Another great video put together by Blair. It’s great to see all the crew still working hard while I’m off on vacation. Don’t worry the initiation is all in good fun and totally harmless. You’ll see next year Paige and Blair initiating the next group of Pollywogs. See you next week 🛥️🥂
I think the pranking breaks the monotony of being underway and cabin fever, laughter is the best medicine. All the crew are so well balanced and a joy to watch and I’m addicted now. You’re awesome Captain, safe travels to all! 😊
Do your crew members get a certificate of baptism signed by King Neptune and the Captain after their initiation? It is a normal custom to give any seaman a such as proof, and more importantly, to show on another boat in case they make another crossing;-) I know of boats and crews that will give you a second round if you can't prove that you have been initiated🙂
@@theresalewis6301 You seem to lack situation awareness. Here's a conversation about people being baptised by King Neptune. And you ask the captain if he is in a relationship with anyone from the crew? There's a time and place for everything, this is not it I'm pretty sure is safe to say. In earnest, if you want to know, maybe start by asking a more general question about their policies on crew relationships. From there you then know if this is something you can ask or not. If they say it is not allowed, then you have your answer. If they say it is, then you can consider if you think this is info that one might would even want to disclose. Makes sense?
It probably gets boring for you but I really appreciate it when you put up the name and position of each crew member the first time they appear on each video. Thanks.
I totally agree! Their beautiful smiles are so bright it dialates my pupils… And I’m binge watching since yesterday and sleep deprived. This is top shelf compared to reality below deck drama. Crew actually seem to enjoy their coworkers, regardless of rank, so refreshing.
My feathers got ruffled before I heard the explanation for your Shellback initiation. I crossed the equator in 1985 in the US Navy. Last week I called my wife a Pollywog, we were both in the Navy, so now we are taking a cruise from Australia to Hawaii next April.
I crossed the equator and became an honorable shellback at my 19.5 year mark in the US Navy, 6 months before I retired. The kids who worked for me, who were already shellbacks did not take it easy on me. 😂 Also, got my bluenose initiation above the Arctic Circle in the early 90s. 🥶
I spent 5 years flying reconnaissance out of NAS Keflavic (EC-121) and can't remember how many times I refreshed my Blue Nose certificate. Great times with great men and women.
It would be awesome if you guys did a feature video once a month or so on the crew and how each of them got their start in the industry , how old they were , best / worst story and so on. Especially Capt. Paul.
What's impressive is (to me) crew members change depending on the leg of journey and yet... they pull together and make it happen. What a well put together team... great attitude, work ethic and sense of oneness. Again, very impressive!
Thanks, Bubba, there are many moving parts to keep the train moving at all times. Crew needs down time and some R&R between seasons so we bring trusted temp crew to replace them for crossings and ship yard. 🛥🥂
Curious, does the "whole" crew return in November once repositioned? Do you and Paige rotate out part way through the Caribbean season?@@motoryachtloon
Back in the 70's, the USAF and the Navy had a similar "initiation ceremony" for those who had never flown over the Arctic Circle, called a "Blue Nose" flight. Upon crossing the 67th parallel (or there abouts). your nose was ceremoniously painted blue (usually with indelible marker so EVERYONG back at NAS Keflavic could identify the rookies). The ice cold water bath we called a "Thule doosh".
Holy Smokes you guys! What a glorious occasion in the polywog's career path! Thanks for sharing, and glad to see you're able to maneuver through Neptune's storms so far!
Got my Shellback in 1987 back when the US Navy could do some real hazing. Spent 2 days washing graphite grease off of ... well, everywhere😂😂😂😂 this video brought back memories 😅 great job.
Blair thank you and the Loon Crew for allowing us to be part of your adventures, South Africa and Zimbabwe must be a lonely place with all of the country persons on Charter Yachts. Keep up the good work as this really portrays how bad “Below Deck” is. Thank you and safe travels. 👍💪😎💰
Crossed the Equator on an US Navy Aircraft Carrier in 1981. That was a most interesting day. Much more fun during the crossings I had the honor to participate in after that.
I am so happy to see those wogs become Shellbacks! I went through it on the USS Constellation in 1989 going from San Diego to Val Pariso, Chile! Crossed 3 more times as a Shellback.
If done right, it's always fun if you're not too soft and squeamish hehe. I will never understand why some go over the limit where it is not fun for those being baptised. It's a celebration, not a punishment.
@@AB-80X Agreed. That being typed, the first time I crossed and they gave Shellback Certificates to those who opted not to participate at all, I knew yet another ancient piece of Naval tradition and history had ended as I knew it.
@@Retyrd_Squid One should not get a certificate when one does not participate. But it's not hard to find a way to include even the most shy and insecure. I've seen some instances where the girls were really nervous, and that was taken well care of so they still got their baptism, but also not felt like their boundaries had been overstepped. But weak sauce to get a certificate without the actual baptism by Neptune.
Some impressive bit of course plotting there, threading between the worst of the storms. Nicely done! Probably very welcome by the crew too, especially given the low freeboard.
My dad became a shellback in the 50's on the USS Coral Sea CV-43. The initiation on an aircraft carrier, as you could imagine, was. much more elaborate and lasted for several days. I had hoped to become one back in the late 90's on board the USS L Mendel Rivers SSN-686 but our plans to dip just past the equator got nixed due to change in our schedule. I have crossed the pond several times but unfortunately, in the USN, the equator is still the requirement. I have managed to muster at The Captain's Cabin in Gib. Congratulations and stay out of that nasty weather!
Great video; good fun and good sports all! I got the initiated on my Equator crossing on my 30th birthday; it's one I'll never forget. See you guys next week 🙂
Wow, I always imagined the crossing to be rough seas and high waves, I don't know why. What lovely calm waters you have, though I'm sure its not like that everyday. Great video, great fun, I'm so so so jealous.
Hey Jules, It gets rolly at times, but for the most part, it's usually quite calm, especially on this crossing heading west. We pay a lot of attention to the weather and wait for a favorable weather window before departing on the passage. 🛥🥂
Just the Bering Sea - 192’ fish processing ship - initiation was bitingly the head off a fresh caught herring. I was a city girl - 22:30 just working & living on ship was a culture shock. This was the late 80’s and the fish got more respect than we did. Except for the BS crap I really loved being on ship. Love the Vlog and content. Drone shots are amazing! 🙏🏻💙❤️🕊🕉

A bit tamer than when I became a shellback. At least you did not have to crawl thru a garbage chute. We left a trail of nasty clothing in our wake. No way was I going to save mine. 1982, en route to Australia on the USS Duncan, FFG-10. All I can say is the ceremony is much more pleasant as a Shellback than as a pollywog.
