  • Broke down and bought a second X7 unit. This X758 will serve along side the 2007 X748 to help us care for our place. I will be doing comparison videos between the machines as we go and providing commentary on why I bought an X758 over all the other choices.

    I purchased a X758 in 2019 with a 54 inch HC deck out the door it was $14,600, I also purchased the seat cover and the front grill guard. It has been trouble free and a fantastic machine. The aluminum rims became standard in 2019, they were an option before that. Mine also has the auto connect deck.

    Glad you explained your reasoning for buying new over used. I think that's really valuable information that a lot of other channels don't go into. Thanks for the video

      I think its a really important point. I think I can say that I don't have a problem buying used machines.... but when you get into the newer stuff, its hard to justify used.

    If you look at the tach you will see at the top of the RPM range is a small squared "C" shaped icon you can use the mower at any of the three RPM bars within that icon at the top of the RPM range.

    Congratulations. Nice machine! I would say if you got this under msrp with 0% you did well. For those that don’t know 90% of 0% interest deals are gimmicks. You end up paying the interest up front by paying close to full msrp vs. someone who pays cash. Ask me how I know🤔. I bought a new Roadglide a couple years ago. 0% interest was the clincher. I signed and then the salesman was honest and said to me, there is no such thing as an interest free loan. The interest is built into the price you paid, in affect you paid all the interest up front. Again nice machine and I would say you bought it right.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, often times the interest charge is built into the price of the machine and often times when you ask there is a cash discount. So many of these machines are sold on the 0% plan that there is no cash discount currently.

      Correct, I can never recall all the stats off the top of my head. I should have looked them up.... BUT, the grass needed to be mowed and someone was waiting to use their new machine. and was not excited that she was having to use the old junky X748. LOL! I threw the correct models in the video as a graphic line and I will get into the engine differences in a future video. My plan is to evaluate the 3TNA72UJ all the way to the 3TNM74.

      I think that would be a great video to make. In the next few weeks I am going to compare the 455, X748, and X758, I can certainly work my way. A comparison with a 318 might be a little unfair due to size but we can certainly make it.

      In total we mow about 7.5 acres. We spend anywhere from 3-6 hours a week mowing, depending on the machine of choice and the grass condition. Rainy years we mow a lot! A few years ago we clocked over 400 hours of time between the 1445, X748, and a couple other machines.

    I agree with the money and financing. I just bought a new sub compact massey ferguson to mow and snow blow with as it's similar size to the x series. I picked it up for 0 percent. No reason to spend my money when they are giving it to me with their money.

    Your justification for buying new translates well to other series JDs. I have an X3 series for a residential lot, which is a bit much in the eyes of many, but I'd like to upgrade to at least a newer version. Mine is a 2007 model but it only has 460 hours on it. It's in fairly good condition, stored in a heated garage, with a solid hood and a replacement seat. My reason for upgrading has more to do with deck servicing issues than the mower itself. I'm 72 yrs old and don't like to crawl around on the ground as much as I used to.

  • @The1025RChannel
    @The1025RChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For just a mower I don't know why anyone would buy a 1 series. I'm sure the x758 makes a better mower. The 1 series has additional weight that just isn't needed for mowing.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of folks do it and it has always been a head scratcher to me...... I can't say much about weight though, since my main mower is pushing 2,400 lbs.

      That’s really hard to pin point. Location, condition, size of deck, condition of deck, add on and other attachments, and other things really affect value. Just based on a deck and 1300 hrs I’d put it in the range of $3,500-7,000

      Thank you! For me there is a very important distinction between daily user and collection. I don't expect any machine in my collection to meet everyday demands of taking care of our place. I do expect machines like the 1445, X748, and 4066R to meet the demands of yard care with no exceptions. We needed an additional mower and I took advantage of an opportunity. Yes, I do have a wife, that has no interest in being in a video. Yes, she is very cool and I like her a little bit.... maybe!

  • @mueckenhoeffer
    @mueckenhoeffer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    New over used, I certainly understand, but price point plays an important factor.
    I'm getting ready to get out of the 318 business, and was told by my 318 owning neighbor that my asking price was his "new" price in 1986. I reminded him 318s have a fact list that puts Chuck Norris' fact list to shame, so are worth every penny, and a potential buyer should feel privileged I would condescend to consider allowing him or her to buy it. The $1,500 to $2,500 you see 24+ year old 318s go for is a sum most people in need of a garden tractor can pull together out of pocket. But, it's a stupid price if you think about it - old and worn machine selling for what it went for new!
    $13,000 plus for a new X7xx is a sum most would finance. And why wouldn't one finance it for free, since most dealers won't offer a cash discount?
    My question is where would the X7xx series fit in my needs? If just mowing grass, and I had to have a John Deere, the S170 for $2,600 at a box store would do just fine. And I could add Field Trax tires, load them with WWF, add wheel weights, suitcase weights, etc. It will run a snow blower, push a snow blade, tow any number of rear mount things, etc. Sure, in a short time, one might add a few thousand more in implements and upgrades, but you do that with anything. The $2,600 price is again, something most people with a yard large enough to warrant a ride-on mower can probably afford without financing. And if I took care of it as well as my dad took care of stuff, I'd get 25 years out of it with no problem. (truth about neighbor who bought his 318 in 1986 - he's on engine #3, so premium lawn/garden tractors are not bullet proof).
    So, I've got $13K+ (in pocket or borrowed) to commit to mostly mowing grass. Am I enough of a JD fanboy to justify that? Or do I have enough slopes/mud, etc. to need AWD? Would it instead not be wiser to go with a 1023E for pretty much the same price?
    Not trying to start an internet argument or anything, just trying to learn your thoughts for the x758 versus the 1023e (or similar SCUT).

    so refreshing to see someone who knows how to do a REAL video about a lawn tractor for a change. These days, most videos will name the lawn tractor in the title for click bait, and then for 95% of the video, the camera will be focused on the guy's face instead of the tractor, he'll talk about himself most of the time, and on top of that they play shitty computerized music through the entire video! This video was done 100% right! You named the model tractor in the title, kept the camera focused on the tractor the whole time, and talked about the tractor the whole time giving all good information and no bullshit. GREAT VIDEO! And thank you for restoring my faith in the human race because I've been getting pretty depressed lately with all the other stupid shitty tractor videos out there pissing me off and insulting my intelligence.
    I do have to say though I can't wait to see your next video to answer this big question. You said you bought this tractor for mowing only. My first thought was isn't that overkill? I wouldn't buy the X758 for mowing unless I had a lot of killer hills and ditches to mow. If I'm just going to do mowing, I wouldn't go higher than the 500 series tractors.

      Everyone has opinions. My opinion is the alloy rims are a bit ridiculous, your opinion is clearly opposite, nothing wrong with that. I pick things apart because if I just gushed over everything I use it wouldn't be very helpful to people. What do I not know about? Not much to know about rims on a garden tractor. They used to be steel and now they are alloy rims. It seems as though based on my research, that the alloy rims are nothing but a flash factor or potentially serve as a weight saving factor. Based on shipping weights of the previous steel rims the alloy rims save about 5 lbs (I don't have my notebook in front of me with the part numbers and weight at the moment so I am going off memory). That 5 lbs could be important for the overall weight of the machine?

    I wish I could own a dozen or more JD Mowers. I got one an L120 and it was bought non-running with numerous problems, that I almost have completely fixed. To drop >16K on a redundant machine -- well I'd have to be quite wealthy to even contemplate such a foolish thing.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s all about perspective. I have two hobbies - my John Deere collection and our place. The X758 in this case is not redundant. There is no one size fits all machine for 7.5 acres of mowing, snow removal, and other tasks. I just happen to enjoy John Deere stuff. Much like based on your username you enjoy riding CanAms. While I find any form of two or three wheeled over the road transportation to be dangerous, ill conceived, and a waste of money I don’t often voice my opinion on the matter, because that would be foolish and millions of people love motorcycles.

      This one happened to be in stock and unsold on the dealer lot. I got lucky! There are a lot of folks that are happy with CTC loaders.

    I wish I could find a dealer around here that would give us a price like that - Here in WA state they are quoting us higher prices than what they have listed on the JD website.

      I have seen this several times in the last few months. I think that is just a function of supply and demand. Right now there is a lot of demand and supply is very low due to various factors like worker shortages, material shortages, and shipping being slowed. Don't be afraid to call dealers in other states, any dealer should be happy to sell a machine to anyone! A trip to pick a machine up will cost you gas money but in the end it can save you a lot of money!

      @TomMarecek 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mmrbeef Thank you for the reply - you are right about the supply and demand, that is what the dealers told me also. Just to clarify, when you said "$13950 as it sits" does that mean all inclusive with the deck and all costs or did you have to pay tax on top of that? I'm definitely willing to drive to save some money and I will be checking with other dealers in the surrounding states but if I'd have to drive all the way to the east coast it would probably not be worth it.

    Did they make a X758 with a mechanical dash?

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mechanical from the stand point of needles and regular gauges? Yes, the early X758's had similar instrumentation to the older X748's. Off the top of my head I cannot remember when the change was made.

    Those plastic covers actually do come off, it makes cleaning the deck a lot easier.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I am planning a video on the deck by itself. It is interesting how Deere has fixed some of the issues the early 54 and 60HC decks had.

    • @capti443
      @capti443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To remove the covers, the deck needs to be fully lowered to the ground, then they pop off by pulling up on the front of each. They have a two-ear retainer at the back end. They hinge off of that.

    Congratulations on the new machine!!!! I have an X739 (gas, 4WD & 4WSteer) that I got in April 2021. I really like the tighter turning radius that the 4WS gives (not present on your X758). Wondering if you looked at 4WSteer? .... Your comment on the front wheel speed auto adjustment when turning is spot-on... it works flawlessly!

    If I was financing a lawnmower I'd say you should probably wait on that. And if the excuse is well why not finance If it's zero% If the 13 or 14k not being in your pocket effects you that much that should tell you something.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone marches to the beat of their own drummer. This was my thought process on buying an X758. If you have 14-15k sitting in you pocket and you go pay cash for a mower the opportunity cost when financing is 0% and ROI is a paltry 6% annually is $4,700+ over 5 years. Why would you not finance it and use cash flow to pay for it vs using capital? Overuse of financing and exhaustion of cash flow is what gets people into trouble. Once you get into higher interest rates then you really have to pay attention to the numbers.

    Think this would be a good hoarders show. You could literally use a different riding mower for all grass cutting days of the year on your property, LOL.
