I made a roll neck sweater out of some sweatshirt fabric with zero stretch in it......first time I tried it on I felt like I was being born again! Haven’t worn it, can’t get my head in it!

Finish the blouse and wear it under a jacket or cardigan. No one will ever know the birds are flying upside down on the back.

Heartland Knits: Yes, I was going to suggest the same thing. Especially since it is sleeveless, I would probably have worn a cardigan with it anyway. Sheona, please finish it, the fabric is beautiful!

If you take the back off and replace with a solid fabric? Save the upside down fabric for a collar or pockets on another blouse...just put them right side up 😉

Whenever I have a massive failure, especially one on which I spent a bunch of money, I remind myself it’s like paying for tuition and supplies at school. You may not always get a finished garment you love, but you learn a lesson you won’t soon forget.

First, let me say a big thank you Sheona for sharing your mistakes! I am a beginner and make horrendous mistakes ALL the time, far too many to go on about here, although I will tell you the worst. I am not at the stage where I am able to alter patterns to fit, so my technique is to make up the closest fit and make alterations to the finished garment. Each time, I have necklines that are far too big, shoulders that make it look as though it should be a drop shoulder - you get the picture - well, I tried to 'take in' the shoulder width on a top once, and I swear, I don't know how I did it . . . I managed to sew the top of the sleeve closed!! I have also stitched a left sleeve into a right armhole and wondered why I had to 'wrestle' it to fit! LOL A big thumbs up from me and a subscribe for 'keeping it real'. TFS xx

I am almost finished going through my stack of of uh-ohs which had been building up for a few years. I fixed nine and now I wear them! The others I either took apart to re-use the fabric or donated the finished garments. I only have 2 left to figure out. It’s immensely satisfying.

I had this vision of a hoodie in red with some leather accents. I decided I wanted more than just the sleeves in leather. So I decided to add this triangle color blocking across the top. I showed my husband and he asked if I was making a Halloween costume going as Star trek. 😂 It's gone in the bin. I can't unsee it. 🤣

Thanks for sharing your mistakes, it does help people understand that the mistakes are an important part of sewing. I have been sewing now for a good 60 yrs and my mistakes are still rolling out. The latest was a pull on sleeveless blouse pattern sort of a tank style to be constructed in a light weight woven fabric in which the front needs to be cut out on the bias so the neck area would drape in a lovely way. So I dug into my stash and found a pretty light weight polyester, cut it all out, constructed it but when I tried it on instead of the front draping it gaped forward and gave the impression I was a turtle poking her head out from a surrounding shell. I never checked the drape on the bias for this fabric prior to constructing it. Total fail. Besides learning that checking the drape is important I also learned how to cut out a large pattern piece on the bias in slippery fabric, not easy but I will give this another go. Even though the fabric is noted to be for a woven it would work better in a slinky knit so that will be the next choice, in fact had I thought a bit a knit would have been the obvious choice. Then there were all the slices I made in fabrics when learning how to handle the curves with a serger, totally missing the obvious solution that I could disable the cutting knife and simply hand cut the salvages after sewing curves. Living fully means embracing learning at all ages and a good sense of humor serves us well in all things.I love the Clair coat and it is quite attractive on you. It may not look like what you had imagined but having never seen it before I can say it is lovely. A lighter weight cold weather coat is quite useful when you want to go shopping or do anything that involves going in and out of buildings and going in and out of the heated car. Wearing a bulky coat just gets in the way when every time you go inside you get steamy hot and need to pull it off. I am in the process of constructing a lighter weight winter coat.

I think I might take the back off of the blouse, replace it with navy blue solid piece. Turn the upside down bird panel right side up, make something else from it. Maybe some bias for the armholes and hem of the navy side. You could even add navy to the back side of the ties. It would make them a little more sturdy increasing your styling options and adds a bold splash to the from without distracting from the upright birdies. You could make a little navy blue wristlet zipper pouch and use the left over birdies as a liner.

Thanks for this! So often I think because we always just want to show our best side it’s easy to look at someone else’s Instagram, blog or vlog and think they never make anything less than fabulous. It’s easy to start to feel that sense of “what’s wrong with me? Why don’t my projects always turn out” Thanks for showing the true side of sewing, where fabric choices or pattern placement or style every now and again, despite best intentions, go rogue. :)

Hi there! i'm so used to make mistakes that I learned to create ways to fix them. The other day I started to cut the back of a blouse for the sleeves... and ended turning the blouse in an open back for my daugther... I think you should finish the first dress, turning into a blouse or tunic! And, definitely make a loose cardigan out of the coat, with unfinished look, very modern! Good to know i'm not the only one that makes mistakes!!!!

Thank you for another great video Sheona! As you say "sewing mistakes" are truly all a part of our learning process. We are bound to make them! But usually just once :) I think you've highlighted the most common ones - fabric choice, fit and pattern placement are probably among the top three that can derail you seriously from ever wearing a garment you've put extensive resources into creating.

An interesting video Sheona. I think we make mistakes when we have a blind spot. I cut out a top with all the pineapples upside down but I have worn it. I didn’t Eve notice until my husband asked me if they were fish.😆The other disasters I’ve had are usually trousers. I do hate wasting nice fabric too. I also don’t trust that I’m cutting it out big enough especially on Big 4 patterns when I have to ignore the sizes and look at the ease they are allowing. I do look at styles very carefully but have come out of my comfort zone which is a risk if you are not sure about the style. I’m not keen on the two Betty dresses I made with the full circle skirts. I’m wondering if I can take them apart and redraft the skirts but they are waiting. I have worn them but I don’t pick them out very often. With the sweatshirt could you cut off the arms, and put a frill back on. I’ve just got a pattern like that in Sew Now mag McCall’s 7721. 💕😘

My classic oopsie......early days of sewing- very proud to make a blouse with French seams that came together really well. Did my first buttonholes - they were straight and lined up well. Then used a seam ripper to cut the buttonholes - and slipped......yup.....created a big rip all the way down the front!!!

Am a new subscriber and totally enjoy your vlogs. I make a lot of mistakes when I'm sewing, one big mistake was ambitiously making a bomber jacket (my first ever) from boucle fabric - I cut the sleeves too tight. I did manage to fix them by adding a piece and making them look like tailored sleeves. The jacket turned out to be amazing, so I made another....and guess what mistake I made in the second jacket! Yep, tight sleeves, again, because I had forgotten to alter the pattern. The second jacket isn't finished yet, I might summon some courage and find a way to fix it after watching this. XX

Thank you Sheona for being so honest! Experienced sewers make mistakes too, we just never stop learning I suppose. I recently made the Ogden cami from a PDF without looking at the instructions on my iPad, after all how complicated can a cami I be? Cut out and made up the size 18, then realized it was an American pattern and sizing and was huge on me. Fortunately it fitted my eldest daughter! ❤️ your videos and I lived in Wokingham when I was a teenager, so I always make a point of watching you even though I am now the other side of the world!

Hi Sheona, yes I have made mistakes sewing, I made a front split maxi dress & I sewed the bodice on backwards to the skirt, so you could see the shoulder seams, and the arm holes was two different sizes too big! I was so up set, I couldn’t undo it ,because it was stitched so tight I was putting holes in the fabric. I just threw it away out of sight is out of mind & I felt better.

Dress 1:One possible amendment could be a white back and keep the front. Otherwise choose a back fabric recalling one of the dominant color of the front part and replace the neck piece with same fabric. You can also use to finish the arm whole as well. In other words mix it well.

You have taught me something really worthwhile.....I fall for the style trends and like your idea of asking myself would I buy that from a store? Good advice, it really was like turning on a light bulb. Thanks. I have a hard time getting rid of fails when the fabric is expensive (and I love the grey Atelier and your coat), so here's a suggestion. When you take off the ruffles, you probably can use it for a bottom band. I have learned not to buy patterns with a kimono type sleeve. Just too much fabric under the arm even with the correct size. Like the idea of turning the coat into a cardi but also occurred to me, to make a whole additional body and turn it into a reversible coat. Lucky enough that my local High School sewing class accepts even small pieces of fabric for students to create with. So can avoid the guilt of just throwing away my disasters (and even after decades of sewing, they happen).

I bought some beautiful maroon fleece backed jersey to make my first Linden sweatshirt. I was quite new at sewing jersey, and was really flummoxed when I discovered that not only was the fabric only two way stretch, it came as a tube! I made it up, only to discover when I tried to put the cuffs and neckband on that I'd cut them the wrong way, and I couldn't get them to stretch to fit the opening. All was not lost, I had some ribbing so I used that, and luckily for me the lower band fitted. But as the entire garment was cut with the stretch going the wrong way it never looked right and I gave it to a charity shop. It's completely put me off making another Linden!

This was great. Most of the garments could be saved. If you really can't wear the bird print blouse as it is why not cut a plain blue back in the same fabric type. The by hand London dress wasn't your fault it was theirs.Keep the toile you've made and use it as a sleeveless garment. The blue colour is gorgeous on you.definitely make the alterations. With the coat ,choose your lining carefully and wear it as a waterfall open coat.ok the purple coat didn't work out but someone is wearing a coat that they wouldn't have been able to afford from a store and a charity benefit. Also you learned an important lesson which we have now learnt. What I love about sewing is you are the creator and you don't have to stick to what the pattern dictates. Also,I hope you didn't have to pay for the new by hand London pattern as it was their mistake. Really enjoyed this vlog.

Sizing, making a sample, cutting out fabric incorrectly - these errors are minor and sometimes can be sorted. But spending all the time and money to create a garment which does not suit - this is a tragedy. Because of my size it is quite difficult to decide whether a style suits. This is where I head for the shops and spend a morning trying on clothes. I try on skirts, pants, blouses, dresses, jackets. From 50 odd outfits I might find 5 which look good. I also use the occasion to check proportion and length. I use this tedious "in and out of clothes" event to then head to the fabric store for patterns and fabrics. Planning and research pays off. Making clothes for oneself is not a fast-food event; it should rather be viewed as a "slow cooking" movement, where quality and beauty is produced. I love your information - you are very sensible and giving.

Lovely video that made me chuckle! I also have a tendency to cut things out far too big. I have two Linden sweatshirts that are ridiculously big for me. Doing it once, ok, but twice?? My other repeat error is attaching snaps wrongly. The very final step in the garment making and I have put the snaps on the wrong way round more than once 🤦‍♀️. I have a pull over the head type blouse from a year ago, with a voluminous ruched scarf like “collar” that ties to the side, great to wear with round neck jackets I wear for work. Made in a viscose it’s drapey and I thought lightweight enough. But no, the collar is too heavy and doesn’t work, the blouse opening is short and at the front raglan seam, so the weight makes it gape open. While watching I had a lightbulb moment, just remove the collar!, there’s lots of fabric in it and make a different neckline, sew up the raglan, maybe insert a zip into the sideseam if needs be. Why has it taken me so long to think of that? I just needed your video. I’ve learned the pattern is fine but that I didn’t realise the fabric is so key for that feature although fine for the bodice itself. Lesson learned. Thank you!

Unpick the birds blouse (or give it to someone to unpick) and make into a glorious Ogden Cami ... Heck, I'll unpick it for you over one of the glorious cocoa drinks down in the cafe next to your shop. :-) (And, yes, that's a real offer.)

Thank you so much for sharing your mistakes with us. I am new to dressmaking and absolutely loved your tip about making a fabric swatch book - an excellent idea. I am really struggling with the different types of fabric and feel that your suggestion will really help. I am off to the Festival of Quilts on Sunday - dangerous. Enjoy your holiday in France and I look forward to your next video.

I recently found a dress, cut out of a beautiful Swill cotton, complete with tailor's tacks and interfacing, that I never put together. It's about 40 years old now and at the time I just cut out a size 38 pattern without looking at whether or not it would fit my D-cup chest - and this dress didn't. Now I know more about pattern fitting but I still have several unfinished jackets that I hoped would fit but didn't. I'm a slow learner, apparently.

I love this! I really felt for you with the coat fabric and I’m glad you brought this to my attention for when I embark on my first one as I hadn’t considered the weight... just the price of wool! I really struggled to see the upside down birds, I’d carry on with it and use it as a comedy talking point 😂 so lovely of you to share these as it’s easy to fall for the Instagram perfection 😘😘

What a brave vlog! We all have these mistakes - but usually hide them! Love the Clare pattern and the colour is amazing - what about using an interlining to make it a heavier weight? I know it would take time, but it’s such a shame to waste that beautiful wool

The birds material is beautiful! Might I suggest you finish it, and then wear that shirt with a neutral cardigan that covers the back? Thank you for sharing your fails. I have the most trouble with neck bands!

My seam ripper/un-picker is my favorite tool. It is rare that I don't use it for EVERY make. I figure it's just part of sewing. The last coat I made had a lining and inner lining and I had to unpick every piece at least once :-(

Thank you Sheona for sharing your learning fails. I too am a bit large in the upper portion of my body and usually make the largest or 2nd to make a garment. But I have finally learned that is not always the case and have actually made several tops now that fit!! 😆 There really is lots to learn while sewing and I look forward to my next project hopefully it to will be a success. I love Willy Wonka, but I don't blame you for donating that one, not many could pull off that look😉

This was a brilliant video with great advice in it. It really is true that you learn by your mistakes and I must have learnt a lot over the years! Really laughed at your description of the "elephant skin." I like the coat though and think you might be pleased if you finish it as a coatigan - it's not what you intended but it's a beautiful colour and could be a useful cuddly layer.

I've been sewing over 40 years and I still make stupid mistakes OFTEN! However, every mistake is a learning opportunity, learn from it and move on.
    My tips -
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS make a toile of a new to me pattern.
If you are making a fitted woven dress on the first toile you MUST put in at least one sleeve in - I usually put in one sleeve and cut the seam allowances off the other side.
Finally remember, occasionally, it's not you it IS the pattern that is incorrect or badly drafted.

You really cannot tell the birds are upside down, they blend into the pattern. If you really don't like it, get a similar weight fabric in one of the colors in the shirt and make a color block back. That way you can wear that beautiful shirt. I am constantly making things that are too big, especially in my knitting. You could recut the neck on your coat and make it a lovely spring coat. It is lovely fabric.

Hi new sub here. I haven’t sewn clothes yet but I’m thinking about it. I’ve never had any lessons but I have made fully lined curtains, cushions with zips and have altered clothes. Anyway, it’s interesting that experienced people still make mistakes. It’s scary and refreshing at the same time. When I was pregnant with my oldest son I made 4 curtains with flowers. I fully lined them and they looked great until I once realised when I was admiring them that only one of them had the flowers the right way up. I cried my eyes out (I blame my pregnancy hormones) but I got on with it and made a 5th curtain with the flowers going down. The curtain that was ok was then lined with thicker lining and used on our front door. I blamed the fiasco on my pregnancy brain and inexperience but it didn’t put me off sewing more things. I now know to check the flowers are the right way up. I just need to bite the bullet and start making clothes 😊

Hi Noelia, I did the same while pregnant - made curtains for a sunroom/baby room with one of those 70's brown/orange patterns and once they hung I saw one of the panels was upside down. I never changed it though. Didn't have the money to buy more material.

Hi Sheona, omg weve all had the disasters. I made the Clare coat around the same time as you and didnt reflect the arm pieces when cutting out (was cutting on a single layer) so the coat was basically not wearable. The fabric was expensive and its still sat in a pile of makes that were never finished. Im not actually sure this coat wouldnt make my fuller figure look even bigger anyway!!

Always good to see, that others have the same problems 😜 To the Pussy Bow Blouse: have you thought to unpick the blouse and replace the back with e.g. a solid cream fabric? You can use the rest of the back fabric for pocket linings or something like that. That blouse is so nice, that you should not, not wear it!

Hey Sheona - i love this video. Thanks so much for sharing your sewing mistakes. My standard sewing mistake is not putting the right seam allowance on the pattern pieces. In germany they are not included so i do clever pattern tetris on one day and the next day i've forgotten all my plans 😁😁😁 Another one is not grading between sizes even if i know better, but hey: it's learning by doing 🍀

For the second dress. If the fitting was so good without the sleeves, then you could finish this dress sleeveless and add a short bolero made of the same fabric.

Thanks for sharing Sheena - you have given me a laugh and brought back memories of my own stupid mistakes - usually made when I carry on too long and am tired! Why don’t you put some flutter sleeves like the SOI Eve dress on the calico mistake? They would give you more room to move. I couldn’t see the upside down birds so just wear it under a jacket or as someone else suggested do another colour on the back. I made a vintage tea dress with full circle skirt in a lovely fabric and I’ve only worn it once as the full circle makes me look frumpy!

I still do some really silly fails as well, I put a lining in wrong on the zipper tape & therefore it showed (you can see if you like to watch my new channel, you got me in stitches) Thanku for sharing. To be honest with the birds I didn’t notice even when you pointed it out. It’s a shame to let it languish, could you wear a cardi with it? I really doubt anyone will look that closely at your back. I’ve had a few fails, normally because I rush and can’t be bothered to toile or do things properly. I made a darling ranges dress and thought it was massive so took it in loads, but forgot it had back ties so now it’s too small :( and I recently made a Jessica dress in a lovely fabric, fitted it and took it in at the sides forgetting I’d need a 1cm seam allowance for the lining and so now it won’t do up. Luckily I’m losing weight so hopefully next summer it will fit 🤞
