I cried listening to the studio version while driving home last night in my truck to see my Daughter. She is one week old. She was born December 1st and is My first child and My Gfs first as well. I'm 31 years old. I didn't think I was able to have kids by this point. And i was Given the most beautiful sweet thing I have ever seen in my life. I was half way home and I don't know why but I just started tearing up as the song played. I missed my Isabella so bad all day yesterday while I worked out on the farms. I got home to see my little chunky monkey losing her little umbilical chord stub. A milestone
Sir thank you so much for this little peak into your life. It’s so bare and real, you put a little bit of beauty on my heart. Bless you and your new family, and know people out here love y’all
yes, it's why I listen to astral weeks and a few songs from it over and over again on the way to work, during street walks, it crosses from music over into wonder this stuff
My 23 year old grandson sent this to me this morning. Warmed my heart to know he loves Van's music as much as I all these many years later. Morrisons music will never become obsolete.
Peace, as an awkward free spirited teenager growing up on the southside of Chicago in the mid-80's living around the way, I used to listen to Van Morrison to calm my spirit. His music takes listeners to a place where the sun never sets, where talking is replaced by the sound of life which is captured in his music. I thank my Creator for allowing me to listen to Van the Man. His gift helped to ease my spirit. Peace & Blessings
+K.A Williams I too turn to Van Morrison in times of trouble, and his music helps to lift my soul. The way you describe that feeling is perfect. Peace to you, K.A :)
+K.A Williams Couldn't agree more. Blessings and Peace to you as well. Oh ya, I grew up on 25th and Pulaski in Chicago. My mom ran a breakfast/lunch place and we lived in the back. This was in the late 60's early 70's.
+K.A Williams Yes, Van takes me too away to a place you can't get to from here. I've been listening to his music since I ran across St. Dominic's Preview way back when. Probably listen to more of him than everybody else combined. Never grow weary of him.
@wgtow Disagree. The Astral Weeks album should be listened to in it's entirety. One of the best albums ever IMO. In my youth, you listened and appreciated every track, and radio of the day, played full albums. A different, better era of music.
It's strange, growing up in South Alabama had my first job as a lifegaurd, 16.. $400 paycheck every two weeks, Van's Greatest Hits (stole it out of my Mom's collection)... it never, never left my CD player for three months straight. It was fucking magical.. Working man in my prime, cleaning windows.... Suga' Babe
When I was 18 I listened to so much Van the Man that I didn’t know where he ended & I began. I’d walk through the house growling & admonishing everyone to “Listen to the Lion.” My family thought I had lost my mind. But I had found my tribe.
“Hey it’s me I’m dynamite and I don’t know why…” lyrical mastery. I feel honored to be alive at the same time as some of the best songwriters of all time. If the planet lasted 1 million more years and still produced songwriters, none would ever be as good as the ones like Van Morrison
Gave me chills, and I've heard the song about a thousand times before. But this version, well, I just close my eyes and let Van the Man take me wherever he's going. It's always someplace sweet.
+Naomi Kenan Isn't it it just amazing how one can never get too much of this man's music. Some of his songs I have listened to literally hundreds of times, but almost every time remains like the first. I came to him via a record club purchase (dates me doesn't it), "St. Dominic's Preview," when I was about thirteen years old. Shortly thereafter I heard the Bang Sessions version of "Madame George" (off T.B. Sheets) and haven't been the same since. His expressionistic vocalizations still give me goose bumps.
+Cankuwicasa That's a hard one! "Sweet Thing" is in the top 5, but I've got to think about this one. Deserves a listen to my massive collection; that is not a hardship. But my favorite CD is the lesser know Veeden Fleece, which takes me to those misty, mossy, green hills of Ireland that seem to keep rolling right into heaven. That's some feat, considering I've never been there! (It's on my bucket list.) How about you? Oh, and I'll never forget the first time I heard TB Sheets... Van channels some of the greatest writers in that one, like Baudelaire. Okay, I'm getting into an area I don't know much about so I'll shut up. I love Van Morrison.
+Naomi Kenan My current favorite is "In the Back Room" (Bang Masters). As I grow older and more nuanced in my sensibilities my favorites tend to shift, though in all truthfulness picking s single favorite is a hopeless endeavor. Hard to beat "On Hyndford Street" or "Take Me Back" (both from "Hymns to the Silence") for melancholy emotiveness. Hyndford Street is especially representative of Van's poetic expressiveness. As concerns "Veeden Fleece," I'd have to say I most like "Bulbs." Interestingly, the album has garnered widely disparate reviews. Some say it was basically hippie muzak, while others have termed it "majestic." It's certainly not his most energetic effort, but it does demonstrate lyrical acumen. I also like "Linden Arden Stole the Highlights," though like Van, I haven't the foggiest what it's about.
Can't listen to this without bawling. I lost my dear friend and I hope that she will not remember that she ever felt the pain, that we will walk and talk in gardens all misty wet with rain. She was the sweetest thing 💔 I miss you so so so so so much Annie
Astral Weeks is a great work of art. Listening to it takes me to places i never knew existed. It should be played in school to give each generation a much better education
Van Morrison is everything that all these new Indie Folk/rock guys WISH that they could be!! Truly in a class by himself and so far ahead of his time.. or should I say timeless
Such a BEAUTIFULLY SENSITIVE PERFORMANCE OF A WONDERFUL, ORIGINALLY BRILLIANT SONG BY THE ALWAYS SUPREME AND FOREVERMORE GREAT, VAN MORRISON absolutely LOVELY!----- LOVE ❤️ Evelyn O' Connor
This album gave me this thought: Good music evokes in you an emotion you can name. Great music evokes in you an emotion you can't name. Astral Weeks is great music.
i have a long distance relationship. whenever i feel like losing the battle to the gods of longing, i listen to this song and then my love goes back to where it belongs: to the house of faith.
The peak of music for us humans has come and gone. But I am glad the we have these recordings so that people like me who weren't around or weren't aware at the time can find these absolute gems.
WOW WOW WOW From a mad keen 73yo Aussie fan. Had the pleasure of listening to Van for at least 45 years & he still sounds fantastic. Definetley one of the world's best vocalists / musicians of all time & his music will live on forever.
Van, what can I say about this man? Once, a woman that I loved sent me the link to "Brand New Day." I replied, "I love know this song. I love this song." she replied, "I knew you would." She knew me. She still knows me. Though time hasn't been too gracious to us. But Van will always take me back to her. This man is a genius who knew his purpose and walked/is walking his path extremely well. You can only thank the creator for allowing us to express all that it is through this man and his guitar.
...and I shall walk and talk in gardens misty wet with rain, I will be your sweet thing baby! Ahh this song still gives me hope in Love and Goosebumps all at the same time! I shall never grow so old again! I want to be his sweet thing!
Some people complain about my favorite Celtic 1 cousin, I have never complained about Van because I can find a not reason to do that. Van is a walking, talking, healing, advising living messenger saint with many cures for all kinds of ills of the human mind and troubled souls but Van doesn't know this and don't you tell him that, do not trouble Van about this as he's carrying a heavy load and he is doing his best to help us, Now who said Van was grumpy and moody, those people should not talk so loud, leave my cousin all along and he will keep doing what very few others have done in music before.
I have tried my very best to seek out as many live versions of this song as possible, and I’m pretty damn sure this is the absolute best one out there.
Why I remember this song and it’s truly a classic it will stop you in your tracks. That’s happened to me while shopping at Walmart I heard it faintly and it brought back great memories from my youth Van Morrison is one talented musician. Thank you for taking me on a great journey from my youth.
Having just seen Alexandre Rockwell's wondrous new movie Sweet Thing, I now know which version of this song the director used to such miraculous emotional effect. Anyone who loves Sir Van should see it.
Van is such an underrated musician. He has a weird ability that gives you so much peace, so much happiness and sadness at the same time. He is at same level as Bob Dylan, George Harrison and just a few more.
I want to tell myself that the studio version of this song is better because of the instrumentation, but I just can't confidently say that that's the case. The tempo he plays this version at is just so much more beautiful to me. Usually when people play live they speed up. Some songs just sound better a lot slower and this one is one of them to me. This is just kind of a vamping, repetitive, soul searching type of song. It just hits different when you're allowed to reflect at a much slower pace where you can kinda process the feeling.
I was just a kid from San Jose, CA when I first heard Astral Weeks vinyl, 1972 or so. It seemed like such a strange name for an album at the time but I was obsessed with the stream of consciousness words and music in it. Rushed out, bought it with scarce funds, I hated Jefferson Airplane, Doors. Thanks for the music, Van. You and Jesus saved me.

@wgtow Mix tapes are basically K Tel creations by individuals.
@wgtow Showing my age. K Tel was a company that sold albums made up of the top hits of the day by different artists. Sort of like a vinyl mix tape.
