Nice job ! That’s the first time I’ve seen A socket machined inside a shaft, great work!

Nice outcome. It was interesting to see the hex socket done in steel. I'd snap that end mill for sure.

Thanks. It wasn't too bad actually, considering the length protruding from the chuck. I wanted to show more machining of the hex, but the camera went out of focus almost the entire roughing cycle. Ticked me off, but I made do with the footage I had.

Dang! Arnold's Fast & Furious machining! Nice to see another vid from Arnold's Design. If my insurance co found out I was making motorcycle axles they'd cancel me on the spot.

Nice job, but why would you need such a high strength front axle ? Wouldn’t stainless do ?

Tell your customer to put anti seize on the threads or they will never get it off.
Really did a great job machining.

And a couple of flats on the aluminium collar to enable a spanner to tighten and loosen it.

@@donr62 the aluminium collar is clamped by the fork leg pinch bolts so there’s no need for flats 👍

Aren't motorcycle axles hardened after machining? My Mach nist said he's not going to machine axle for me, he doesn't want to kill me.

It's 4140 chromemoly aka semi hard. It's purchased pre heat treated to 28-32 Rc. Somewhat hard, but still machineable. It's not breaking without some incredible stress on it. You're machinist is smart though. He doesn't want the liability in case someone tries to blame any bike failure whatsoever on the axle. It's not worth the risk imo.

I would sign a waiver just to get one built . My bike is a 2008 FXDSE2 . I can not find an axle anywhere . Hopefully this guy will contact me and get me back on the road . My axle is almost exactly like this one .
