I normally don’t like it when movies are adapted into musicals, but they did a great job with this one. Though this original film is amazing, the story is important for sure.
The fun begins in the home of the Turnblads and so does a legacy this classic story has lasted now for nearly 3 decades. From Hollywood to Broadway and back to the big screen but now to television as this year's NBC holiday musical production. RIP Divine
John Waters wrote the original movie adaption and directed the original movie.. I assume he made a good chunk of change selling the rights to his adaption.
I was blown away at the fact that "Divine" had a Top Twenty Hit in Europe called "You Think You're A Man". She did it on Top Of The Pops, The UK's longest running Music Show. The Folks who wrote and produced The Track were Pete Waterman, Matthew Stock & Scott Aitken on their Record Label PWL Records. From 1984-1993 they were The UK's Hottest Songwriting Trio. Their other hits were for Rick Astley, Right Said Fred, Princess and Banarama. Pete is still a legend who would later host a Show called The Hitman & Her and from that Show were Three Dancers who would be Pop Stars themselves. Jimmy Constable & Simon "Spike" Darwin of 911 and Kerry Katona of Atomic Kitten (Whole Again). Pete was so powerful that when he started out Simon Cowell followed him around like a "Puppet" so his Girlfriend could record a Track called "Toy Boy". Her Mother Miguel Brown had the Hit So Many Men, So Little Time.
I was today years old when I found out there was a 1988 film version after watching the 2007 one about 100 times and watching the stage show with Michael Ball in the West End in 2021 🤣
I am guessing all of these "I prefer the 2007 movie" comments are from mostly young people who like quirky musicals. The rest of us love Divine and John Waters' midnight movies. Waters makes $$$ either way. Good for him!
I’m one of those who prefer the 2007 movie… not just for the actors or the acting though, personally i loved the songs they chose & the way they preformed them! Obviously they had some great actors John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Christopher walken, jerry stiller! & John waters makes an appearance in it as well! I just think they wanted to make hairspray better & honestly I believe they did! 🤍
The other night my mom and I were watching Independance Day that had Harvey Fierstein (who was Edna in the broadway musical). She was led to believe that he was in this movie, but I had to correct her with a hammer and tell her Divine was the original Edna.
I suggest all the teenage on here go and watch John Waters' other hit movie, Pink Flamingos. If you liked the 2007 musical, Hairspray, you'll absolutely love Pink Flamingos!
This is the real Hairspray. You can't beat the original. Ricki Lake & Divine did it better. Sorry John Travolta & Nikki Blonsky, you were ok, but you just can't compare to the originals. 👍🏻👍🏻
FORGET ABOUT YOUR ALGEBRA & CALCULUS YOU CAN ALWAYS DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THE MORNING BUS CAN'T TELL A VERB FROM A NOUN WHEN YOU'RE THE NICEST KIDS IN TOWN!!!! ROLL CALL!! Nothing like going into the original movie and you start singing the songs from the musical!!
Yeah this movie kind of got buried after they redid it and put John Travolta in a fat suit. Taking the place Divine a drag queen. I really wish they had put another drag queen in that role and not John Travolta.
wAY funny , this verision is better, but like the musical , Love Debbie Harry as Ambers mom MS Soft Shell Crab 1945 LOL divine to funy < Rickie lake love her to
divine's line "i'm trying to arrrn in here" will remain one of the most iconic lines of all time lmaooo
I love that Baltimore accent: it’s sort of Southern in some ways, especially “arrrn” for “iron.”
Tribute to dustin hoffman in Midnight cowboy
@@rellman85 i mean maryland is the south
John Travolta even icon-icized it in the Musical they did and Queen Latifa repeats it the same. It's Iconic!
You stole my post! I was just going to say that!!
wow this one is so much more gritty and real than the remake
Well it's from the 80s.....
roisin culler it was crap
The music in the original is perfect for the time era , especially in the Corney Colliins scenes , the remake was meh !
It wasn’t a remake. It was adapted into a Broadway musical and then they made a film of the musical.
I mean it was made by John Waters lmao
Divine was such a good actor
At least John Travolta did great 👍 as Edna years later
@@jadehedglin1430 No he didn't. His acting was atrocious and his accent sounded like Dr Evil.
Divine( Glenn) was so genuine- whether she was Dawn Davenport or Edna Turnblad. you empathized with her.
Divine Died right before the release 😢😢😢
@@paulamiles9559 I cry every time she goes out the house and gets in the pink dress
You can't beat Divine as Edna.
Fantastic performance.
Devine did do good as edna but travolta was even better in the first one
@@darlenepratt3967 Divine was a drag queen, Travolta was a man in a fat suit and an oversized duster. Big difference. Also this was the first one
@@darlenepratt3967 No he wasn't.
@@darlenepratt3967 hell no. Divine had pizazz and attitude only a woman in drag could have
The same way that no one can ever beat Harvey Fierstein when if comes to the Broadway version...
I normally don’t like it when movies are adapted into musicals, but they did a great job with this one. Though this original film is amazing, the story is important for sure.
@Kelly Preston the new one isn’t a remake, it’s an adaptation of the Broadway musical
They've warmed up
Could you turn that racket down am trying to iron in here. LOL 😂 gets me every time
"Penny your mother called, she's on the warpath she said you were punished" .
You should watch the 2007 version that line is funnier 😆 😂
@@daisy8798 John Travolta played a hilarious Edna 🤣
I love the movie from start to finish but that one line is worth the when viewing. Also " my diet pill is wearing off"
I’m always punish
Divine ia one of the best character actors ever. God rest his/her soul.
His. He knew he was really a dude.
He wasn't trans, he was a drag queen ❤
"She's just a teenager" officially my favorite quote from the film
"Penny your mother called she's on the warpath she said you were punished" I still laugh my ass off on that scene
Don’t you mean all frantic
@@manuelorozco7760 you're absolutely correct
Larry Dyer I hated it when Edna said that

"Penny your mother called, Tracy can't you say hello to Mrs. Malinsky"?
"I have hampers of ironing to do, and my diet pill is waring OFF!"
I watched this movie over and over and over when I first bought it on Video! Last of the great classic movies of the 80s.
I didn't even know there was a remake, the original will forever be my favorite.
Give the remake a try. I was 14 when it came out
I didn’t know there was one from 1988 until my mom told me I only watched the musical version from 2007

Ricki Lake is the ONLY Tracy Turnblad for me! And Divine is the ONLY Edna!
Me, too
i met Ricki Lake today!
That’s your own opinion but I kind of agree with you on the Edna part because no one would be as great as Divine
Please try Brendon Rogers
Nikki Blonsky is a much much better Tracy Turnblad. But Divine will always be the best Edna Turnblad.
The 2007 one was my childhood; but *THIS* is the original thing! 🤩
So was mine
@@manuelorozco7760 Wow! Subscribe to me! 🤩

because in this movie they had the real 60s music :)

The most iconic line divine ever said "i'm trying to arrrrn in here."
The ORIGINAL. Thank you DIVINE. Thank you John Waters. 🖤
Yes I do realise it is the original released in 1988, that starred Debbie Harry, Divine, Sonny Bono and Ricki Lake amongst others
This version is the best.
The song on the Conry Collins show is called "mashed potato time" from dee dee sharp ;)
I really like the very ornate shadow box hanging on the wall. The two frames to the left complement it. They were BIG in the '60's.
man i love this movie
the acting xD omg
Lillian Laurence ikr
I love it! John Waters is amazing😁
This movie is classic. John waters is a genius.

Loved Divine
Divine was robbed of a supporting actor Oscar nomination.
Didn't he pass away before the film's release?
Who is the guy dancing in the corny collins show in the blie suit?
I wanna buy this movie I saw it before on Comcast on encore channel.
all I did was search up a music song and it gave me this recommendation
Nostalgic!
Can we address how some of the Song choices in this film smack
I’m only now understanding why they had Travolta play the mom in the more recent one

Why is Edna always a Guy? :$
Always has been even on the theatre I think. Just makes the character more funny , i think.
lisa olguin same reason peter pan is always played by a girl
+MarcieT theVampireQueen Good comparison even I saw the NBC Live version that starred Allison Williams and Christopher Walken.
+lisa olguin It's a traditional drag queen role and John Waters conceived Edna as a drag queen role
I think honestly that Divine played Edna best
