I’ve been attempting double unders for the past 3 years; was always inconsistent because I whipped myself so much that I always ended up giving up. I have a competition coming up and DU’s are a requirement so I set my mind that I need to learn doing them. I came across this video when I was at a point where I was about to give up. I followed the steps exactly as instructed and I admit that I got stuck a bit in the last part (1 single, 1 double). BUT today I attempted in stringing double unders together and I managed 17 unbroken!!! Point is, follow the instructions of this video because it DOES work. THANKYOU! So happy with my little win 🎉
I have trouble at the first part, 200 single unders in a row. I almost always mess up by 40, and I'd be really happy with 90. Nonetheless, it seems possible that many can be done in succession, but with bad form. This reminds me to make videos of myself. Note: I sometimes succeed with double unders, but the form is more like the way he says _not_ to do it. I think working on the power jump stage will really help.
steps to du : 1. do single under 200 reps straight , body stay engaged and tight , use wrist to turn the rope. 2. Do power jump 3.Do 3 single jump +1 double under ( 50 reps) 4.Do 1 single + 1 double (50 reps) 5.Do consecutive double under (start with 2 du, and then move on to 3 du ..and so on )
Watched this last night, and I was able to do it today. Step by step I followed keeping up with form. Within 5mins I was able to do 5reps of 2singles and 1double unders. Thanks!
this is probably the best online video to achieve double unders from zero...very good progression...top drawer method of nailing them. power jump then 3 single 1 double...2 single 1 double etc ...and a decent amount of reps before progressing ...very good advice to calm the student down and get them focussed on each progression...and MOST IMPORTANTLY ...learning to double under and maintain form.
OK .. I have watch a lot of videos on learning double unders .. by far this is the best video I have ever seen .. I am so happy to talked how not to fall into frustration and also on the progression.. I found this video to be very informational and very clear.. Thank you for taking the time to post it .. :-)
Hey man, your video is very cool. Best double under tutorial I've found! I've been training for a few weeks now with your system, started doing 2 regular jumps then power jump on the 3rd cycle. I was a bit impatient and kinda moved to doing actual double unders between every 2nd or 3rd single. I've bought a speed rope metal cable and found that helps, yesterday successfully did 21 doubles with single unders in between as you recommend. I'm still jumping a bit high but find it helps to skip in front of a mirror so you can see your technique. My goal is to do consecutive double unders for a full minute!
I have watched many videos on how to master double unders for the past 8 frustrating months. This technique of starting out with singles mixed in with doubles is the best way to go. Thanks for the help!
0. 200 reps with good form - using wrist only - butt and belly tucked in - straight back 1. Powerjump - 3 single + 1 powerjump - (for 50 powerjumps) 2. Double unders - 3 single + 1 double under - for 50 double unders - 2 single + 1 double under - for 50 double unders - 1 single + 1 double under - for 50 double unders 3. Consecutive double unders 2reps 3reps 4reps ... ... Achievement unlocked! Double unders
thank you sooooooo freakin much for this video. ive been trying for 2 years and watched your video last night and got it today!!!! dude, seriously.... THANKS!
WOW! This might actually be the ticket. Always a major fail when I try DU's....I get frustrated and just do singles, I will start from the beginning and hopefully will be doing DU's in the near future.....Thank you, great tips coach!!
1) Thanks to this progression, I'm finally starting to get single-single-double in strings of 5-10 after a year of going nowhere. 2) I dropped in at Paradiso Crossfit in Venice last week and had a blast! Awesome coaches, great atmosphere, and plenty of equipment.
Soooooo i had a feeling this video was gonna be awesome. Watched it before bed one night and couldn't wait to try the steps. Next day, applied the steps and yes like so many others said 👏 I got it. Gotta work on form some more to get smooth repetition, but I've officially done a double under. Never give up.
I’m saving this video! I just got my double under ( only 1 sometimes 2 at a time) I’m going to follow the rest of this video to get it consistently! Thanks!!
It's taken me 5 months to build up to 200 singles for the first time. But everytime I try double unders my form falls apart so I still think this progression makes sense for me. I don't want to learn bad habits that will be with me in the coming years.
I struggled for months with a thin, light cable, (propper speed rope). Just couldn't get any feel in the wrists and couldn't catch any rhythm. Got a heavier cable with heavier handles (by accident) and started knocking 10-15 DU's within a week. Switched back to speed rope today and started doing 15-20 from first go.
Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for! At gymnastics I used to jump double unders different way, what you call breaking the form, and this method makes it really impossible to do hundreds of double unders unbroken. We had never been supposed to jump them more than for purpose of single jumping training.
You can increase your reps like this: Skip 1 rope at a time and keep it increasing. Eg: Move the rope once and jump once. Then move the rope twice and jump twice and so on. If you trip, start from square one.
Been sitting outside trying to get these tonight... unsuccessful. Watched your video and decided to start with 200 unbroken singles. That was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but I did an unbroken set. Day 1. I'll update as time goes.
Do I start off with a slightly heavier jump rope or use the PVC one that I’ve currently got? Liking the 3 single jumps to 1 double under, been jumping for years but never really stuck at giving DU a go
Hi, I just started crossfit a few months ago, we don't do much rope jumping. Now that 17.1 is coming up, we started to work a few things, like DU, of course, I can get one in once in a long while. After watching the video, I think I better start with doing singles. I'll start on it tomorrow and see... Actually, it's after midnight, so, it'll be later today. Thanks for the video. Now I have something to work on, and definitely record myself and check for form.
Thanks for asking. After the video, I actually went to the gym and tried it out. Got some results, except, I had previously injured my elbow, and that aggravated it, so I stopped, especially the open was going on at that time. Right now I am still working on singles. For Women 60+ scaled division, DU is more a luxury item. I figure I better work on my wall balls(I am still at 6 lb wall ball), jumping chest to bar---no clue on that one yet.
Hi there! I am excited to try this.. I have been doing CF for over 2 years now and DU are the one thing I cannot getttttt!!!!! It has been so so frustrating! I am looking to get a new rope because I think mine is too light.. can anyone recommend one for beginners?? Thanks!!
+M. Ruth Obando We now use the RX'd jumprope at our gym: www.rxsmartgear.com. Its a little heavier, but turns really well. The biggest problem is that they size it for you and you cannot adjust it. Be sure to let me know how it goes!:)
+M. Ruth Obando Sorry for the delayed response! We have our athletes start with RX brand jump ropes. They turn well and have some weight to them. Our light competition preference is RPM. Hope that helps!:)
This was a very helpful video when I was learning my double unders. However, I have a question regarding turning while doing my double unders, oscillating, like a sprinkler. When I start I focus on a spot just above parallel but my body turns to the left as i do them. I trust what my coach has told me what's happening, that my dominant foot (left) is landing milliseconds faster. I can continue stringing them, how do I stop this bad habit? Any tips you may have to correct this is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for this video, it’s very helpful. I keep bringing my knees up when I’m going for the double. It’s an old habit I’m trying to unlearn. Any other suggestions on how I can unlearn the knee bend?
I have a question. I pass the rope once but jump 2 times. Like I put my feet 2 times on the ground. Is it possible I jump one time and pass the rope once too??
The cheaper ones I used for the majority of the demonstration is from buyjumpropes.net. My preference is the RPM jumprope when you get to a faster, lighter cable style though:)
i can double under but with bad form...gonna go back to basics and 2 jumps then 1 double for a week see if i can improve form ..thanks...they are actually easier with a shorter rope...the longer ropes tend to drag the floor a bit and cause untold woe. but you need a longer rope for double under crosses and crosses in general , running crosses is hard with a short rope.
Excellent tutorial but I'm kind of stuck. I can do a couple of hundred singles in good form and I can do the jump, jump, jump, explode part. I just can't flick my wrists fast enough to move the rope around twice while I'm doing the higher jump. Do you have any tips and/or progressions for that? Thanks.
+TheMerryPup No worries! Here are a couple ideas in order of how I would approach it: 1. Work on performing your singles faster. Try to get 150 singles or more in 60 seconds. This is hard to do if you are not using your wrists properly with a shorter rope. If you are way off, this could be a sign of needing to fix one of those two things. 2. If step 1 is in order, really focus on the sensation of two flicks of the wrist. Practice without a rope and say in your head as you do it, "one, two...one, two" and really focus on what that feels like. When you move to practice with the rope you need to feel that speed in your wrists and speed on the rope. You should hear the rope whirring as you go. Don't worry if you don't accomplish the rep, just get that feeling and speed on the rope and then you will start to connect it with your jumps I promise. 3. If that drill is still not working, something that works for some people, although it feels weird is to try a double without doing any singles beforehand. Just from a dead stop, try to do a double under. Don't worry about linking them, again, this is just to feel the rope speed. This works because many people miss due to the anticipation of performing the double. Let me know how it goes!:)
+paradisocrossfit Thanks for the fast response, David. And for the very detailed suggestions. I'll give this a try and let you know how it goes. Best, Peter
i started skipping rope from the last 3 days. Rn my calves and ankles are sore and also my core muscles. Im just able to do 200 skips but I think with consistency I'll be able to do more than 500 skips a day with double unders
i can do some DU's but then I mess it up. I'm still not sure if I have to quickly move my wrist to get the doubleunders, and by landing again chill real quick and then again add the tempo for the DU's & so forth OR move my wrist constantly in the same tempo...?
Its always hard to say whats going on without seeing it, but if you can do one, thats a good sign. One of the things I recommend for any "complex" movement is to video tape yourself. It allows you to see whats going on when you achieve the movement vs when you mess up. We often see people that can pull off doubles with poor form for a few reps, for example, with the arms out to the side, tucking the knees, dropping the chest, jumping really high, etc. As we recommend in the video, prioritize reinforcing a quality position, with a tall body position, elbow by your side and using your wrists and then build from there. Let me know how it goes!
It went pretty good but there isn’t a mirror so I’m not sure if I’m actually doing it. I’m going to have to ask permission at the gym I go to so I can try it in the weight room if they’ll let me just to see my form. Will continue to practice though.
+Erik Meadows Sorry I didn't get to this earlier. We now use the RX jumprope brand for our beginner athletes, as it turns nicely and has some weight and sensory feedback. If you aren't looking to spend $35, the rope in the demonstration was purchased at buyjumpropes.net. Good luck!
I practiced this so much, I can do as many single unders, power jumps etc... with good form as I want. And I still cannot get myself to do even one double under. Every time I attempt it, the second rope swing hits my feet, while I am still in the air. What can I do?
Sorry to hear you are still struggling, here are a few additional tips: The most likely thing happening is that your arms are moving away from your body, which causes the rope to hit the feet as it shortens the length of the rope around your body. This can be hard to "feel" when you are performing the movement, so I tell people to film themselves and see whats happening. If this is the case, first, be sure that you are practicing your singles properly with the proper length rope and second, prioritize your mental focus on your hand location when you go for the double. If you still struggle with it, some people will take an assistance band and wrap it around their arms to physically hold their arms in to practice and reinforce what that position feels like. The other option is that you aren't spinning the rope fast enough. I tell people, you should be able to hear the rope as it whips through the air. This is potentially the most challenging aspect of the double under to learn, as the speed comes from the timing of your arms into the flicking of your wrists. If people are struggling with this going from doing singles, I will have them try a double right away, with no singles before. Just try to go right into a double whipping the rope fast so you can get a feel of the speed. Hope some of this helps, let me know how it goes!
Here are two quick tips: 1. Hold both ends of the jump rope in one hand, without jumping or moving your arm, just work on swinging the jumprope around. Its kind of awkward, but can be good training for the wrists. 2. If you don't mind spending a couple bucks, this is a great product for training the wrists: jumpnrope.com/product/speed-balls/ Good luck and let me know how it goes!:)
So I'd say I have double unders down at this point and can do sets of 50. It gets to be crazy challenging though when you're doing it for so many sets and at that point I'm just gassed.
Wow, I'm trying to learn DUs as a fit strong guy and I can barely do 50 singles in a row😮 guess that's where I get to start! 200 singles is now my next goal💪
There are a lot of options of brands of jump ropes to buy, from more expensive ones at rx smart gear to cheaper ones at buyjumpropes.net. For beginners, the key is something with a little more weight/thickness in the cable. The length is something that is dependent on both your height and the length of your arms. Be sure to experiment, film yourself to see the position of the cable and go as short as you can without compromising form. Good luck!:)
I’ve been attempting double unders for the past 3 years; was always inconsistent because I whipped myself so much that I always ended up giving up. I have a competition coming up and DU’s are a requirement so I set my mind that I need to learn doing them. I came across this video when I was at a point where I was about to give up. my cardio is too bad
glad you mentioned the correct form! I was doing them exactly like you showed in the "bad example"
Thanks! All about that proper practice!:)
Watched this last night, and I was able to do it today. Step by step I followed keeping up with form. Within 5mins I was able to do 5reps of 2singles and 1double unders. Thanks!
bobitlukban Awesome job! Keep up the good work and thanks for letting me know:)
This video is gold. Spent the christmas break following the progression and now can do double unders. Awesome video, thank you!!
Yasss I can officially do double unders, I’m a bit out of breath as I type this but I’m sooooo ecstatic!!!! Thank you thank you!!

This is the most practical progression for mastering double unders

He didn’t even explain how to make it happen! I can do 200 singles. I can’t do any doubles-after a single or not!

Went from not being able to do 1 double to doing consecutive doubles in around 20 mins. Very useful!
Thank you so much I mastered double unders in a week thanks to this tutorial! :D
Boom! Great to hear!:)
A week??? Now I really feel stupid lol
I have watched many videos on how to master double unders for the past 8 frustrating months. This technique of starting out with singles mixed in with doubles is the best way to go. Thanks for the help!

This looks like solid advice. I'm gonna work on this progression this week.
I happen to be a drummer, and that comes useful now bc we use our wrist and it helps now that I’m getting into boxing!
This is the best DU video on TH-cam IMO. Thanks for posting! 💪🏼
Boom! Thanks for your support Kelie:)
THANK YOU!! This goal finally feels achievable. Will certainly update with progress.
1) Thanks to this progression, I'm finally starting to get single-single-double in strings of 5-10 after a year of going nowhere.

Dude, I wanna thank you for posting this video. I learned how to do double under because of this :D
+Claudio Medrano Great to hear! Thanks for letting me know:)
how long it took?
Migle for me it took me 2weeks! But I did it every day!!
It took me about 2 weeks
practicing every day for like 30 minutes each day.

Oksana Varlamova Great to hear! Thanks for letting me know it helped:)
Nice demo, thanks! Just wondering if a headset mic might help decrease the echo n the sound recording...
Yeah, I made this a long time ago with my iPhone for our members and never realized over a million people would watch it!:)
This video is SO helpful! I started crossfit two months ago and have felt lost with these. Thanks!
Yes!!😄❤
Our pleasure! Stoked this video has been so helpful, I made it on my iPhone one night on a whim:)
I love the video. Excellent explanation and advise.
Would have been amazing if you used a collar mic.
Thank you sir im a begginer and i find this very helpful! Good day!
Jesus, I can't go 20 singles without messing up.
yes! lets practice every day and triple under will be the next goal lol
You can increase your reps like this:
Skip 1 rope at a time and keep it increasing.
Eg: Move the rope once and jump once. Then move the rope twice and jump twice and so on. If you trip, start from square one.

Thank you for this video. I just unlocked DU earlier and it was the greatest feeling ever! :)
Do I start off with a slightly heavier jump rope or use the PVC one that I’ve currently got? Liking the 3 single jumps to 1 double under, been jumping for years but never really stuck at giving DU a go
Thank you for the sign on the wall, i almost watched a crossfit video, thank you again for the heads up
Glad I watched this video. Thank you! I did my first double unders today!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing:)
Thank you. I am sure this video is really going to help me.
Bravo! Good stuff. A common-sense approach
Wow Thank you. Ive never done one and i watched this and now i can
I always got told a rope heavier up to about my armpits. What rope would you recommend?
can you recommend some jump rope exercises for badminton players
Vinay Srivastava Agree
I can't seem to get out of the single-double routine and it's so frustrating. Any advice?
do you recommend a similar approach (short length of rope) for learning and mastering singles as well?
Absolutely!

Jed Earls Here you go! www.buyjumpropes.net/ultra-speed-cable-jump-rope/
Given myself 2 weeks to learn this so let’s see how I go !
So how did you go? :)
Just want to say a big thank you! I followed your video and I got!

Yeah, I haven't played with crosses too much, but will give it a try and see how it feels. Thanks for the comment!:)
If I am getting little pain over the ankle, should I stop or take a break from jumping rope?
creedlivee I guess you should stop
This video was really helpful. I'm pretty sure the skin on my feet has hardened as a result of whipping myself too 😂
hahaha you have so much personality!
😂 😂 😂
I just can do one but I am not able to continue the rotation of the rope as it gets loose. I just don’t understand what’s happening!?!??
I am good at bench press squat and even power cleans but I am bad at DUs. Something is wrong with me.
You just made that look so easy...

I began with thinnest one.
Too much painful when tripped.
Brilliant video, thanks for the tips. Have avoided these until now. I'm off to buy a rope!
Good luck and let us know how it goes!:)
is there one double under crossover?
i started skipping rope from the last 3 days.
Amazing teacher. Will be trying this.
Thanks for the comment:). Be sure to share how your progress goes!
Thank you for the tip! This is quite helpful. Will practice this technique.
Great! Let us know how it goes:)
It went pretty good but there isn’t a mirror so I’m not sure if I’m actually doing it. I’m going to have to ask permission at the gym I go to so I can try it in the weight room if they’ll let me just to see my form. Will continue to practice though.
Where can I get a thicker rope with more sensory feedback for beginners, like the one mentioned at 1:40?
+Erik Meadows RX ropes have thicker cables
+Erik Meadows Sorry I didn't get to this earlier. We now use the RX jumprope brand for our beginner athletes, as it turns nicely and has some weight and sensory feedback. If you aren't looking to spend $35, the rope in the demonstration was purchased at buyjumpropes.net. Good luck!
What's your thoughts on leather ropes? And how do you shorten a rope? Thanks.
pat mcd - Tie a loose knot somewhere near the handle that won't interfere with the movement of the jump rope.
proven progression for double under! finally did one yesterday😊 THANK YOU DUDE!!💯🔥
Awesome! Our pleasure. Thanks Waltir:)
Can I learn this by tomorrow?
I practiced this so much, I can do as many single unders, power jumps etc... with good form as I want. And I still cannot get myself to do even one double under. Every time I attempt it, the second rope swing hits my feet, while I am still in the air. What can I do?
Sorry to hear you are still struggling, here are a few additional tips:
The most likely thing happening is that your arms are moving away from your body, which causes the rope to hit the feet as it shortens the length of the rope around your body.
Thanks a lot, just did my first double unders! I focused more on the arm position, that helped a lot.
Great to hear!:)
Never achieved one DU, read this comments, achieved three DU one minute later!
is there anything to wrist technique other than going faster?
Here are two quick tips:
1. Hold both ends of the jump rope in one hand, without jumping or moving your arm, just work on swinging the jumprope around. Its kind of awkward, but can be good training for the wrists.
2. If you don't mind spending a couple bucks, this is a great product for training the wrists: jumpnrope.com/product/speed-balls/
Good luck and let me know how it goes!:)
Here I am before doing the 24.2
Awesome video man. Helped me out a lot!
Awesome, thank you!
Really good information! Im trying it this way from here out.
+Lorenzo Robbins Let me know how it goes!
great tutorial! I'm excited to try your suggestions!
+Michelle Joyner Its been a few months, how has the progress been?
My jump rope always hits the ground while im jumping rope is it long for my height or length of my ripe?
Its ok and common for the rope to kiss the ground at the bottom, but if an excessive amount of the rope is hitting the ground it is likely too long.
I'm a newbie here, road to day 12, however I did one DU only. No pain no gain, so many wip marks. First I master the basic except DU😥
So I'd say I have double unders down at this point and can do sets of 50. It gets to be crazy challenging though when you're doing it for so many sets and at that point I'm just gassed.
everybody said they could do it but i cant :( ill try again for a couple of days and comment if i manage to figure it out
Wow, I'm trying to learn DUs as a fit strong guy and I can barely do 50 singles in a row😮 guess that's where I get to start! 200 singles is now my next goal💪
What kind of shoes are those?
Vivo Barefoot, love them, but beware they are very minimalist:)
i m new to jump rope .. can u suggest which rope shud i start with ? my height is 5.6 ft
Good luck!:)
that was a amazing class.. thank u
Hopefully I can do this.
Man! You gotta get a crossrope, will greatly step your game up!
Lol I just got an ad for Crossrope on this video :)

jjvgeeh98 Thanks! Hopefully will get some more like this put together:)
