  • PHEVs are accused of being the worst of the worst, as they supposedly use way too much fuel and nobody ever charges them. In this test I deliver proof that this is absolute BS. This test was done with empty battery in order to evaluate the efficiency of the drivetrain irrespective of battery-size.

    Nicely described, Helmut. "A simple way of creating a plug-in hybrid." ;-)

      Still better than a conventional ICE, but it could be done better...

    Helmut, Thanks for the video. Peugeot vehicles are not sold in the U.S. They were years ago however. If I recall back when they were sold here they were not very reliable compared to Honda or Toyota, hopefully they have improved.

      Columbo drove his for ages and was obviously happy with it.... :)

    Good morning Helmut.
    Congratulations on your well-made videos and information. Sorry if I ask about the video of the 308 but I would like to ask you if you will do a test of the consumption with empty batteries of the Lexus NX 450+ and the autonomy in electric mode only. Thank you so much

      Hi Andrea, Lexus are a bit difficult to get as the only dealer around here is not cooperative. But I keep on trying ;)

    thank you! This is the test I was looking for. I have driven a corolla hybrid for about 3 years and achieved around 68mpgUK. Now I have the choice of a 308sw phev or another corolla. I do a lot of longer journeys. If I have the 308, I would be sacrificing efficiency compared to the atkinson engine in the Toyota. Which would you choose if you had only those options? I realise short journeys around a city would be much cheaper compared to the corolla.
    btw I very rarely used the friction brakes in the corolla. Do you think the max regen is similar for both cars?

    • @ecodriver1746
      @ecodriver1746  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, The regen is definitely higher in the 308, as the electric motor is stronger and the battery bigger, so more energy can be pulled and pushed back. Difficult to say whicht one will be more efficient overall. From looking at my data I'd probably go for the Corolla (better on motorway), it depends how long your "short" trips are.

    Thanks for the video Helmut. Was wondering in case you can tell, what is the combined range on this model? Let's say I charge it to 100% and drive in Hybrid only - mixed road (bit of highway, but mostly city) at avg. 60-70 km/h. How far can I go until the battery is empty?

    • @ecodriver1746
      @ecodriver1746  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're welcome.
      I'd calculate it by using the capacity of the fuel tank (40 l), my consumption (5 l/100 km) and the achieved electric range (see separate video) of 55 km and would end up with around 850 kms.

      @@ecodriver1746 Thanks for your reply! So if I understood it correctly, and please correct me if I'm wrong - a single charge would allow the electric motor to travel for roughly 850 km in hybrid mode, on afformentioned conditions? If so, well, that's not too shabby! I was (and perhaps still am) considering Renault Megane E-tech 60kwh, but since they up'ed the price by almost 3000 EUR, the peugeot 308 phev became an attractive alternative - however I was worried about the consumption/range when not being able to charge it at home - and thanks to both your videos, the fears have somewhat dissipated. I live in a condo with no charger near me, however I could charge at my workplace. And ofcourse we do have rapid public chargers (Denmark), but I figure these will be mostly for weekend occasions. And on those days when I can't charge at work, or when I'm on a longer trip, I can now rest assure that the ICE engine won't burn a hole in my wallet :)

      Be aware that hybrids are subsceptible for inefficient driving. A non-efficient driving style will increase consumption by 40-60% easily.

    Great video Helmut, thanks. Please pardon my ignorance but does the car charge the electric 2 ways....via regenerative braking and direct charge from the ice?

    • @ecodriver1746
      @ecodriver1746  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Andrew, you're welcome.
      Yes, most PHEVs charge via braking and the combustion engine.

      @@ecodriver1746 thanks for the quick reply! I have ordered the 180hp phev as I do a lot of short urban journeys and I live in London where there are a lot of public chargers, with the odd longer journey out of town. For a lot of people phev will be a gateway to full electric I think.

      @andrewfinkelsteintennis1915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ecodriver1746 sorry one more question.....you started on zero battery but the car put some charge in it and you were able to use electric mode. At the end of the drive did you have some electric range left? It looks like the dial says zero.

    • @ecodriver1746
      @ecodriver1746  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most PHEV charge the battery a bit in order to have some power when needed. Also by braking and going downhill energy comes back to the battery. But when you drive in Hybrid mode normally PHEVs empty the battery almost completely. The "advantage" of living/driving in mountainous/hilly areas with PHEVs is that you get some considerable amount of energy back in order to drive electric only.

    Hybrid car and 13 litres per 100km fuel consumption. Ridiculous.
