Alex Hutchings and Guthrie Govan are among the minority that can show off their wide vocabulary and supreme talent, and still manage to make catchy music at the same time!
His phrasing is like poetry... and his secret is that he isn't afraid to feel it when he plays.. unlike the morons who criticize his facial expressions because they don't have a clue as to what is going on...
I only became aware of this young man today, and I'm sure glad I did. I listen to all kinds of players in blues, jazz, rock and a variety of fusion styles, and it's always great to come across someone who is technically proficient but still understands the importance of soul and emotion. I particularly like his respect for the single note. Periodically during the song he'll come off a complex run and stop and let a single note ring for a couple of beats, throwing in a bit of a bend or vibrato. Good stuff. I'll definitely be seeking out more of his work.
If you released albums of this style I’d definitely buy them and look for you to tour. I’ve loved this since it dropped. Love your style! God bless you Alex
I've been listening to and watching A LOT OF modern electric guitarists (from jamtrackcentral virtuosos, youtube players to guitar competition winners/contestants) So far Alex Hutchings is the only modern guitarist who can holds the candle to Guthrie Govan (Blues, jazz, playing over changes, rock, country, funk, pop, r&b, shred, fusion, acoustic, deep harmonic/theory knowledge, soulful bends/vibrato, creative improvisation, diverse technical ability, incredible phrasing & timing, catchy melodies, technical proficiency, precise/accuracy). Even Frank Gambale and Guthrie Govan are HUGE fans of Alex Hutchings!
One of the wonderful things about this track (apart from the weird dog bark sound at 1:29) is just how tastefully and musically Alex outlines the passing chords. Personally, even after playing guitar for some 20 years I can only look (and hear) in envy at such mastery of the musical language.
+Daniel Verberne Well,, for one, you can thank Mr. 335,, Larry Carlton,, for whom this backing track was both written and inspired by! Alex called the song, "HAPPY AS LARRY", because almost always, Larry Carlton is SMILING,,, during his performances,, and,, his music, ALL OF IT,,, is quite frankly,,,,, "HAPPY" , and upbeat, much to our advantage as listeners! Also,, don't be intimidated by Alex's playing! He wouldn't want you to feel that way at all! I have spent years working on Larry Carlton's style of playing,, and it's finally coming about! If you havn't already listened to Larry Carlton,, please check him out! You will be amazed!!!! Cheers!!!
Thanks for the reply! Actually,, most people speak too fast, and in writing comma's create the "reins" so to speak,, to prevent run on sentences and are always used QUITE OFTEN, in any good literature!!!
hutchings and govan are the top two current kings of the instrument, without a doubt. we should all aspire to be like them and use it as inspiration to better our playing
man...he plays the right sentimental note in every chord change, good dinamics, awesome techinque..what else can I say? one of the best guitarist in Europe.
Alex is the next Larry Carlton, this song would make Larry happier then ever! Wonderful, simply wonderful, today was my first time listening to Alex, incredible! If anyone knows his schedule, if he's touring soon, please message me! Thanks!
Absolutely wonderful style and phrasing. When you want to get technical, the melodic often suffers, but this is perfect in every way. Yeh it's got complex technique but so much in harmony with all the components.
I honestly cannot like this enough, I must listen to this song at least 5 times a day.. It's just so beautifully phrased throughout, the ending section between 2:34-2:52 gives me the worst case of goosebumps every single time... Now my question is, where in the hell is this album Alex? I can't get enough of your playing, TAKE MY MONEY and stop forcing me to come watch these videos everyday!!!!
some people commented that they don't like how he makes faces when he is playing. With that, I can't tell they are not musicians and that would be the least of my worries on this video. His playing abilities, style and improvisation are exceptionally good.
Alex sure does have Larry Carlton's "feel", for sure! I have been getting goosebumps for forty years now from Larry's playing,, and now,, getting it from Alex! I guess it's stereo-goosebumps",, what a dream!!!
@@s1iznc1d34 Hi and thanks for your comment! Yes indeed,, the first time I heard the song, "Midnight Parade" from Larry's 1980 album, "Strikes Twice" it was ~goosebump-city~ !!! I had heaard of Larry from the Jazz Crusaders group, and Steely Dan albums, but I hadn't paid enough attention to Larry yet. But that night I heard "Midnight Parade" on the car radio,, I was reacted exactly like you did! I was completely shocked by his playing, his sound, and writing! 41 years later, I'm still getting the goosebumps. and no one else except Alex here, and Robben Ford effect me that way! God bless, and stay safe!!! p.s.- I have a few short videos here on youtube that your welcome to check out if you'd like! Just type in the browser: Geetarnut and you'll see around 4, or 5 videos from around 10 years or so ago! Give me a thumbs up! Thanks much!!!! Sonny Cannon.
I first saw Alex playing in a restaurant in Kingswood, Bristol UK. I was blown away and I cannot understand how he is not flying high and held in high esteem. He has been better, in my opinion, than Gilmour, Beck and Clapton, who i’ve seen
They are miked in the the live room. The amp stays in the control room with us. All will be revealed in great length with photos and written details in a special section of our new site...coming very soon. Thanks for the support!
His note choice is so different and wonderful but he is in such control too. He knows exactly what every "wrong" note will be speaking, if that makes sense. So much power and such delicate delivery.
One of the best things about guitar is that it can sing really well. Alex is phenomenal here, doing fusion of jazz and funk...soul even! This song leaves listener with a pleasant feeling in the heart. Top stuff!
Just when I thought I'd discovered all the guitarists I'd need, I find two new ones both in the same evening........ Jess Lewis and now Alex Hutchings..... Man, the digging never ceases !!!
Deviating from all the fabulous music by these artists at JTCentral, I am just amazed to see the honourable Mr. Boob Wiley dessimating the spirit of good music everywhere. You are a piece of work. And why does everyone care so much about facial expressions? These guys play with incredible soul. You could at least pardon him for maybe overdoing his facial expressions which has nothing to do with his musicality.
bravo voilà un guitariste qui ne fait pas qu'une imitation de larry mais qui joue avec son style personnel et dans l'esprit de ce qu'on entend de larry carlton joli phrasé agréable à entendre
This popped up Alex, on my playlist youtube made for me, your one of my new faves dude..Respect from NZ country roads. This BT kicks ass, love the changes, il do a BT up ..Watch this space
Alex Hutchings and Guthrie Govan are among the minority that can show off their wide vocabulary and supreme talent, and still manage to make catchy music at the same time!
Amen to that brother
Thebigbowler balawan
Totally agree with it
His phrasing is like poetry... and his secret is that he isn't afraid to feel it when he plays.. unlike the morons who criticize his facial expressions because they don't have a clue as to what is going on...
amen
Ure so right!
awesomejohnnet It looks so much more "real" when they get all emotional
If you can't feel it fuck off and build remote controlled toys
my problem I show faces like that but I still sound like shit
If Larry is half as happy as I am after hearing this, well, he must be having one helluva day.

he knows how to show expression in every notes and every licks he played
his face's dancing with the notes, so beautiful
My most recent guitar hero. Excellent
Man his playing is great phrasing fantastic

Yeah man! Lile that!
I am sure they are. He's a damn fine player. Like Guthrie Alex plays in multiple styles and he nails each approach
Alex is gifted by God .... Awesome playing

Woah, that's a lot of commas there. Thanks for the response though, I appreciate it.

+Sonny Cannon full stops (....) are normally used when you want a pause longer than a comma will provide.
He is. There's room for everyone. That's the beauty of art.
I am happy as you Alex.
Hutchings is one of the best for sure, i literally enjoy every note he plays
hutchings and govan are the top two current kings of the instrument, without a doubt. we should all aspire to be like them and use it as inspiration to better our playing
The world wouldn't be able to hold that much epicness, it will just implode.
Yep.He may be the best around right now.
I'm blown away!!! This man is genius!!!
Very smooth. You can learn a lot from this guy, the facial expressions are what makes it perfection lol
man...he plays the right sentimental note in every chord change, good dinamics, awesome techinque..what else can I say? one of the best guitarist in Europe.

With playing like that, he can put on any face he wants!
I'll still be there, listening.
This guy feels every note...Love it!
Every time I finish listening and watching Alex Hutchings play, I regret that TH-cam has only one "like" button on each video.
Absolutely wonderful style and phrasing. When you want to get technical, the melodic often suffers, but this is perfect in every way. Yeh it's got complex technique but so much in harmony with all the components.
It was 10 yrs ago when i discover Alex's videos and it still amazes me

Excellent phrasing! Even thought he was just jamming over a backing track but he still managed to make it sound like a song
some people commented that they don't like how he makes faces when he is playing. With that, I can't tell they are not musicians and that would be the least of my worries on this video. His playing abilities, style and improvisation are exceptionally good.

Man, the digging never ceases !!!
I don't have words to express after watching this solo!! Awesome👏👏👏👏
one of the best players on planet earth! its like you run out of words when you wanna describe discrete things such as: FEELINGS
simply staggering!
such a emotional play as carlton ever! it remind me every time he plays a guitar.
Alex Hutchings is absolutely amazing.
He also looks EXACTLY like JACK BLACK!!! My god the resemblance is uncanny.
huh man,no words can describe what are you doing here. when i'm sad i just listen to your playing, and it makes me happy. It's absolutely AMAZING!
he really know how to shred in good melody and emotion

I've been replaying 1:06 - 1:12 for 20 minutes now. I think I could do this forever, the execution of that lick here was just perfect.
😆
I still come back to this video all these years later. That one note at 1:07 is so perfectly deliberate. Genius
