If i were talking purely sound-wise, I also don't particularly like the distortion at the end. But when put into the context of the lyrics and the theme of what he's trying to convey. It's perfect. He had just refered to his shadow as a monster and that part is from his shadow's perspective so the distortion very much reflects that and I think it's genius.

Can we appreciate how the boys are always changing up their musical style for each comeback? Yoongi kills this song and it's so emotionally deep - he looks quite vulnerable during some points which makes me want to wrap him up in a great big hug. I can't wait to see what the rest of the album is going to bring next.

If you do read the lyrics you’ll understand why that distortion was there. It’s his shadow talking to him. This era is based on Carl Jung’s Map of the soul book.

The mv is 10x more powerful when you read the lyrics. They explain what the song is about and why Yoongi would've used the distortion. If your shadow had a voice what would it sound like? His shadow got pretty aggressive in the end providing a very haunting sound. But the message is clear - to grow you have to accept your shadow and overcome your fears.

For this intro it's Suga's battle with his shadow and on the switch up at the end it's his shadow singing back to him letting him know that they are the same person and that he'll be better if he just accepts it. Also it is how people want to be famous but then comes the craziness of sasaengs (stalkers), paparazzi, haters and the fear of falling from Grace.

Thank you for saying they are not Kpop, because that's just facts. Also, the sound distortion at the is for the effect because that was the Shadow (Yoongi's shadow) talking to Suga (Yoongi's persona). Also, Comeback Trailer for BTS' albums are usually done just by one member, they alternate. MOTS Persona was RM, Love yourself Answer was Jin, Love Yourself Tear was Singularity etc etc. The lyrics on this video is deep, it gave me goosebumps. I came across this comment on another video and I share their sentiment so I will share it here with you.
As the song's name suggests, the theme of this song revolves around the internal battle he struggles with - his Persona and his Shadow. His persona craves success, hence the recurring verse "I wanna be a rap star, I wanna be the top, I wanna be a rockstar, I want it all mine, I wanna be rich, I wanna be the king, I wanna go win". His shadow shuns from spotlight, afraid of the dark side of fame, hence "Please don't let me shine, Don't let me down, Don't let me fly".
When the beat switches up, the feel the of the song changes - it turns wilder, more frantic, more uncontrollable. In this part of the song, he accepts the fact that the shadow is a part of himself, that his feelings of craving success while wanting to escape the toxicities of fame are valid and inescapable. This whole song is a dialogue between his two selves.
The scenes in the MV hold great symbolism:
- The opening scene of the hotel hallway shows faceless silhouettes facing the doors of the hallway, representing their absolute lack of privacy and the oppressiveness they must feel all the time. The red slime-like thing around the doors references an art piece by artist Anish Kapoor, and can be taken to mean that he loses parts of himself with every door that he has to go through.
- The hands reaching out to pull him under, his resigned sigh, the countless phones in the air pointing towards the performer SUGA high-up on stage (his Persona) while the human Min Yoongi trudges amongst them unseen below (his shadow), his soft "I wanna be me".
This song is a reminder of their lives behind the glamour. It is not a flex nor a lament, but a raw portrayal of the truth. As always, Yoongi never fails to deliver good music and thought-provoking lyrics.

It gets better and better with every time I listen to it. The whole composition of the song and video are so greatly paired together. Suga is a master story teller and I wonder how much of the song is his own doing because I can clearly hear loads of AgustD in it.
My bias who doesn´t by his own words care about dancing or singing and does both on top of stellar rapping and lyrics writing superbly.
He is also the one that affects me most with his voice. His emotions come across so well.

I think the distortion was to imply the clash between Shadow and Persona hence the lyrics "I am you, you are me...". In that scene, Shadow was talking to Persona (Suga the artist).

I wasn't ready just like you even though I was expecting Yoongi or Hobi already. I was supposed to watch this when I got home but when I peeked and saw 408 views I couldn't resist. I saw Yoongi, cried/screamed, set aside work and turned the music way up. I had to watch it several times because I was in pieces the first couple of times. Now I am at home and comfortable I can concentrate on lyrics. Driving, this song and my emotional state is not a good mix. YES Pre-order is THE verb!

The distortion part is my FAVOURITE part in my opinion. It also hits very differently when you actually KNOW the meaning of that distortion part.
