Crying is never pathetic. Everyone gets destroyed by Fried Green Tomatoes. When I first watched it I wasn't okay for weeks. We love you, keep on keeping on.
It didn't bother me as a kid, probably because I hadn't yet learned how to get in touch with my feelings, but as an adult I watched this review and realized that when Ruth got sick, Idgie had to move all Ruth's stuff out of her bedroom before the doctor could come over so no one would realize they were living as wives together, and I frigging lost it. I remember seeing this movie on my parent's movie shelf and trying to watch it. My dad said 'no, you can't watch that til your older.' I was 13 and I didn't listen. Of course. A couple of nights later I come out of my room, face red, eyes red, trying to hide it all and my dad goes 'I told you.'
Just imagine a barracks room full of Army guys watching this on a VHS tape rented from Blockbuster back in 1992. We cheered Big George BBQing Frank up.
@@wesdog8975 Haha.....for what it's worth, I saw it in a theater full of people and the sobbing nearly drowned out the movie, men and women. Even my badass husband cried. It's okay.
I've seen this movie about a billion times and your reaction inspired me to read the book. Holy cow, it was so different. 1. The story is 100% lesbian love story between Iggie and Ruth, and no one judges them for it oddly (only because it's set in the 30's and 40's mostly) 2. Buddy (older Buddy) never meets Ruth and dies far from home (no one in the family sees it) 3. There are a million black characters in the the book with amazing stories that are totally cut for the movie. 4. The murder/trial is about 4% of the book and the trial happens many years after Ruth dies. 5. Only Sipsey murders Frank Bennet. And on top of that she beheads him and another boy stabs his body for fun while he guards it in a shed. 6. Smokey Lonesome dies in the snow trying to get back to Whistle Stop years after the town has been abandoned. 7. Stump grows up and tells endless stories about Whistle Stop to everyone. 8. Ninny is NOT Iggie. She married Theo, Iggie's brother. And at the end she does die and Evelyn hears about it while she's at fat camp in California. 9. When Evelyn goes to visit Ninny's grave she finds the honey and note on Ruth's grave. 10. Iggie spends her elderly years in Florida selling catfish and honey on the side of the highway with her brother.
This is definitely in my top 20 movies, and i love movies all the way from the 1930s to today. (Maybe even top 10.) My top 5 are: 1) Gone With The Wind 2) The Wizard of Oz 3) The Rocky Horror Picture Show 4) 1776 5) Calamity Jane (starring Doris Day) others in my Top Ten would include Hitchcock’s Lifeboat and Agatha Christie’s Witness For the Prosecution (1950s). Plus I love Pixar (Up) and Disney (Emperor’s New Groove, Sleeping Beauty) movies. Musicals are another favorite of mine (4 out of my top 5) so Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (first movie i saw in the theater) and The Sound of Music also make my top 20. Newer movies, I love the Marvel Universe, but i tear right up at Saving Mr Banks, so that has to be top 20. My Cousin Vinnie should be in the Top 20 also. (that’s 15 out of 20, so many good movies!)
I remember sitting in a full movie theatre back in 1991, trying hard not to weep, and failing dismally as everyone huddled in the darkness sniffled and wept and blew their collective noses into soggy overused tissues. I've seen Fried Green Tomatoes at least five times since and thought I'd built up some insulation against all those powerful emotions, but today ... today watching it break your heart as it broke mine all those years ago, I wept almost as hard as I did that first time.
Same. I remember turning to a friend of mine in the theater and saying it was very unfair of a movie to make me cry only 10 mins. in. A rollarcoaster ride of a movie indeed.
Me too. I didn’t I cried as much the first time. Had to stay composed. But subsequent viewings, knowing what was coming, ( and being alone) I’d let loose more. And I cried right along with Ashleigh today.
Most people don't realize that Idgie & Ruth were lovers. In the novel, written by Fannie Flagg, they were in love and it made for a much more profound take on their relationship. Of course in 1991 audiences just weren't too accepting of that sort of thing so it was pretty much taken out of the screenplay except for some really obvious implications including the scene where Idgie kisses Ruth outside at night.
I read somewhere that the director said the food fight in the back of the Cafe was a stand-in for a sex scene since they couldn't have a real scene between two women.
And Fannie Flagg (who is a lesbian in real life) was actually in this movie as one of the women leading the groups that Evelyn went to with her friend.
Man, making someone go blind into Fried Green tomatoes? That's rough. That's Hard Mode right there. Few movies are as effective at kicking you right in the feels.
@@seecha8970 I disagree. Knowing roughly what to expect, but with nio spoilers of course, allows you to get into the right mindset and have the correct expectations. Too many movies have been deemed "bad" just because people went in "blind" with just their expectations.
The part where Kathy Bates says to the young bi*ches: "I'm older and I have better insurance!" Is my mom's and I favorite part. And I have a feeling your going to call your mama after this still in tears and ask 'Why didn't you tell me about the sad parts, or ANYTHING about this movie?!'
Great reaction! You might have missed that this is really a love story between Ruth and Idgie. It’s subtle because it was the 90’s and they couldn’t make it obvious, but this movie is made from the book and in the book they are clearly in a romantic relationship.
9 year old boy goes with his grandmother to the movies and learns more about love, loss, friendship and just being a decent human being, then he could of had by not skipping school to go see a movie with his grandma. I’m sorry that you had to cry so much while watching this movie, but it shows me what a decent human being that you are.
The elderly lady in the home was Jessica Tandy. She was the original Blanche in the Broadway production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" and was the star of "Driving Miss Daisy".
She had a 52 year love affair with her husband, actor Hume Cronin They starred in Batteries Not Included late in their lives and careers. And they were WONderful in it. Such a sweet little movie.
I think beans yelling was her sharing her own grief over the movie and your sadness. And I think we all needed that sweet palette cleanser that was Beansy at the end of the video. Your reaction in this video is a good example of why i watch these videos and subbed to the patreon. just pure, authentic reaction. no phoniness. All real and all out there for good and bad, happy and sad. Amazing reaction Ashleigh.
I really like it when you cry in your reactions. Not because I want you to be sad, but because it’s one of the most honest things I’ve ever seen on the internet. You don’t have to post it, but you do anyway, and I love you for it.
Omg, I’m literally dying over her. “I KNOW BEANS......I’m a mess”!! I just can’t, not sure when I’ve laughed harder. What an awesome reaction, love this movie.
You should design and sell "Beans Bags." Big, squishy, plush beanbag stuffed animals that look like Beans - to hug while watching sad movies like this. I'd buy one.
or, you could get your very own cat.. at the rescue. Feed your own beans.. and love a live kitty. Be responsible for.. like Ashleigh. You'll receive the same love back.. that you bestow your kitty. xo :*
@@keetahbrough I have three doggos and two kitties - all rescue animals - so I certainly identify with your suggestion. That said, not everyone is going to be able to adopt a rescue animal for a variety of valid reasons (income, allergies, apartment pet policy, etc). Don't know if any of those apply to Colin or not... who knows, he may ALREADY have a house with one or more rescue animals in the family. This movie got some criticism when it was released for not making the lesbian relationship as clear as it was in the book, but it seems to be more accepted today as being obvious enough.
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 I think when it came out, same-sex relationships were uncommon in popular media, so it was expected to be more explicit like in the novel. Today, we're used to that kind of messaging in popular culture, so it feels more obvious to interpret it that way.

There really is a Whistle Stop Cafe that does indeed serve fried green tomatoes (among other Southern foods) just north of Macon, Georgia. It is in the actual area where many of the scenes were filmed. After the film became a huge success, the Whistle Stop Cafe set was turned into an actual restaurant, and its surrounding area became a tourist attraction. Although they may have filmed in Georgia, the true Whistle Stop Cafe is in Irondale, Alabama (a suburb of Birmingham, where author Fannie Flagg grew up.)
Yes, the Cafe is really there and some other little easter eggs in the area. I have eaten there before...but I did not tell them I am from Valdosta, Ga. We are not all like Frank Bennett down here! I did NOT eat the BBQ!
This is one of those movies that men and women love. Gets everybody crying. Soooo much happening. Funny, sad, suspenseful, never boring. Jessia Tandy was also a superb actress. My dad actually had a bit part in this movie as a juror in the court scenes. He can be seen in the far right on the back row of the jury at the 15:37 mark of your video here. The lecturer at the 5:21 mark of your video is Fannie Flagg. She wrote the book "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" that the movie is based on. The bee charming scene at the 6:58 mark was actually performed by Mary Stuart Masterson and is authentic with all of the bees on her. She actually agreed to do the scene for authenticity. My dad got to meet Jessica Tandy on set and she posed for a couple of photos while she had the pink/purple hair. The man in the old Cadillac at the 14:03 mark was my mom's uncle. He got jealous of my granddad being in a movie a couple of years earlier and had to get into one too. Hahaha!!! You should actually make a trip to Juliette, GA and make a video eating at The Whistle Stop Cafe when they reopen from the pandemic closures. I think they actually used each seating area inside the cafe in the film. So, you can reference a scene from each sitting area. Jessica Tandy was in "The Birds", but is probably most famous for her part in "Cocoon" with her husband Hume Cronin. Mary Stuart Masterson (Idgie) was in "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "Benny & Joon". What's really ironic is that I was watching "Some Kind of Wonderful" when my dad came home from his first day on set. He said "She was on set with me today". He thought she was about 12 years old. Hahaha! The director, Jon Avnet, actually gave Tom Cruise his start in the movie "Risky Business". That's enough trivia for now. Now, you have some other movies to place on your list for viewing.
It was reported that the stunt double freaked out when she saw the bees and QUIT! Mary Stuart then agreed to do the scene herself. Recently, with FTG's return to the big screen via Fathom Events & TCM, more info was published in an interview: "Wearing a drop of queen bee pheromone, Masterson actually did stick her hand into that hive full of bees. The pheromone attracted the bees to her, and she became, as she described, "I was effectively a giant bee magnet." It was a relatively closed set that day, just Masterson, the director, the director of photography, a driver, and "the bee guy." Oh, and a lot of bees, of course." --- "Masterson noted that this the last major scene she shot for the entire movie, "Not by accident. You know in case I died or something," she said with a laugh." (Southern Living, May 7, 2021)
Mary-Louise Parker, who played Ruth, has been in quite a bit too. She's probably most known for the Showtime series Weeds, but she also played a recurring character in The West Wing (anybody knows the infamous "Marion Coatsworth-Hay" scene from that show knows exactly who she was).

Hon you are a total treat. I haven’t seen fried green tomatoes since it came out in 91. It was written by Fanny Flagg - first as a novel and then as a screenplay. Fannie was also an actress Who appeared on the game show match game. If you haven’t guessed Ruth and itchy‘s relationship was deeper than portrayed in the film. The early 90s audience wasn’t ready for the novel version of that relationship, well at least that’s what the studio thought. I believe we were, but studio suits are notoriously conservative and tepid. You made ME. cry with your reactions LOL! It is a gut wrenching movie. Thanks and cheers from Edmonton Alberta Canada. I waited on Mary Louise Parker in my hometown right after this came out. I didn’t want to be that annoying fan so I kept myself composed throughout her dinner until she came out of the bathroom and I blurted I love you so much 🤦🏻♀️ she was very sweet and gave me hug.
Yes, I just want her to get to smile and laugh again and her current lineup isn’t likely to achieve that. My Cousin Vinny, though... that would be a nice break.
My grandpa lost his arm to a train when he was 12 years old so that part always gets me. Fried Green Tomatoes is a classic and this film keeps getting better each time you watch it.
As a sometimes angry, bitter and cynical older guy who first saw this as a young teenager, I wanted to say that your reaction was an immediate opening of a long forgotten floodgate. The power of this story is, without any doubt, one that is soul crushing, uplifting and cathartic, and I'm so pleased to share that (vicariously) with you. Thank you for being so genuine and opening your heart to all of us movie nerds. I cried, too. Big love your way Ashleigh

But my list could go on and on... I laughed and cried right along with you. Glad you liked it and just know the fact that it destroyed you is the same reason so many of us love it.
@Carolina Fantaccini I actually have the first 3 books in the series. I didn't realize there was one more until just now. I haven't read them yet, but might very well start on them tonight. I don't usually have much time for reading though it's my 2nd favorite thing behind writing my own stories.
Bonus: Young Johnny Depp. She would swoon at it, though she might want some understanding of the silent greats, Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd to get what Benny is doing.

I love Field of Dreams so much. Really a great tearjerker for men. I had a poor relationship with my dad and this film gets me every time. I have 6 movie posters hanging in my T.V./game room - Alien, The Exorcist, The Thing, Shawshank Redemption, Close Encounters of the third kind and Field of Dreams. It absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those classics. Would love to see an Ashleigh reaction.
Yeah, I'd vote for field of dreams. It won't make you cry as much as this one or Steel Magnolias, but if you don't break up at the end, you have no emotions. Gets me every time.
So who put the honey on Ruth’s grave?.. lol. It is her.. Ruth calls Idgie the Bee Charmer that’s the surprise at the ending when Kathy Bates says “ maybe we’ll see her today.” For her not to be there would have to be another old lady running around a dead town. Doesn’t make sense. I don’t see them in that kind of relationship either.. best friends. Idgie married a man and had a child.
@@nikkiplatt316 Idgie put the honey there, she’s still alive. You should read the book, it’s stated plainly in there that Ruth and Idgie were a couple. Just because someone has a child or marries someone of the opposite sex doesn’t mean they’re not gay, especially in the era that this took place.
@@judithcure2255 I’ll do that. I honestly haven’t read it but this film didn’t elude to any of that. And they sure make it seem like it’s her. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I always took it because that honey doesn’t look like it’s been there very long.
So this book was written by a lesbian author - Ruth & Idgie are a couple. But in 1991 they chickened out & repackaged this as a "best friends" flick. The food fight scene was shot in lieu of a sex scene! I saw this in the theater in 1991 at age 12. It's kind of a touchstone movie for gay ladies, especially oldies like me! If you're up for it, the book is very good. It's put together like a collection of newspaper articles & short stories that you kind of piece together into the whole story. Thx for being willing to share your raw emotions with everyone! You had me simultaneously sobbing & cracking up, and we all know that laughter through tears is our favorite emotion!
Well if you want " lesbian couple" movies who are more explicit you can always go for european cinema xD Especially french movies. But i think it was clear enough that they both were more than "Just friends". Sometimes it works better if it's not too explicit because if done right it can be clear enough. That's also something to look at if you come back to the film years later and realize something that may have gone over your head before. You don't have that with films who don't shy away and leave no room for your mind to let it settle. More explicit doesn't always age well and can too easily come off as clumsy & too forced trying to be edgy. Especially nowdays.
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 Nobody is asking for a sex scene, and there wasn't any in the book. But it made it quite clear that they were together, while the director publicly said the food fight was 'standing in' for any kind of intimate relationship. Which is stupid and yes, chickening out.
@@whatareyoulookingat908 Cleaned up what? There wasn't any sex in the novel, just rather obvious language about how they lived that made it clear they were a couple (and that basically nobody cared).

I've seen this movie about a billion times and your reaction inspired me to read the book.
Holy cow, it was so different.
1. The story is 100% lesbian love story between Iggie and Ruth, and no one judges them for it oddly (only because it's set in the 30's and 40's mostly)
2. Buddy (older Buddy) never meets Ruth and dies far from home (no one in the family sees it)
Such a brilliant book!

This is honestly one of the great undervalued movies of the 90s.
And Mary Stuart Masterson never got to be as big a stat as she should have been.
This is definitely in my top 20 movies, and i love movies all the way from the 1930s to today. (Maybe even top 10.)
My top 5 are:
1) Gone With The Wind
2) The Wizard of Oz
3) The Rocky Horror Picture Show
4) 1776
5) Calamity Jane (starring Doris Day)
others in my Top Ten would include Hitchcock’s Lifeboat and Agatha Christie’s Witness For the Prosecution (1950s).
1. You need to watch The Color Purple.
2. Don’t plan on doing anything else the rest of the day.
yes, i just recommended it!!
After watching Oprah Winfrey act, I find t hard to anything the rest of the day too
Do you want to kill her?
Yes, Ash, watch The Color Purple.
I somehow managed to never see that until about a year ago. I felt cheated that I'd gone my whole life without it. It's that good.
I loved how cuddly and supportive Beans was at the end. She probably sensed you were in distress and empathized in her own kitty way.
Did too and failed miserably. After that experience I did not go watch a drama in cinemas for about 5 years.
Same. I remember turning to a friend of mine in the theater and saying it was very unfair of a movie to make me cry only 10 mins. in. A rollarcoaster ride of a movie indeed.
YOU ARE NOT A MAN.
Same...
I grew up watching this movie and at the time I didn’t notice the subtle hints of their relationship. Today I can see it.
I read somewhere that the director said the food fight in the back of the Cafe was a stand-in for a sex scene since they couldn't have a real scene between two women.
Yeah, the movie REALLY soft pedaled that. It's there if you look. A real shame they were so coy about that.
Even though they never say they were a couple I could tell even as a kid that they were supposed to be in love.
And Fannie Flagg (who is a lesbian in real life) was actually in this movie as one of the women leading the groups that Evelyn went to with her friend.
Literally the second I saw the thumbnail I said to myself: “Oh shit! This movie’s gonna mess Ashleigh up!” I wasn’t wrong 😂😂😂

I have always wanted to go there. My grandma went there when I was a little girl and she told me all about it.

I wanna see her do Karate Kid AND My Cousin Vinnie. Get her on some Machio!!
The two what? What's a yute? Lol
My grandpa lost his arm to a train when he was 12 years old so that part always gets me. Fried Green Tomatoes is a classic and this film keeps getting better each time you watch it.
I was waiting for Ash to yell out, "they need to ban trains in that town." 😄
As a sometimes angry, bitter and cynical older guy who first saw this as a young teenager, I wanted to say that your reaction was an immediate opening of a long forgotten floodgate. The power of this story is, without any doubt, one that is soul crushing, uplifting and cathartic, and I'm so pleased to share that (vicariously) with you. Thank you for being so genuine and opening your heart to all of us movie nerds. I cried, too. Big love your way Ashleigh
No matter how many times I watch this movie, I bawl like a baby. It's on my favorites list of women and enduring friendships- right along with Steel Magnolias, Beaches, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Riding in Cars with Boys, Boys on the Side... But my list could go on and on... I laughed and cried right along with you. Glad you liked it and just know the fact that it destroyed you is the same reason so many of us love it.
Always crying
@Carolina Fantaccini I actually have the first 3 books in the series. I didn't realize there was one more until just now. I haven't read them yet, but might very well start on them tonight. I don't usually have much time for reading though it's my 2nd favorite thing behind writing my own stories.
"She is so PRETTY!" well then "Benny's and Joon" is a must watch.
I would have gone with "Some Kind of Wonderful!"
Yes to both of these.
YES!
Bonus: Young Johnny Depp. She would swoon at it, though she might want some understanding of the silent greats, Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd to get what Benny is doing.
Boys On The Side is another good one with Mary Louise Parker who played Ruth
Great reaction! Love this movie! Beans was crying at the end because she felt your heart hurting, and was saying "Ok Mom... enough emotion! Come play with me!"
I saw this film when it was first in theatres and i was a 20 year old acting student. It was recommended to Me by My acting teacher. So my dorm roomies and i went to it. It blew us away although we actually were to young to really get all the nuances. I bought the darn thing on vhs tape and we kept watching it to help us summon up inspiration for good acting, to help drum up strong emotions. I've not watched this film in some 20 years or more now, and watching it with You in clips still killed me at the same places. Tears fell with You. I should mention I'm a 52 year old straight white married male, not really the demographic for this movie, but thru circumstances I grew to love good acting where-ever it may be found. I gotta wonder if You'd ever work in theatre Yourself? Your so able to be moved, to bring your own emotions to the surface and your so unafraid to show it to the world in extreme close up, shamelessly. This is a gift and a talent. You are very talented at doing this on youtube and should be very proud of what You've done. I always look forward to You exploring films and look for it twice a week. Take care! Mo.
50yr old German here - I just saw it in cinema without wanting to become an actor... I'm not even sure, why I went, because from the description this completely wasn't my cuppa tea... Actually this might have been one of the few times my mum went to cinema and took me along... Or was it one of the early rentals when we got our VCR? Damn, it's so long ago... :D
I do remember being adequately blown away by it. Great story, well told and acted!
I don't think Ashleigh ever tried her hand at acting, which I think is a good thing because her reactions are so authentic. I know she was in the radio business, and she certainly knows how to entertain.
My husband always tears up at fried green tomatoes. A good movie is a good movie.
Mary Stuart Mastersons stunt double refused to do the bee scene so Mary did it herself, from what i've heard.
OMG This has got to be the best, most honest reaction to any movie, I have ever seen. Damn. I hope you're OK.
And sorry I laughed my ass off at your "misery."
My mom and I bawled all the way home from the theatre after we saw this. We had no idea what we were in for since, if I remember correctly, they marketed Fried Green Tomatoes with many of the Kathy Bates moments, making it look like a comedy. I'll never forget what this movie did to us emotionally. What a story! All of your reactions are so real - thank you.
"Face it girls, I'm older & I have more insurance!" I love that line so much!
Never be ashamed to cry, Ash ~ We love you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
*YOU ARE NOT PATHETIC!* ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Totally loved that Ashleigh's Mother remembered the line
I cried like a baby when I watched it for the first time. Heck I'm crying now watching you watch it. FIELDS OF DREAMS is another good movie you would enjoy, it's not about sports even if it talks about baseball, it's about relationships, family and life choices and it will not completely destroy you.
Gigi C. - Yes, what a great suggestion, such a great movie.
Yeah, I'd vote for field of dreams. It won't make you cry as much as this one or Steel Magnolias, but if you don't break up at the end, you have no emotions. Gets me every time.
Definitely watch field of dreams if you have never seen it. It's an amazing film.
I love your reactions. Mrs. Threadgoode wasn't Idgie, she was Idgie's sister in law. Oh, and Idgie and Ruth are a couple not just best friends 💖🏳️🌈
@@nikkiplatt316 maybe it's because it was the 90's, straight washing was rampant in mainstream movies. I hope you do read the book, it's so good.
@@judithcure2255 already in my Amazon order lol. Thanks for letting me know!!
"I need a nap!" Never stop being you, Ashleigh.
Right? Bless her heart.
Yeah. Glad they cleaned up a bit from the novel. It made it more palatable to the masses 😉.
@@whatareyoulookingat908 Cleaned up what? There wasn't any sex in the novel, just rather obvious language about how they lived that made it clear they were a couple (and that basically nobody cared).
“Kathy! It’s HER ya idiot!!!” Was so funny to me for some reason, probably because it was such a stark interjection to the sobs right before and after hahaha
I've watched tons of different TH-cam reaction channels and each one has their own great way of reacting but you my dear are truly my favorite! You are hilarious and genuine and I keep coming back for your comedy and of course the cat! ❤❤❤
So wrong to say but I've honestly never laughed so much at a woman crying throughout a movie; just can't stop loving her reactions
