It's like comparing a bike with a car. It's stupid and woke. There are tools made for specific situations. If you don't need to use them it's ok, but other people need it. A keyboard cannot give you a 4x4 or greater v-layout.
I think the bigger selling point about the Yamaha Pads is that it is standalone. I can just run it into my looper alongside my guitar and not carry a laptop around. When cellphones had headphone jacks, apps were a decent alternative, but that time is in the past...
wtf you talking about? When you connect a midi controllers to your phone and use koala or any other app then you can just use the output of your device. No need for a phone with audio jack since thats analog and now with USB its all digital.
So true New gear does help you to fight your "inner Schweinehund" just for a short time Just practice regularly with the stuff you already got Thanks a lot for sharing
I'm already a convert, and recommend trying a simple phone sampler! I use koala sampler (easier to get going) and flip sampler (better automation, you can do different time signatures simultaneously for polyrhythm loops) and I can play it on the bus and sketch things out, or play on a cheap generic 8x8 midi pad over USB into my phone to get pad sensitivity. FUN
yes, i have that same keyboard and would only add that i do not enjoy it for drumming. better than nothing but i can see pads being much nicer to use. the keys are sort of heavy and slow feeling on my akai.
Maybe the most important tip of all is to have a toaster nearby in case you run out of energy and need some peanut butter toast to help keep the creative juices flowing.
"FGDP isn't very appealing or attractive, but Yamaha _said_ it was designed for me, so I wants it!" 🥺 Looking forward to watching this episode of FOMO Therapy. 💪
thanks I love your "reviews", this one really is great as you also play drum fills / breaks (most youtubers dont play fills at all, I wonder why), and its little unclear if the device they review has also tomtoms (basic;).
Hi! I've been gifted with a FGDP-50 for Christmas but it has been backordered until February so I can't speak from experience, but it seems to me like $300 USD is a great deal for the functionality you get from this unit. $300 isn't a lot of money to me, though, so I may be biased.
The gear industry must hate you! lol I love koala. Especially because it's on Android (and kinda on windows and mac) It allowed me to finally ditch apple. ios has a ton of awesome music apps but working between them is a hassle, and I don't like ios.
Same here, my smartphone right now is a $40 sony xperia xz1c, it can handle everything from music creation and video shooting, will share it in recent future, it blowed my mind.
Today on Koala therapy... Haha but seriously do you have a way to make the class a one time purchase? How long to completion approxinately (will vary on skill)?
I'm not 100% sure but I think you just saved me $300...Thanks! I'm going to keep trying to resist the GAS syndrome. Was looking at the FGDP-50 for my live looping rig, but if I could play finger drumming as well as you on my keyboard, maybe I don't need it.
@@playpmThanks! I just subscribed and watched a couple of more vids. You are providing very useful information but also in a very hilarious way. You have a great sense of humor Michael.
You're obfuscating your Akai LPK25 MK1 - I'm using the MK2 😆. I like the minimal approach, but for finger drumming I use the Synido TempoPad. Those two MIDI controllers don't take much space on my desk, and I suggest that combo to all minimalist users. The 4x4 pad layout is the standard for many DAWs / plug-ins (Ableton drum rack, Flex Beat etc.).
PS: The idea of drum pads is to reduce the distance to the trigger point, which makes them more responsive, compared to a keyboard. You need that responsiveness to play drums fast. I love your minimalism, but in that case it makes sense to buy something. If you have to have just ONE MIDI controller for the sake of minimalism, I suggest to check out Alesis. They have keyboards with two octaves and 4x4 pads, which is perfect for EDM.
Ok, i know you always the best :) Now you making me doubt if i should grab it or not...... i won a 100 euro gift card to i will be paying like 80 euro's foir the 30 model..... BUT, i also just bought a SP404 Mk2... so i dont really need this 😂 But have a hard time getting started with the sp 404 because i need to get the right sounds etc so it takes me a while to make something and was hoping this finger drummer would speed it up since i can make easy drums :)
@@playpm To each their own? NO. You can’t replace an fgdp layout, it’s extremely intuitive, just like you can’t replace a double pedal. It just doesn’t work the same way, sure you can practice and whatever but it’s not even close, there’s no way you get as much flexibility, even in just pulling one out and playing from the built-in speaker or sending midi in, or playing an mp3 to practice to directly from the USB ports it has. It’s like neglecting the whole feel of the instrument.
Video is pointless, this doesnt work for any actual performing. Even if you are specifically a keyboard player (hi im a bassist, i need to add a drum machine to my rc 600, for more live looping jams,) So buddy, do i need it "for free"? Dont be cheap. I understand buying too much gear is an issue. But being overly cheap is just as annoying to look at. It diesnt show respect for the musical world, if all you do is try to replace everything with a cheap midi
"When I build a skill, I build it in me, not the gear." woof
When and while I'm building skill, I use nice quality tools.
Bark. Betters tools make quicker progress

True.
Please do Chompi next! I need an alternative!! hahah. Thanks for your awesome content man.
I feel inspired to go try to play drums on the keyboard I already have. Thank you!
showing this to quest for groove

Thanks for showing these alternatives before GAS starts kicking in.
thanks for talking sense
LOL you used the intro music from the Adam Friedland Show !!!
Interesting, seems I'm not the only one who like to use loops from GarageBand 😅
Hah I had the same thought
That’s what I was thinking. Is that just from garage band? Hilarious
We are, Global Garage Band
thanks for this.....lots of fun!!!! "Merry Christmas"
Michael, I think I'll start the new year with your finger drummer 101 :)
Get ready to enjoy the fun of finger drumming (b)

Actually it depends on your progress, you can totally finish all in just one month.
Great video, please could you share where you get your drum sound samples from which you used in this video?
It's just the builtin drum sounds from GarageBand 😂 you can get them all for free if you got any iOS or Mac device.
And not this not spam lol They also have a collection with lots of C notes from different instruments etc. I think its a must to have in the arsenal.

What is the guitar riff named/artist. It is dope, I've been trying to find it from the Adam Friedland Podcast
It is called Backroad Blues Lead Guitar 01 from Garageband built-in loop library :-)
@@playpm lol, gotta hand it to that Apple session player.
🎉
1:06 but what device is it? I don’t see it in the description.
It's just a regular 25 key midi keyboard, any brand will do.
I did not like this Finger drumming machine. You do have to press the pads pretty hard to play the sounds. Also it’s bulki and ugly imo.
Playing drums on a keyboard sucks, honestly. Don’t try to replace an FGDP with a potato just because it’s amost free.
To each their own, I actually prefer keyboard over drumpads.
