Hands down the best explanation of how to replace a CV axle on TH-cam, if not the entire internet! Your explanation of how to get the axle to go back in was invaluable! I could not get the darn thing in for the life of me untill I watched this. Thank you!
I don't even have a Suburu, but I learned more helpful info while watching this video than I have from any of the videos I've ever watched on automotive repair. Thank you very much! Great video!
Thanks for the tips Brian. I can't believe how many years I've done this profession without having a customer buy CV axles which they needed yet. Since life isn't my refresher, thankfully you are. :) (probably 15% of how long you have, lol) I enjoy the BFATE!
On MR2 turbo axles, we use the axle as a slide hammer to get it out/in. Very stout joints and positively retained in the inboard joint. On MR2 N/A axles, we use a pry bar as a punch on the special tabs on the inboard joint and smack it with a 3lb. sledge to get it out and slide hammer it to get it in. Different joint construction means different processes. And I just had my brother's '04 STI front passenger axle out and back in yesterday. Man those are easy with the roll pin.
I've done thousands of CV axles and one thing I've had to start doing is filing the camber of the grooves. Sometimes the machining is bad and it will get hung up trying put it in. Thanks for the video.
"And then they went out to Tooele" & the mention of Skydive Utah: I live in Tooele lol and went Skydiving with Skydive Utah. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! If I had the funds to go again, and it wasn't December lol, I'd go again. Hell I'd go all day, every day if I could!! I want to get my A license soooooo bad... one day!!
I was terrified of damaging the trans internal gear putting the new axle in. I didn't think of using the u-joint as a "slide hammer" screwed with it for an hour try to get it to just slide in. I was putting the axle nut on 5 minutes after this video. Thanks!
My son is the hand glider instructor of the year and the youngest in the USA for 2017 . We live 1/4 of a mile from where they land and the paraglider I have done both up until my disability from the NAVY got to bad. Where are you at?
Let say some dummy forgot to mark the camber including hitting the CVs with a hammer and pry bar because he didn't know and in the process damaged the ring and lil teeth on the gearbox, whats the worst and best senario? What's the damage and how much NZD? thanks for sharing this vid
I did a couple SAR flights on Sunday- must have seen every large mammal out there. Saw Elk, deer, pronghorn, coyote, and a missing beef. Buzzed the beef to see if it was dead. Nope. Wouldn't stand up though. Just laid in the ditch and moved it's ears.
@@danielmontoya31dm no luckily the clip on the end of the axle wasn't bent or anything and didn't come off. I just wasnt pushing hard enough. I even bought a dead blow hammer but wasn't enough force to shove it in. It's better to do it by hand
@@patriciawilson4192 not the little clip on the end of the axel, out of the transmission on mine a tiny spring about 3 inches long came out. Idk what it is
Daniel Montoya it’s part of the axle seal if it’s not damaged you can try to put it back in it’s too much work but at that point better to replace them
I recently bought a pair of Mechanix cold weather work gloves and found that the fit makes a big difference. I can squeeze into a large pair but I have to work at it, that pair is toasty warm. The same glove in an XL might as well be non insulated for as cold as my hands get while wearing them.
I take out the lower control arm fasteners out and don't touch the bolts that hold the strut to the knuckle so I don't have to worry about setting the camber. On the older models that had a bolt to connect the sway bar end link to the control arm i would take that out and the lower ball joint nut and take the axles out that way.
Awesome video. I have the sedan version but same year. Couldn't help but notice you said you were doing a clutch job, how many miles does it have on it?. And does this mean we get a clutch replacement video soon lol. A guy can hope right.
I’m going to be changing out the axle on a Nissan maximum but I found your video helpful. One question I have is in regards to the clip that goes on the end of the axle to then be inserted into the transaxle. I’m confused as to the function of the grease. You mentioned that is meant to hold the clip in place but isn’t the clip held on the end of the axle in the recessed groove of the axle? Also is the opened end of the clip supposed to be on the top side or the bottom side of the axle?
The open part doesn't matter. Grease is thick, sticky & viscous. That's how it holds the clip centered on the shaft. It doesn't dangle low at the bottom and it shouldn't stick up at the top.
Thanks for the Subaru vids! Any tips on axle seals? I've got a persistent leak on driver's front axle, on an 04 WRX (with later stubless design, like the one in this video). Replaced seal twice with OEM, still leaking. No shoulder on driver's side carrier, not sure how far to drive seal in...
i have a 2015 wrx, and when i grab the axle part thats right next to the front tranny, i can feel a tiny bit of back n fourth play, is this normal? was wondering if i put a new seal would it fix the leak
I suspect my inner joint might be bad and have too much excess play. I know some in and out movement is normal at the joints but is there supposed to be radial or rotational play at the inner joint? If I hold my hand over the inner cup which in the video is green I can feel what I think are the bearings rotating inside the cup. The duct boots are not ripped and the car has really low miles. I suspect the axle was just defective from the factory. I don't think it's normal but just confirming before pulling the axle.
Is it better to replace the ripped rubber boot/repack with grease than replace the whole unit? I bought a NAPA brand unit, but I'm a little torn between the 2 jobs. Thanks, Mark
Replace. You can't be sure there won't be internal damage to the joint and for the price difference it doesn't make sense to repack and reboot. 20-40$ vs 90-120 for new. If money is tight it's worth a shot but the best way is new axles. It's also worth just doing both sides. My left rear was clapped but I did both and when we pulled my right rear it was way looser despite not making noise. Probably would've failed shortly after.
Hello Brian. I'm not sure if you'll st this, I'm was trying to figure out how to comment. K so i need a head gasket replaced on 2000 subaru forester. Do you possibly know of a good place i could get that done maybe in Syracuse Ny or Bville?
Thank you for the post:) quick question, do we have to change the rubber seal when replacing the cv joint? Saw some vids where people do and some don’t . Thx :)
You dont have to, but they are cheap and you will be pissed when you tear one and gear oil starts puking everywhere and then having to go get a replacement. They are like $8 from the dealer. They are different part numbers side to side so be careful.
what kind of grease should be used to lubricate the circlip? I know he said synthetic but I see people saying that no grease is compatible in this situation, etc.
I replaced a CV axle on my 2014 Crosstrek last month and I neglected to grease the end of the shaft. It was lightly greased already from the manufacturer... Do I need to take it apart and re-grease it or what?
No, it runs in an oil bath anyway in the final drive. The grease is there just to hold the clip in during assembly and make it a lot easier to get the unit into the drive, plus gives just a little extra lube on the shaft seal during assembly so it has a lower chance of tearing. If it had some grease it was fine. Next time remember just a small amount of grease, basically a thin film all over the metal shaft and splines, especially on any steps and where the seals will run, and a little more by the clip so it does not drop down loosely when you turn it, just moves slowly down.
I've read anecdotes that claim aftermarket Subaru axles don't balance well and can lead to a shimmy when driving. Do you use aftermarket axles on the Subaru?
I have used rebuilt axles from Advance on more than one Subaru and never had any vibration issues. That's my experience. If a car is worth $2-4K I can't see throwing big money on new OEM axles. Most times replacing the cracked CV boots early are the key to saving the oem. BTW, i am subbed to your channel and appreciate what you do. -Glen
Great question- some rebuilt axles had/have problems. I've talked about this in prior videos. The inboard joint is female on older models. The metal was softer and some rebuilders only replaced the outer joint/boot and didn't do anything about wear to the inboard joint spline wear. If you find a Subaru with the old design CV axles that develops a vibration at highway speeds after receiving a remanufactured axle- check it for play between the transmission output shaft and the female inboard socket of the reman axle.
rear CV axle C clip on the older 98 Subaru legacy outback does the C clip stay in the diff .mine stayed in ,i took it out .i think i made a big mistake
Brian i just saw your vid on a bmw seat repair...is there any way you can show me how to wire this seat to a 1968 GS400 Buick or anyone who might know something of this issue
Hey Lee. Obviously I've never done that exact thing, but where I would start is to download the wire diagram from the year, make and model of the donor car the seat came from and send power, and ground to the wires you need for power and terminate all the memory and position BCM stuff. Just set it up to motor off the switches.
Hi Brian, I really appreciate your videos and have learned a ton from you. I watched one the other day where you showed the trick of drilling three small holes in the thermostat for a head gasket issue. I followed your advice on my 1997 dohc legacy outback. My question for you is, how long can I expect this to last? I haven't seen any coolant in the oil, only exhaust gasses in the cooling system. Thanks again for all you do! .
0:44 I accidentally remove that bolt. my car is shake a lot when I press the gas at high speed and when I stop pressing the gas the shake stop. Could be because I removed that bolt?
Traveling Subaru lol wheel almost fall off? I had some kids come to my house to pick up a 98 legacy I was giving away. Told them numerous times they needed a trailer because it didn't have axels. They showed up and we're going to flat tow it with their grandparents van
briansmobile1 I turned it around and pulled it backwards with a car dolly with no CV axle and after about 2 mile it started to sway I pull out and it was spitting bearings everywhere lol just another day around here😎
This is not correct. If you take the steering knuckle off from the bottom via the pinch bolt on the lower ball joint, it's a 15 minute job and does not require any alignment because you are not touching the camber bolts or tie rod. Consult the Subaru technical service manual.
