- This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan) …. our 50th walk in this particular series. In this episode I take a 4.5 mile circular walk from Janesmoor Pond (located to the South East of the village of Fritham). Grid Reference : SU246134
I start of with a short detour to investigate a livestock drinking trough with an interesting history & a Bronze age barrow that has an unusual addition to it (!) before heading back to start my walk at Janesmoor Pond.
I head South, to the side of the Kings Garn Gutter Inclosure, to the Long Beech Inclosure where I go through the campsite (which was closed at the time of filming) to head East through some stunning woodland.
When I reach the Coalmeer Bottom stream, I head North towards Bramshaw Golf Course - the oldest golf course in Hampshire. My route then takes me on a mini circular walk around the Salisbury Trench Inclosure before heading back to my original starting point at the pond (passing by a Pony Pound and some evidence of the old RAF Stoney Cross Airfield along the way).
Once again the weather was glorious for the walk.

you are certainly lucky with the weather on your walks. What a lovely day to walk the forest. We look forward to doing this one at some stage!
It is a popular area for visitors but once you get away from the car park & pond, there are some super wooded areas to enjoy.

Thank you Dave for another great bit of history of the New Forest. I am familiar with a lot of the Janesmoor pond area but not the parts you have shown us here. I will go and explore your route. Great story about the golf course. Silly pastime.
Thank you. It is a lovely area for a walk - I dare say with the recent rain, conditions underfoot now may be a little wetter than it was when I filmed in the Summer!
@@DaveFord Yes it can get a bit muddy up there, as a runner yourself you may have heard of the CC6 league, I used run those and Janesmoor pond was one of the last runs of the season normaly in January very cold and wet.
The pond was a lot higher as well.

We have had some similar experiences here in Nova Scotia with places being nearly deserted because of restrictions...does give an area a whole different feel, but sure makes for pleasant walking and especially filming...thanks for continuing to share your neck of the woods...
Yes it was unusual. Whilst a number of the "New Forest" camp sites were closed during the Summer, other parts of the Forest (especially some of the Forestry Commission car parks) were very busy with day trippers.
Dave, I notice that there are never many people around on your walks, usually you seem to have the place to yourself? I can only assume your walks take place quite early in the mornings? When we visit the New Forest the place is usually packed, especially at weekends and school holidays.
I do tend to film early morning if I can and try and avoid the "busy" times (which has been a challenge this year with more people, it seems, visiting the New Forest than ever before!). But I do tend to find that you only need to walk half a mile or so away from the car parks and by following some of the "less obvious" paths you can often you get peace and tranquility.
Dave. I have only recently discovered your series of New Forest Walks, I think I have watched them all now. I too have an interest in the old airfields, particularly Stoney Cross. I have been doing some research/surveying on Stoney Cross that you may find interesting. I was wondering if we could meet up and I could show you what I have.
