When I watched Gab play this, she translated what Moeka said on the phone not just as "don't", but as "don't touch me", which makes the entire call so much creepier and the fact that the player character doesn't immediately go to check on her (or at least call someone about it) insane.
@@user-os7ec4dm8x Is this really a hill you want to die on? People enjoying seeing the different reactions that creators have to something? If you never encounter something that was entertaining enough to see it again/see it in a different perspective, that sounds like a you problem my dude.
@@user-os7ec4dm8x For the exact reason they commented about the translation, lol. Different gamers have different experiences and reactions to the game, and it can be entertaining and interesting to watch different takes of the same game.
If I had gotten a call that just felt wrong, I'd be doing something about it. Much less, "don't touch me". Then again, I've become a lot more of a worrywort as I've gotten older.
I think for the story to make a bit more sense you might need a bit more context. Teacher-Student sexual abuse is quite a bad problem in Japan, and in recent years there's been an uptick of Japanese media bringing light to the subject. Coach appearing at the kareoke bar makes complete sense to me at least, Moeka was caught phoning you (and taking the picture, aka a second person has proper evidence) and coach knew/found out where you where. To keep what he was doing hidden, he needed to deal with you and coming to kill/abuse you like that makes sense for how fucked up he is as he's a serial abuser. Don't really know how he managed to clear out the place, but honestly I've seen less believeable things in real life happen and blocking the entrance making 1 escape route also makes a lot of logical sense. I think, personally, this was one of their strongest narratively, but weakest gameplay-wise. The rhythm game seriously needed some TLC (no sane person would have those as keybinds lmao!) and the "hide and seek" ending could do with a bit more balancing (one youtuber ended up getting caught the second it hit 0, leading to a lot of confusion) with maybe some additional things, akin to Closing Shift's ending. The subject matter I felt was handled pretty well, and pretty belivable. The endings where he gets away, especially the police ending where there's not enough evidence, is realistic unfotunatly and just helps highlight the problems. The red herring creep was a nice touch, though perhaps could have been written a bit better
This. This was how I felt about the game. I actually related a lil more to this narrative than most of the other chillart's games. It's not amazing, but I really felt the tension in this one.
@@Kairii-Kylie In korea for example, cameras (including phones) by law need to make sound when you take a picture. Upskirt pics are not just a meme, they're a disgusting realiy in a lot of asian countries especially. Abuse against women is a real problem in Asia, very much including Japan, and it's being covered up by older generations there and left to fester. Younger generations are starting to create things such as this game (And for example, the song koi geba by atarashii gakko which is also about teacher-student abuse) to bring awareness to it and teach people what happens. It's a very sad reality. And is also a similar topic to Chilla art's prior game, The Closing Shift which is about stalking and that side of things.
Aside of gameplay, I really connected with this story. I think it was really realistic on many points (how the coach corners your friend when she's alone, how difficult it is to prove that he's an abuser, the ending thoughts of the protagonist...) and it shows the precarious situation in which particularly young girls are -in this case, not only the abuse by the coach but also the 'casual' harassment of the adult employee. I also like how you can go back and do things differently. As the story is presented as a memory of the past, it reminded me about traumatic things in your past you regret, and you wonder over and over what you could have done differently to prevent them. I like that here you are able to go back and save your friend. I saw a lot of people in the comments who said that they connected with the story too -of course, mostly women. I'm glad that with this and the one in the cafe Chilla is telling some stories where we can see our very real horror experiences presented in an respectul non-sensationalist way
@@neardarkroad1347 I don't know if I'm understanding what you said, but for me what was going to happen to the friend was obvious from the moment the coach appeared. We also had the warning John put at the beginning, too, but I honestly think it would have been quite evident from early on anyway
@@sofiipote7 I missed John warning at the beginning, so my experience of the game started from the starting of the game itself without any expectation. I don't think the coach debut appearance gave that much of obvious foreshadowing if we don't look at John warning
@@sofiipote7 if I might add, the game did have a foreshadowing of player will be alone from the game menu itself tho. above "The Karaoke" title or following that title (if you look at this vid title) there are Japanese Katakana read as Hito Kara. Combining that with the words before it, it become "Doing Karaoke by yourself", even the game menu did this, by putting the japanese word Karaoke in the background left of Hito Kara. This was explained by Gab smolders gameplay
24:37 "There's something in the fries" "yeah, hopefully it's potatoes" - This scene made me laugh so much and John's reaction to "email address" and how that in the fries is just so funny🤣
I think the one thing that is good in this game is the way it gives you hints on how to get the alternative endings. Not just in the ending cutscene but also in voicelines like when the coach first comes in after the basketball shots he says "can't you look at the clock?!" or something to that effect.
I love the second ending, its therapeutic to feel like if you had the chance you could go back and avoid something awful you could and can live freely at peace. Whilst not sure as much on the gameplay, the narrative on such a sadly prevalent topic I appreciate. Maybe some day people will be free from such traumatic acts💔
I was thinking the same! To me, because she started narrating to the present, it very much felt like those times you can't stop thinking about something horrible that happened in the past and wondering what you could have done differently to prevent it. I found it really interesting from that perspective.
Hey John, being able to hide indefinitely until the timer runs out is a glitch. When your character starts breathing heavily at 40:27 it means she's panicking, which is always supposed to happen after a few minutes in hiding. That's how the coach finds you. Also the coach coming to the Karaoke bar is explained in the sequence with the photo: Moeka took the coach's picture after the assault, but he caught her sending it to you so he had to come to the karaoke bar presumably to keep you quiet. Another thing, this game really should have had better subtitles (or subtitles at all for the hiding segment), for one Moeka actually says "Don't touch me..." at 11:00, not just "Don't..." which has much creepier connotations. Also the coach says things like "You can't hide forever" and "I won't hurt you" as he looks for you. When the sirens appear he angrily says something like "I can't believe you called the cops!" Actually being able to read all this with subtitles might have made the ending segment more unnerving. Overall I liked this one a lot more than you did, the coach character didn't come off as try-hard to me and I think because some of the story elements made sense to me the first time round it was more effective. But I agree the gameplay was under-baked.
Yeaa you're right. I think what should happen is when Mira (the player) started breathing heavily, he is near. And when he come into the area where you are hiding, he should be able to find you as the normal flow of the game. But in John's stealth playthrough, Coach barged in to your room then leave immediately. Pretty sad that he had that glitch on his stealth playthrough :( the game looked weaker at that glitch - unlike with Gab's playthrough that she was found multiple times and able to explore the area and find stuff, etc. and yea, the subtitles must be available and complete. I was able to understand what the Japanese word throughout the game because of Gab's translation during her playthrough.
Yeah the lack of proper subtitles did this game dirty, I could only understand a bit because I'm used to watch anime 💀But for people without that knowledge the game doesn't hit the same... In any case, great concept, poor gameplay. The karaoke feels painful to even watch lol
@@turtlethatdreamstobeacheetah The reason she breathes heavily is because the game is coded to have her heart beat faster the longer you hide, thus forcing you to not hide the whole time or when she starts audibly freaking out, the coach is able to find her.
I respect that you’re not one of those incels who make fun of women and say it’s their fault for being taken advantage of. Thank you for being respectful to us r&pe victims.
Unfortunately, this is a very real, very prevalent problem in Japan, and let's not pretend it doesn't happen here as well. A lot of the time, adults will not take you seriously, and will side with the adult who assaulted you, so what's the point of even speaking out? It sucks. I don't think that game was tasteless, and this is coming from a survivor of CSA (not from a teacher, but still someone in a position of power).
@paravandroid I agree. Their other games also mentioned stalking and harassment/assault. Japan (and everywhere else really) has a huge problem with stalking too. Personally, I thought they handled these topics tactfully.
I think it was at the beginning of the MeToo movement here in the US, women in Japan started coming out, too. Constantly being stalked, harassed, groped on the train "accidentally" is a huge problem. Women just aren't taken seriously about this. I don't know how it is, now, but being stuck in the culture, I don't think it's changed too much. But I haven't heard anything about it, lately. Though other minority groups are getting treated just a tad bit better.
one of the things i love john wolfe for is his warnings on things- people don't do that enough man i really appreciate john for doing this because it saves me from an upset stomach and an unhappy brain :)
"bwue eyes white dwagon" is how joey wheeler would say it probably and I also like how the karoke employee is using her phone while NOT LOOKING at it when talking to you...that takes talent LOL
the coach is saying these before the lights go out: "i won't do anything to you, i promise. just come out"; "i know that you're in here"; "are you over here?" and "be a good girl, won't you?" and then after the lights go out: "do you think this is going to help you?" and then right before the cops come: "damn it, where are you? why did you call the police? shit!"
The developer with each game improves the models and the story. Also they make a large number of games. Big respect to them for that, and thanks to John for the walkthrough!
Not sure about improving the character model with every game cause I def prefered the ones in night delivery over the character graphics in the closing shift
The email address in the fries saying "yabai" which literally means "horrible" in the context of "oh no this is bad" is just too funny to me, the creep couldn't make himself look any worse than that (?)
This is a very good detail to include because it perfectly fits the red herring guy's narrative, with "yabai" meaning "this is bad" and youth's slang "yabai" meaning "this is cool".
@@mercadonor idk why but their games have scared me more than most games Ive seen people play have. Like Aka Monto. That game freaks me out with the chasing. And I like the style. But I can see why people think Chillas Art is overrated
@@cierranicole9951 I too think that some Chilla's Art games are good. I also liked Aka Manto and others. But I dont think they fit the "good dev" characteristic if one of every ten games is a good game. But that is just my take on it
this game was the scariest chilla's art game for me because it was so realistic. so many girls get abused by men in power and it's scary to think how many lives were ruined bc of it. im so unbelievably upset.
The Karaoke is the scariest in terms of story telling and bringing a realistic sensitive topic of women abuseel Though absolutely is terrible in terms of gameplay, so thats where the other games shine. Which, im somehow not surprised. A topic like this can sometimes be difficult to make a fun/engaging and terrifying experience outta so it hits the nail in telling but the way it performs is.... not very good
Dreaming Mary and Hikikomori have been two games that really captured the kind of effect and aftermath of SA I highly recommend if you need catharsis in weird games
I've really enjoyed watching Chilla's Art develop as a creator through your videos. I was impressed with "Closing Shift" for being an effective "barista simulator" wrapped in an oppressive atmosphere. But it was easy to miss subtitles discussing stalkers and creeps, so a lot of the horror got lost in translation. I think it may have been intentional, but I'm not sure. This one, to me, is a meditation on youth, innocence, and guilt. I feel like every choice was deliberately made, right down to ensuring Moeka had a very normal appearance. By the time you were going for ending 3 I recognized this game. It's "your best friend's SA story". If not your best friend, then your mom, your aunt, your grandma, your older sister. Sometimes it's you, telling the story about the time you should've left sooner, the time you should've been mean. It was 1 in 3 in 1985 - or around then, I got the statistic from the "survivor's handbook" my therapist told my mom to buy. 1 in 8 if you're male. And those numbers are just the filed police reports - actual incidents are far more common. I appreciate this game. I'm so glad there's an ending where you just go to karaoke with your friend and have a good time. And I'm glad there's the justice ending.. and the stabbing. I have to agree, the serious subject matter makes it more difficult to enjoy as a horror game. This game hits me at a level that evokes dread, shame, and disgust - which is a feat for any game - but it's not the enjoyable scares I wanted. I don't think it's a bad game - but i predict low sales numbers due to its seriousness. Your commentary on Chilla's Art games is such an excellent combo. You did good on the rhythm segments! Thank you for getting all the endings in this one in particular. Hopefully next time it'll be a slightly spookier monster.
The coach says something along the lines of "I'm not going to do anything" during the scene where you have to hide from him. He also says "I found you." After getting ending 1.
Chief coffee is supposed to be a parody of BOSS coffee, which is a common canned coffee sold in vending machines in Japan. Edit: After Moeka's call about the coach stopping her, how she's not coming, and her apologizing, I had a feeling that would be the ending. What makes Chilla's games superior to anything else in the genre right now is that it is all realistic situational horror about women's struggles. The reality of women being preyed upon is way scarier than any cheesy horror trope ever could be. Chilla continues to make not only great games but scary games.

Can I say this is the highest quality Chilla’s Art game we have gotten in a while? I disagree personally on the antagonist, I wish more games had real life scary characters that represent what people are terrified about actually happening to them. Does way more to scare me than a mystery ghost or whatever
The subject matter and story didn't bother me but the gameplay itself left much to be desired imo. It's cool they put so much effort into those multiple endings, which is something I hope they try again in a future game. I bought the game right away when it came out but refunded it when I discovered the chase sequence. I think they can do better on atmosphere and actual mechanics next time. I'm not a big fan of playing stealth games myself because I'm admittedly bad at action sequences. But that's also why I like some of their other games, because they don't require quick reflexes or tracking an enemy through a confined space.

I've seen another game play of this. John is missing a phone call from moeka. Her second phone call after letting Mira know that she was okay and was held up by the coach... is a phone call from her weeping and begging the coach not to touch her anymore. I'm not really sure why that phone call didn't appear in John's gameplay but that's kind of a key moment. It's actually that specific phone call that "moekas spirit " in Mira's dream was referring to when she said that "she called many times"
Really weird how it didn't trigger for him. A vital part of the entire game to be honest. Without it he had no context. It's better to get that part with the "wrong" translation and connect the dots in your head than not get it at all.
@@YourBestieTalexa If we're talking about the phonecall where Moeka is saying "don't come closer" & "don't touch me" it's been at the karaoke place in all the playthroughs I've watched

Appreciate what Chilla was trying to do with this entry. But the incidents with the protagonist naively consuming food she didn't know the origin of really took me out of the story and kind of undercut the message for me. I totally get why she didn't understand what was happening to Moeka, she's young and not everyone will immediately catch on that an authority figure is out to cause harm to others. But where I'm from, one of the first things girls are taught is to not accept or consume unverified food in public. These girls are in highschool right? It just feels incredibly stupid and it took me awhile to get back into the story after both those scenes. Maybe girls in Japan aren't given that lesson? I can totally accept there might be a cultural difference that is causing this issue - even if it doesn't really fix my problems with those two scenes. The rest is pretty spot on and I did appreciate the red herring with the creepy male employee. Hell, even her brushing it off as if nothing happened is often a coping mechanism other women use when they face these situations. I think if Chilla continues to refine their work the next game they make will be truly spectacular.
Maybe it's because I know humans do this, but I thought she was attacked by the stripey dude or some mugger in the street who took the chance. I just knew it was SOMEONE attacking her. Wouldn't have assumed it was a teacher but allos can be gross like that, getting into teaching positions to be around children. Turns out my middle school ICT teacher was one of them after me and my lot left. I hate it, evil allos be evil allos and we just have to lump it. They could just not. ¬_¬
Apparently things like leaving out free drinks next to vending machines out of kindness for strangers, and other people drinking it, was very common in japan until someone put poison in them. Its a culture in which people are trusting of strangers, and dont think anything wrong about food in public
Always grateful for your critical thinking about these games. I hope that makes sense, but I always like your ending thoughts. I agree that when handling more serious topics, anyone creating anything should be very careful with how it's executed. Anyway, always enjoy your videos and commentary.

hi john! you and gab are my favorite youtubers (: your content is amazing and i always enjoy the vibes. just want you to know how much you’re appreciated!!
A pattern I notice with Chilla's Art games is they always uses red herrings to hide the big reveal at the end. Like how here example is the guy who barged into your karaoke room.
While some Chilla’s Art games are better than others, they’re are always fun to play and I look forward to them. I like how many ending options this one had.
He's saying fairly generic bad guy things. I could hear: 'Where are you?', 'Are you in here?' , 'You're a good girl, come out, I won't hurt you' , 'Why?' , 'Found you/I see you!', 'It's useless trying to hide' and sometimes swearing.
In both this and the second episode of Fears to Fathom I found it really interesting how much more viscerally scared / tense I was compared to John (who is an empathetic and stand up guy from all appearances). It was incredibly uncomfortable the entire time, and when he said it was a leap of logic to be afraid of the Coach I was astonished because I was there from the time she got the picture. My experience with sexual assault is “minor” compared to many but it still really changes my own experience with these games and stories, for better or worse.
I have complicated feelings towards Chilla's Art games. On the positive, the stories are (almost) always engaging and interesting. I like that, often, their protagonists are everyday people who become embroiled in terrifying mysteries. Also, the design in the PS1 style is a cool aesthetic. On the critical, the gameplay is often janky. So much of the games just involve tedious tasks/busy work for the majority of it with the true action only coming in at the last act. I don't mind narrative driven stories but I wish they'd put more substance into the actual gameplay. I also feel like they often don't work out the kinks before they release them. More than anything, their games need a good polish and some more engaging gameplay. I respect the fact that they're a small operation though and it's not an easy task. I've noticed a big improvement in design in this game though so I hope more improvements will follow soon (particularly in regards to gameplay).
Seriously Johh. you need to be aware of just how air TIGHT that sweet n' sour Lonely Island reference was. I mean, you were razor sharp, *_swink swink_* , serrated-kind-of-fast, feel me? Christ Almighty Montycristo, that was fire. Nice work.
6:33 Suntory Chief drink is a nod to Suntory Boss Coffee in Japan, which uses the image of a confident Gentleman for its logo. You can buy it at any drink machine. You will be surprised to also find soup, hot cocoa and many more things at those machines in Japan.
Finished reading Convenience Store Woman recently, it made me think of Chilla’s Art sort of games such as Closing Shift. From the warning looks like this is going to be another similar sort of thing!
I like this part when the main character gets a call from her friend and definitely hears that she's in trouble and goes "I want to sing so badly right now" after that. WTF. Who on earth would react that way?
The part where the coach attacks her at the karaoke place really got me 😭 especially with the SA themes in this game, it’s something that’s so realistic and scary, you can really feel the panic in her movements.
The Chief Coffee vending machine is a parody of the Boss Coffee vending machine in Japan!!! A video course I did last year had us make a commercial for Boss Coffee so this made me weirdly happy XD
saw that comment that said moeka said "dont touch me" and then realizing the song in the karaoke is called "Ripe Fruit" and them being high schoolers is....horrid.
This feels like Chilla's attempt at Fears to Fathom, it's shorter, but I felt like the narrative was better, and I was more a fan of the evil coach rather than a lot of the loosely defined threats that are in some of their games.
I looked at their social media and I think (not sure) those games are made by just two brothers, wich I find really impressive. And I completly agree with your opinion on this one though. I feel like it doesn't take itself serious enough for this kind of subject, especially considering that in japan there is a serious issue with this kind of abuse. Compared to the other games I find the gameplay really weak and wonky even though I truly appriciate the split endings and the different area you get to see through them, even though it wasn't that much. I don't comment much anywhere but I appriciate and enjoy your videos for years now and your hair looks flawless, at least I told you this once now haha.
It's so irritating when movies have kids talk that way. It's cute or funny. It gets on your nerves with how annoying it is. One of those tropes that people can't stand and wish weren't a thing
i appreciate how they try to bring awareness with this game about the issue, capturing how the horror feels like and the trauma that follows. broke my heart on every "bad" ending. made me realize too, there's no really good ending: even when they successfully going to the karaoke and having a good time, it means the predator never gets caught, and he's still around.

When I watched Gab play this, she translated what Moeka said on the phone not just as "don't", but as "don't touch me", which makes the entire call so much creepier and the fact that the player character doesn't immediately go to check on her (or at least call someone about it) insane.
Do you enjoy watching the same game over and over played by different people? Sounds...odd!
@@dodogamarama2294 truth be told
I've heard it's prolific in Japan for men who grope women on public transport. So you know if that's true?
@@Kairii-Kylie True enough that some trains had/have women only cars.
@@skylarkblue1 it's bad enough to have ever happened. But for it to still be prevalent in this day and age is horrific
I'm glad that with this and the one in the cafe Chilla is telling some stories where we can see our very real horror experiences presented in an respectul non-sensationalist way
tbh, the moment the game just let player go alone leaving her friend is already a red flag to me.
@@neardarkroad1347 yeah, you're probably right
@@sofiipote7 if I might add, the game did have a foreshadowing of player will be alone from the game menu itself tho.
above "The Karaoke" title or following that title (if you look at this vid title) there are Japanese Katakana read as Hito Kara.
Gab Smolders managed not to get found whilst hiding?
So John just got lucky the first time?

Apparently things like leaving out free drinks next to vending machines out of kindness for strangers, and other people drinking it, was very common in japan until someone put poison in them. Its a culture in which people are trusting of strangers, and dont think anything wrong about food in public

Nice work.

Suntory Chief drink is a nod to Suntory Boss Coffee in Japan, which uses the image of a confident Gentleman for its logo. You can buy it at any drink machine. You will be surprised to also find soup, hot cocoa and many more things at those machines in Japan.
love chilla’s art! excited to see this
Finished reading Convenience Store Woman recently, it made me think of Chilla’s Art sort of games such as Closing Shift. From the warning looks like this is going to be another similar sort of thing!
Did you like the book ? I just looked at the summary, it seems interesting.
@@Em-fz5uh it was interesting, I recommend
John making Lonely Island references honestly made my night. My favorite streamer ever. 🤣
loving the hair, john!
That was really fun! Thank you for playing, John!
I've been hearing your "hey guys" intro for almost a decade now. It lives rent free in my head
I like this part when the main character gets a call from her friend and definitely hears that she's in trouble and goes "I want to sing so badly right now" after that. WTF. Who on earth would react that way?
You had a much easier time with the hiding section than gabs haha
The part where the coach attacks her at the karaoke place really got me 😭 especially with the SA themes in this game, it’s something that’s so realistic and scary, you can really feel the panic in her movements.
John I can't tell you how much I appreciate the content warning at the beginning. Thank you for including that.
I’m digging your baby Kaiba impression. 😂
I'm just taking a moment to note (and envy!!) how fast John's hair grows!
This feels like Chilla's attempt at Fears to Fathom, it's shorter, but I felt like the narrative was better, and I was more a fan of the evil coach rather than a lot of the loosely defined threats that are in some of their games.
John's voice/tone makes these playthroughs so entertaining
The bwue eyes white dwagon needs to go into the end of year montage
It's so irritating when movies have kids talk that way. It's cute or funny. It gets on your nerves with how annoying it is. One of those tropes that people can't stand and wish weren't a thing
Not gonna lie, when that dude shot into the karaoke room halfway through the song, it creeped me out more than I think it should have
Appreciate that warning at the beginning.
Thanks for the content warning, John! As someone with PTSD, I really appreciate it!
i appreciate how they try to bring awareness with this game about the issue, capturing how the horror feels like and the trauma that follows. broke my heart on every "bad" ending. made me realize too, there's no really good ending: even when they successfully going to the karaoke and having a good time, it means the predator never gets caught, and he's still around.
