If you decide to adopt the dog, YOU train them. You give them time to adjust, be patient with them, and train them.
It's NOT a shelter's job to train. They don't have the resources. That's a completely unreasonable expectation.

Exactly. Some of these people go to shelters because they are cheaper than rescues but they also expect all the perks some rescues offer. The rescue I work with charges around 500 for their dogs but they are all trained by their fosters they go through vetting and treatments and are chipped and fixed.

@@bluejew6969 You know, we all have a tendency to assume what people mean. This is on both sides. I'm certain no one is lying. Perhaps matters can be cleared up if everyone sits down and talks.
But, above all, the dog is the most important thing here. He has apparently already been through a lot, traumatized, and he doesn't need to go through any more. His sense of good will/happiness/of being cared for and loved by all needs to be preserved and protected. Perhaps all can work together toward a common goal for the best benefit of Wesley. 🐱🐶🐕‍🦺🐈‍⬛ ❤❤❤

My girl was feral until she was 12. She was TNR’d because she was deemed unadoptable. I fed her for awhile on the street and then snagged her so I could get her in for a vet check. I crated her in a secluded room in my home and figured if it was just a home base for bad weather and night safety, then that was fine. It took about a week for her to warm up enough to feel comfortable about of the crate, about a month to start exploring, and to let me hold her, and about 6 months before she trusted my husband. Four years later, we can both scoop her up out of a dead sleep and have her immediately purring and rubbing. She has no interest in the outside world and slaps us for food in the morning😂.

Wesley looks to be a Catahoula Hound dog. I've had several. They're very sensitive and extremely intelligent. If people don't know what they are or how they behave, they can get the wrong impression from them. They're working dogs, herding, hunting and protecting their humans. They're NOT for everyone and people need to understand the breed. People often confuse them with Australian shepherds because of their coloring and tendency to have blue eyes. But they're a very different breed. I love them and hope to always have one.

I adopted a male Siberian Husky 2-1/2 yrs old that had been running wild after being in 6 other locations, fosters, adopted and returned numerous times, in rescues. They had to trap him to then take him to a rescue. When we got him I told him this would be his last and final and loving home. He was the 6th Siberian Husky we had adopted through the years. The poor little man, it took him six months before he would give even me his eyes in trust. He was the master of escape and deception, proving what a very very smart boy he was.
I have found a dog that has been bounced around or that survived on its own has learned how to survive without humans. Patience, creating communication, trust, and consistency with our boy let him know he was finally safe.
Please let the dog you adopt feel safe and give them the much needed time they need to get there!❤

What the?!Part of building a relationship with a dog is to train them. It's a rewarding bonding experience for animal and human. I have learned as much about myself as my dogs have learned about good pup etiquette probably. Anyone who adopts a rescue with expectations that the pup is turnkey is NOT the right person and would likely return or mistreat the animal out of frustration. And that would shut the animal down even more.

I'm glad that they came, and I'm glad that they realized that it wouldn't be a good fit rather than take Wesley home for a day or two and then have to bring him back which would have been more dramatic for him. It's also important to understand that shelter animals are going to be on a broad spectrum of training and behavior, in the limits that the shelter has to work within.

Geez about that family who was going adopt and didn’t feel as though he was acting right. ANY time you adopt or LOOK to adopt a dog and especially if you’ve adopted before, you have to KNOW or ASSUME there will be an adjustment period! It could be long or not. Every dog is different. And to not have taken the time for him, makes me believe that family didn’t know much about dogs and wasn’t right for him anyway. NO dog who has been in a shelter is the “perfect” dog because of the uncomfortableness OF being in a shelter.

We don’t always know what they’ve experienced in the past. I feel he’s never been shown affection.
