Bye Bye oil pressure! Chevy 350 low oil pressure

- I screwed something up.. Ive been cruising the wagon and I noticed that it got very low oil pressure at idle when its at temp... In gear at full operating temperature it has almost nothing.. The gauge barely reads... Yet the engine is quiet as a church mouse.. what did I do wrong?? I guess Ill have to pull the motor back out to see! Grrrrrr

That’s fine man. It should climb when revving up. That is most indicative. This thing is fine
Have you ever overpressured your gauge? A bourdon tube once sprung goes out of calibration - permanently. Something like 120% of full scale pressure will ace most gauges. I personally like to stay inside of 90% of full scale on any pressure gauge. If yes... that indicates some kind of blockage/occlusion in one of your oil galleys. Do a complete lifter teardown and cleaning if you pull that engine to check for spun bearings etc. If no... [and swapping to another gauge shows the same] I might suspect oil breakdown: change it, and see what pressure does. I had vacuum leaks on an engine months ago that caused LT fuel trim to stay boosted 11% - after about 2500 miles of cylinders getting fuel washed from the most recent oil change, mileage REALLY took a dump [almost cut in half] and I had to dig in and fix it. So I replaced several hoses and changed the oil and... back to normal. Fuel trim behaving inside a nice 1% window now.
GM manual says these small blocks only need 6 psi per 1000 rpm.
Gas in the oil can do this to. See if you can light the dip stick.
100% happened to me on my 355 breakin.carb dumping floats not adjusted correctly. dumped oil and was like WTF lol
What is normal temp and normal oil pressure range on chevy 350 small block?
My 400 sbc 327 crankshaft I have same problem my motor crank up only getting 25 ibs oil pressure know matter what oil rpm my engine own engine tested stand running know oil leak help out each other my engine run hot 🔥 several times
Oil pick up tube o ring?
Vacuum head gasket leak?
Did you end up finding out the reason?
Change the oil and filter. See if any metal is in the oil and filter. I know that there isn't any knock but could the flat tappet cam have croaked and sent crap to the bearings? Thats why I am swapping out my 454.
Very possible it runs perfect otherwise
@@beeterolds Yea it sounds really good. My 454 doesn't sound good at idle. Rod knock. But then it has 5 pounds of oil pressure at idle. Maybe try 20-50 oil like the other guy said or a different gauge to make sure. I tried a different gauge but it didn't help mine.

@@benjaminwhitfield4890 No, I have been working on finishing my shop. I have a lift to install so I am not going to pull the engine until I get the lift installed. Are you having a low oil pressure problem also?
My small block mopar dropped to 15 psi and I freaked out lol

Cam or main bearing issue can restrict oil flow. The last time I saw degrading hot oil pressure it was a wiped main bearing. JD

Man that sucks!!! I’d try changing the oil !!Sometimes extreme heat tends to thin the oil maybe go with a little heavier weight

Don't do that. It will fix pressure sure but will form air bubbles between the bearings and starve those tolerances of oil. Always use the correct weight.

I have a chevy 350 30 over runs as it warms up it drops oil pressure but since I got engine back from shop oil pressure has bounced constantly between 30 and 50 psi at idle. Builder says it is the 450 lift cam causing it
If your builder said the cam is affecting your oil pressure i would find a new builder.

posibly wrong oil type used if you add on that coolant electrolisys failing oil senzor who gets grounded all the time you get engine run on if a computer see those changes it will try to retard ignition timing due to all electric crap it can cause to go to much retarding ore advancing depending on the engine temperature it will act out of faze fiering that is known as waste spark ignition exept if you dont have waste spark it will work with 1 coil to exept you dont get fiering on compresion your engine will fire at exaust stroke it is considered as lean burning mode your lucky you get preshure at all if your brakes go slowly bade ore you luse brake fluid and preshure that is the cause the injectors will still fire but in to another direction that is a posibility as well if oil diferences make valve timing go up and down by changing that state will interact with retarding and advancing ignition to,related to this problem is static from alternator ore audio equpment can cause similar problems I wuld check the voltage stabilazer inside the dashboard as well by carbureted engines suspect culd by a preheater and the carburetor selenoid as well because they evaporate fuel to gas in cold weather makeing easy'r start for engine it does not mean the gage is faulti some thing ells can cause isues

Well, if it shits the bed we need an oil pump autopsy.
I think Robert Hanna is correct, I run 20w50 for that reason.
Might have to give it a try. But my question is how does it lose its oil pressure in one day??? 🤔
@@beeterolds I've had a manual oil pressure gauge fail because a bit of slug clogged the line. Can you check it at the engine??

I changed the oil and used 20w50 it helped but still low at idle @ full temp

10lbs per 1000 rpm is normal.

Don't know everything 1st I ever running into oil issue I'll never install in car always checking engine own my test engine stand fire 🔥 up break in couple days than changes oil pull pan off clean oil pain checking for metal this sbc dart block 400 destroke 3.25 crankshaft problems no oil pressure know matter we're rpm I'm running online 25 ibs helps out thanks
Probably cam bearings man, shit always sucks.
Its not hard to change oil pump and its only 30 dollars on amazon just chang it no bigy better that messing up a 350
