  • 384 flats (six residential towers) in Cà Granda, a suburb of Milan, have been deeply renovated, achieving 62% in energy savings, earthquake safety and resilience to heat waves.
Launched in 2021 with just one building, the project was launched by owners first with the intention of addressing waterproofing issues. However, during the co-design process with technical experts, owners decided to implement a holistic energy renovation to benefit from lower energy bills and better indoor well-being year round.
The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) could enable more Cà Granda-like projects thanks to the prioritisation of renovation of residential and worst-performing buildings. The directive is now in the last stages of negotiation between the European Commission, the Parliament and Member States, since the revision process began in 2021 within the context of the EU Green Deal. The negotiations are expected to close by the end of 2023.
