a lot easier back then when we could afford things like Mac's and MOTU Performer software, but before that, it was all tape recorders and CV gate stuff. It was all a real PITA. By comparison, it is VERY easy to make and play music nowadays.
I'm glad he doesnt' shy away from a song that became his hit of the ages. Too many bands think they are better than the music they create and shun their pop hits instead of letting them define them.
Sweet child o mine, Smells like spirit and Zombie immediately come to mind, their creators critisized the popularity those songs garnered for them and my thought is always "then why make the mf in the first place?"
“Aliens ate my Buick” is a great album! I invited Thomas in the early 1990’s to come to Lisbon for a small conf about internet music and he very kindly came over and was very friendly and down to earth. A very generous human being ❤
And in particular he was responsible for the THE most famous ring tone of all time - the Nokia ring tone. Nokia was a client of his ring tone company, Beatnik. The guy is a legend.
This guy is 100% talent , from the tips of his toes...right thru his huge brain. His sounds are still heard today, his voice is still great...what an amazing man!
Yes, he's a genius...and also VERY knowledgeable about sound and musical production - evidenced by his flawless work together with Prefab Sprout, where he had lots of ideas and a great deal of prior experience but took care not to let them smother the equally great talents of Paddy McAloon and the band. Btw I used to think Magnus Pyke had been a friend of his father (who was a famous professor of Classics at London, Oxford and Cambridge, while Pyke. a chemist by trade, was well-known as a champion of science and higher education) so that he had known the man through his family, but maybe not...Anyway, Pyke performed his role in the song and especially the video with gusto! 😃
Always admired this guy’s talent but never knew what an engaging personality and sense of humor he has! And SBMWS remains in a class by itself almost 40 years after its release. Anyone who was of age in 1983 will know exactly what you’re referring to if you just randomly yell “Science!” - as I, admittedly, still do waaaaay too often.

I remember we used to think THIS WAS THE music of The Future with synthesizers and unusual sounds. Still sounds great. Im a Class of 84 grad. An MTV Hit .
The whole album is one of my favorites, "that's why" has some cracking lyrics and just a great groove. "Eastern Bloc" is great update to "Pirate Twins" post the fall of the wall and then he went on to perform in Roger Water's live version of "The Wall" shot at The wall featuring as the school teacher that was slightly reminiscent of Magnus Pike
1987 or 88 he played a gig at a place called Parkers here in Seattle. A band I roadied for opened up for him so my job was to do anything the band needed to have a good show - including going TD’s dressing room and thanking him for the huge opportunity. I knocked and popped my head in and he was warming up on some keyboards playing this while a smoking hot ‘assistant’ gave him a shoulder rub. He smiled and said ‘you’re very welcome, just let me know your names so i can thank you all.’ When we finished our set and cleared off, he came up and thanked us all and got the crowed to applaud. Very cool guy. Musical genius.
The usual irony: a composer's most tossed-off bit of fluff is the one thing he's most known for. And yet, he still makes it fun -- for us, and maybe himself, despite his anxiety about performing. Nice to see him recognized by Roland, and we even get a a tantalizing snippet of an early unreleased piece.

Apparently when my friend was a small child he used to have real trouble with anxiety, and that in turn effected his sleep. His parents tried everything to get the poor little dude to rest, but they had such a hard time with it. Eventually they figured out that he could peacefully fall and stay asleep if they played “she blinded me with science” on repeat for him which he also eventually began to refer to as “the hammer song”.
I always get choked up when I hear ' When she's standing close to me ( bliiindiing me with scieeence!)". I still have no clue why, but I'm not complaining. It's just beautiful.
Thomas Dolby produced _Steve McQueen_ which is one of the best pop albums not only of the 80s, but also of the 20th century, and also of all time. Seriously underrated musician and producer.
Hard to believe this song is now 40 years old. It was so far ahead of it's time whe it came out. Nothin was like it. Dolby is such a creative force. Its fun to watch him break down the specific elemdnts of this song. So much going on in it.
I am totally blown away... So happy to see this, thank you... Heard this song and Hyperactive on the radio as a kid, then a friend gave me a tape of Aliens ate my Buick, bought the CD when I was older then tracked down a Vinyl sealed copy 10 years ago... To this day one of my favorite artists, I'm a musician myself and as a bass player Thomas Dolby always paid close attention to the bass... Kudos to a fantastic composer, performer and singer. Can't get over how good his voice is. Does he ever perform live ? What a legend !
I don't know about recently but I did see him perform in New York in the 1980s at The Ritz. The DJ used to play Europa on their sound system. Mind bending!

I totally agree! I've mentioned to a number of people in the past that the 80s was the s***. Most of the bands and musicians were on their A-game that Day & age, if not, you more than likely weren't in the game. I'm so thankful I grew up in the 80s!
Thomas Dolby was a huge musical crush as a high school sophomore Valley Girl. Was terribly excited to see him in concert @ The Greek Theater or Universal Amphitheater in LA. I believe it was. I think I still have a concert tee. Intelligent, vastly creative and unafraid to make music that no one else was creating. Great to see him here and now. ♡
I remember when I first heard this song, back in 1982. It was one of those songs that made you know instantly that you had to find everything the artist had ever done and listen to that too. Fortunately, I worked in a record shop at the time!
I got to see him open for BT at a small venue in Norfolk, VA. The NorVA. Would’ve been 2006 or 2007. He came out in this steampunk duster that practically touched the floor, and wordlessly started hit set, building a song one loop at a time as brilliantly as only he can. I’ve never forgotten that. I’d never seen or heard anything like it before.
I find it so exciting (as with many musicians) that he is the only one in the world who could have come up with this. Absolutely love the song it's so unique
I could watch this a gazillion times. It brings me back to my early 20s when I had been plucked from an almost certain death on skidrow to a way of life unknown to me.
Dolby is a legend. The production on Aliens Ate My Buick is just something else. I really enjoyed this story and of course the incorporation of Magnus Pike, that iconic voice.
As a school boy, I went to this record store in Gulshan, Dhaka, to tape record some Pink Floyd from there. The store was playing low this track, and when the solo synth played, I asked the man, whatever the record is, please get me a tape! This album inspired me to join the merchant navy (One of our submarines), failing which I joined the army and after retirement from there now I finally own a ship! Thanks Mr. Dolby.
I always loved Thomas Dolby, and his use of synths, and sense of musical experimentation. He was also on the cutting edge of sampling back in the day, and had some great sampled bass sounds. His set up here reminds me of when I had a similar set up in my basement in the early 80's. I would sit there for hours with my keyboards, Linn Drum, and tape recorder, composing pop songs, and recording tracks. These days, I have come full circle back to my original first love, classical music! ... Peace! 🎼❤☮
I had the pleasure to see Thomas Dolby in concert in a very small venue in Washington DC called the Warner Theater in 1984. That was hands down one on the best concerts I ever went to (& I have been to many, many). He electrified the place with creative energy! Thanks Mr. Dolby. Great memories!
I was able to see him around this same time in concert at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. Also a small venue. Agreed, he delivered one hell of a show.
This was such a fun song to play. I was the bass player in a band in the early 80's. I pickup up a Roland SH-101 and had a great time playing the bass line on this song.
The Flat Earth is one of the great albums of all time in my humble opinion, writing, production and sonic quality. Thomas Dolby is a gift to those who appreciate sophisticated and not necessarily pretentious music.
Here's a musically-historical piece of info on Thomas Dolby's tremendous career: On Def Leppard's Pyromania, just as the album was nearing completion, producer Mutt Lange wanted some keyboard textures to "color" and augment some songs; Knowing Dolby, he asked if he would do a few sessions, and he readily agreed. His most noticeable contributions are on "Too Late for Love," "Die Hard the Hunter," "Foolin" and "Billy's got a gun" His contributions did enhance what was already a stone-cold classic album, and he's listed in the credits as "Booker T. Boffin."
I was blinded by Thomas Dolby's brilliance in 1981 when I first heard "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and was hooked! Been a fan ever since. I was in California then and was turning everyone I knew in the 1980s on to TD. His impressive body of work and musical poetry is amazingly awesome!
Thomas Dolby was 59 at the time of this video and still bubbling with enthusiasm, energy and getting those top notes. Nobody can live forever, but mental and physical youth is as much a psychological state as it is physical. Just keep doing what you love and being with those you love and everything will be good.
Breaking Bad and Jesse “science!” samples! AWESOME loved this man when I was a young teenager, and I still adore him. He’s the real deal. Watching him start to get comfortable behind his rig is awesome; he still moves the same way as he once did.

Dolby is a legend. The production on Aliens Ate My Buick is just something else. I really enjoyed this story and of course the incorporation of Magnus Pike, that iconic voice.
As a school boy, I went to this record store in Gulshan, Dhaka, to tape record some Pink Floyd from there. The store was playing low this track, and when the solo synth played, I asked the man, whatever the record is, please get me a tape! This album inspired me to join the merchant navy (One of our submarines), failing which I joined the army and after retirement from there now I finally own a ship! Thanks Mr. Dolby.
Such an underrated artist, his first album is a MASTERPIECE
I always loved Thomas Dolby, and his use of synths, and sense of musical experimentation. He was also on the cutting edge of sampling back in the day, and had some great sampled bass sounds. His set up here reminds me of when I had a similar set up in my basement in the early 80's. I would sit there for hours with my keyboards, Linn Drum, and tape recorder, composing pop songs, and recording tracks. These days, I have come full circle back to my original first love, classical music! ... Peace! 🎼❤☮
I had the pleasure to see Thomas Dolby in concert in a very small venue in Washington DC called the Warner Theater in 1984. That was hands down one on the best concerts I ever went to (& I have been to many, many). He electrified the place with creative energy!

This was such a fun song to play. I was the bass player in a band in the early 80's. I pickup up a Roland SH-101 and had a great time playing the bass line on this song.
The Flat Earth is one of the great albums of all time in my humble opinion, writing, production and sonic quality. Thomas Dolby is a gift to those who appreciate sophisticated and not necessarily pretentious music.

Here's a musically-historical piece of info on Thomas Dolby's tremendous career: On Def Leppard's Pyromania, just as the album was nearing completion, producer Mutt Lange wanted some keyboard textures to "color" and augment some songs; Knowing Dolby, he asked if he would do a few sessions, and he readily agreed. His most noticeable contributions are on "Too Late for Love," "Die Hard the Hunter," "Foolin" and "Billy's got a gun" His contributions did enhance what was already a stone-cold classic album, and he's listed in the credits as "Booker T. Boffin."
That doesn't surprise me as he is such a humble person.
Yes, I remember those little synth embellishments. They give the tracks a little ambiance before you get whacked by the drums and guitars! Brilliant!

I was blinded by Thomas Dolby's brilliance in 1981 when I first heard "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and was hooked! Been a fan ever since. I was in California then and was turning everyone I knew in the 1980s on to TD. His impressive body of work and musical poetry is amazingly awesome!

Thomas Dolby was 59 at the time of this video and still bubbling with enthusiasm, energy and getting those top notes. Nobody can live forever, but mental and physical youth is as much a psychological state as it is physical. Just keep doing what you love and being with those you love and everything will be good.
