  • The V-1 Flying bomb was the first of a series of Hitler's vengeance weapons designed to terrorize the British and their allies.

    The worst part isn't hearing it, is NOT hearing it. It shuts its engine off moments before impact. So if it suddenly goes silent, it means the target is you or very close to you.

    The little spinning propeller at the front is to measure the distance. If you know how often it spins in a certain amount of time, and know the speed of the rocket, you can estimate the distance travelled.
    After the set number of revolutions, the bomb would drop down and explode on the ground. All you needed to know was the distance to your target (e.g. London).
    Not a precise mechanism, but enough if you want to hit a large city.

    My grandmother was in London during The Blitz. She used to tell me stories of when she and her girlfriend were working late nights cleaning an old theatre. She said you would hear the sirens and all the city lights would go out, then would come the sound of the V-1. She said hearing it was always OK. In fact you prefererred it because you knew where it was an could hear it fly over. She said the most terrifying moment if you were caught out on the street was when the V-1 engines cut off.
    Complete silence.
    She said that was when you would just crouch there not knowing where it would drop.
    The silence was absolutely gutwretchingly terrifying.
    Then BOOM!!
    Apparently, when the engines cut, the V-1 would start a steep incline to the ground, so if you heard it cut off above you, you were safe, But if you heard it cut off a bit aways from you, you were an immediate possible target, They used to pray to hear it stop above them.
    She said this would happen while on the buses too, where all the lights on the buses were off so it wouldn't attract attention and then you'd hear the whistling of the V-1 through the air for just a few seconds before it impacted nearby.
    Just going to work each night was a terrifying cat and mouse with death.
    She was just 17 years old.
    Just remember that when you are complaining about your life.
    Those who came before us living through hell on earth to give us what we have today.
    LEST WE FORGET.

  • @patrichausammann
    @patrichausammann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can't believe the Germans didn't put two triggers (an upper and a lower) and a "simple" shotgun in both wings. This would have meant that it would no longer have been possible to deflect the V-1 off course by touching or approaching another wing in order to disrupt the airflow. In addition, if the deviation from the gyrocompass was too great, a trigger with a safety timer could have been installed, which would have ignited the device within fractions of a second. On the one hand, this would have been very easy and, on the other hand, would have at least led to the loss of the enemy aircraft.

    The V-1 had wire-cutting blades on all the leading edges.
    A couple hundred were downed by barrage balloons - mostly by flying straight into balloons themselves, instead of the cables or netting they lifted. Many thousands more were entirely unhindered by the balloon defenses.

      There really isn't a guidance system. There's a compass and gyro to keep it on a fixed heading and just enough gas to run out over the target. The gyro just makes sure the V1 keeps the same direction.

  • @olivedrabgarage6243
    @olivedrabgarage6243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The allied aircraft that brought the V1's down actually flipped the wing tip of the missile with their own wing tip. Some were shot down by cannon fire but the resulting explosion caused a 360 degree debris field and the chase aircraft were hit with fragments. There's report on pilots "sitting" their aircraft on top of the V1's to try to disrupt its airflow, gyroscopic stability or damage the engine and its mounts. The real danger came from ground anti-aircraft batteries that were over zealous firing at the missiles even with allied chase planes and shot down some of those same aircraft.

    Are these *that* much worse than cruise missles I wonder?
    I know a modern cruise missile can go faster and is more accurate, but you could do relatively minor upgrades to this to fix that, hell you could control it like an R.C. plane.
    The only real difference then is delivery method.
    Jets are no doubt faster, but they're also far more expensive than this rail system they have here.
    It'd be a good half-way between artillery and airstrikes imo.

    • @JM64
      @JM64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Nazi's had other issues in their war machine.
      The closest they had to "autonomus" target tracking in WW2 would be the radio fuses the allies would use in AA shells, which would provide an air burst effect instead of having to hit directly to do damage.
      That has potential, but it's generally better if bombs directly hit if not penetrate their target to absorb more of the explosion and do maximum damage.
      Heat seeking projectiles wouldn't exist until well into the Cold War.

    • @Klimotine
      @Klimotine ปีที่แล้ว

      The war would of not have taken a turn, there was other issues and not just in their other weapons either the V1 had to be launched via catapult, it was inaccurate and due to the nature of pulse jets it probably wasnt able to turn very well even if it could track a target not to mention kinda hard to make your nice expensive flying bomb when your factories are bombed

      It is a little bit more comomplicated then that:
      1. The V-1 was such a basic design compaired to what the U.S. military had by 1945 (ASM-N-2 would be one example) that I dont think any american engineer gave a f*** about it.
      2. The americans were lacking behind in therms of rocket technology. However that was not because the germans were better at it but because the allies won the air war and allied bomber streams were way more efficient at strategical bombing then any V-2 ever could be, so there was no need to invest into rocket development.

      There was no such thing as AI in WWII. They were either radio controlled or they used a relatively simple computer to calculate distance.

    The video ended up visualizing effectiveness and importance of D-Day landing than title owner V1 itself
    This prove whenever you visualize D-Day landing and it's consequences alongside any other military event even for a mare second, they'll become small in comparison
    Still some of the French are saying they liberated themselves without anyone's help :/
