I am not really interested in growing bonsai at the moment, but one day I clicked one of your videos just to see what it was like and I keep watching because these videos are so dang relaxing! Keep up the awesome content!
Ok I have to ask, why no interest? I ask because if you think it needs to be super difficult or time consuming, this isn’t always the case. If you have 200 maples, yes, you’ll spend a lot of time. If you have one or two trees like a Chinese elm, seriously not a big deal. Also you can even go the route of a mini jade tree… virtually no time required! Anyway, just throwing that out there.
Yes, but just start some bonsai for the future letting the trunks grow and some pruning. The finer points will come in time. In five to ten years this small effort will be so rewarding.
I can't help thanking you again, Peter. No stereotypes ever and you teach us again and again to respect the individuality of each tree whenever styling a bonsai.
Dont apologize for the rain. Its actually quite soothing as you speak. I almost go into a meditative state. Here in SW Va, its been in the upper 90's for weeks, with absolutely no rain. The grass crunches under your feet, leaving foot prints in the dead grass. All my small trees are under 40% shade cloth so as to NOT burn, and not dry out too much before I get home to water. I am watering even my Vinka vines. Never seen these start dying off from the heat like this. We are DESPERATE for rain at this point.
I used the style principles I’ve learned from you on my container grown Autumn Moon maples - just a little trim, because I don’t really know what I’m doing yet, just to let some light in, and taking crossed branches away - and I’m just delighted by the beauty and elegance just that much created in them. And yes, I once was a hairdresser, and it really felt very similar to cutting hair. Thank you.
I have upright and weeping Japanese maples in my landscape and in containers. Watching your videos have greatly increased my pruning skills. I’ve heard that only 1/3 of a tree should be pruned at a time. Sometimes I’m afraid to do all that I’d like. I’m not the original owner of my home, and I only learned about pruning about 4 years ago, so there’s still a lot to correct. Thank you for making the videos.
Dear Herons Bonsai Team, Dear Peter, thanks for the many videos. I learned a lot from it. I look forward to every new video Greetings from Germany Franz
Japanese red maple is what got me into bonsai i was given a seed kit for my birthday it looked so good on the box I now have red maple cuttings from my grandmother propagating I couldn't wait I plan on getting more bonsai they look beautiful!!
Indeed, in no competition with anyone. Bonsai is essentially art. And as far as I’m concerned, there’s no room for competition in the art of bonsai, only room for beauty and admiration for each other’s work ☯️
Wonderful video! I'm new top bonsai and really enjoyed see how you shaped the tree. Looking forward to working on my deshojo maple this weekend. Thank you!
I always like your decision on sometimes not following the rules of a specific design but using the natural beauty and shape of the tree. In the wild trees have many shapes that are all beautiful. I can't wait until February when you repot that tree and hope you show that one also. Thanks for taking time and sharing these videos.
19:23 before. Great video Boys. Peter you are a machine and totally right. You can do in 30 min what others would take quadrupled that time. Keep it up boys.
Great work to reduce the density of the leaves and reshape the tree. What is the date of pruning? It helps to get the information on the tree growth. Thanks.
This form is very natural for maples. I am not sure that I have ever seen a single trunk maple tree with horizontal branches and a conical, Christmas Tree shape in nature, but I have seen many with two or more large branches growing upwards. Actually, there are several growing in my yard. If you go to the Park nearby that has some primary succession native Acer sp. growing in its forest, you will find many. If Bonsai is supposed to represent a mature tree growing in nature then this is the correct form for a maple tree.
Found a few maple seeds that have blown into my yard. I have now idea what maples they are, I have searched the neighbourhood around me and cant find one any where near me. Time will tell as I am planting them, hope they sprout.
Such an elegant tree. I do love maple. I have 12 maples of my own but not as beautiful as this one. I wish you can help me make trim them to half as beautiful as this one.
19:28 You put the before text on the after shot! Anyway, it has a lovely structure. Conventional or not. I get the appeal of a single trunk but the lines in this tree are quite pleasing.
Very nice, I know what you mean about taking a long time to chose what branch to cut ! Have you seen the bonsais on the Olympics behind the commentators ? Very nice too !
Question Peter... I have several Tridents. One tree has three trunks that separate from the main trunk about 5 inches from the nebari into three. I've been contemplating taking off two of them, because as you said, it seems to be more pleasing to have just one trunk. I've been thinking and thinking about it. If I decide to, when it the best time of year to do such a drastic cut of two trunks? Up till now, I have done most deep structure pruning in late winter.
Hi Peter, I am looking for my first bonsai. I really want a maple but I'm scared of Verticillium. Is it possible to prevent it? or should I get a juniper instead?
Hi, great video as always. do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions what varieties that suitable in tropical countries?, i have always loved JBP and maple but sadly they're subtropical plant..and i really like trees that have good bark and interesting leaves shape and colour. i planted JBP from seed and they're doing well now, almost 2 months old, but i'm sure they will not grow perfectly in tropical area.
Peter, next year when you re-pot will you do further branch pruning to lighten the branch structure even more or will you wait until the summer or leave the branches after the root prune for the tree to recover fully?
Thanks for answer, the tree my wive bought was crafted. The crafting looks ugli so i airleard the tree, the roots starts to Grow.Mr Peter Magic Spaghnum Moos trick. Thanks for your videos. Greats from germany
Mr. Chan, I have started a few maples from seed and they are about two feet tall now. I want to thicken the trunks so when is the best time to head the trunks back? Thanks for the vids
Hello Herons bonsai fans, I have a question. I recently planted some Japanese maple seeds, and one of those seeds turned out to be albino! I've read it doesn't stand a chance because it lacks the ability to photosynthesize. Is there anyway I could keep it alive? I'm holding out hope. 😟
@@starkieable According to an article I read in a Spanish magazine, Bonsai Pasion nº 54, it is about D glucose, which is the same as that used for physiological serum.
