IMO the art issues have been less about style and more about core design decisions like model design, world building, etc. The hedgehog is a great example. Since day 1 of the new model release, people have been saying they don’t enjoy playing with it, that it’s awkward, and not inspiring, etc. But FG hasn’t iterated on it again. This isn’t “stylization” it’s core design decision making, and potentially an unwillingness/inability to hear the “feedback behind the feedback.” 😢
I think that's the sort of thing this is intended to deal with, actually. "Style" can mean different things to different people, but in this case it sounds like there's going to be work done to make the Infernals more visually unified as a faction, maybe add a bit of unique flair so stuff feels Infernal rather than just sort of generically "evil"-flavored... I agree that the hedgehog needs a new design, but I disagree that the problem is disconnected from style issues!
I largely agree with you here. I suppose chasing most of the feedback around the art style is bound to be difficult since the vast majority of it isn't particularly constructive, just things like ''the game looks too childish, like a mobile game'' etc.
+1 buildings, unit design, maps all need eye catching design. They are just not attractive enough to make rts fans or new comers to think “ooooh this game looks really cool”.

the low player number is a result of there not being anything for the casuals to play IMO casual players don't want to play 1v1, the campaign doesn't sound playable, and coop becomes repetitive eventually, not to mention being a game mode uncannily similar to some MOBAs such that players may feel like they'd be better off playing actual MOBAs than an RTS trying to be one there's no magic bullet solution to this besides just finishing a few actually good campaigns and maybe getting a good team v team mode going. I do hope the art improvements brings some more people across. After playing a lot I've really come to like the units and appreciate the design, I think there is a lot more personality than people give it credit for, so I hope its enhancements not an overhaul. That is the best news I've heard coming from this game yet. The current cartoon style looks like a cheap browser game. Somehow visually it looks worse than Warcraft3, let alone Starcraft2.
I think the way they can come back is to finish the 3v3 gameplay and invite popular casual game stramers. It will bring back players if they deliver and market it well.
Even if the list of the upcoming changes would be in the game now I would still play Age 2 instead of Stormgate, although I'm a big fan of the Starcraft and Warcraft universe. Think about why. In these times it is not enough to copy SC2 or WC3 and to just change/improve minor things. You have to think about why people play C&C Generals, why people play Age 2, Age 4, Age of Mythology. And when you ask yourself these questions you will find out that these games have some really good mechanics that SC2 and WC3 don't have. Normal people, causal players that play SC2 or WC3 competetive almost not exist. They all play fun maps or Commander mode. Why? Because of the bigger diversity. Why so many people play "Age of"-Games? Because of the bigger diversity through procedural generated maps, different bioms, more Civs that are even as different as the civs in SC or WC, but some people won't see that. For example most Civs in Age 4 have a totally different eco-system. Some Civs have walls, some not. Some Civs need to build houses (depot, pylon, overlord) and some civs have no need for it. So SC and WC are not the games with the most different factions anymore. The mongols civ is more different to the chinese civ than Protoss is different to Terran. The eco-system, procedural generated maps, biomes, walls etc. make the "Age of"-Games so much more diverse than SC, WC or SG. And that makes so much more fun. Especially in 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4. So have fun with your team multiplayer games in SC2 and StormGate. =) While you looking for fun in these games I will have fun with Age like the last 25 years. Not because it is Age, but because it is a better rts with better mechanics. And I say that because I want Stormgate become a good rts, but when most people are so blind for the real improvements and have no idea what is really good in other rts Stormgate will never be a good rts. Age and C&C Generals are not good because of their name. They are good because of the mechanics. Doesn't matter which game has it.

The Multiplayer NEEDS to do well and the game needs to be out with all unit TIERS as well. Very rarely players won't like a Campaign mode. Companies usually nail this pretty easily. It's the main core design choices and how the game FEELS and PLAYS that makes it a classic and makes sure people come back to it after they uninstall it the first time (This happened to me with Diablo and Starcraft games I've come back to time and time again over the years because they feel so special). I am not sure about a change in the Art style. Sometimes the annimations get too much especially in coop and you cant see any details anymore because everything is blinking and shimmering. I hope they can finish what they started. They're a really ambitious team with great aspirations around the game and community. I think those ambitions have led to some poor decisions, though. Too much scope too fast, building the game in public (and the public can't handle that we've learned). I'm rooting for them, but it feels like an uphill climb now.
It's true my friend. I really don't see what the problem is with being part of a game that is in progress. They have always said that the rts community is made up of veterans but in reality most of them have childish behavior where they don't even understand what an EA is.
Great to hear they are going to work on the art. It is one of the weekest things about the game and is putting many people off. If they continue with current art direction I can't see the game becoming successful in the future. Also, the fact they have in-game store since day 1 and try sell shit to people who already backed the game and support the studio by providing feedback for free is just absurd.
I think the game director overselled the game saying that SG is the next gen RTS and will be the RTS game to go for the next 10 years. So it's not very fair to say that people were expecting too much.
People don't know what childlike graphics are, I don't want a more realistic artstyle because it's been done. The art style they have now is great and it will start to lose it's personality. I don't understand why people want a clone, stylised soft visuals are better for this game.
@@mann0311 But that's objectively just not true though. A lot of people have insecurities and random biases that aren't really present in other genres of games but when you come down to it there's no proof that it's the visual language that is an issue. Because there's so many benefits to this stylisation and for future proofing the game, plus to it's biggest competitor it's already ahead visually, it's not a good take based on where they were for early access and people's expectations, going the other way is objectively worse.
@DrawAndErase literally half of the discourse has been about the art direction in all forums especially on early access. Just cause you're putting your head in the sand doesn't mean its not true dude.
@@mann0311 Again, looking good for people with insecurities and biases and objectively speaking whether the art direction is actually a problem is different. I've been discussing the semiotics of their visual language for awhile, the issues of how in game development visuals come last in the process, but in terms of graphical fidelity and engine the game will look really good in the end and it's starting to show that off as the developers have gone backwards to pass lighting and shader updates. Also look at the benefits of stylization and how it helps with creating timeless visuals, exaggeration for fantasy styles = better animations in terms of squash and stretch, anticipation so it's fluid and seems responsive. How you don't need to rely on realism to make creative lighting, shadows and silhouette decisions based on conception rather than reality, performance benefits. To some stylisation suggests immaturity but it's not true, but people not exposed to it certainly think that way but that's again a bias which is not rooted in reality. Anyway, my head is not in the sand, I'm a graphic artist in industry and I've spent time trying to assimilate why things are negative and if it is actually 'bad' because it's an interesting topic and part of my job, though I don't work for Frost Giant. People will always have opinions, doesn't mean they're right if their arguments are emotionally based rather than objectively within the play space. Even if we're looking at the hierarchy of units based on the thematic play space they do actually fit.
it'd be a waste to completely revamp it I think. The sound really really needs attention, the pathfinding and unit attack priority also, and we need the rest of the units and abilities. It still doesn't feel like a complete game. Once the editor is out that will also be huge.
Yeah I doubt they would, more likely steer the ship towards something slightly more realistic/shiny? I think what they really need is more lore/story/backstory to everything and flesh out the art from that.
@ I don’t mean literally, I mean don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Make it more of a spiritual successor in look and feel. The creep camps change the vibe
@@geneanthony3421 Ah I see. I fear there is little reason to do that, because Starcraft 2 is still one of if not the most played rts these days. Trying to replicate that likely won't succeed. The devs have said from the beginning that they wanted the game to be of a much slower pace and take elements (like creeping) from Warcraft 3. Honestly I'm just curious what the game is going to be like once all units are implemented and how the 3 vs 3 mode will turn out.
Blizzard could just keep making mission packs and commanders and I'd be showing up every time. But they won't. And they probably never will because one cosmetic in WoW made more money than all of wings of liberty.

I feel like I'm playing a "Little Tikes RTS"
I hope they don't radically change the art style. I've grown fond of it over the months...
it'd be a waste to completely revamp it I think.
Let's hope the new art direction can make this game look decent.
Just make SC3. Nobody else is. That's what people wanted.
they don't own the ip
@@Bananenbauer123 SC2 is popular, but it's done as far as content. There are no new missions or commanders.
Blizzard could just keep making mission packs and commanders and I'd be showing up every time. But they won't. And they probably never will because one cosmetic in WoW made more money than all of wings of liberty.
Don't give a damn about the art, just give me a freaking units/resources lost tab in the replay UI!!!!
The problem about art direction for me is UNIT AND BUILDING SCALING. I wanted to see a a bit immersive style than 20 year old style to sell the game
Big scam
