- Archie (Carroll O'Connor) has a bad accident while driving his taxi and now he can barely move... leaving it up to the rest of the family (Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner) to look after him.
From Season 1, Episode 3 'Archie's Aching Back': Archie is involved in a minor, non-injury car accident, then finds out that Lionel Jefferson's family used an insurance settlement to open a dry-cleaning business. He gets an idea ... and a sudden aching back.

This episode would defy the later _Jeffersons_ _The First Store_ episode where in that one, George gets a loan from a bank to open his "first" store on the EXACT day of Martin Luther King Jr's assassination...
You're right of course. He gets a minority small business loan. In addition, his first cleaning store was NOT a franchise. He started it himself and was the sole owner. Also, he was NOT a janitor at an apartment house beforehand. He actually worked for someone else in a cleaning store which is how George learned the business.
@@retroguy9494 Actually in that episode George throws out the loan officer, after he is told that he cannot use the loan to open the store in his neighborhood. There was unrest in the area following the MLK assassination. The loan officer came to George's door using his coat to hide his face.
