  • Gordon Murray launched the GMA T.33 with us at the 79th Members' Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport last year and we took the opportunity to have a chat.
Gordon Murray Automotive's first car, the T.50, had a variety of inspirations and the man himself walks us through them and all their fascinating little details.

He just need to stop saying he did first carbon monocoque. Amish people from Hercules made it for them in Utah. McLaren did not even have and autoclave those days.

Beautiful machine, and really the first of the supercars, but had a very major flaw. Because of the mid engine, the gas tank is in the worst place possible; the front of the car. Which means as the tank gets lower, the nose gets lighter. Dangerously lighter. Makes driving it...interesting. Pucker factor interesting. But that's part of the character of the classic Italian supercars from the 60-80s. Until Audi made them...choke...reliable. HERESY.

I love the Elise but it’s a beach buggy compared to these. Also, the Alpine is funky but again, not pretty and perfectly cohesive like these cars. 246 Dino? Citroen SM? The latter a bit big and elegant rather than pretty and tiptoeing on its wheels.

There is definitely a significant Colin Chapman influence around Gordon Murray's design ethos, amongst other muses.
Light weight, aero dynamics and one solution to more than one problem.
Not the prettiest result, at the end of the day, in my opinion. But, a thoughtful, innovative, detailed contribution to the automotive experience, nonetheless!
I'm sure the GMA product would be a hoot to drive!

Simple clean lines which are proportional and you can take a racing line on your side of the road, which rules out every modern sports car they have become to big to wide and so over weight and compensated with larger big performance engines. It’s just an engineering down hill spiral after that..
