for the people that (3 years later) are still having trouble with the exploding banshee, the banshe must be somewhat parallel to the ground, if the banshe's nose is pointing down, it won't let you board it
YO! Hold RB (Or whatever board/reload is) and THEN start firing. Do NOT just press reload/board, and Do NOT press it after you start firing. I read a comment from someone else that said to hold RB, and then I started holding BEFORE I began to fire. Got it first try with that strat. After multiple times spending close to 45 minutes trying this thing, without holding board.
If both the banshees keep exploding or disappearing, just keep trying. I got it on about my seventh attempt. And make sure you're holding down the board button the entire time you're shooting his feet. Oh, and like others have pointed out, it's much quicker if you start at Rally Point Charlie.
Glad I don't have to do this more than once after getting the achievement, unless 343 decides to make an ODST Anniversary in 2019 and make this an achievement again. 0_0 Thanks for the help.
Here's a little bonus I found while using the banshee, or rather, 2 mini-bonuses. 1. you can take the Banshee you capture in the spot in the vid through to the defense area if you drive firmly at the invisible wall blocking it then turn and do a barrel roll through it. 2. If you do you can quite easily shoot down one of the banshees with the first Phantom the other side, as you're entering the area, and if you do it with the plasma, not the fuel rod, at least for me it dropped from the sky and I was able to abandon the first banshee, which immediately exploded, and get in the one I shot down. Hope you have fun with this little tidbit.
i just found out why it wasnt working for me. if you stand to close "under" it and aim for the legs youre actually still hitting the banshee. make sure your shots are actually hitting the brute, indicated by the blood spray. once i did that it instantly worked for me. hope this helps
An easier way is to drive the tank into the gate once it opens and once the banshee start to shoot or notice you then reverse out the gate (you can kill your teammates before or after you reverse) and the banshee should follow you through the gate. Once this happens the banshee usually gets stuck in the left hand corner area where he followed you and cannot fly back into the gate. Then do exactly what Maka says and shoot the feet with your smg and hold the button you use to get in vehicles.
To everyone who's trying to do this on PC: Lower your FPS. I had it locked @ 180 and I was too slow every time (even if I held the "board vehicle button", which is "E" by default). But when I switched my FPS to be locked to 60, I did it first try. The boarding prompt might be tied to fps, in terms of duration. So I literally had triple the amount of time by lowering the FPS. I hope this helps my PC-bros getting the achievement! ;).
I'm doing this on PC and I have my FPS uncapped, and I was able to do it the first time I got the banshee to get stuck on the ground. The problem for me is that the achievement didn't pop up for some reason.

Took a while but soon as you rid his shield, go through the doorway and find a plasma pistol from a dead grunt then head back and shoot him whilst holding the bumper. due their being with reload you should get it right away
Weaken the brutes shields and then use a plasma rifle that way you can hold the board button while shooting at the same time. You don’t have to worry about reloading.
While doing this with a friend, he got stuck in the banshee after it blew up and he was piloting the destroyed part of the banshee. Fucking hilarious. XD
Awesominator97 MC don't know about halo mcc since I haven't played it but bumper jumper was the the most popular setting among the hardcore players back in the halo 3 days. The reason for this is that you could jump (LB) and aim at the same time giving you a small advantage in BR battles for example without really sacrificing anything else. On the regular controller scheme as you know, you had to let go of the left stick for a small amount of time in order to jump and then find your opponent with the aim again which loses you time.
This doesnt work for me, some times the banshee follows me, sometimes it randomly explodes in the air, sometimes even when it does get caught in the back ally and I start shooting the brute inside of it, it explodes.

You need to HOLD DOWN the button to enter vehicles as you are shooting the brute. It cancels out the explosion and allows you to pilot the banshee. I literally just did that and got the achievement.

Adrien Martinezzz & Cor7ezz Here's how you do it: Notice the legs of the Brute inside the banshee have armour. Use the SMG til he loses his armour. Once that happens, waste all the SMG ammo without shooting him (aim for the sky, or the floor), saving only the last magazine. That way you can hold your action button to board the banshee without it making you reload. Use that last magazine to kill the Brute (he has no shields now) while holding down the action button to board the banshee. That's it.
omg this is so horrible. I'm holding the button to get on the banshee and as soon as he dies the banshee blows up. this achievement isn't worth a broken controller
Easier Method: Get plasma pistol of any grunt Hold down trigger and fire an EMP blast at the banshee it's disabled for a couple of seconds hop on once it's down Problemo solved.

Best to use Easy difficulty and have the skull for increased enemy awareness of the player. Only took me 2 tries.

For those with the issue of the banshee exploding...hold down the trigger you use to board the banshee as you shoot. Don't push, hold it.

I lured the banshee on foot with my tank on the flat spot and it worked for me. Just shoot for a little bit while holding the get in button

Took a while but soon as you rid his shield, go through the doorway and find a plasma pistol from a dead grunt then head back and shoot him whilst holding the bumper. due their being with reload you should get it right away
