DW9 had a pretty barren launch at first, but it was improved a lot through free updates and new DLC content, so I’d prioritize on reviews or videos that discuss the game over the past few months rather than a year ago.

Cloned move sets ✅ Bad and repetitive combat system ✅ Empty and bland open world ✅ Bad frame rate and resolution ✅ Repetitive story mode ✅ Laughably bad and cringe English dub (replacing iconic voices) ✅ This game proves that being an open world game doesn’t automatically make a game good, especially when the developers have no idea what makes an open world game good. It also shows us why we shouldn’t hype anything up because it might end in disappointment.

Voice actors are terrible, they lack emotion & character, combat system is sluggish & doesn’t flow, the land looks barren, no color, doesn’t feel like your traditional Dynasty Warriors game, weapons... every one needs their old weapons back Sorry I jus really hate this game
While I think this game fails as a main dynasty warriors game, It could work much better as an empires game. Maybe being more live event focused so everything happens in real time. If enemys are going to attack you, they would start amassing their forces on your borders. Or maybe if you wanted to negoiate an aliance, you would have to go to the province in person (with bodyguards) and talk to the leader of that faction. I think watching forces around the map move around, following their leaders orders would be awesome. The poor voice acting will still bug me though.
What I agree on: _ The instant engaging charge in replacement of the 6 steps running charge _ Character's attire design _ Talking animation almost human _ Combined Musou of DW4(5) and DW7(8) What I suggest: _ Revive dueling ( 3 kingdoms ain't nothing without strategies and duels ) _ Retain EX System ( only fighting games like MK, Tekken, SF needs that much combo ) _ DW5 voice actors ( only for characters in DW5, after that is by choice ) _ Open world should be in Ambition Mode or the Empires expansion _ Filling in missing campaign battles from previous DW installments _ Limit weapon cloning, changing back to DW5 or DW8 weapons ( some of the weapons just wasn't mean for certain characters ) _ Additional mounts ( the 4 great horses for 3 kingoms are not the only ones being ridden ) _ DW4 or DW8 theme for Lu Bu ( the 2 best tracks for Lu Bu so far ) _ Overhaul puberty Xu Zhu ( Xu Zhu in the books is not such simpleton and full of glutton, he is somewhat like Zhang Fei, but better discipline, also lean enough to duel with Ma Chao reaching to a point of deadlocking weapons with the Ma prince ) _ Some character wasn't properly aged ( Cheng Pu already looked like 60 year old grams when joining Sun Jian )
There must be character switching mechanics due to the fact that it would be better to have two characters who handle different tasks just to get the mission done and avoid having to go back and forth accomplishing tasks while having to defend an essential stronghold or character from getting beaten or captured . Also, I think it’s time for Xu Zhu to stop acting like a simpleton and be a menacing badass just like Imagawa Yoshimoto who ditched the comedy and kemari crap to be a formidable obstacle to Oda Nobunaga’s ambition in Samurai Warriors 5

I enjoy this game a lot. I'm not a hardcore warriors fan but I like to play these types of games sometimes, my favourites being Sengoku Basara on the ps3 and the Dragon Quest Heroes games. I find this one relaxing with the fishing, hunting, gathering and overall exploration. The fighting is cool too at least for me.

What's so funny is that on the console releases, I honestly feel like they forgot to turn on vertical sync with how bad the screen tearing gets. It does become easier to ignore it, but c'mon Koei!!! Also I finally understand the combat to the point where I actually appreciate it. Once you understand how it works, it basically allows you to kill more things with less downtime in between attacks - I honestly thought it was REALLY stupid at first too, but when I remembered what the core gameplay was since the beginning, it made more sense. I hope they do DW9E right because I am enjoying the hell out of DW8E
I enjoy the combat system but I do prefer the old one. I still played the hell out of dw9 though and still go back to it every so often and did so recently in preparation for DW9E. Like you said, I hope they do it right because I've been looking forward to it since before it was even announced as the Empires games are where I spend most of my time in Dynasty Warriors. I'm just desperate for new updates now though.
I really enjoy this game. I don't understand the hate for it. I've played the older ones, and I've played this one. I like both. Can't be the same game doing the same thing every time, right?

I still think it's one of the worst ones. But I see what it was trying to do. I'll play it over DW2 and am currently writing a Comparison episode between DW9 and DW6, so I'll hold my opinions on that. But I would prefer to play DW3-5 over this one personally.

It wasn't bad but it could've been better. One con I definitely had with it was the English Dub voice acting. Seriously after the awesome voice cast we had for the English Dub for Warriors Orochi through DW8 along with finally getting the name pronunciations correct. We get this all new English Dub voice cast and while the name pronunciations were correct the English Dub voice cast for DW9 falls into the category of bad that it's now hilarious.
This is easily my least enjoyable DW game, it feels like the design of the game took a hit going open world. It was fun and challenging to move around in stages where you need to clear objectives, without that, and with the combat and weapon variation lacking this feels as much a step back as 6 felt, maybe even more so. I'm hoping with 10 they either go back to stages or work heavily on the design of the world. And for christ's sake dont remove weapons from the previous entry for scummy DLC
It's already been confirmed that the Warriors franchise will stay as a stage based game going forward. Though thanks to the fans of DW9, they are looking to create a spin-off or a new series that is open world.
I want to see more love given to the stages. We need big stage pieces, more events, more branching ways levels could play out depending on the resolution of those events.
@@cafelatte1124 Definitely hopping on a trend when they couldn't even spend the time to test grappling hook in its early stages, being op as fuck and making the game anti climatic. Also the open world is empty as fuck, it feels like someone one evening placed the "fillers" of little groups of enemies with officer in random locations over the map. Open world of this game could be made amazing, but it requires a team who have actual experience in creating an open world that feels alive, even traders and travelers would have been a huge help for this game.
I feel like they should have kept the combat and weapons from 8, but added the combat state system to it. And also just because everyone can use a bow does not mean Huang Zhong and Zhu Ran can't have them as unique weapons.
I've heard the PS4 version has some input lag, maybe thats why you felt the Trigger attack didn't work all the time? On PC the combat feels great, I actually went back to DW8E for a couple hours and because the new system felt so natural I kept hitting RB for no real reason. It does need some work, but things like gems, items with more varied effects, and stat points that you distribute yourself made the new combat system really fun. People have actually been sharing character builds and finding really minute details in each character to make them each different and optimal. As opposed to previous games where you would just get stuns guard breaks and life regen on everyone. And I think once you spend some more time in different characters. you might consider everyone having their own story to be a negative. There's so little that isn't shared between them that it just feels like the gameplay was padded out as long as humanly possible. It's a testament to how smart the decision to go to Kingdom Mode exclusively since 7 was.
For what it is, I enjoyed this entry but not as much as the golden era of Dynasty Warriors. However, I still believe this would make for a perfect Empires entry. To me, that's what this one felt like above all else.
I don't quite know how they would work an open world Empires title, but I wouldn't mind seeing it. And I have to agree with you, especially since the release of the hypotheticals, I'm enjoying DW9. I just wish it used the same combo system as 7 and 8.
I think they have a great basis for Dynasty Warriors 10. They just need better voice direction, return to the old system and spruce it up or improve this one, focus on making it feel alive, return some old weapons and allow custom characters, improve air and strategy, and custom empires and I am PRETTY SURE it'll be the best Dynasty Warriors game. It'd not take a lot to make a fantastic sequel. I just hope they understand that instead of copy their Samurai Warriors 5 approach, no disrespect to that game, but it doesn't feel like the correct approach with Dynasty Warriors specifically. Then again with how they butchered ROTK14, as much as I play it, I don't have too much hope.
Yup. Nope. Season passes? Pay walls? Dynasty Warriors is Dead to me now. I'm just going to go back and take what I've got and be happy with that. All good things come to an end. Time to live in the past just like my heroes.
I prefer 7 also. I haven't played 8. I agree, Empires isn't for me either. I also like Samurai 4 II and Warriors Orochi 4. Between those 3 I think you've got all the hack n' slash you need...lol... :D
@@ActualHorrify Absolutely not. 9 is the only one in the franchise I don't find remotely enjoyable. It's a grand ambitious game that ultimately failed to deliver substance.
One thing that can be a pro but also a potential con is that there is a Trial version that gives you 3 tickets to choose ANY character to unlock per ticket and play their story with the added benefit that if you get the full game, those characters are still unlocked. The con being because of this, the entire game basically gets installed so you have to wait a good long while before you can play the game not to mention all the space it takes but it all and all is worth enough of the wait considering how long certain routes can be and you can pick 3 people of over 90 to play in a Free Trial version.
the one thing that has irked me in most of the newer games is the unit roster for the actual soldiers and the non-existent morale system. In the older games that I played (3,4,5), your roster the army was much more diverse in my opinion. The basic unit always had a sergeant and 4 peasants and the more elite ones had elite sergeants and guards. And each of these units had different stats. The more elite one could actually take on several units since they also had better stats in every category, but could also attack more frequently. On top of this having a morale system reinforced these units by giving them buffs if you killed a bunch of units or prevented/did certain events for the battle. This allowed weaker, smaller unit(armies) to be able to fight much larger armies and even officers. This was certainly a more diverse system than what they had from 6 onward.
I feel like DW7 and 8 had a noticible moral system, especially 8 on higher difficulties. In DW9 though it feels like it's all you. I never felt like my allies were doing anything at all.
I just wish that they can do a dynasty warriors 4 remaster etc or a DW1 VS fighting game with ps4 or ps5 graphics. Nice content bud and DW 4 it’s my favorite at the moment.

I know this game has gotten a lot of hate, but I do have fun. Thanks to you and LightytheNube review, I have confidence to keep playing this game. It's not like the old DW games (3-5), but it's fun to me.
I think what Koei should have done was scale back the size of this game. Instead of a huge open world make it a much smaller semi-open world (which is still much bigger than your typical DW level) and put like maybe 2-4 safe camps/towns where you can recover and change/upgrade equipment and accept some side quests. There should also be less but more interesting side quests and due to there being less side quests and a smaller semi-open world each level shouldn't take more than an hour or two to finish (giving you more chances to play other characters). I think that's how Koei could make an open world Dynasty Warriors work. Aside from the open world aspect of it Koei should bring back the weapon variety from DW 8 and just use the tried and true combat system of DW 7 & 8 with maybe some minor tweaks and enhancements if they want to. Last but not least just bring back the voice cast of DW 7 & 8, they were good and know how to play their characters as well as pronounce names properly so it's best to just use them again.
I also think a more semi-open world style would work better. They did it fairly well in DQH2 and they could have still increased the scale from that. I also agree that the combat system of the older games is great and could just use some improvements to make it that much better. I actually have a video coming out on Monday where I talk about this stuff lol Also about the voices, I have a feeling we won't ever hear English coming back unless they can guarantee sales from it. Since it's the Japanese head office that makes those decisions, the Western market can't do anything to really help make English voices a reality.
Much prefer this idea, in-terms of the stages. However I do partially disagree with you when it comes to combat, as I think 9s combat with some growth has potential to be absolutely fantastic. Right now it feels limited, but if they mixed the old combo system with this one (think it would be possible with the right tweaking and coding) oh man the combat would BEASTLY! Whilst the old combat did feel more "complete" it was still lacking, not as much as the new one, but it wasn't perfect.

Hopefully Koei have learnt from DW 9, cause I think we can all assume Samurai Warriors 5 will likely be open world too. DW 9 overall is okay, I agree with the voice acting, it isn't great but definitely not the worst. The weapon clones are annoying but there are some variations to the moves for each clones and it is still fun doing the flow attack through loads of peons. Each character having their own story definitely buffs up the replay ability of the game. I don't know how difficult it would of been but for me, if Koei kept the DW 8 movesets with the EX system and maybe implemented the state combo system as well it would of been more beneficial than just getting rid of a perfect gameplay foundation built in DW 8. I agree with everything you stated in this review, Overall I do think this game shouldn't of come out this year, especially now with WO4 being released THIS YEAR with DW8 Weapons/movesets, tells me Koei rushed this game out for some reason. This game could of waited until 2019 imo, Koei could of worked more on the gameplay and each character having a unique weapon rather than the clones. That being said DW9 is still better than 6.
I have a feeling Koei will be going back to stage based games. I've heard the in Japan and China the game wasn't as well received as previous ones. But I do think that Dynasty Warriors CAN work in open world. Koei just needs to do a bit more research on how you make their world more interesting and make players want to keep playing.
i like it now that its all patched, the music is amazing, i like exploring to break up combat, and FINALLY WE GET A CHINESE DUB. i mean come on its so cool to finally hear chinese warlords speaking the language.
I still haven't really appreciated a lot of the music properly I don't think, but I saw that all the Dynasty Warriors music is on Spotify now so I'll need to listen through again.
Pretty sure the perfect dynasty warriors game is possible, they just need to pick a style and improve it not just do whatever. They don't know what they want to do with the game.
honestly what i have issues with is that the open world feels and looks like is from a ps2 game. the other thing that really bothers me is the in game cutscenes they are so bland characters are just standing there just talking so boring. there is a certain scene where they are just drinking and talking that scene is really simple but its so good why couldnt they try to do that more. ive been skipping a lot of dialogue just cause it feels like nonsense or like it really doesnt matter. but im having the same issue i want to play something else but i keep playing the damn game cause of how simple it is to just turn it on and just go do something without thinking to much about it.
I wouldn't say these are PS2 level graphics. The world might be PS3 or early PS4. But those conversations are super boring. I call them cardboard-cutout-scenes because they aren't very expressive. SW5 did them, but added more expression to the character models.
@@ChrisGildart yeah I'm exaggerating about the graphics it's more the layout of everything. Some textures look like they haven't loaded. And structures look like they were just placed there like a sims game. I do know for sure this game has made me not like Cao Cao, don't know if he is this bland in all DW games. By the way this is my first DW game that it's not a spinoff with the skin of another franchise.
I uninstalled the game after 70 hours of gameplay. I'm a thousand times more dissapointed than i was with dw6. It's just not dynasty warriors, it's a random open world sandbox with combat that makes me sleep and dissapointing cutscenes and story/character progression. It's just not a musou game. I wouldn't be so upset if this was like a spin-off empires title.
1: I'd love to see a follow-up to this for Mouso month 2021 2: Got it on sale, it isn't too bad now. Being able to play test each character and decide which one to buy would have made for a much more satisfying experience. As I am only really playing 4 heroes, but ended up buying the full game to narrow down which heroes had movesets I genuinely wanted (the DLC daughter of Dong Zhuo is my fav).
I'm a series veteren and this is the one DW game I just cannot get into. I feel it was a great idea not fully executed the best way it could. I've cleared one or two story modes and after that I had zero interest in the same old side quests and exploring and just warped to the objectives. The constantly repeating side quests were a down side to em :S Saying that.. I am looking forward to Dw9 Empires as I ALWAYS love the Empires series so.... let's see how that goes
Samurai Warriors 5 so far looks promising. I like that there is aerial attacks now with charge moves and I'm loving the new character designs for it especially Hanzo Hattori 😎
100 hours in DW9, I think its wonderful. There is huge obvious flaws, but its got its charm If the cities had more immersion omg I would love it, the cities are all so wonderful to walk through
This is like the biggest hot mess that I play on a regular basis. Been playing Dynasty Warriors since I was in grade school so I definitely give nostalgia some of the blame, but I’ve been playing it fairly regularly since it came out, tryin to work through all of the characters stories. I don’t think it’s the worst thing to ever happen to Dynasty Warriors like some people do, but it’s definitely got a ton of wasted potential. Sad too, because I feel the story was told the best in this game (minus those god awful “cutscene” animations) , which is what keeps me coming back lol
I think a pre-patched XL CE version with all the characters and weapons available from the onset would help ease at least some of the ill will generated by this release, but I think Koei Tecmo needs to be careful, because they're not making multiplayer-focused eSports titles like the sort that gets away with being scummy.
That's what I'd recommend. Unless they put out a big patch. It's just not what we need for an open world Warriors game. Not terrible, but nothing I'd go back to and binge a night of gaming on.
I'm really hoping we dont end up with a cycle for the series, where we get a good game, a game that's more of the same, and then a complete overhaul that the fans hate. between from 4 to 9, we've seen this happen twice now.
This is a unique review, I enjoy watching it. For once, it's not full on 'completely bash on DW9', even if the cons outweigh the pros, you still mentioned the pros. Good job. Though I do have one question. What are your thoughts of the new characters introduced in this game? Are they good or bogged with problems too, like the game?
I don't really feel many of the new characters have much weight to them. Cheng Pu, Yuan Shu, and Hua Xiong are the only ones I felt needed to be made unique with some characters still being left as generic. Though I do like Xin Xianying.
Actually can't you get skills and accessories to change your attack speed, cancel types and skill triggers? I don't remember combat being the EXACT same from start to finish

I never finish the story mode for any characters. I like something new but DW9 is just too empty to me. maybe they should make the stage base but bigger instead.
They should simply release more content by fixing the emptyness. Its rushed as hell and an blind fool can see that. But despite all the negativity this game has potential so they shouldnt drop it.
I kind of think different about this game than you do apparantly... I thought the battle system was okay and the way the story was presented wasn't too bad for me, but I thought the open world, pointless side quests and other activities felt like a waste of time. The fact that you can get so much money by fishing for one hour broke the whole game, I could always buy everything I wanted and get so many health items that the game didn't offer any challenge whatsoever. You also hit the max damage way to quickly. I eventually just put the difficulty to the easiest setting after a while to save time. Also hunting and fishing didn't feel polished at all, it wasn't fun to explore that empty world and gathering ressources, ores and plants was totally pointless to me. But the worst part for me was probably the lack of a coop modus. I was really looking forward to play this with my brother and it just wasn't possible. The lack of weapons and modes was just the icing on the cake. Funnily enough, though... I also couldn't stop playing it until I got the platinum after 90 hours, lol. I was kind of thirsty for a new warriors game, I guess. Hopefully this game is just like DW2 and DW6... the first game on a new console generation always tends to be the worst. I hope they'll manage to expand upon their new formula. The open world itself isn't a bad idea, but they really need to do more with it...
This game does need some polish, but it's somehow addicting. I'm still playing it after getting the platinum and patiently await the DLC even though the season pass doesn't seem too worth it to me. But who knows, maybe Koei will patch a bunch of things into the game and really bring it all together.
I personally put my hopes into the upcoming Empire and XL installments or 10 and save my money. But I sure hope you didn't waste yours and enjoy that stuff!
It always seems like the first DW game for the next gen of consoles isn't gonna be good PS2 - 2, granted 2 only really seems to be bad in hindsight, PS3 - 6, PS4 - 9 (because 8 was just a remaster/ GOTY edition of the PS3 version). Kinda has me worried if we get a DW10
Thank god, a good video about DW9 I swear all of these videos saying DW9 bad etc is getting old and the worst part is you get jumped at for liking the game. I like DW9 because of the open world and that you can explore the lands. Plus I like the outfits, sure some are hit or miss but I like the detail. I like also how they made it realist because people say it bad because it too empty, hello people it what it would if looked like back then.
The only thing about an empty open world is that most people aren't going to find it fun. I personally didn't enjoy it because I don't want realism with my Dynasty Warriors. I wish I enjoyed it more because it seems like Koei has plans to support DW9 for a while. Maybe when they announce what the future DLC is I might go back to it. But I have a feeling I won't want to even with a second season pass of content.
Just finding these reviews for DW.. BEEN A HUGE FAN SINCE THE THIRD INSTALLMENT AND HAVE LOVED IT EVER SINCE. As far DW 9 I still love the idea of an open world, cause this history actually did take place so think it is cool they did it that route I want them to cont ok une with that. Along with adding to the fullness of the world (merchants, patrol troops, criminals, and etc. Classic RPG mechanics with what have already implemented). I hope they take a route of continuing this idea. While making the world fuller as you said and I stated, but also keep the intimacy with characters, story, and combat. They have shown they can create the intimacy with the story DW7 ( that story was gripping, I would just replay that game to watch the 'Dynasty warriors" movie!) The state combo system isnt terrible. I think they should flesh it out, make certain chains from each reaction perse. This installment has me fascinated in the hybrid of RPG and Hack n' slash if perhaps they took some mechanics from AC and implemented them in the game. Not nessicarily fascinating them but having also grappling attacks like in DW6 those where so cool just doing a quick grapple on an officer or soldier to push them away or kill them. Also like with the musous make some grappling as they introduced in DW7. The one verses a thousand is funn but I think I am ok with 1 vs 500 cause that may be a better combat system for some cool intimate grappling moments and also a vas fuller world. Rather than trying to fight a thousand mindless AI. I kind of want to see if they continue this idea cause I am still deeply fascinated with this open world thought.

as a dynasty warriors and warriors of orochi fan, i can assure you this game would let you down. combat system is the best for a 3-year old kid not sb who wants to make various combos smoothly. also open world has NOTHING to offer, just vaaaaast unattractive land with nothing exciting to explore. lastly, stupid gameplay; if you kill the officer in charge everyone else would flee. this makes the game dumb after 1 hour of playing. it was a huge let-down for a die-hard fan like me.

I downloaded a trial and couldn't finish it I hated it. I liked the DW style not this RPG. I ended up spending an hour on the first mission and didn't finish it most of it was just running around, hate the RPG convos instead of the over the top cut scenes, hate the new hub and the forced mini map, hate the combat got pure bored, didn't feel like a warriors game at all for me. New voice acting sucks. I was Dun and his voice grinded on me high pitched, his voice used to be deep, growly and badass in old games
I dunno I mean you’d think that 6 years after dw8 Koei would release a masterpiece but my god I didn’t expect this. I loved dw8. The story, the xl edition, the va. Everything was flawless. I got so excited when they even added another ex attack for each character. Was hoping for a third in dw9 but I don’t expect a whole revamp and open world. I mean they didn’t really have to do that. Things were going great the way they were in my opinion. Although I did hear people say the transition from dw7-8 wasn’t impressive. But I didn’t really care. As for dw9 it’s so hard for me to keep playing. I get bored so easily. And this is coming from a hardcore dw fan. I hope 10 goes back to the previous format becuz this game (of course in my own opinion) is just awful
DW9 is definitely a long stray from what we're used to. It they continue with this style of gameplay in DW10 they'll have to work out a lot of flaws from this one. I agree with you, DW8 had some of the greatest in every department.
I was hoping with this game they could improve characters I thought were amazing in dw3-dw5 like sun ce taishichi lu bu and more by the way I know I totally butchered that name sorry forgot how to spell that name
Its like they just keep adding characters and not working on each character enough. like in dw5 each character had their own story and spoke about how they felt for the upcoming battle. I know they have 90+ characters in this game right now so they can't really do that but aside from the cutscenes I don't really connect with them. They also still have the same lines when they defeat an officer from like dw6-7.
Shame If they changed a few things the idea of nine would be epic add army controls custom characters and soldiers etc and events and a better English cast or better directing then the games idea can be salvaged but whatever.
@@angelvaldez3536 the standard edition should had designed army control and Empire Vagabond troops by taking Unity Pro's greatest options. And yet NO CUSTOM CHARACTERS FOR Nine characters, they could had used custom characters to advertise 9 and it is much easier to add custom Unity addon-tools to the game but Koei fails at Coding. Not Unity's fault but language in C# is too difficult.
FreelanceArt101 I prefer they made a new empire that way they can just rid the old combat system and add a new one with all these new things and even then maybe add something that gets rid of the unnecessary size of the map to help performance.
I still haven't played this game because I don't have a machine powerful enough. I really want to though, the ability to run around open-world ancient China is really tempting.
All this time I was waiting for a new outfit for Lu Bu. So far they haven't bothered. But with every new patch and extra feature they've put into DW9, it's gotten considerably better. The Trials, with all updates in mind, present a real challenge. Especially the Cursed Beasts stones, basically animal boss battles. I still haven't figured out how to beat them even now. My pros about this game are the landmarks and scenery. For example, the HuangLong just northwest of ChengDu, beautiful sight. And the fact that battles are no longer isolated on a small map, and enemy armies are in a more full scale, especially during Seige battles. Mounts when fully leveled up go CRAZY fast. They help with getting around the battlefield as well if you don't like how the Flow Combat System works. And yes, they also help when you do your initial exploration of the entire landscape. Needless to say, it'll take well over a day to cover the whole map. My cons, naturally is the English dub cast they ended up with. That was really because they couldn't get the original VOs, due to the #PerformanceMatters protest. Yet some of them nail their roles better then most. Such as the English dub for Xu Sheng was perfect. And the game engine itself is still looking a bit buggy, yet regardless I managed to get over that and still enjoyed it. Overall, I admit it's far from the best, but it's still not really the worst. DW6 still has the worst entry in my book.
DW9 had a pretty barren launch at first, but it was improved a lot through free updates and new DLC content, so I’d prioritize on reviews or videos that discuss the game over the past few months rather than a year ago.
I was able to get it for $10. Hopefully all the new content makes this game worth $10.
I would say $10 isn't a bad price for this.

Dynasty warriors 5 had the best character costumes and weapons sets

Voice actors are terrible, they lack emotion & character, combat system is sluggish & doesn’t flow, the land looks barren, no color, doesn’t feel like your traditional Dynasty Warriors game, weapons... every one needs their old weapons back

While I think this game fails as a main dynasty warriors game, It could work much better as an empires game. Maybe being more live event focused so everything happens in real time. If enemys are going to attack you, they would start amassing their forces on your borders. Or maybe if you wanted to negoiate an aliance, you would have to go to the province in person (with bodyguards) and talk to the leader of that faction.
I think watching forces around the map move around, following their leaders orders would be awesome. The poor voice acting will still bug me though.

_ Some character wasn't properly aged ( Cheng Pu already looked like 60 year old grams when joining Sun Jian )
There must be character switching mechanics due to the fact that it would be better to have two characters who handle different tasks just to get the mission done and avoid having to go back and forth accomplishing tasks while having to defend an essential stronghold or character from getting beaten or captured . Also, I think it’s time for Xu Zhu to stop acting like a simpleton and be a menacing badass just like Imagawa Yoshimoto who ditched the comedy and kemari crap to be a formidable obstacle to Oda Nobunaga’s ambition in Samurai Warriors 5

I enjoy this game a lot. I'm not a hardcore warriors fan but I like to play these types of games sometimes, my favourites being Sengoku Basara on the ps3 and the Dragon Quest Heroes games. I find this one relaxing with the fishing, hunting, gathering and overall exploration. The fighting is cool too at least for me.
Con: Jamieson Price did not voice Lu bu like he did for DW 5 to 8XL

What's so funny is that on the console releases, I honestly feel like they forgot to turn on vertical sync with how bad the screen tearing gets. It does become easier to ignore it, but c'mon Koei!!!
Also I finally understand the combat to the point where I actually appreciate it. Once you understand how it works, it basically allows you to kill more things with less downtime in between attacks - I honestly thought it was REALLY stupid at first too, but when I remembered what the core gameplay was since the beginning, it made more sense. I hope they do DW9E right because I am enjoying the hell out of DW8E
I enjoy the combat system but I do prefer the old one. I still played the hell out of dw9 though and still go back to it every so often and did so recently in preparation for DW9E. Like you said, I hope they do it right because I've been looking forward to it since before it was even announced as the Empires games are where I spend most of my time in Dynasty Warriors. I'm just desperate for new updates now though.

It's nice to see someone actually try to find positives from this game lol I feel like alot of reviewers dont really know what bad video games are tbh. DW9 ain't perfect but its hella more fun than 1-5 in my opinion.
I still think it's one of the worst ones. But I see what it was trying to do. I'll play it over DW2 and am currently writing a Comparison episode between DW9 and DW6, so I'll hold my opinions on that. But I would prefer to play DW3-5 over this one personally.

It wasn't bad but it could've been better. One con I definitely had with it was the English Dub voice acting. Seriously after the awesome voice cast we had for the English Dub for Warriors Orochi through DW8 along with finally getting the name pronunciations correct. We get this all new English Dub voice cast and while the name pronunciations were correct the English Dub voice cast for DW9 falls into the category of bad that it's now hilarious.
This is easily my least enjoyable DW game, it feels like the design of the game took a hit going open world. It was fun and challenging to move around in stages where you need to clear objectives, without that, and with the combat and weapon variation lacking this feels as much a step back as 6 felt, maybe even more so. I'm hoping with 10 they either go back to stages or work heavily on the design of the world. And for christ's sake dont remove weapons from the previous entry for scummy DLC
It's already been confirmed that the Warriors franchise will stay as a stage based game going forward. Though thanks to the fans of DW9, they are looking to create a spin-off or a new series that is open world.

Also the open world is empty as fuck, it feels like someone one evening placed the "fillers" of little groups of enemies with officer in random locations over the map.
Open world of this game could be made amazing, but it requires a team who have actual experience in creating an open world that feels alive, even traders and travelers would have been a huge help for this game.

I feel like they should have kept the combat and weapons from 8, but added the combat state system to it. And also just because everyone can use a bow does not mean Huang Zhong and Zhu Ran can't have them as unique weapons.
I've heard the PS4 version has some input lag, maybe thats why you felt the Trigger attack didn't work all the time? On PC the combat feels great, I actually went back to DW8E for a couple hours and because the new system felt so natural I kept hitting RB for no real reason. It does need some work, but things like gems, items with more varied effects, and stat points that you distribute yourself made the new combat system really fun. People have actually been sharing character builds and finding really minute details in each character to make them each different and optimal. As opposed to previous games where you would just get stuns guard breaks and life regen on everyone.
And I think once you spend some more time in different characters. you might consider everyone having their own story to be a negative. There's so little that isn't shared between them that it just feels like the gameplay was padded out as long as humanly possible. It's a testament to how smart the decision to go to Kingdom Mode exclusively since 7 was.
Man, some of the costumes really look better now.
I think the character design for DW9 is actually some of the best.
For what it is, I enjoyed this entry but not as much as the golden era of Dynasty Warriors. However, I still believe this would make for a perfect Empires entry. To me, that's what this one felt like above all else.
I don't quite know how they would work an open world Empires title, but I wouldn't mind seeing it.
And I have to agree with you, especially since the release of the hypotheticals, I'm enjoying DW9. I just wish it used the same combo system as 7 and 8.

I think they have a great basis for Dynasty Warriors 10. They just need better voice direction, return to the old system and spruce it up or improve this one, focus on making it feel alive, return some old weapons and allow custom characters, improve air and strategy, and custom empires and I am PRETTY SURE it'll be the best Dynasty Warriors game. It'd not take a lot to make a fantastic sequel. I just hope they understand that instead of copy their Samurai Warriors 5 approach, no disrespect to that game, but it doesn't feel like the correct approach with Dynasty Warriors specifically.
Then again with how they butchered ROTK14, as much as I play it, I don't have too much hope.

One thing that can be a pro but also a potential con is that there is a Trial version that gives you 3 tickets to choose ANY character to unlock per ticket and play their story with the added benefit that if you get the full game, those characters are still unlocked.
The con being because of this, the entire game basically gets installed so you have to wait a good long while before you can play the game not to mention all the space it takes but it all and all is worth enough of the wait considering how long certain routes can be and you can pick 3 people of over 90 to play in a Free Trial version.

the one thing that has irked me in most of the newer games is the unit roster for the actual soldiers and the non-existent morale system. In the older games that I played (3,4,5), your roster the army was much more diverse in my opinion. The basic unit always had a sergeant and 4 peasants and the more elite ones had elite sergeants and guards. And each of these units had different stats. The more elite one could actually take on several units since they also had better stats in every category, but could also attack more frequently. On top of this having a morale system reinforced these units by giving them buffs if you killed a bunch of units or prevented/did certain events for the battle. This allowed weaker, smaller unit(armies) to be able to fight much larger armies and even officers. This was certainly a more diverse system than what they had from 6 onward.
I feel like DW7 and 8 had a noticible moral system, especially 8 on higher difficulties. In DW9 though it feels like it's all you. I never felt like my allies were doing anything at all.
I really, really didn’t like this game. This one sits below 6 as easily my least favorite warriors game.
I just wish that they can do a dynasty warriors 4 remaster etc or a DW1 VS fighting game with ps4 or ps5 graphics.

I think what Koei should have done was scale back the size of this game. Instead of a huge open world make it a much smaller semi-open world (which is still much bigger than your typical DW level) and put like maybe 2-4 safe camps/towns where you can recover and change/upgrade equipment and accept some side quests. There should also be less but more interesting side quests and due to there being less side quests and a smaller semi-open world each level shouldn't take more than an hour or two to finish (giving you more chances to play other characters). I think that's how Koei could make an open world Dynasty Warriors work. Aside from the open world aspect of it Koei should bring back the weapon variety from DW 8 and just use the tried and true combat system of DW 7 & 8 with maybe some minor tweaks and enhancements if they want to. Last but not least just bring back the voice cast of DW 7 & 8, they were good and know how to play their characters as well as pronounce names properly so it's best to just use them again.
I also think a more semi-open world style would work better. They did it fairly well in DQH2 and they could have still increased the scale from that. I also agree that the combat system of the older games is great and could just use some improvements to make it that much better. I actually have a video coming out on Monday where I talk about this stuff lol
Also about the voices, I have a feeling we won't ever hear English coming back unless they can guarantee sales from it. Since it's the Japanese head office that makes those decisions, the Western market can't do anything to really help make English voices a reality.
Much prefer this idea, in-terms of the stages. However I do partially disagree with you when it comes to combat, as I think 9s combat with some growth has potential to be absolutely fantastic. Right now it feels limited, but if they mixed the old combo system with this one (think it would be possible with the right tweaking and coding) oh man the combat would BEASTLY! Whilst the old combat did feel more "complete" it was still lacking, not as much as the new one, but it wasn't perfect.

Hopefully Koei have learnt from DW 9, cause I think we can all assume Samurai Warriors 5 will likely be open world too. DW 9 overall is okay, I agree with the voice acting, it isn't great but definitely not the worst. The weapon clones are annoying but there are some variations to the moves for each clones and it is still fun doing the flow attack through loads of peons. Each character having their own story definitely buffs up the replay ability of the game. I don't know how difficult it would of been but for me, if Koei kept the DW 8 movesets with the EX system and maybe implemented the state combo system as well it would of been more beneficial than just getting rid of a perfect gameplay foundation built in DW 8. I agree with everything you stated in this review, Overall I do think this game shouldn't of come out this year, especially now with WO4 being released THIS YEAR with DW8 Weapons/movesets, tells me Koei rushed this game out for some reason. This game could of waited until 2019 imo, Koei could of worked more on the gameplay and each character having a unique weapon rather than the clones. That being said DW9 is still better than 6.
I have a feeling Koei will be going back to stage based games. I've heard the in Japan and China the game wasn't as well received as previous ones. But I do think that Dynasty Warriors CAN work in open world. Koei just needs to do a bit more research on how you make their world more interesting and make players want to keep playing.
i like it now that its all patched, the music is amazing, i like exploring to break up combat, and FINALLY WE GET A CHINESE DUB. i mean come on its so cool to finally hear chinese warlords speaking the language.
I still haven't really appreciated a lot of the music properly I don't think, but I saw that all the Dynasty Warriors music is on Spotify now so I'll need to listen through again.
Pretty sure the perfect dynasty warriors game is possible, they just need to pick a style and improve it not just do whatever. They don't know what they want to do with the game.

I wouldn't say these are PS2 level graphics. The world might be PS3 or early PS4. But those conversations are super boring. I call them cardboard-cutout-scenes because they aren't very expressive. SW5 did them, but added more expression to the character models.

I uninstalled the game after 70 hours of gameplay. I'm a thousand times more dissapointed than i was with dw6. It's just not dynasty warriors, it's a random open world sandbox with combat that makes me sleep and dissapointing cutscenes and story/character progression. It's just not a musou game. I wouldn't be so upset if this was like a spin-off empires title.

Being able to play test each character and decide which one to buy would have made for a much more satisfying experience.
As I am only really playing 4 heroes, but ended up buying the full game to narrow down which heroes had movesets I genuinely wanted (the DLC daughter of Dong Zhuo is my fav).

I'm a series veteren and this is the one DW game I just cannot get into. I feel it was a great idea not fully executed the best way it could. I've cleared one or two story modes and after that I had zero interest in the same old side quests and exploring and just warped to the objectives. The constantly repeating side quests were a down side to em :S Saying that.. I am looking forward to Dw9 Empires as I ALWAYS love the Empires series so.... let's see how that goes

Samurai Warriors 5 so far looks promising. I like that there is aerial attacks now with charge moves and I'm loving the new character designs for it especially Hanzo Hattori 😎
100 hours in DW9, I think its wonderful. There is huge obvious flaws, but its got its charm

This is like the biggest hot mess that I play on a regular basis. Been playing Dynasty Warriors since I was in grade school so I definitely give nostalgia some of the blame, but I’ve been playing it fairly regularly since it came out, tryin to work through all of the characters stories.
I don’t think it’s the worst thing to ever happen to Dynasty Warriors like some people do, but it’s definitely got a ton of wasted potential. Sad too, because I feel the story was told the best in this game (minus those god awful “cutscene” animations) , which is what keeps me coming back lol
I don't mind DW9, honestly. I'll still throw it in to play, especially now that I have an Xbox One X. I'm going for 100% achievements again.
I think a pre-patched XL CE version with all the characters and weapons available from the onset would help ease at least some of the ill will generated by this release, but I think Koei Tecmo needs to be careful, because they're not making multiplayer-focused eSports titles like the sort that gets away with being scummy.
I still don't know if I want this game or not might wait for a price drop but Good Review.
That's what I'd recommend. Unless they put out a big patch. It's just not what we need for an open world Warriors game. Not terrible, but nothing I'd go back to and binge a night of gaming on.

This was abyssmal.
I just started playing this game recently. Downloaded the free trial, and bought my fave character for $3. I'm enjoying the heck out of it.
I'm really hoping we dont end up with a cycle for the series, where we get a good game, a game that's more of the same, and then a complete overhaul that the fans hate. between from 4 to 9, we've seen this happen twice now.
This is a unique review, I enjoy watching it. For once, it's not full on 'completely bash on DW9', even if the cons outweigh the pros, you still mentioned the pros. Good job.
Though I do have one question. What are your thoughts of the new characters introduced in this game? Are they good or bogged with problems too, like the game?
I don't really feel many of the new characters have much weight to them. Cheng Pu, Yuan Shu, and Hua Xiong are the only ones I felt needed to be made unique with some characters still being left as generic. Though I do like Xin Xianying.

Actually can't you get skills and accessories to change your attack speed, cancel types and skill triggers? I don't remember combat being the EXACT same from start to finish
I like DW9 , The music , character, and sound effect and grapich of course , But there is one very fatal flaw , the voice actor ,..😭😭 , i Really like Lu Bu voice in 2 - 8 , But in 9 , Look! , The all voice actor is like naahhhh yaaa is suck
I never finish the story mode for any characters. I like something new but DW9 is just too empty to me. maybe they should make the stage base but bigger instead.

They should simply release more content by fixing the emptyness. Its rushed as hell and an blind fool can see that. But despite all the negativity this game has potential so they shouldnt drop it.

I kind of think different about this game than you do apparantly... I thought the battle system was okay and the way the story was presented wasn't too bad for me, but I thought the open world, pointless side quests and other activities felt like a waste of time. The fact that you can get so much money by fishing for one hour broke the whole game, I could always buy everything I wanted and get so many health items that the game didn't offer any challenge whatsoever. You also hit the max damage way to quickly. I eventually just put the difficulty to the easiest setting after a while to save time. Also hunting and fishing didn't feel polished at all, it wasn't fun to explore that empty world and gathering ressources, ores and plants was totally pointless to me.
But the worst part for me was probably the lack of a coop modus. I was really looking forward to play this with my brother and it just wasn't possible. The lack of weapons and modes was just the icing on the cake. Funnily enough, though... I also couldn't stop playing it until I got the platinum after 90 hours, lol. I was kind of thirsty for a new warriors game, I guess. Hopefully this game is just like DW2 and DW6... the first game on a new console generation always tends to be the worst. I hope they'll manage to expand upon their new formula. The open world itself isn't a bad idea, but they really need to do more with it...
This game does need some polish, but it's somehow addicting. I'm still playing it after getting the platinum and patiently await the DLC even though the season pass doesn't seem too worth it to me. But who knows, maybe Koei will patch a bunch of things into the game and really bring it all together.
I personally put my hopes into the upcoming Empire and XL installments or 10 and save my money. But I sure hope you didn't waste yours and enjoy that stuff!
I have a feeling we won't get an Empires or XL. If they do XL it might be more like a game of the year edition with the DLC stuff included.
It always seems like the first DW game for the next gen of consoles isn't gonna be good PS2 - 2, granted 2 only really seems to be bad in hindsight, PS3 - 6, PS4 - 9 (because 8 was just a remaster/ GOTY edition of the PS3 version).

Thank god, a good video about DW9 I swear all of these videos saying DW9 bad etc is getting old and the worst part is you get jumped at for liking the game. I like DW9 because of the open world and that you can explore the lands. Plus I like the outfits, sure some are hit or miss but I like the detail.
I like also how they made it realist because people say it bad because it too empty, hello people it what it would if looked like back then.
The only thing about an empty open world is that most people aren't going to find it fun. I personally didn't enjoy it because I don't want realism with my Dynasty Warriors. I wish I enjoyed it more because it seems like Koei has plans to support DW9 for a while. Maybe when they announce what the future DLC is I might go back to it. But I have a feeling I won't want to even with a second season pass of content.

As far DW 9 I still love the idea of an open world, cause this history actually did take place so think it is cool they did it that route I want them to cont ok une with that. Along with adding to the fullness of the world (merchants, patrol troops, criminals, and etc. Classic RPG mechanics with what have already implemented). I hope they take a route of continuing this idea. While making the world fuller as you said and I stated, but also keep the intimacy with characters, story, and combat. They have shown they can create the intimacy with the story DW7 ( that story was gripping, I would just replay that game to watch the 'Dynasty warriors" movie!) The state combo system isnt terrible. I think they should flesh it out, make certain chains from each reaction perse. This installment has me fascinated in the hybrid of RPG and Hack n' slash if perhaps they took some mechanics from AC and implemented them in the game. Not nessicarily fascinating them but having also grappling attacks like in DW6 those where so cool just doing a quick grapple on an officer or soldier to push them away or kill them. Also like with the musous make some grappling as they introduced in DW7. The one verses a thousand is funn but I think I am ok with 1 vs 500 cause that may be a better combat system for some cool intimate grappling moments and also a vas fuller world. Rather than trying to fight a thousand mindless AI. I kind of want to see if they continue this idea cause I am still deeply fascinated with this open world thought.

as a dynasty warriors and warriors of orochi fan, i can assure you this game would let you down. combat system is the best for a 3-year old kid not sb who wants to make various combos smoothly.
also open world has NOTHING to offer, just vaaaaast unattractive land with nothing exciting to explore.
lastly, stupid gameplay; if you kill the officer in charge everyone else would flee. this makes the game dumb after 1 hour of playing.
it was a huge let-down for a die-hard fan like me.

I downloaded a trial and couldn't finish it I hated it. I liked the DW style not this RPG. I ended up spending an hour on the first mission and didn't finish it most of it was just running around, hate the RPG convos instead of the over the top cut scenes, hate the new hub and the forced mini map, hate the combat got pure bored, didn't feel like a warriors game at all for me.
New voice acting sucks. I was Dun and his voice grinded on me high pitched, his voice used to be deep, growly and badass in old games

I dunno I mean you’d think that 6 years after dw8 Koei would release a masterpiece but my god I didn’t expect this. I loved dw8. The story, the xl edition, the va. Everything was flawless. I got so excited when they even added another ex attack for each character. Was hoping for a third in dw9 but I don’t expect a whole revamp and open world. I mean they didn’t really have to do that. Things were going great the way they were in my opinion. Although I did hear people say the transition from dw7-8 wasn’t impressive. But I didn’t really care. As for dw9 it’s so hard for me to keep playing. I get bored so easily. And this is coming from a hardcore dw fan. I hope 10 goes back to the previous format becuz this game (of course in my own opinion) is just awful
DW9 is definitely a long stray from what we're used to. It they continue with this style of gameplay in DW10 they'll have to work out a lot of flaws from this one. I agree with you, DW8 had some of the greatest in every department.
I was hoping with this game they could improve characters I thought were amazing in dw3-dw5 like sun ce taishichi lu bu and more by the way I know I totally butchered that name sorry forgot how to spell that name
Its like they just keep adding characters and not working on each character enough. like in dw5 each character had their own story and spoke about how they felt for the upcoming battle. I know they have 90+ characters in this game right now so they can't really do that but aside from the cutscenes I don't really connect with them. They also still have the same lines when they defeat an officer from like dw6-7.
I found Samurai Warriors spirit of Sanada to be better :3 not to mention DW8
Spirit of Sanada and DW8XLCE are the two best games in both series in my opinion. Mechanically solid and well told stories.

If they changed a few things the idea of nine would be epic add army controls custom characters and soldiers etc and events and a better English cast or better directing then the games idea can be salvaged but whatever.
@@angelvaldez3536 the standard edition should had designed army control and Empire Vagabond troops by taking Unity Pro's greatest options. And yet NO CUSTOM CHARACTERS FOR Nine characters, they could had used custom characters to advertise 9 and it is much easier to add custom Unity addon-tools to the game but Koei fails at Coding. Not Unity's fault but language in C# is too difficult.
FreelanceArt101 I prefer they made a new empire that way they can just rid the old combat system and add a new one with all these new things and even then maybe add something that gets rid of the unnecessary size of the map to help performance.

I still haven't played this game because I don't have a machine powerful enough. I really want to though, the ability to run around open-world ancient China is really tempting.
All this time I was waiting for a new outfit for Lu Bu. So far they haven't bothered. But with every new patch and extra feature they've put into DW9,
it's gotten considerably better. The Trials, with all updates in mind, present a real challenge. Especially the Cursed Beasts stones, basically
animal boss battles. I still haven't figured out how to beat them even now.
My pros about this game are the landmarks and scenery. For example, the HuangLong just northwest of ChengDu, beautiful sight.
And the fact that battles are no longer isolated on a small map, and enemy armies are in a more full scale, especially during Seige battles.
Mounts when fully leveled up go CRAZY fast. They help with getting around the battlefield as well if you don't like how the Flow Combat System works.
And yes, they also help when you do your initial exploration of the entire landscape. Needless to say, it'll take well over a day to cover the whole map.
My cons, naturally is the English dub cast they ended up with. That was really because they couldn't get the original VOs, due to the #PerformanceMatters protest. Yet some of them nail their roles better then most. Such as the English dub for Xu Sheng was perfect.
And the game engine itself is still looking a bit buggy, yet regardless I managed to get over that and still enjoyed it.
Overall, I admit it's far from the best, but it's still not really the worst. DW6 still has the worst entry in my book.
