H1MIN: UP AA ROCKET Mk1

- An unusual anti-aircraft weapon at the beginning of WW2 was the wire-barrage rocket. The British Royal Navy had these on ships such as the HMS Hood and HMS King George V. Intended as an AA close range deterrent, it ultimately had limited use and effect. By the end of 1941 they were replaced with more reliable guns, but it was interesting to see rocket launchers so early on Naval ships.

if this was a success. we could have wing swords on planes.
Holy shit you’re right
Some German planes were in fact equipped with such devices to cut through barrage balloons during the battle of Britain
The Germans were not the only ones, I know for a fact the Lancaster had cable cutters and tbh I assume it was standard
Insert Japanese zero pilot duct-taping katanas to his plane here
Cable cutters are common on helicopters today.
Always like this
On paper? It's good
In practice? It's unreliable and it sucks
Basically every German tank design after the Panzer III
communism in a nutshell
@@ironicdivinemandatestan4262 you mean AFTER PZ.IV
@@ironicdivinemandatestan4262 the pz4 was pretty alright and the tiger 1 didn’t actually have too much reliability issues and was a good concept as a breakthrough tank. The only thing that crippled them really was the severe lack of spare parts and poor serviceability.
.....Jesus I just defended German tank design what a great way to start the year
It's what happens when smart people at desks design weapons (engineers and scientists), not the right people (people on the field with knowledge and sense of warfare).
Ideally, the people that actually fight should suggest ideas, and the scientists and engineers at the desks should use their knowledge to help make the soldiers' suggestions a reality, not the other way around.
It's a shame that all the cool ideas are impractical

Sorry for commenting this multiple times; it's just an important point that needs to be emphasized.
@@FFFFFFF-FFFFFFFUUUUCCCC you are not lying this time
@@FFFFFFF-FFFFFFFUUUUCCCC You have a good point there. Engineers and scientists should work with those who actually fight in the battlefield. Or else it will be another coll sounding idea that wouldn't be useful. Such as the Maus tank, sounds good, doesn't work. Very strong but tactically impossible.
@@FFFFFFF-FFFFFFFUUUUCCCC Pretty sure neither ballistic missiles, planes or nukes would have been fielded.
Marshal Ferdinand Foch once stated that planes were useless toys
@ "Make a bomb that goes boom, but much more boom and put it on a missile" is an idea that any soldier can make and forward to a scientist.
That is ridiculously clever! Also, I love the high quality renderings!
Not so clever if it was shot down in the demonstration by a basic error like flying back a mine
@GbbJunkie it could be effective, just not manageable, thus it is not clever because it doesn't do what it is meant to do
How can it be described as clever if it didn't work as anticipated?
@@zoperxplex The mechanism involving the drogue chute to pull the explosive was ingenious. I never would have thought of that. Sure, its effectiveness was limited, but we can still appreciate its clever design
@@gabedarrett1301 I agree
Rare to find a youtube chanel who explains something so interesting and well animated and that for a minute long video? i came for copper but i found gold...
Keep up the good work
But that short video usually need MORE effort that many 20 minutes videos.
@@user-cl4kc4st7z welp its really hard to animate with that kind of level
@@rinx7008 absolutely agree.
Maybe graphic designer, who is interested in history?
@Torynn Opheim 🤣🤣🤣
Look at some high quality content elsewhere. Such phrase (even with special image) is quite popular.
@Torynn Opheim well buddy this is internet and many people can copying any comments they want.even I can't do anything about it.
The system almost paved the way for AA Rocket Defenses
I'm curious, in what way? or just the step up from flak guns to rockets?
Didn't the germans have some usable AA rockets in WW2?
@@shadowraven3253
Yes but I’m not sure if they’re really that effective
Brits already got land-based UP 3in AA rockets with the world's first proximity fuze - photoelectric Pistol 710, and it got explosive mass instead of cable. They were put into real combat against German bombers.
Good way to start the year, love the concept behind it and sounds like something out of Star Wars, still cool to hear about.

*I've been interested in WWII since I was 8 years old. It amazes me how consistently this channel reveals something I never knew existed!*
Why are you typing in bold?
Fun fact these rockets also tested the first radio proximity fuse in June 1940
Unlike artillery, the rockets have very little spin so the electronics didn't have to be as resistant to g-forces in the later artillery developed versions (late 41)
That is very interesting was not aware of that fact, thank you for sharing that note!
Thanks for the info!
I see the underrated channel on youtube has posted a quality video again
Great video. Merchantmen were armed with similar devices. Prevented attacking planes from flying directly over the target as a rocket and wire were fired straight up from the deck.
Thanks for making these videos throughout this year, you definitely make my day better with these.
When H1Min ringing it's time for history lesson
Happy new year for you, fellow military-related topics fans
You are killin it. Your content is great, produced well, and gives great information.
Thank you!
Mans really pulled thru on NYE to give us another banger of a video. 💛
just binged your entire channel, awesome stuff
Thank you for still making content! Eagerly waiting for more!
Best new year present ever! Thank you for your extremely good videos!

Very inderrated channel, every episode here is gold...
Thank you !
The most underrated channel on youtube
Finally something good in 2020! Love your vids dude!
love this, ty for uploading
Didn't the Japanese also use some sort of AA rocket launcher on their carriers later in the war? I think it's called a 28 Tube AA Rocket Launcher. I can't really find much information about this weapon but Wikipedia says it was used on the Unryū class.
Yes they had 12cm AA rockets that worked similarly to the Type 3 incendiary shells fired from main guns.
There a bit of info in here, but as with many late WWII Japanese projects, there isn't much.

This channel is incredibly underrated.
Also, happy new year, we love your work man! Stay strong
Do more of these! You are so good at what you do.

Happy New year, this is propably one the best new year gift
Best new year’s surprise
I just found your channel recently and today, went and watched all your uploads.
.
This is a great channel, the animation is great, despite being 1minute it's very informative (I learned quite a number of new things).
But this channel's pro is also it's con; that it's just 1minute.
Still great work with this videos. You gained another sub, (I'm srsly wondering why you don't have more subs tbh)
Great to see you back . Happy New Year.
This channel is a hidden gem.
I have been waiting for these new vids. Keep em coming. We love em
More to come!
Also good to remember that planes only began to fly faster and higher, making these and barrage balloons less and less relisble
EPIC animation man! Keep it up, we love them!
Thank you for your awesome content and you make great content at its best for a minute
Your animations are out of this world.
Just how I like it !!!! I knew the concept, but a clear, concise and well executed illustration of the intended use of the UP.
More YT content should take a leaf from your book. Well done !!!
P.S have a subscription.
Finally you upload again
The king is back
This channel is so underrated
nice content! I am really into history and weapons and this is best channel ever!
Best way to end the year right here.
My god, something I didnt know about the 2nd war. Good job
Great videos and channel. I just want to thank you for not having annoying background music. Sound effects (e.g. the explosions) are nice touch tho.
Saw three vid in a row and ran to subscribe asap. Keep it up.
Underrated channel

YES NEW VID
British Navy: ahahaha, got you now!
Luftwaffe: oh nooooooo
*Flies round it
British Navy: Oh blimey how are we gonna shoot them jerries down now!
*Sips cup of tea* , O h n o .
-Royal Navy Sailors, 1941
Oh no he's flown round it.
I mean, if you force the attacking aircraft to change course to avoid the barrage and it thwarts their attack run, you've still succeeded in the goal of protecting the ship. However, when the ship itself comes at risk from the mines blowing back as happened during the demonstration with Churchill, and you have other options for AA weapons that actually just, you know, destroy the aircraft outright, you can see why the UP didn't last long.
He has risen
Everybody gangsta until the aerial mines start blowing back towards you
Dude your stuff is amazing
Best channel
great job keep doing m8
Incredible
Wow youre so good happy new year
finally new video
A cool concept
great work, keep it up.
Omg they're back
They're back .❤❤❤❤
Yeaaaa he posted let's go
You deserve more sub !
Hell yeah. I love your videos.
Unfaithfull colonials laugh in VT fuse.
The Chad VT fuse v.s. the Virgin anti-air parachute mine.
You should look at what the VT fuze was originally developed for
My favourite shell type is the AP-VT (minengscho)
Which was a UK invention...
Passed to the US via the Tizard mission, US industrialised the design.
Other Videos: *18 minutes long diddnt even understood a thing*
This video: *1 minute and knows everything*
Keep up the good work dude
Just found this channel but damn it’s super underrated, if you take suggestions it would be cool to see a breakdown of the US experimental Bat Bomb
Thank you for the comment. Do take suggestions for future content, but right now there is a backlog of really great ideas. Yes, that Bat bomb was quite an interesting experiment, comical if not for its sinister intent.
very nice
O hay happy new year my dude!
OH! A NEW UPLOAD!
Nice!!!
Make more videos
Impressive animations
Very short and accurate videos
Superb
My god this bite sized video is good! Good work! BTW can you take a look at Hedgehod ASW used by HMS?
borrowing this for my alternate universe steampunk universe
I mean so many of these things you have on the channel seem like such an amazing idea like it sounds like it should be so effective and even that anti bomber bomb from the Japanese
Happy new year
Same to you
holy shit he uploaded
mommy, can i get RAM for my air defence?
mom: we have RAM at home
the RAM at home:
Why would I want ready access memory as my air defense??
@@miguelgarcia6493 I hope this is bait. RAM in this context is Rolling Airframe Missile, it's basically the current top-of-the-line CIWS missile for NATO.
