My husband and I are shelling purple hulls every day now. I blanch them, dry them off, lay them on a large sheet pan lined with parchment, and freeze them. Once frozen I vacuum seal them in bags and put them back in the freezer laying flat. Once refrozen, I stand them up in a shallow box. They are easy to grab from the freezer. We finished last years the first of this month. Eating fresh now and freezing the rest as we go.
When I was a "youngin" we all used to sit out under the trees (pre-air condition days) to shell peas. As a kid I always had better things to do but was told that if I didn't shell I didn't get any peas to eat. Well, I shelled about a handful and say "that's all I wanted to eat" and off I went. I plant black-eyed peas every year. I just buy a 1 lb. bag at the store and they grow fine. I also plant a couple bags for the deer. They love em more than we do. Clover and black-eyed peas are a great deer plot for hunting season

Because of your youtube channel I tried Pink Eye Purple Hull peas a few years ago and we love them. I grow a bigger crop every year We prefer to can them for a quick dish. They grow great even up here in Ohio. Old goat is hang in front of the Row by Row sign.

I grew some purple hulls and loved getting the green pods as snaps for the first picking and then the next I let the pods turn purple and the peas were green then the next picking I let them dry for seed and dried peas for storage. I love this plant! It did great here in zone 8b east Texas! Now I’m hooked and I’m trying more varieties this fall for sure and definitely as a cover crop if I can manage it. 👍🏻They we’re so dang easy to grow! Unfortunately deer and bunnies loved them too so that can be a bummer. We’re putting up deer garden fencing now though just in time for my fall planting! 👍🏻
I checked out the new website. Nice! Been planning what seeds I need next year. Glad to have these Row by Row videos discussing varieties. I don't have much space and always plant California Blackeye Peas, as they are my family's favorite. I lost the entire crop this year to the drought, bugs and a monster of pumpkin plants. Lesson learned. But hey, I got pumpkins. lol. I did sow another round recently and will see if can get a good fall crop. Also, sowed the Purple Hull Pinkeye. Yalls tips and info are helping me with my list for the 2024 garden.
Agree and it has been a warm summer. Although it has cooled off a bit here. Yesterday 106 and today 106 again. Should one believe THEE Weatherman it is going to get back to "normal" highs for us the first of next week. We have purchased a decent assortment of peas as well as beans from Hoss Tools. Going to be planting them the next few days and seeing which is best for our area. Appears this may be the end of the Old Goat. Hanging there on the Row by Row Gardening Show placard. Former Tifton gal here. I've been debating on whether to plant my cowpeas or wait till spring here in the California desert. We are expecting 4+ inches of rain over the weekend. Think I'll get them seeded in tomorrow. We are expected to have a long, warm fall here. I love the brown crowders and purple hull peas like we used to grow there in South GA when I was growing up.
I always plant the Mississippi purple hull peas. Was fortunate to get some of your zipper cream peas that I will plant next spring. Also, received my Get Dirty hat. Very good quality!

We always planted a antique variety. I don’t know the name but it was a speckled pea. We really loved it but we finally lost it and never could find anything like it anywhere else.
I grew up raising and eating purplehull peas.. We grew all field pea varieties, but there's just something about purplehull.. They're the perfect match for fried okra.. I dump a ladle full on top of my okra.. I grew a small patch of purplehull this year and they filled a shelf in our freezer.. I wish I had seen this video prior to planting.. because apparently we grew bush type peas when I was a kid.. but these were indeterminate.. As they started vining I realized I should have trellised them.. so I build some impromptu tripods and they engulfed the tripods. I don't know the variety we grew but I saved seed.. Love your videos..

We use the Red Ripper Pea for chili...yes, beans/peas in chili. We're from Florida living in Appalachia and we put bean/peas in what we call chili. The Red Ripper Pea is the perfect size for chili's and other soups. A prolific grower and producer from spring to fall. Those plants do not give up; pests, storms, winds, rains. I get the Red Ripper Pea seeds from HOSS as per Danny and Wanda. I never knew about these peas until listening to Danny about the plants and Wanda on the canning. Thank you Hoss for all of the great quality seeds you've provided for my family. Thank you Danny and Wanda and Jason for the insight on Hoss seeds.
