- I have FINALLY gotten around (as requested) to covering the TDI line from KABAR. It’s hard not to love these staples in the edc fixed blade self defense world. #kabar #selfdefense #tacticalknife

I was a patrol sergeant back in my 20s and carried one of these. I have to say, you nailed it with your analysis. I tried a few different methods but ended up carrying it off hand tucked behind my taser. The idea was if someone tried to pry my gun out of my holster I could push down on it for retention and use the kabar to force distance. Awesome little knife but now that those days are behind me, I could never find a carry method I was happy with. I actually picked up an el nino based on your recommendation!
Shivworks Clinch Pick 2.0 is the best
A few years before I retired our Officers carried this knife. I carried on the strong side due to fact of elbow pain. We were also trained to disable the person. As in the shoulder with the nerves. Good knife.
Glad you posted this review. The TDK is still more affordable as a quality made knife than the custom made pieces that seem to get endorsements but cost in the. $200 range. For what it is designed for, it is good to carry for a variety of activities. I have the LDK variant. Again, the price is more than reasonable for a quality piece of steel.
I was a patrol sergeant / range officer and carried one of these after attending a training school on weapon retention. We were shown how much faster it was to deploy than the folders we all had clipped to our pockets. The sheath fit behind my magazine carrier on my belt, was out of the way but quick to grab.
Great video, you're analysis is right on.
Thanks so much! Great hearing from an officer 🙂👍
I carry this in the small of my back on my belt at work as a rural 911 paramedic, it’s wonderful and ergonomic
Would you recommend the Investigator, or the 1480 original?
@@Sanguivore i dont remember specifically, i think the smaller one. It doesnt need to be big thats not the point
3rd video I've watch now and had to subscribe. Thanks bro for the reviews.
Thank you!
I'm looking at several back-up knives, right now. The TDIs are definitely on the list. I'm also looking at the CRKT Bear Claw. The plain-edged, pointy one, not the seatbelt cutters, although I'll probably get one of those, eventually, for "just in case" scenarios, where I might need to save someone (it has happened, before). And, there are some push daggers as well. I can legally carry whatever I want, concealed, as long as the blade is 5.5 inches, or shorter. Ka-bar has a lot of options in the TDI collection. I dunno, I start looking at knives, and I get "kid in a candy store" overwhelmed. I want them ALL.
Wasn't previously aware of the Bear Claw! Thanks for bringing that one to my attention. If you haven't given the Shivworks Clinch Pick 2.0 (double-sided) a look, I definitely think that one could give you some good mileage. And if we're talking pure self-defense (especially if you carry a firearm), I find the MDV Plus One from Skallywag to be really tough to beat.
EDIT: You might also like the Kizer Bowtie that just dropped a few days ago, or perhaps the Variable by them.
The Ka-Bar 1480 was my first "get off me" knife that I purchased and carried for awhile. I still have it, and I bought a different Kydex sheath for it so it would have an even smaller footprint. Also I added a mini Ulti-clip on the new sheath so it was very comfortable to carry even with sweatpants. It is a very affordable, defensive tool. I don't think anyone could go wrong in buying one and using it. Even if you lost it, or it gets taken away by the police if you had to use it legally in self-defense, it won't break the bank to get another one.
Where did you get the new sheath for it? And would you recommend the 1480 over the 1493?
Id probably just get both. Great video! Thanks
Thank you!
My police officer nephew gave me a 1480 years ago and I’ve carried it extensively. I carry it off hand side a bit to the front and find that I barely notice it’s there. You’re right on point with the techniques for its use but if I may you can can draw it with a reverse grip and use it like a karambit as well. Punching with a reverse grip feels a little awkward but it works too. Keep up with the great content and presentation. Love it!
I bought my wife one of these a few years back and they are a wonderful blade for her.
She may not be able to use a knife as well as I do but she sure can punch. This is ideal for her to carry or anyone really.
I love your videos and keep up the good work my friend.
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much!
Great knives for a great price. I have the whole series of those knives they are excellent defense knives. Thanks for sharing.
Anytime 🙂
I carry an investigator for my job as a security guard. I have some reservations on open carrying a knife on a duty belt, however, so I carry mine on an RCS Pocket shield, next to a tourniquet. I give up some access, but it's still quicker than a folder, and the angle of the grip makes for a very organic draw.
For sure nobody's gonna get
that out of your hand easily.
When they had first introduced
those knives years ago, I
wrote a letter ( yeah it's been
that long ago) to Kabar with
the suggestion that they should consider bringing out
a straight-spined version of
the knives as an outdoors
utility knife. Never heard
anything back or anything
else, so I assumed the letter
was round-filed.
I still think an un-bent version
of basically the same knife
would be a good utility all
purpose knife
Another awesome video, very good information, well researched, own the larger version featured, 13 yrs. law enforcement 35yrs martial arts instructor, a awesome tool developed by a fellow Ohioan. Planning on getting an investigator.
Thank you!
I’ve bought like 5+ of these for women. I love this knife I just wish they had better sheath options.
Armatus Kydex makes an aftermarket sheath for it.
I carry this DAILY!!!! Incredible blades! I carry one on my gunbag and at times on my person
As a retired Sheriff's Deputy I carried the original TDI Kabar knife;. I also bought one for my son who was also a Sheriff's Deputy. They work well and we both have them and carry them on certain occasions. Thank you for another excellent review.
Thank you my friend and for your service as well
@@411Outdoors You're quite welcome.
Every day for the past many years I think about getting one of these, but the sheath system has always said "NO". However that Investigator looks like they redesigned the sheath to be move comfortable and a better draw. If Tomars offered free shipping then I'd be there all the time since it's NYS.
TBF, there's also no shortage of aftermarket sheaths on the market, but yes, the investigator is a big improvement.
I have the 1480 I bought when they first came out and have carried it offhand on my belt. I am a homecare nurse and some neighborhoods I have had to go to are sketchy at best.
Thanks for the great video. And yes sir, I truly appreciate the Ka-Bar brand. The shop looks awesome. It was about time for such a dedicated shop. Cool job.
Thank you!
Thanks for the video.
I've seen these, but I've never thought much about them.
One thing that I love about a push dagger is that I can drive with a push dagger in my hand and still grip the steering wheel pretty much in the same way that I always do. In a bad situation where someone broke my window and was reaching into the car, I can stab or slash with the knife and then go back to driving my way out of the situation. I don't think this knife would be as easy to hold while driving.
As a small get-away-from-me knife, I can see either of these being very effective. The shape would make them easier to carry comfortably. One of these would be much more comfortable than a push dagger. The light weight would make putting one in a pack as a backup easy enough.
As always I appreciate your take on things, I ordered the short handle and I ordered the longer handle in coyote with a serrated edge. I'm a sucker for knives and like to rotate what I carry lol
Awesome!
Interesting blade. I carry the Esse version of this style of knife. I can't remember what esse calls theirs at the moment. Nice video. Take care.🇺🇲🔪🌲🔥
One of my favorite profile of blade
I've carried a TDI in an ankle rig and on my belt for years, Ka-Bar always makes excellent real-world, hard use knives.
Been carrying one as well on back side of my Viktos upscale sling its a fantastic way of carrying it
Learned something new. I knew only the two long and short blade versions (with various edges and points), nice that they offer the same blade with smaller handle, more Clinch Pick size. Pick what works best for you. I only owned the Last Ditch Knife but sold it as being too small and harder to grip. I see they have a TDI folder version but that would come up with all the fine motor skill issues. Yup, can't own a push knife in Canada, but you can own a TDI.
The TDI is a must have. It is something perfect for women in my opnion. Very intuitive when its in hand. Great for men as well i have two.
Get yourself the serrated version i keep on outside of my rescue vest great for seat belts and clothing
Love the shape of this knife. I want one! I've got a little backup blade that I don't use because I can't find a comfortable way to carry. Also I've got knives with the angle downward and they're very nice to use ...
I carry the TDI but I also alternate with a Regiment Blade. The Regiment Blade is similar. I did an Unboxing on my channel.
I have one of the longer blade ones and It carries rather well concealed when i put it on my right hip and cant it a bit. I had to play with it a bit because it was unusual at first but now i forget its even there when i am wearing it.
I wish I never watched this video because I just went onto the site from your video email for K Bar and spent 130 dollars on one of the knives in your video and a fishing K Bar rod and a spoon fork and knife K Bar and a knife case display and a K Bar slingshot with 4 extra band sets and a throw away K Bar knife but I will love them all when they get here. Thanks brother.
Thank you! 🙂
The TDI is a masterpiece line. I wish I could still find the large serrated. But the only ones available now seem to be the serrated tanto.
Pistol grips are common on fixed knives or folding knives, especially combat knives that are mainly used for slashing.
The knife was actually a was collaboration with John and Ethan becker
I actually apendix mine owb upside down at times
Just placed an order for a 1493. Didn’t know about this knife. I have a couple bars already and like their quality. I’ve changed handles but the blades are like pry bars. Thanks for the insight.
Always a pleasure!
I used to have two of those, one small and one large. I replaced them with a Scallywag Tactical MDV+1. I wanted something that had a slightly longer blade and steel that had better edge retention.
I carry the standard TDI as part of my EDC, but I use the sheath of the Investigator. A more refined sheath in my opinion. Brother on another note. Not to get weird, but I've been in the market for an M65- Field jacket. Would you mind saying what brand you're wearing.
Frangouch
I carry the regiment blades low viz pro. I luv ❤️ it!!!
Ethan Becker is amazing
I carry a 1480 etc appendix, most days I forget it's there. I also carry a Meyerco Karambit, very ergo, very thin profile.
Best place to carry the TDi or any defense blade is apendix left right ware your hands rest
Please get a cs black talon 2 its the scariest piece of steel ive ever held ....the promo videos aint wrong you can rip someone open like 1-2 feet worth of a cut and that is scary running it from someone's chest to stomach would be devastating
i had 1 but with a ankle rig and wore while working a few Diplomatic sites wasn't bad during the colder months but in the heat of summer that rig got very warm around the ankle, but the knife itself was great forgot the model it was but blade was longer w/ serrations. wish i still had it.
I carried the serrated version behind my mag pouch. If anyone asked, I told them it was a "seat belt cutter."
I love these knives, I have the serrated style myself, always have it with me, definitely my number 1 edc. Kinda makes me feel like one of the velociraptors from Jurassic Park, lol.
Another great one is a esee izula 2, horizontal appendix carry
I love the TDI knives. Not as big a fan of the sheaths, particularly the clips.
I've been thinking about getting one of these but haven't been sure for one reason or the other. The prices on Tomar's beat the prices I've seen elsewhere, so figure I might just go ahead and scoop one up. Are the sheathes different between the 1480 and the 1493?
A tad. One has a screw on clip. The bigger one I believe
I would love to have a edc knife and is great and I like kabar I have 2 already the 1211 and the bk9 both are to big to carry
I have one for years. I have tried to carry it several times but it always winds up back in the drawer. Just not comfortable for me.
I have carried one for years
How are you carrying the 1493? It seems like the clip is upside down for a pocket or belt carry. I’ve tried moving the clip around but the holes that would work best are too far apart from each other.
What seems like the bottom of the clip ends up being the top? It’s weird. It ends up caring horizontal very well for me.
So on a belt?
I subscribed to your channel!!!
Thank you!
The sheaths were designed correctly.
I own the 1480, it is in EDC rotation and I love it. I do prefer carrying my edc fix blade center line and that is why I carry clinch pick or tops cobra on belt loops more often. Anyone have a center line recommendation for the TDI?
i carry a TDI every day..take care
Can it open letters though?
Sure
This is a good ass video lol
Much appreciated!
I have the 1483, if you have to use that your opponent is in for a big surprise and he has a lot explaining to do to his wife what happened to his face.
