Fantastic video. Question, how do you decrease the speed or velocity of the embers floating up? For example, working on a video where I'm using the sparks but I don't want them to rise as fast. Thanks!
Hi @neverinruin5835. Many thanks for commenting. You can make the particles rise up at a slower rate by reducing the values for Velocity under Controls for the pEmitter node (as shown at 2.00 in this tutorial), and/or the Y Strength variable for pTurbulence (shown at 5.43). I'd say that the change to the Velocity property would have a more appropriate effect as the Y Strength property could also force particles to move downwards as well as up like in a whirlwind. Hope that helps.
Awesome tutorial. Just one issue - I've tried this myself but the particles show up as lines instead of small dots, is there anywhere I can change that?
How do I set it to flow from right side of the screen so the sparks can fly to the left side of the screen? And can I add a transport background to it to lay it over my anime?
Hi @wosartstudios9907. In Fusion, for the pEmitter node, under Controls and Velocity, set Angle to -180 so that the particles flow towards the left. When setting the line coordinates as shown at 4.43 of this tutorial, set the following values under Region: START Start X Offset = 0.6 Start Y Offset = 0.3 END Start X Offset = 0.6 Start Y Offset = - 0.3 By default, the video clip will be transparent but only in DaVinci Resolve. You can export the clip in the Delivery window with transparency around the actual clip by selecting Single Clip, QuickTime, GoPro CineForm, RGB 16-bit and having Export Alpha ticked but the transparency will only be present in other DaVinci Resolve projects. I've not found a way to maintain this outside of the software, sorry. Hope that this helps.
@@C0ntiChannel thanks. It delivered it on top of my scene and it came out transparent. It worked out. It's rare to find videos on compositing anime style animations with devinci and it's the perfect program for us freelancers. Thanks
*Awesomeness C0nti!!!🎵🎵🎵* How much do you think I will use this effect??? TONS!!!! Very nicely done my friend. Hope you are having a *Funday😀Sunday!❤🎸🎹🎺🌹*
Hi @IcloneFun. I can imagine all of your wonderful characters having marshmellows around a bonfire together! This one was exhausting but it was definitely part of a Funday Sunday, thanks! Hope that you are well.
Hi @Lintrio. Many thanks for your comment. If you've already rendered your clip, you can insert this into another DaVinci Resolve project and then open this clip in Fusion. With MediaIn1 selected, hold SHIFT and press SPACE to insert a DeltaKeyer tool. In Inspector for this tool, click on the colour box next to Reference, hold your mouse button down and drag your cursor to the black that appears on your preview screen; this should disappear leaving a chequered background so that you can place your fire sparks clip in front of another video or image on a track below. Hope that helps.
Hi @Demon Tha Don. Aside from adjusting the particle colour (shown at 3.20 in the tutorial), these are some other techniques that you could experiment with: a) Use a lower value for the ellipse Soft Edge property (shown at 1.00) b) Make a slight increase to the particle lifespan value so that these don't disappear as quickly (1.50) c) Use a higher value for Fade Out (4.25) d) Reduce the Glow Size value so that the glow doesn't spread out as far and thinly (6.30) Avoid increasing the actual glow value too much as this may become too vibrant. Hope that helps.
This is a really good tutorial, but I’m having issues. I did everything right, and it’s not showing up at all I also noticed that the Merge1 and MediaOut1 turn red, but not for me. What am I doing wrong? Edit: I think I fixed it, but now the frame rate dropped to 1 sec, how do I fix this?
Hi @enderb0y08. Thank you for the comment. Have you checked please what the playback is like for your rendered video? Sometimes my media files play slow in DaVinci Resolve itself but then they play smoothly as a rendered MP4 file outside of the software. If you modified the frame rate manually, could I ask please how you did this?
Hi 👋, I didn’t modify anything when creating the overlay, followed everything down to the last detail. Turns out that Davinci was slowing down while using/making the overlay & video, I also rendered it into a MP4 and turned out really smooth, which was a relief cause I worked in this for almost an entire day. @@C0ntiChannel
Great to hear that your final video is running smoothly, @enderb0y08. I have the same issues sometimes with playback in the actual software and so I have to render the video in order to get a nice-flowing preview.
I had the same problem. No output in Merge1 but I had sparks in Glow1. Then I followed the rest of the video and added the output of pRender2 to the black background to Merge1 background input (the yellow input) and all was fine ;-) Great video and channel!!!

This might legit be the most useful tutorial I have ever watched. Thank you so much for making this video, great work!
Thank you so much for your kind words, @Kamalium. You're very welcome.
No bullshit, no waffle. Absolutely incredible video! I was even able to work with you in the background and still keep up! Definitely earned a sub!
You're very welcome, @saajuenter. I subscribed to you to support your channel also. Best wishes.
Could not come at a more opportune time. Thank you!
You're very welcome, @Reel Hawks Studio. I've been meaning to do this for a while and I'm glad to finally get this published. Hope that it helps you.

I've been looking for this effect forever, thanks. I'll definitely have to play with it a lot.

How do you make the effect brighter and more visible in daytime footage?

Can I import mov or h.264 footage into davinci resolve?
Hi @Writer29. You can import both but the playback and overall software performance when editing h.264 or h.265 footage can be quite tedious.
