I think Side 1 of Making Movies is one of the best Sides of any album EVER. I burnt through it when I was young. Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet and Skateway. What an amazing trio of songs!
I remember staying home on Friday night as a teenager just to watch Dire Straits perform this song live. I wish Mark would perform this song again on his tours, its become sort of a lost classic, but one of my favorites from DS and this album in particular.
@@beverlyrankin5421 Caus there a songs like Romeo and Juliet and songs like Skateaway or Ticket to haven which are not as big as the Hits. They have too much to play all live.

I have been a Dire straits fan since the first time i heard sultans of swing as a teen. I always wanted to here a live version of skateaway thanks for posting it.
My favorite Dire Straits song from my favorite album by the band...I remember watching this as a stoned 16-year old. Ah, memories...still love music and keep up with it and see lots of live music. Haven't touched any illicit music 'enhancers' since I was 18...
"Remain in Light" released October 8, 1980 "Dirty Mind" released on October 8, 1980 "Making Movies" released October 17, 1980 "The River" released October 17, 1980 I was busy that week, running from my turntable to the record store and back. Music was an embarrassment of riches back then. Now, it's just an embarrassment.
Mark Knopfler visited the studio while Springsteen and the E. Street Band recorded The River. He was seriously smitten by the way Springsteen led everything, and he saw himself as someone who could be such a leader. What he forgot to consider was his lack of experience as a band boss compared to Bruce. David Knopfler left Dire Straits soon after.
I remember this! I was in a bar with a friend just after work, and I looked up at the screen, and there was my favorite band. Mark's guitar grabbed me from the first time I heard it.
THANK 😊 🙏 YOU so much 😊 🙏 💖 ❤: Love this album and especially every single song 🎵. Skateaway is a girl's fantasy to roller skate 🛼 as good as her, and my other favorite is the Bug 🐛, like Mark says ENJOY LIFE TO THE FULLEST WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR, even when you're the Bug 🐛. What a incredible imagination. Enjoy 🎶 TO the whole album and have yourself a time ⏲ ✨ of your life! See 👀 ya 🎶 👍 my friend!
Do you remember bein a kid listening to this and staring at all your dire straits album covers thinking, well maybe not thinking... knowing that these guys had your back
Making movies has accompanied me throughout my adolescence. I have consumed the cassette so far and it is still one of the most expensive things I have. A life with Mark!
This song was acknowledged 1 year go,dont recall ever hearing it,but when I first heard it I heard it maybe four times in one week, and realized why i never heard it before, cause i never had so many radio stations like satelite, and im in the midwest.

Pound per pound, tons per tone, Making Movies is the greatest album of all time to me...and that includes Beatles, Stones, Dylan and Neil Young. Dire Straits. Only 7 songs on that album...Skateaway, Romeo & Juliet, Espresso Love, Tunnel of Love, Solid Rock...man oh man...just great songwriting and music from Mark Knopfler. Genius. And still comprises great music in 2018..

I agree. And, I strongly believe Douglas Adams did too.
Expresso Love ?
Absolutely and this song in particular is criminally underrated
Great live version of Skateaway, can never understand why this wasn't played live more often.👋🎸
Never understood why Putin didn't invade 6 years ago...life's a mystery I suppose. Toro toro taxi see you tomorrow my son...
Thanks
Absolutely, one of my favourites, I wish there were more live versions to see on youtube.
Because you would need Pick Withers..
It's hard to play live. The studio recording is so perfect - very hard to live up to!

The emotional height of the chorus but still restrained brings tears of joy and makes you want to listen again and again

My favourite Dire Straits song off my favourite Dire Straits album. This is my jam.
100/100
I couldn't agree more!!!!!

This and Industrial Disease are phenomenal 💪

The good musicians seem to steer away from writing commercially...
Richard Hawley. All is not lost!

Dire Straits with Pick Withers was at another level. Another universe. Pick is just amazing.
Hated it when Pick left the band. He was amazing, set the groove in every track.

Totally agree! Pick just drives the band!

awesome songwriting as always with Mark Knopfler. Brillant album one of my all time top five.
for some reason, I love this melody. This make me calm, relax...
No backing track here.
This tune has got to be a challenge playing live. Moreover a testament to true talents involved. Knopfler killing it.
Can see his joy at nailing this at the ending, literally jumping for joy. The song is fresh here and challenging to play.We know he's a perfectionist.
