- Hey Neighbor! Today we are shedding some light on some recent changes to the USDA Hardiness Zones! Here in South Georgia, we went from Zone 8 to Zone 9a. Why did the USDA change the Hardiness Zone? The USDA updates the Hardiness Zones based on 30 years of data, which is re-evaluated and revised to ensure accuracy. Let's Grow Together and Get Dirty.

Here in Most Southern Illinois, for around ten years..I’d been saying…THEY say we are in zone 6b, but my garden,our presenting conditions seem like at least Zone 7. Now UDSA agrees with me. 💁🏻♀️

We are a small produce farm in southwest Oregon. The weather does what it does every year. We plant accordingly. I see no changes. What I do see is the government trying to convince us otherwise. They can take their climate change agenda & put it where the sun dont shine.

Hahaha, I remember that year! My Uncle kept running outside with a plastic ice cube tray to see how long it took to freeze! He was so excited. It was 3° here in NC.
We had seen as to the Hardiness Zone change a few days ago. It had always been confusing as to how they figure these zones. Still kind of is. Anyhow reading and such we now have a better understanding as to how it really works. We were 7B and stayed at 7B. Very pleased and seeing as to how Mama Hoss "allowed" the Old Goat a much needed R&R. We get to that grumpy old age and well we need a break every now and then. Then being the time of year Mr. Grinch is flashing himself behind Mama Hoss. Thank You for another fun video!

My zone changed from a 7b to a 8a here in central Arkansas. I bought the tip top Nasturtium seeds from y’all this spring. I grew and sold them at our farmers market this year. (They were a top seller) The grinch is on the shelf behind Mrs. Sheila.

I can honestly say that I don’t pay much attention to the USDA Zone maps. I just kinda go by what I know. I did, however, get burned by the “average first frost date” this year. I lost the prettiest patch of Lady Peas I’ve had in a long time due to the frost coming about a month early! It’s the risk we take heading into fall, and I’m fully aware of that risk. I use nasturtium leaves in place of pepper in salads, stir fries, etc. in summer. Beautiful and great to eat! I’m not saying A WORD about Greg’s knife and Flashlight thing!! I can relate, brother! I see that Old Grinch hanging out on top of that sign over Sheila’s shoulder. Thanks for a great show, as always! 😉
We changed from 9b to 10a. Although, cold temps were never my problem. Here, it's all about blazing hot sun and humidity. This summer was a constant battle. Now, my cool weather plants are thriving. And my tomatoes are still limping along and producing.
For Christmas I bought Green Stalk Planters for two of my daughters.
As for the garlic in your tea, wow!

Here in North Alabama we changed from being on the line between 7a and 7b to a solid 7b. Thank goodness, we were worried to death about it.... Ha ha Just kidding.

OMG! My car engine froze and cracked in 1983, too. I did check, drain, and add some antifreeze to the radiator but I failed to let it run and heat up enough to completely circulate. The freeze plug blew out but still cracked the head. 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix. Hard lesson learned.

Would ya look at that! I zoomed in on that map and my neighbors just 1/2-1 mile are in a micro climate. We’re still 8b but they are 9A! That is just SO interesting! I’m glad you shared because I was pretty flippant because it was coming from the US-Duh!
Supposedly Im a 10A now after the update lol, was a 9b but if anything its been trending colder the past few years, we never got frosts before we had the first frosts in 40 years over the last 5-6 years so i dont know how the government came to what they did zone wise.

I’m happy with my zone change from 7A to 8B.
One reason I threw caution to the wind and ignored Greg’s Thom onion planting guide. That Zone 7 and below should plant in spring. Well I ignored Greg’s advice, I wanted them onions in the dirt! I ordered mine, planted in October and they are absolutely thriving! That was zone 7 in October. So now I’m in 8 where I felt like I should have been all along. And only now following Hoss’s Thom onion guide😂 great show guys!

I was 18 in 1983 as well and I remember having snow on the ground during the entire month of January here in Southwest Missouri. That’s the only time I remember it staying so cold for so long.

I’m about 20 miles from Hoss Tools and they say we’re in 9a which is a lowest temperature of 20 degrees but last Christmas we were down to 16 . I have citrus trees that are zone 9 hardy and I covered them up well . I don’t really go by average temps but how cold it can get every so often because it only takes one extreme cold night to kill everything.
You would not believe the tomatoes I have on the vine . Our summer here in southeast Texas was so hot with no rain so I could not get them to grow. Here it is December and I got hundreds of them but they won’t ripen .
I’m in southwest Louisiana and I am in the same boat. Hundreds of giant green tomatoes. Hoping they will turn red soon.
I also have a thing for flashlights!! I don’t know why…I just do! Maybe 13 flashlights in Mr. Hoss junk drawer? The Grinch is behind Mrs. Hoss standing on naughty list sign! My zone changed from 7b to 8 a, not to sure how I feel about it yet!

We were married in 83. Our truck dashboard cracked one night when we were driving and trying to get warm. We were -30°F in Northern Illinois. My kids always thought we'd lived in the glacial age, now it's confirmed.

We went from 7b to 8A here in North Mississippi but the first frost date is December 1st for 8a . We’ve had more than a half dozen Frosts already. i’m sticking to 7b
Just read what the government said about the hardness zones. More or less they can’t say why they changed it. They say it all depends on this or that the weather ground light shade water how dry it is. Sounds too me just keep growing what you been growing.

I get burned every year by flirting with the first and last frost date. Seems I always get a hard frost after my last and before my first. This year a month before my first wrecked my fall beans and field peas

Nasturtium are super high in vit c and taste like horseradish to me. The flowers are more mild but the darker the flower, the more intense the flavor. We love them!

My neighbor, 3 miles down the road I in 9a now
I went from 9b to 10 b . Previously all of Manatee County was 9b now most of Manatee County is 10a pretty much just my neighborhood is 10b because we are surrounded by Sarasota bay. Last year when east of town was 27-28 the lowest we went was 37. I went to 37 twice last year. We went in the lower 40’s last night so I kinda think we really will have a colder winter. About 11 years ago around New Years we went down to 17 and for better part of 10 days stayed down in the 20’s day after day. Foundations were cracking because that was the first I ever remember day after day being freezing and staying 30’s 40’s for highs. I am old and 6 generation from this area of Florida.
This was funny, My husband is kind of a flashlight nut too, and he loves his Olights! I bought him one for Fathers day one year and it was all over with after that. As far as what I have found our zone did not change from 5B. Is that the Grinch on top of the naughty list sign?
I went from zone 8a to 8b, but I don't think thats going to change the way I do anything. It's still cold as I dont know what regardless of the zone change.
