This was the key information my instructor gave me which has aided my growth as an adult learner, which regularly had to sight read music. I've grown beyond first position now, but it still is the fundamental which helps me pay without trying to think what the note is.
Thank you SO much. I bought books and they assume I've never touched an instrument. This was literally exactly what I needed and nothing more. Awesome!
This is the first video I've watched talking about this subject that has made perfect sense. I appreciate the concise info, and even more so how you manage to explain it so simply!
I was 9 when i started playing the cello and did it up till i was 10 and then took a 3 year break with no practice or anything! i decided to take it back up again, this video really helped me remember all the basics ect.
Great video! The way you explain it on the cello strings makes it so easy to understand! Most teachers do not care and a year ago that i started playing the cello my teacher told me to read the notes myself ( i have never played any other instrument in my life i knew nothing about music or reading notes!) he told me do it by yourself it is a prerequisite! It was so hard almost made me quit… but i bought books and did it by myself… i was 47 y. o. That is why i appreciate greatly your video! Thank you please keep making such wonderful videos!!!
I adore the cello, my whole life, it is the most beautiful instrument ever created, but I know so little about it. I'm in the middle of my life, so I thought, "Why not see about finally learning about the cello?" I'm a beginner, I don't even own a cello -- yet. In grade school I played the flute, but do to a horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE teacher, I never progressed past the first year. I've watched many other beginner videos, and was ready to put this dream back on the shelf, but you made this SO EASY to understand, I'm hooked.❤️
That was a super helpful explanation and very well presented video. I'm glad that this was the first and probably only video on this topic to watch. Highly recommended to all as a pre-requisite to starting! Thank you!
I am going to be renting a cello soon. I have always struggled to read the bass clef (piano days), but this video was really precise and helpful! I am excited for this new adventure of learning the cello.
Great explanation! Getting reoriented on the staff is difficult for me at present time when I lose my place. I think this is a great explanation on how to quickly find where I need to be.
When I was having piano lessons in Greece we were always using do re mi fa sol la si do. Moving abroad I am hesitating to start a new instrument because everyhting is in A-G and i am very confused 😥 Especially on other clés (like the 3 different DOs). I am so glad you are mentioning both ways of reading then
When my youngest daughter started playing the cello when she was eight she couldn't remember the names of the strings. I came up with this for her: Crying Girls Don't Argue. She learned them instantly!! :D I think I prefer your version though. La, re, sol, do sounds much nicer.
Hi Jonathan, about a month ago I asked if you'd create a beginner's staccato tutorial. I've come a long way with my staccato in the past month, but I know that I can still benefit from your insights on the subject. And I'm sure that all of the other budding Cellists subscribed to your channel would get a great deal of value from it :)))
May I ask, as a newbie...it often appears to me that some cellists use the EDGE of their bows when playing, while still others use he flat of the bow. Am Imagining things?
What do you think of movable Do vs fixed Do method in solfege? Is the fixed one more useful given it's basically for learning an instrument (the cello in this case) and in determining the absolute pitches? I discovered I really need to work on that to advance more. I believe that working purely based on finger numbers confuses me the second there is a number missing :D Also I need to work more on my ear's musicality.
Depends on you location. For sight-singing, movable Do is better. For training internals (ear training), movable do is better. For learning modal music, Movable Do is best. For everything else, fixed do is best. Great question! (Cellos use fixed Do)
I was told by my teacher to leave because I was great at playing but I couldn't memorize the notes but if they showed me this I think my experience would be a lot different I think I'll pick up the cello again because I loved doing it but realized I was pulling every body else down
I'm a self made made in music, able to read music notation. This video is very clear and it was all that I needed to start cello. Big thanks...
Wonderful!

Glad to help you as always
It's very helpful when you show up close. Great learning video. 👍
Thank you SO much. I bought books and they assume I've never touched an instrument. This was literally exactly what I needed and nothing more. Awesome!
I've struggled with reading music for years, but this video just gave me a whole ton of confidence
happy to help you

We live in an international world

De rien
Thank you this is wonderful! Teaching my kiddos cello virtual to keep busy.
I would l9ve to play this instrument one day
Why. Is your
bow so tiny 😂
It's a Twinkle Bow, that's why!
Thanks for making these videos for us newbies - although I will admit it's a little distracting that you remind me of Jordan Schlansky on Conan.
Oh dear God, I’ve ordered myself a cello without ever having played any other instrument or read music, think I’ve bitten off more than i can chew 😂
It’s not too much. This instrument is comfortable to learn. You can do it
it‘s very useful! thank u~
3:50 When you drop the bass
Hi Johnathan, at what point when you play a note on the cello do you sort of shake your hand.
I have a cello today and I need help and you are a really good cello player
thank you, Sherkendra
Exelent .beautful tank you👏👏
Can you do a video to discuss when cello plays alto or tenor clef?
May I ask, as a newbie...it often appears to me that some cellists use the EDGE of their bows when playing, while still others use he flat of the bow. Am Imagining things?

@@CelloCoach fixed Do it is! Thanks
Thank you for using the "do-re-mi-fa" system. I get all confused with this ABCD stuff... it makes my head hurt.
glad to help you
i currently play trombone and they use the same clefs meaning when i switch to cello it won’t be as confusing
yes, we share some of the same range
Profesional cello teachers hold tiny bows
So there are only four possible notes, none else, and your not allowed to touch the strings ever?
J’aimerai que les sous titres soient en français. Cela m’aiderait beaucoup. Merci
Is the Purpose of, Holding The Strings Down With your Fingers, Is so you Don't Hit That String, When Using The Bow???
Beat explain
Ok

Try harder
Great. Why aren't there ads on this? Need to get more likes

Tu peut mettre les sous-titres
