I've just started playing this great instrument at 40 years old, and this is a big help! Thank you very much Jonathan for your effort and great video's. Kind Regards from Holland
WHAT👏🏼AN👏🏼INSTRUCTIVE👏🏼VIDEO👏🏼✨😍
Merci beaucoup!
I’m currently having cello lessons but not ‘lessons’ cause our conductor just gives the whole orchestra a piece and gets mad when we I can’t play it right. He says “you don’t know how to read notes? Your old already!!”. I really want to learn but no one can teach me. Thank you for your vid, it really helps 💕
You're not old! (and you're welcome) School conductors become autocrats sometimes. I had a student who loved cello but had ADHD. He was also very kind and never pushed people to get to his chair come beginner of rehearsal. He was habitually late because he had only 10 minutes to jump out if his gym clothes, run across the school in 10 minutes and be in his chair ready and tuned with cello. Safe to say he was never on time and the conductor suffered him every day. To add insult to injury, the "conductor" has no prior string instrument experience or symphonic conducting appreciation. His bowings and fingerings were always bizarre and illogical, so when I found out he was a computer programmer, not a music educator by degree, it all made sense.
Just hang in there and ask me for any clarity on your parts.
Its a fu..king loser👍 you will find someone who takes the time for you😊👌 now days its all about time and mony unfortunately😥
Just find another conductor, some people are not worth their position.
Same for me.
This is the first video showing both your playing and the staff. Thanks so much!!!
Stick around, we are going to learn alot. :^)
Thank you so much for the detailed videos on how to read sheet music. I am a mom to a five-year-old on the Suzuki method, so I have to learn the cello with my daughter. Of course, we use the aural method, but without a musical background, I am grasping at invisible strings! Again, a shout out from Canada; you've gained a new cello student (plus my daughter by proxy). :)
Cool!
You are the best explanatory person!!!❤
Thank you 🙏🏼
Great Video, I have been taking cello lessons from a college professor, but in 11 months he has not explained what the notes are and how to read the pulses. You did that he could not explained in 11 months. Thanks a ton, for the great lessons. I am your humble servant.
Thank you, George!
* casually hugs cello while learning *
Same😂😂
True xD
You are amazing teacher and you are so professional. That helps me a lot. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I really appreciate that. Thank you.
You are a great teacher, you make learning music so easy. Thank you for these videos! :)
I repeated the little exercises many times and it felt so good when I finally matched your timing. Your explanations are very clear too. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
You're so welcome!
You made this so clear. Thank you!
god! this is so helpful!! how could i be so late to find this video!! this is way too helpful for a self-learner!!!
Glad you found the video helpful, Katarina. Hope you stick around and learn some more with us, sharing your story along the way!
Just got my cello in and having trouble understanding the sheet music. So happy you exist. You are a lovely teacher.
If there is anything that you might need clarified, please ask.
@@CelloCoach I am having difficulty switching from the inner strings to the outermost without adjusting my hold a bit. I'm not sure if that is a common issue for beginners or if I might be doing something wrong. If you have any tips or maybe a video I could watch to help at all that would be wonderful. Thank you.
So, the bow hold is needing adjustment when on the C and A strings? Sound like you may need more flexibility in your wrist
That is most likely the solution. I am still very much in the beginning stages of trying to learn.
Great job Jonathan, love your videos!
Thank you, Le Artista
Man you have talent for teaching
Dude ,I love you. Thanks !
Love you too ;-)
I appreciate it, thank you so much!
Hello Jonathan, I just started watching your videos. I am 66 years old. I am doing this for my own enjoyment. Can you give me some pointers as of what kind of cello should I buy?
Try to rent a cello from a local luthier, otherwise watch - th-cam.com/video/RuBzVmnQz68/w-d-xo.htmlsi=A5HU-pyOua2PNE1Y
Amazing education very detailed thank you 😊
Glad you learned something, emen
Omg, you are awesome! Thank you so much for the instructive video!😊
Thank you your the best
You are awesome thankyou so much
No problem, joshua ;-)
Hi Jonathan, the url is invalid for some reason
Good lesson . Thank u😀
You're welcome 😊
Thank u john
You are welcome, MLGSNIPERCATYT
Thank you for this, I'm a freshman starting out in JV orchestra with zero years of experience. It's quite scary.
Spikey. Oh man I bet I’m a freshman to and I have been playing the violin for 6 years
helpful video indeed. but "D" major's 2 sharps position isn't clear. where should I press on the string to get "D" major's sharps?
In 1st position the 3rd finger plays the F# on the D (2nd) string. The 3 plays a C# on the 1st string (A string) in the same position.
Very simple
Good
Hi Jonathan, I'm confused why did you play the C sharp on the G string at 5:52, shouldn't be on the A string!! . and thank you for your videos they are very helpful.
Because the C# (as displayed in the key signature) occurs on that exact note. Yes, there are other C#s found throughout the 4 octaves our cellos can play, so to be clear, I play exactly what is written : F# on the 2nd string and C# on the 3rd string
Thanks a lot but do you have any videos on songs? I'm still having a bit of trouble.
There are many lessons on this channel for songs of all levels.
Thank you
You're welcome
super easy
super simple
You're welcome!
I need a teacher who can. Do virtual session- any advice
Learn lots
good
Jonathon I am getting a 404 error on the download in google drive
Keep making videos please
I will sir!
But what about the lowest string -the c string. Why don't you refer to that one also? Isn't that c string the lowest string on the cello? I'm thinking of starting cello lessons but first I'm trying to learn the notes.
It would be nice to see what your right hand is actually doing please
i wonder why music is not written in pure number? Then it is super easy to read?
You are missing the C string you know
Good observation, Anastasia! Yes, you are correct. Though after teaching the open strings to novice cellists for many years, I decided to introduce the low C later. Not only is our thickest string the most physically challenging to play, it is also not as easy for the brain read the low stave notes as opposed to the notes above the stave. With that said, you still learn all pertinent info for the first measure of the Prelude in this series. :-)
Jonathan Humphries thank you. I actually know someone in my grade that plays the cello and I just wanted to make the remark because she has played the C string in class
