    On the interview they did, Soyeon said for Allergy was based on her past experience being criticized for not being pretty enough to be an idol. Queencard is a fun song based on the 2018 movie I feel pretty. It is meant to be a fun song that isnt to be take seriously but with a deep message about self love and body positivity. They are so real for these songs.

    I'm almost 100% sure this concept is based off the confidence she had to discover for herself on her looks as she used to think she was ugly cause as a teenager people constantly told her she was. So her utilizing her genius and creating this concept and these two songs she wrote and produced, she's successfully created a song about girls being confident in themselves and their sexuality, without actually sexualizing themselves. How can one be such a genius!?

      Definitely. I was recently rewatching produce101 and my god... Soyeon literally had to apologise for her 'visuals' like????? I was gagged, i really don't understand it

    It definitely helps make it come off much more genuine when one member is essentially their chief producer and creative director. And Minnie/Yuqi seem to be involved in the music as well since I often see their names on the tracklist credits. It was so interesting when Soyeon appeared on the variety show I Live Alone. She showed her pitching a comeback concept at a meeting and her little producing room she has in her home. Lol her episode showed off the quirkiness that seems to explain why she is such a creative genius

    I am right there with you on the idea that when something feels thoughtful and artistic it matters less if the songs are your vibe or not. Allergy was giving me vibes of 2ne1's Ugly

    • @amorfatikhb
      @amorfatikhb ปีที่แล้ว +4

      oh my god, right!? i immediately thought of 2ne1’s ugly and got hit with major nostalgia, more than the whole y2k concept since that was kinda before my time. or maybe location.

    • @e_guy7931
      @e_guy7931 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amorfatikhb No idea if this will make sense but the y2k concept makes me feel old but the 2ne1 connection made me feel young again lol Can't believe it is already a throwback to that time but the songs instantly bring me back to feeling great about it

    they pronounce queencard like 'queenka' because in korean its a term used to describe someone as a queen bee which i find pretty cool ^^ the play on words is super fun

    I'm lucky enough that the songs are the types of songs I love as well as the girls being truly artistic and personal and all. This is my favourite comeback from them, their message and quirks are great and while I know this music isn't for everyone, I love it as well! You hit it right on the money when you mentioned them being true artists.

    Allergy reminds me of early 2000s movie soundtrack songs which I def think they were going for considering the concept and references (would fit into Legally Blonde for sure imo ❤ and yeah I caught the White Chicks reference too. Idk if its the lights or the set, but theres no way its not😭) I saw a video from years ago of Soyeon saying she knows she's ugly and she can't change it💔 and this is def her saying she found herself and knows she's gorgeous. Queencard might have to grow on me, but I love the message and the unseriousness of it lmao . They're really bringing attention to and trying to disband societal expectation and what an idol (or anybody) "should" look like instead of ignoring it like most of every entertainment industry ever.
    (Also, random but I thought it was cute that when Yuqi said Ariana they held their hair up like a ponytail😭)

    "I never Die" is their full album from last year and it slays. "Tomboy" is the title track with full MV. "My Bag" (choreography practice) is a b-side with video. "Never stop me" (live clip) is another b-side video from that album. For the remaining songs you can find lyric videos.

    Yesss this was such a fun reaction!!! This is why I love G Idle!!! The artistry! Even if the song isn't my fav the mvs are so good I end up liking it just bc I wanna watch the mv again like Nude! Allergy isn't my fav but it's growing on me but Queencard is my shit!!!!

    allergy hits me more than queencard did tbh i like the guitar - for queencard, i feel bad whenever i have to make myself listen to smth over and over to like it out of exposure bc music should be fun (like i shouldn’t have to make myself like it just bc they’re my fave group). but watching this reaction, i felt like queencard was more fun. like now i can imagine this performed at a concert and it just being a party.

    I feel like Allergy was meant to sound like the typical Y2K teen girl movie music cuz of all of the references. It seemed more about the messaging rather than being anything too special sonically

    It took me days, but I finally figured it out. Soyeons dilema: How do I make a fun, silly, and dumb song that is totally off brand for (G)I-dle? Answer: Set the song in campy Y2k movie universe then say it was all a dream. Tons of pop culture references in both videos. Allergy sets us up with our Y2K movie universe theme using the common Y2K trope of ugly girl (actually pretty girl with glasses, mussed hair, and baggy clothes) wishes she was pretty and popular like the other girls. She tries and fails a couple times but eventually she takes off her glasses and fixes her hair and gets cool clothes and becomes a popular/pretty girl. Then she learns that being pretty and popular isn't so great after all, so she goes back to being a normal girl but now, after seeing that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side, she is happy just being herself. The end. In "Allergy" the answer is plastic surgery instead of removing glass, ect... At the end of "Allergy" we see Soyeon about to go under anesthesia for her procedures that will make her pretty and popular.
    In "Queencard", we pick up at the point where the doctors are applying the anesthesia. Now we're in a drug induced dream world where Soyeon is living the life of a popular/pretty girl. The lyric "I'm a quinka" repeats over and over. ("Quinka" or Queenca" is Korean slang from Y2K meaning "popular girl" or "it girl") In her dream, Soyeon is a "Queenca". Her English lyrics that were actually pretty good in "Allergy" are now all drunken and comically bad (I mean, they are purposefully bad). The scenes are chaotic and wild, they rewind, backgrounds are blurry, they intermix the doctors who are standing around her as doing dance moves, the group members faces change into other members. We see more tropey Y2K movie scenes. Girl looks hot with wet hair as she emerges from the swimming pool. Dance battle at the club. All campy movie tropes. Finally, in the ending chorus of the song, the group is dancing in the hospital (reality is getting closer to her as she regains consciousness). The lyrics "Wearing whatever girl - Queencard", "Thick or thin girl - Queencard", "Full of confidence girl - Queencard". We see Miyeon leaning over her as she wakes up telling her (paraphrasing) "this is what it means to be a Queencard". Soyeon pops awake before the plastic surgery and leaves the hospital. She is now confident that she is a "Queenca" and we can see it in the way she walks, holds her shoulders back, and the expression on her face. (great acting by the way to go from frumpy and unconfident to beautiful and confident without changing anything about her make-up or clothes). This was the common Y2K movie trope of "it was all just a dream". but then we get another trope from those times when Soyeon starts getting likes and follows on an insta photo that seems to be from the dream. it's the "it was all just a dream - or was it?!?!" trope that was pretty common in Y2K movies also. So, Soyeon got to have her fun, silly, dumb bop without it changing the groups brand... or did it?!?!? Pure genius.

    Allergy reminds me of a mesh between B1A4's - OK and 2ne1's - Ugly (I think I'm ugly and nobody wants to love me just like her I wanna be pretty I wanna be pretty~)
    Honestly my inner teen is screaming since I grew up on Paramore, MCR, Boys Like Girls, We the kings etc.. whewww I was a "Warped Tour" junkee too 🤭🥲🥲, I'm here for this pop rock & alt rock Era returning tbh.
    That line in allergy about how teens now a days seem more mature than "me" who's the actual adult.. girl.. yes 😭😭😭😫😫😫.
    Also I said the same thing about queen card. Very much sounds like it's fresh off the back of TOMBOY

    i started stanning gidle when nxde came out, so im fairly new to their fandom. its so interesting to see how older fans react. hann and hwaa and their other songs similar are actually not my favorite (i do love lion and omg though) but i LOVE tomboy and nxde. fans who loved hwaa and hann hated queencard. queencard wasnt my favorite at first but after listening to it a bajillion million times its just so FUN. the lyrics are cringe on purpose and its FUN! I LOVE BEING CRINGE!!! i am cringe and i am free. i also feel that allergy and queencard are going against the girl crush concepts that are common today with how bright and pink they are. and although queencard is a fun song with pretty nonsensical lyrics (ON PURPOSE, might i add again, soyeon did that on purpose) they still have their wonderfully deep meanings (loving yourself no matter what, every person is beautiful in their own right as long as youre confident-- Ariana and kim Kardashian are both pretty in their own respective ways-- and the fact that the korean lyrics form a queen chess piece when centered. so good!
    absolutely the song doesn't have to be for everyone, but its beautifully done. its a lot to tell soyeon to "put down the pen" when she made the entire concept, outfits, production of the song, AND also the lyrics that they claim are bad when she made them cringey and fun on purpose.

    Queen card won't get out of my head lol
    For me it's Stray Kids and I-dle when it comes to Kpop...and maybe it's those 2 groups because of the members involvement in the song creation that feels more genuine and I can feel that come across in their songs...whatever it is both are great groups!

    Soyeon is so Beautiful, but she is not considered beautiful in Korea, when she was in producer she receive a lot of criticism for not being pretty (and that’s beyond ridiculous in my opinion) but those comments did get her cause she did plastic surgery before her Debut, and I feel that if someone wanna do PS to feel good is totally okay, what I’m getting from this is that maybe we should do it for our selfs not to fit any toxic standards.

    Was... that hype boy line shade?? 🤔 Idk but I agree w you fully on the representation etc. As a black human, its nice to see us esp in a genre that borrows so heavily from us as a cultural reference. I was just fighting for my life in a discord recently about the same thing. Oof.
    Also, I agree w the artist take, as I am a singer/writer when no one's looking lol.
