As a straight dude who watched this movie as a kid back when it came out and thought it was hilarious and still thinks so, I'd say that you're better off losing any guy who unsubscribes from your channel because you watched this movie and they can't deal with the fact that people who aren't straight exist.

Moment Ashleigh said that, i said to myself... 'why would i unsub?'. As a straight guy too, who grew up in a pretty conservative household, whos got no problem watching and finds greatly entertaining, a movie like this and has seen other movies in the same vane, good riddance to anyone that stuck up about what someone else gets up to in their private lives.
I look at it as you can disagree with a persons life style and a person has every right to do so and hold such an opinion (and being totally honest, some of the actions and attitudes of the LGBTQ community rankles me a little sometimes)...
BUT, and its a big but, you dont and shouldn't be allowed to hate a person for that life style... unfortunately, that hates back on the rise again, and real people like Gene Hackmans character are seriously getting to much press and power now days, and in the real world there isnt really a happy ending in this sort of thing.
If anything LGBT ever ruffles a person that badly, then the problem might not be with the LGBT... though good luck getting any real bigot to have some self reflection.

As a queer man, this movie is still hilarious and has held up well after almost 30 years. Terrific casting choices with Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Hank Azaria,. This movie also holds a special place in my heart for a different reason. My grandmother loved comedies. I took her to see this in the theater in 1996, and was the last movie she went to before she passed away. I just remember her laughing hysterically throughout the movie.
I watched this with my grandma as well and she thought it was just hilarious. May both their memories be a blessing.
The movie is based on a French play called "La Cage aux Folles". Robin Williams just kills it. He was such a versatile actor and not just a comedian. He was trained at Julliard in acting so he had a formal actor education.
This was probably the first movie I ever saw that portrayed a same-sex relationship in much the same way you would portray a hetero relationship; just 2 people who love eachother
As someone who grew up in a conservative household, I think this movie kinda helped me realize that there was nothing particularly abnormal about a same-sex relationship. They go through the same hardships as any relationship really. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just pushing an agenda.
Same here, I was probably 15 or so when I saw it back when it came out, though I was aware it's a remake of an older movie I'd never seen, and it kind of blew my mind because it really brought into question in my head the dumbass usual conservative fear-mongering talking point about gay parents and their children. The portrayal of Val as just a regular straight guy who happened to have two dads really made me re-think the usual "But Think About the Children" BS usually surrounding this topic, which in turn helped me re-think all the BS grown-ups had fed me all my life about gay people and realize it was just propaganda meant to demonize them.
This was actually the first R rated movie I remember seeing (That or Halloween, don't remember) when I was about 13 or so and it was probably a huge contributor to my never seeing these relationships as any different, being that it was my first exposure to the whole idea. I cannot fathom being hateful to gay folk and needing convincing, before the movie I'd just never thought about it. I think every young teen should watch this and have the same experience, it's a lovely film to get the idea across. :)
My first time seeing a same sex situation was Death Trap starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. I was 12 at the time, and I had questions for my father after we went to see this movie. :D

Robin Williams was so good, such a caring, funny, decent human being, he was like the funny uncle everybody knew and loved. You can tell that Nathan Lane is enjoying this character so much. And the great (and hugely underrated) Hank Azaria, he's been in so many movies, either as an actor or a voice actor, the man is so talented.
Jim Carrey and Robin Williams are the only comedians I like. They put all other comedians to shame

Totally agree. Straight as well, but my sister in law is lesbian, and she she is far more like family to me than my biological brother. And, I definitely love like she is my actual big sister. So, bottom line, one's sexual identity doesn't make you any less capable of being a loving caring and supportive human being, parent, and family member.
Been subscribed to this channel for months now, but have not been so proud of Ashleigh as I am now, for her wonderfully, progressive, open, and caring views and messaging.
"When you have talent..." The ironic thing is Hank Azaria's performance in this film could arguably be the most talented in this film. Of course, no one wants to admit it over Robin or Nathan. But, c'mon, he was Great!

This really shows what an amazing character actor Hank Azaria is. I love watching this movie, and then The Mystery Men, just to show how crazy the guy can be :)
The acting in this is incredible - emotionally, physically... Imagine a script that says, "walks across restaurant like a man who is walking like a woman, who is walking like John Wayne, and very badly." And he NAILS it. 00:13:15

Nathan Lane stole this movie! But Robin Williams is so brilliant! The scene when Robin slipped and got back up was real but he didn’t break out of character and continued, and “fuck the shrimp” was improv as well. Hahahaha. This movie is so funny and enjoyable. I loved learning that Robin took an accident and turned it into a brilliant ad lib. It’s always been my favorite scene. I laugh my head off every single time! 😂

As a 26 year old gay man. I really appreciated your choosing this movie. I really enjoyed watching it with you. I showed this to my mom a few years ago and she loved it which was really nice.
A couple of fun facts you might like to hear about the movie:
1. most of the scenes between Nathan Lane (Albert) and Robin Williams were improv. The scene where Robin Williams tries to coach Nathan Lane in the restaurant is completely improv. The director was laughing so hard during those takes that the sound guys actually had to put a blanket over top him so that his laughing wouldn't be picked up by the mics.
2. Nathan Lane is gay
Great share Brandon...love "The Birdcage," Robin and Nathan. And the great Gene Hackman - his drag scene was absolutely hilarious (when I watched this the first time, I nearly soiled myself with laughter). Happy Pride Month!

Not often do people actually get facts correct. Great job! I did read the director made them go according to the script first until he got an actual quality take the way it was written and then he let them go off to improv and ended up using a lot of the improv scenes.

I just realised that Nathan Lane doesn't get enough credit for this performance. To combine over-the-top queenishness with real, deep emotion is a difficult balancing act, but he pulls it off perfectly.
He’s genius in this.
Also, fun fact: iirc, after Birdcage premiered, Ophrah was "very curious" about how that one actor was able to play a gay man so well, and Robin Williams picked up on it and steered the interview in a different direction to cover his friend who wasn't out yet.
Never saw the interview so i have to ask; which actor? Nathan Lane?
When Nathan Lane was asked if he was gay: "I'm 45, single, and I work in musical theater. You do the math."
This made me search for "oprah birdcage" and I just watched the whole episode where the only guests were Robin and Nathan. There were definitely some uncomfortable questions being asked but any interview with Robin in it is thoroughly entertaining and this was no exception.
I hate that question, it's just so....gross. They don't seem to ask anymore, thank gods, but it's funny how they never ask a gay actor how they could *possibly* play a straight person.
Robin was and is, a national treasure.

Similar here, what I want was him to find out who he loves, because that is all that matters, but I grew up with the likes of Mr Humphries from "Are You Being Served" et al, where it was "effeminate==gay" and I didn't want my nephew being effeminate making society push him to choose a man "because you MUST be gay, right?". And what came out of my mouth was, hmmm, "unfortunate"?, I knew that the lead singer of Right Said Fred was gay, but very masculine, I knew effeminate men who were very VERY cishet men, and "Inception" had Tom Hardy playing a gay person where being gay was not on screen, merely "in his life" (remembering that this IS, after all, a screenplay), and I wanted him to decide, not society push him, but what I said could easily also be said "I want the gays back in the bottle", even though I knew what I MEANT was nothing at all like that.
My Godson is married to a trans (pre-op, still gave birth, with complications) man and so my godson has married a transmale. HE decided. Given I don't believe in God, I can't really get upset either, can I, because that would be hypocrisy, because despite lacking all belief, what my nephew wanted was me as his godfather.
So what I am getting at is sometimes what is said is not what is meant, sometimes the word choices are based on "society" at that time.
Sometimes it isn't.
But guess what? It wouldn't matter even if I WERE bigoted. My two nephews wanted and I don't get to decide what they want because it didn't involve me, and in the case of being a godfather, I chose to go along and pretend for his sake, I chose for me. But who they love? Doesn't involve me, and I may understand WHY someone is upset at choosing differently, I just don't get why it would matter.
After seven years together, my partner just came out to her father, and it was an extremely difficult and heartbreaking conversation. Your words of affirmation were especially touching and dear that we needed to hear. Love you Ashleigh! You are fantastic and we love you too, you red-headed movie goddess!!

The realization that the son is the villain of the movie hit me like a thunderbolt

This is one of those movies that just always puts me in a good mood, even when I’m feeling down. I love Nathan Lane in pretty much everything he’s in. Here he gives one of his best performances. He and Robin Williams are both so brilliant in this.
The amount of talent Nathan Lane had to have had to play a gay man badly pretending to walk like John Wayne. Seriously seriously a remarkable acting job on his part. First time I saw the Birdcage, I had many many belly laughs. It still remains one of my favorite movies.

Ashleigh, I loved your closing comments and your support for the LGBTQ community. I know this is not the first time you have reached out to support people. You are so classy and such a wonderful human being.
I'm a 63 year old straight, cis male. When I was growing up I didn't know a single person who was an out gay or lesbian. I lived through a time when I saw friends very cautiously coming out and could see the troubled look in their eyes not knowing how I would react and if I'd end our friendship. I also saw far to many my age who were afraid to come out and hid their true selves. Who felt they could not have real relationships because of the hate they'd face, so they were relegated to very risky sex encounters at the time that AIDs was emerging. If you have ever seen pictures of the giant AIDS quilt, I know far too many names on it.
Keep up the fun reactions and thank you for your advocacy. I know it means a lot to many.
I honestly teared up when you said you had never seen Robin Williams in live action before. What a joy you have ahead of you! He has so many wonderful movies! And thank you for celebrating PRIDE with us!
When he says, "We thought it would be better if you weren't here," I always felt Armand was trying to soften the blow of Val wanting Albert gone. We get a lot of hints throughout the film, especially at the beginning, that Albert helped raise Val like his own and was an important, nurturing influence in his life. And Val himself doesn't admit that until the end of the movie.
Honestly thats the part of this movie I always had trouble buying. I'd imagine being the son of two gay men at this time, you'd have developed a pretty tough skin by college and have an ingrained fight back on the topic... for Val to so easily just toss Albert to the side never made sense to me.... and it makes him seem like a real piece of shit honestly. I think we're meant to forgive him because he's just being a short sighted stupid kid.... but the movie never really redeems him or makes him seem like he's struggling with it. He just seems like a shitty selfish asshole.... plus he also looks like 37.... which doesn't help sell the "stupid kid" vibe either lol
Never thought of this as a Pride movie specifically. It's a movie about being who you are and about the lengths that people will go for the ones they love. I feel that should be a universal concept. Great reaction, love this movie.......AND because I have seen anyone mention it yet, Dancing Ashleigh can absolutely get it. (Gotta give a girl her flowers)

Okay so the background for the history of this film is wild because it started as a French Film called LA Cage Aux Folles which became a musical of the same name by Jerry Herman of Hello Dolly and Mame Fame.
This film is the American remake version of the original French film.
Now a little fact regarding this particular film is Robin Williams and Nathan Lane wanted to improvise so much the legendary director Mike Nichols had them promise to do each scene as it was written then once that was done, they could do the scene with as much improvisation as they want.
The original French film is so good.
Seeing Nathan Lane acting the part of a gay man acting the part of John Wayne walking down a street was priceless! The amount of acting talent required to pull that off!

Also… this movie was a massive moment for me growing up as a closeted gay boy in small town Kentucky. One of the first times I saw a loving gay family in media. This movie made me realize I could live a life filled with love one day.

Every actor in this movie just KILLED IT! One of the most fun times me and my wife ever had watching a movie for the first time. Robin Williams is one of my favorite actors of all time, and it hurts my heart that you haven't seen him in much. "The World According to Garp" is in my top 3 movies of all-time.

Robin was among the best dramatic actors of his generation. And he was even better at comedy. Brilliant.
My all time favorite roll thar Robin played was actully as a guest star on Law and Order Special Victims Unit where he played the husband and suspect of his wifes murder.
It was a small roll for him, but he brought such an amazing level of emotion and an accurate portrail that you could believe that he was that character in that situation and not an actor trying to portray a character in that sutuation.

I quote "Oh my god, I pierced the toast" every time I make ... well ... toast. My wife has no clue what I'm referencing. Such a great movie and very fitting for Pride month. As a Star Wars fan, I had to wait 3 years for Revenge of the Sith; it can definitely take a backseat for an extra 2 weeks.

Haha , the whole toast scene is the best, I used to say it at work in a restaurant all the time, and after a while all the young people I worked with decided to see this movie because of it, they couldn't believe we had movies about this subject in the 90's. A single line from a movie can do so much.

Actually, the lies began with his fiancee, didn't they? I always took him as a victim of circumstances and unable to figure a better way to deal with the issue.
Course it’s both kids fault. But remember they were KIDS! 18 and 20 respectively and what kids that age are not all about themselves! I think I works great as the dynamic and also worked well for his parents who just want the best for their kids in the end.
Yeah, and he kinda caves at the end, but he doesn't express any regret or shame for what he did. I really wish they had written him to really feel bad about what is happening through this whole movie. Maybe it's the director's fault, but Val comes across very entitled and annoyed more than even a little grateful for everyone's sacrifice for him.
@@trekkiejunk Maybe they thought it would detract regarding the antics of the situation to spend time trying to make Val more sympathetic. I saw him as trying to help Barbara and not thinking long term. It is thin and perhaps this soured the actor on his career in the long run.
@@Ickshter2112 I agree, judging the kids harshly seems out of proportion. Also, the core of this story is the sacrifices parents make for their kids, and if the kids are perfectly empathetic and PC and unconcerned with conforming to society, then you lose that element.
The part where he falls with the pot was an accident. You can hear it in Robin's voice when he tries to stop himself from laughing.

"The Birdcage" was released around the turning point where positive, gay movies by major studios went mainstream in the US. Prior to this, they were low budget, poorly made, frequently not good movies, and nearly all were centered on AIDS and the death of a main character. Go further back and if a movie had a gay character then that person was a villain or extreme deviant who also died. We've come a long way in some ways but the bigotry and oppression we see in this movie will always exist.
I worked at a Theater for many years and we played The Birdcage as a musical for many years. It was always a big party and celebration of mixing everyone together and feeling great. No prejudice, no hate only fun and tolerance for every lifestyle. As it should be! ❤️
I absolutely adore this movie. As a big Robin Williams fan (god rest his soul) this movie is an absolute gem of comedic proportion. Having the Genie, Timon and Moe from the Simpsons all in one movie is a stellar performance.
Right… the only other comedian I like besides Robin Williams is Jim Carrey. I’m not a fan of any other comedian, honestly. Those 2 blow the rest of them outta the water

Your videos are funny and touching, but your heartfelt message was especially needed right now, during a time in which portions of our government are doing their best to revert us back to Neanderthal days. When this came out “palimony” was a common joke term for whatever legal papers gay folks could try and finesse to get as close to legitimizing their relationship legally.
Each time they found a loophole to try and tie themselves or assets together it was quickly undone as there always seemed to be teams of asshats sniffing it out and burning it down.
Now with national legal gay marriage only 7 years old the supreme court is poised to stamp it out.
Love will win - but the war is unacceptable.
Palimony wasn't a joke term and it didn't originate with gay relationships. Palimony is the term for an agreement regarding a division of assets for non-married cohabiting couples.
The court could reverse that decision, but it will be irrelevant if the Congress simply passes a Federal law stating the governmental definition of marriage extends to any 2 consenting adults, subject only to State imposed restrictions which are independent of biological sex (e.g., they can prohibit marriage between close relatives, they can put lower age restrictions, etc.). The current Congress should have no problem passing such a bill, but somehow I don't see them making an effort to do so. Any such bill should also be clear that it limits other governmental control, but has no effect on whether any given religion or any officiant (other than a government employee) can choose not to officiate such a wedding.

Palimony is not a proper legal term for anything. It is used widely now as shorthand for co habitation agreements but it was originated by a lawyer for a woman suing her dude partner after their breakup and for straight couples that is what it is mainly used for. Straight couples don’t often sign a pre-nup when they aren’t going to “nup” and so co-habitation promises brought to light after the relationship has ended become what is called “palimony” disputes.
From the context of the time and setting of this film gay couples with financial means had started to use these cases to sculpt their own agreed upon relationship divisions while still in the relationship.
I was in my early 20s when this came out and this is my community. I stand by my comment that the name “palimony” was a behind closed doors joke term.

She was 18. He says you can't get married you're not even 19. I remember when I first saw this movie. I was 16 and the girl I was dating wanted me to watch it and I heard Robin Williams and Nathan Lane were in it so I was like okay sure. Fast forward 18 years and not only do I love this movie, but this is probably my fourth favorite film of all time which for me is saying a hell of a lot. Because my first three favorites are Jurassic Park jaws and scream and they have been my favorites since 93 95 and 96 and for this movie to be just behind that is really meaningful. I have shown this movie to so many people and never had someone dislike it. I've also used this film as "Netflix and chill" material. Many many many many many many many many many many times.

This was such a notable character for Robin Williams. Up until this point, Robin had always played the over-the-top character in movies and TV. In a movie that calls for over-the-top character more than most, Robin played the "straight man" character or a supporting role to Nathan Lane. IMO it was a great casting choice, Robin would have been too over the top as Albert.
I believe he was supposed to play the other role at the start but the original actor pulled out and he asked to swap.

Robin donned his dress in Mrs. Doubtfire. Hilariously, I might add. I think this movie was cast perfectly all the way around.
I'm straight but I love this movie. My dad has been friends with this gay guy since before I was born. I troll him non stop about how gay he is and he constantly makes me laugh. He's one the strongest men I've known in my life. I'll surely tell him to check out your channel its right up his alley.

I am SOOO happy you watched this movie and it is one of the movies my mom loved to watch. It still makes me laugh whenever Robin and Nathan are on screen together. It also makes me wonder if any of their scenes were ad-libbed or not.

I think a live watch along would be a bad idea. Both of those movies just have so much going on and having live chat going at the same time would just be too distracting.

When I first saw this movie I knew that there was a chance I could live the life I needed to live - Not long after, I came out to my wife and ended up raising my children with my same sex partner. That world feels like a long time ago now but I still feel those insecurities sometimes, especially when I see how the western world is (in my view) leaning back towards those right wing policies. Also Tom Hanks in Philadelphia is outstanding !!! - an amazing film, please watch it xxx
I only recently started following your channel and am so glad I did because listening to you talking about how you support the LGBTQ+ community got me emotional and I thank you. I'll try to make this short but I know what it's like to be ostracised by your family for simply being gay. I grew up in a very strict religion (Jehovah's Witness) and had to hide who I was, that was until I was "outed" when I was 22. I was immediately banned from my families home, so lost my family and at the same time had to leave the religion which meant I lost every single friend I had from the age of 5 yrs old. I spiralled into a life of alcohol and drugs, never thinking I was good enough , and tried suicide more than once. Thankfully I sucked at it. I am now 56 yrs old, and although nothing has ever changed with my family, I found my chosen family and came out the other end successfully. Thank you for being you.
You didn't lose me, I'm a 55 yo straight dude and The Birdcage is one of my favorite movies. Nathan Lane is hilarious. You need to see him in 'Mouse Hunt'.

Lots of great voice actors in this movie. Robin is the Genie, of course. Nathan Lane is Timmon, as you figured out. And Agador is Hank Azaria, who provides about a million character voices on the Simpsons, including Moe, Apu, Chief Wiggum and policeman Lou.

Robin Williams had done many other animated characters besides the genie… the bat 🦇 character from Ferngully, the red robot from Robots and one of the penguins from Happy Feet. Robin Williams was absolutely amazing

The Fisher King and The World according to Garp are both kind of odd movies. But I think you’ll dig Robin‘s performances in them.
Don't forget Patch, Adams, Jakob the Liar, Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, Man of the Year, Hook, Night at the Museum, Jack, Bicentennial Man, the sitcom Mork and Mindy, and if you want something that's less comedic and more suspenseful, The Final Cut has a very intriguing story.
The Fisher King, Bicentennial Man, and Good Will Hunting are my favorite dramatic Robin Williams films. He won the Oscar for Good Will Hunting.
Some of his darker roles that I like are World's Greatest Dad, One Hour Photo, and Insomnia.
For comedies, it Mrs. Doubtfire and the underrated The Best of Times.
Moscow on the Hudson is one of his early ones..was played as a comedy in the trailers, but was a little more serious.. and to see him in his most creepy role, "One Hour Photo" is a little unsettling..
@@richardb6260 I feel Bicentennial man was ruined by a bad screenplay script. Fisher King doesn't have Robin as the MC, but he does have a real role to play, and does it well.
Those 4 are brilliant. Fisher King sucked and I agree that Bicentennial Man was a great performance and concept spoiled by bad screenwriting.

This movie was a staple in my house growing up. My dad loved it and I think it helped him to open up to a community that he had no connection with. The Birdcage taught me that Val's family is just like any other family. He is raised by two loving parents, it just so happens that they are both men.

I agree 1000% - Gene Hackman must be given props for his performance, and that "drag" scene at the end is priceless. I nearly soiled myself with laughter first time I saw it. And I love Christine Baranski (first exposure to her was on the Cybill Sheperd show, been loving her ever since) she was in Chicago (Ms. Sunshine) The woman can sing and act.
This is one of my absolute favorite comedies! Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria are hilarious in this and of course Robin Williams, well what can we say, he was a national treasure!

You know this is 26 years old. Thats just means Im old because I was in high scholl when this came out. Robin Williams is great. If you have to watch Philadelphia wait till December during World AIDS day. Its Miami its South beach it is a drag. A good if not a great drag show. Yes Nathan Lane voiced Timon from the Lion King.
As an older straight man, this was one of the funniest movies I ever saw when it came out.
Every Millennial of whom I am aware gets the best parts of this generation by demonstrating kindness that just wasn't always there for someone who remembers the 1970s!

But (and this is coming from a moderately conservative 52 year old) your message at 29:50 was deeply moving. Since I've always had a "live and let live" attitude about sexuality, most of the time I don't think particularly hard about how difficult the lives of people in the LGBTQ community can often be.
