Oh hellya! I’m a 70yo and Dire Straits has been a HUGE part of my music life since the late 70s. Cannot explain why this song remains so obscure through the decades. It’s just my opinion but I think it’s by far MK’s sexiest song - the original video is icing on the cake.
I think I prefer this video version though... more for the money!!! I finally decided,,, i prefer the one in green top... the way those legs of her sway!!!! th-cam.com/video/W16Szy__gBY/w-d-xo.html&start_radio=1&t=217 and then there is THIS oldie but greatie... with same girls doing it th-cam.com/video/9lsl7h2j8Aw/w-d-xo.html
Same - that reverb on that drum beat hooked me the first time I heard it and then everything else fell into place with the piano layered in and the always absolutely amazing guitar. Dire Straits music stood apart as well - it really didn't sound like anything from that time and this is a great example.
Jayzik Azikiwe. One of the hottest girls I've ever seen, and the hottest on skates, period. Died of cancer almost 20 years ago, at 49 years young.....RIP, Jayz.....
the road is asubimposition. they are dancing jerky enuf to be on asphalt.? ...besides for the yellow double line to be wider then the central blonde's torso??? still, it was pretty well done for the day. i think "58" shows signs of formal ballroom & classic ballet training.

The girls in the skating bits here are April Corley (green top), Appelusa McGlynn (blue #58 top) and the fabulously gorgeous Candice Heiden---they were/are all part of The LA Roller Girls. I too am captivated by their performance here---hot stuff! :) And yes I'm still listening to and loving Dire Straits---Mark one of my favorite guitar players and song writers of all time. Great music does nothing but improve with age!
I looked up April Corley after seeing your comment, and I was shocked and saddened to hear what happened to her in 2015. While vacationing in Egypt, her tour group was 'mistaken for terrorists' and repeatedly strafed by the Egyptian Air Force. She herself got hit several times and almost died from her wounds. I was blown away by that, so damned horrid a thing.
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitar players to ever walk the planet, and I was a rink rat where I grew up South of Indianapolis in Indiana, so this song means quite a bit. Really good!😊
What a great video and song. The '80s were when videos were still an evolving art form. Mark's voice and guitar are so good, too. I have a baritone and can't do what Mark does.
I'm an alto baritone, and I can almost get down that low. I would never think of doing for this length of time. If I did pull it off people would end up calling me "Squeaky".
And a double kick drum line with only one kick drum. Right leg working overtime. Really old school, but it's effective. If it is a digital delay that yields this awesome groove, we'll I say it was the drummer using an available tool to its best advantage in the song in the early to mid 80s.
That’s probably not a volume pedal - on a Fender you can get that effect by crooking your little finger around the volume knob and plucking the string at the same time. Roy Buchanan apparently thought this up and a lot of players since have copied it.
R O L L E R G I R L-These girls bring on something that it pure magic. A feeling of happiness brings on a uncontrollable smile. These girls define beauty and perfection in every way imaginable. They are something my dreams are made of!
I love those girls! Especially that tall one with the dark Hair. Don't they skate Wonderfully? I have love this since I 1st heard it in 81! This before I saw the girls, but hey, You gotta admit, they add a little heat to the song!
I was and I'm still listening n 2024
Same!

Two minute guitar solo at the end… one of Mark’s masterpieces.
Seems like yesterday, I had Chicago plates, double leather uppers, new urethane wheels from babysitting money.

Another 80's tune the deserves so much respect.
Completely underrated tune. I think it is Dire Straights best song.
Wow! I thought the original Skateaway video was great..but I LOVED this version even more. I could watch those 3 skate for hours!
This is one of my all time favorite songs!!! 🎵
