What sets this gal apart from the so-called best girl players is she is never rushes through the song & pays attention to melodics while still letting it rip. No hair toss, look at me shred shred shred with no real feel. She can shred as good as they, but she has feel & technique in droves something i rarely hear in girls her age even if this is an older clip it's still her best & Larry Carlton would be proud. Thanks to Alex for helping her & man what a solo he drops before Jess takes it out. I've been playing since the late sixties & i must admit she is the real deal. Fantastic tones, bends & the cleanest of notes. And here she's only 16, Holy Moly what a pure talent. Great work young lady as is all your shared music. As one guy here says it makes no difference male or female this is about talent & great playing.🎸🎶💎
I love Larry since ever. This interpretation from Jess let me leterally let cry. Almost unpossible to surpass the emotionall feel that Larry put in this piece of song, but Jess in this was able to keep fullyoriginal partiture with her own soul. Greatest interpretation ever
Wow! Both great! Saw Larry live @ least twice, listened to him a ton with Steely Dan & his group. Jess really captures Larry's tone, & phrasing, & especially his subtle vibrato at the end of lines! Bravo, y'all, well done!
I never tire of watching this after 100's of times - such impeccable tone and phrasing. This is a lesson unto itself which incorporates the absolute best of the jazz-rock idiom. Jess has such control over every note. She even adds more microscopically-accurate flavor to each note than Larry did on the original.
Both of 'em never cease to amaze me. Probably the 50th time I came here just to gawk at the phrasing, tone, and pure genius from them. I can't give enough praise for this performance
I agree, I would bet 95% of the people that gave this a thumbs down did it by mistake or are mentally disturbed, not that there's anything wrong with that!
I keep coming across this video every now & then over the past couple of years … And every time I do I always have to watch at least once if not twice or more … I think I watched it the day before yesterday & here I am again …
Noticed there are 264 thumbs down. You poor jealous plebs. One of the best instrumentals ever written played with passion skill technique and more. A kin masterpiece. Superbly well done to both pkayers.
What really blows me away is the way she flows over all the key changes like they weren't there, damn, how does someone so young play like she's been doing it for 50 years.
Never mind the fact that Jess is a "one of the great female players", she is simply one of the great players. Close your eyes; you can't hear gender in the music; you just hear great phrasing and tone.
Let's not get carried away. Long way to go. But farther down the road than most. Just listen to Hutchings play and you can understand where she stacks at this point. But she's well on her way.
Jess Lewis is F**king Incredible, remarkable and above all admirable. I can't even fathom being that virtuosic at that age. I hope she continues to blow minds
Jess Lewis and Alex Hutchings! wow that was some nicely played and recorded guitar playing indeed, Jess's touch and feel is so f**king good, nice one guys!
Incredible cover here!!! Two really hot players taking on a HOT TUNE ....... and making it even HOTTER!!! Didn't miss a lick ..... and neither Alex or Jess took it easy on themselves either! They tore it UPPPP~!~ One of the best live recordings on TH-cam~!~
Wow, Jesse really knows how to make a statement with her guitar!! I never feel like she rambles.... which is rare in this genre nowadays. She really plays with a lot of feeling and timeless phrasing. I can see her opening some eyes for a lot of players in the future.
I have to agree with you and I like to mention something else ! And that is There's noone else from Whom You can watch BETTER than Jess Lewis she is probably One of the best aswell as playing with a kind of Finger souplesse I havent seen before So when you want to play Larry Carlton Jazz Tunes Well if you cant Find A video of Larry Carlton himself preferably Live So I can check out how and what he is doing! I would advise you to watch Jess Lewis download the clip and play with the VLC VIDEO APP SO YOU CAN CONTROL THE PLAYBACK SPEED IF YOU GO VERY SLOW THE TONE STARTS TO JENGLE BUT YOU CAN SEE EXCELLENT WHAT SHE IS PLAYING IN FACT TODAY I PLAYED HER VERSION OF ROOM 335 AND IT IS UNBELIEVABLE WHAT SHE DOES 🎉
I hope Larry Carlton is seeing this. Magnificent! Everytime someone tells me "my fingers are too short for exceeding at guitar" I show them this. I love the unique precise technique of Jess and the miniscule intonations that only Alex brings into playing so perfectly. Isn't she a student of his? Could hear this all day...
@h.carter5346 Well, what's HIS problem!? These two are guitar geniuses, & it's a fine tribute to Larry's music! "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery," someone said..
The Goddess are rising....Jess Larry must be proud that you rip shred and put it all together again with such beauty! And the brother that answers you, what a guy.. Brilliant .
This kid is just fantastic in everything from her timing to her choice of notes and attack. Plus she seems like she's having a great time - though she always seems shy. Unleash her with Tal Wilkenelfd - these two would be crazy in a band together.
Rinke Heerema nah I know this solo note for note because I did a report on it at school and I performed it. It really is note for note the same just find the original and listen to it
This is the only track available on the site that does not have the main solo transcribed. This is because it is a cover and Jess plays the track pretty much note for note. The free download comes with Alex's parts transcribed as this is original. Thanks
Larry Carlton (who has played with Steely Dan) has his own instrumental adaptation of the song, which he uses for his solo shows. This improv is based upon that.
Saw Alex Hutchings just two nights ago with Steven Wilson. Incredible show. Alex is a beast. I went in blind. Never listened to Steven Wilson before or Porcupine Tree for that matter. Never the less, a great show. Everyone was tight. As to be expected. I wish Jess would tour. I'd love to hear her play live. Still one of my favorite guitarists.
Stumbled on this vid and had never heard of the track, or Jess or Alex, and have been listening to nothing but for weeks. Jess you are simply oozing talent and you are going to go a long way ... wow wow wow simply doesn't cut it, but I can understand why superlatives probably simply weren't enough.

I really, really like her tones, dynamics, etc. too! Hope she'd share the specs of her signal chain starting from guitar/pickups (custom shop? What pickups?) to pedals (brand/type/model, etc.), amp, settings. That was truly amazing playing and sound! I've watched this a few times now, too. :)
@@TruthBeTold121212 I just did a search, there was indeed some bass popping up but most of her recent uploads are guitar playing ones. So she does both, plus a bit of keys it seems.
I've heard dozens of covers of Room 335 and you could put a gun to my head and ask, who's verizon do you like the best and I'd say, Jess Lewis. There is so much feeling in her phrasing without over doing anything or trying to put in more notes than it needs. You don't put in ten pounds of sugar when baking a cake just because you can. Jess you get 10 out of 10 in my book.
Check out the first ever Masterclass from Alex Hutchings: bit.ly/AlexHMasterclass
Not to be rude to the original artist but I absolutely love this cover way better than the original

This is my favorite version of this song. The marriage of the soft, jazzy pop with searing guitar solos was what made yacht rock so fun.
She plays this with great restraint, sensitivity, feeling and technique. Fantastic.

Jess, very Larry phrasing. I'm hard to impress. You did.
Alex, you bring Larry's phrasing into a more modern style. Also impressive.
Thank you.
The smart girl don't tries "fighting" the amazing Alex's solo, but doing her own thing, and it's very well done, indeed. Hat up!

That groove reminds me a lot Peg by Steely Dan...

Carl Olav håkå You are right Carl, Larry played that. The thing is that the groove is quite similar to Peg by Steely Dan.
Matteo Allegra Sorry Matteo, but the bass line is not similar to most 80's pop hits fortunately.

Hahaha. I hoped so! Steely Dan is a too serious thing to allow anybody to joke about !!! :)

Fantastic Job, Well Played. "Good", She's Bloody Brilliant.
WOW ... better than the original. thank s Larry for this tune, thank s Jess and alex for your new version
yep. one of the best take on this song! I even say that this is better than the steve lukather's one (with larry carlton!)
Better than the original? Definitely a nice cover but not better than LC's . I do enjoy the interpretation and tone in this cover.

First off:no more excuses about your hands being "too small". PRACTICE.
exactly.
Small feet too apparently. Big hair though.
