I grew up playing viola and now I’m teaching myself cello and piano. I feel just hitting a key and being in tune is so easy but the piano chords are challenging!
Piano and guitar look intimidating due to equal temperament tune. It means that only the first and the fifth are in tune, while other notes are untuned.
I'm very happy we went to a music shop today and we rented a cello but the sound peg was loose so I have to wait a day or 2. I can't stop smiling!!!!!!!

i started playing cello like 3 days ago and ive been looking for videos like these and the hardest part for me is the bow like where u place your fingers on the bow
Hi I will be renting a cello with in the week, I am looking fwd to it I am a guitarist and pianist and this is great training as a pianist because the cello is the bass clef which on your piano is the left hand... just put the tapes on to mark the first position and you will be fine...that is what I will be doing
Hi, I’m just starting to relearn cello from school age and overwhelmed by the videos you’ve shared - thank you! I’m just wondering where is the best place to start? Also, could I please have a copy of the scales book you mention? I have emailed but not heard anything! Thank you so much - love your videos! :)

Hello Johnathan! your videos are truly inspiring and thank you for doing them! Will you be addressing second and third positions? I see you've already posted 4th position. Also, can you address how we read the positions, exercises to shift between them?
This entire channel is your tutorial. I've been teaching 23 years, and have taught absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of music how to play cello. Advice : start with the playlists - Basics of Cello and Essential Skills - while you enrich your knowledge base with Cello Coach talks, and of course subscribe to stay motivated and informed.
My fingers are on the correct position but the thumb is hard to be in postion. Sometimes I pressed my fingers down without the thumb. Am I wrong? Even changing strings, my thumb will not be in same position.
Dear Jonathan!thanks 4 ur video.i have a question, can you please help me??? how to play with different finger positions on g string without touching d string?😭 I tried a lot but I dont know which way is right...☹

What does a person do if their fingers won't "spread" far enough apart to put all fingers in first position at the same time? I would say that I have average-sized hands for a female, but the fingers just won't spread apart as yours do in the video, with one finger on each note of first position. Also, my pinky is kind of short and does not even reach the fingerboard when the other 3 fingers are in place, unless I cock my hand at a weird, painful angle. Any thoughts?
I have the same issue with hand spread, and I let my 1st and 2nd fingers lift up a little when needed to place the 4th down. Practice and time will make the hand stronger and more flexible. 😎
Ah yes, because every person is born knowing how every single note sounds, and can automaticly recognize when, whatever an f is, is playing. Or is this video just a joke?
It is not a joke. If you know anything at all about playing an instrument, you will know exactly what he means. Plus he said to have a tuner available so you can tell when you are right on the note.
@@DavidOgborn I don't know anything about playing an instrument, that's why I am here. No clue what a tuner even is. I don't get you music people, you have some delusion that everyone has been playing since birth and knows everything about music.
As a piano player, I find this really intimidating. Having no frets or keys is really unfamiliar for me.
not to worry
Right? i play guitar but the violin, cello and every string instrument without any frets are very intimidating

Yeah piano without frets is just weird

Move your thumb over to the left side of the neck, in the back. It will lift your palm higher and give you more clearance.

my grandparents randomly got my a cello because I said I wanted one a few months ago and I only know the violin 😭😭
Welcome to the journey, panino. It's more fun on our side of the orchestra
I wanna learnnn haha
My cello at some point in its life got a finger nail indention in the neck for first position lol
careful with the pencil, I just scratched into the fingerboard.
Classical string instruments seem to be a nightmare to learn! 😬
Nightmare might not be the right word, but any instrument takes years of practice
I only mark the first and the last. All four is too much.
Sometimes to learn the spacing for the middle digits, we need the extra tapes. Good point
