  • Up Fire subs? Downfire subs? Which is better? Which one do you want? What sounds best? What's loudest?
    Hey guys! I've been in this industry for over 20 years now and I get asked this question all the time by customers. So we had the chance and the opportunity to actually do some measurements and try and to get some answers.
    Let me start by saying that this is not the most ideal of testing setups, so I'm sure this will get some criticism. We just wanted to get some basic measurements and information to give customers a way to tell what the differences and advantages are between the options. With the test equipment we used, you can do your own measurements and also use it to tune a DSP system in your car without spending a lot of money,
    We had a local customer in for us to do a subwoofer installation on his Ram, and we decided we could use his setup to run some measurements. We ran one of our upfiring ported enclosures and just flipped it over on some 2" spacers to get the desired effect. To seal it, we jam packed the port with microfiber rags and left over carpet to greatly reduce the airflow coming out of the port without making any permanent changes to the enclosure. It's not ideal for a perfect test, but it greatly changed the way it performed and sounded.
    I hope this helps answer some questions and helps you on your choice of enclosures for your truck. Hit us up in the comments if you have any questions. Thanks!

    From the graph I like sealed up fire and ported down fire.

    You cant justify sealed or ported in the same enclosure ???????

    The other advantage of downfire, please measure the impedance live while playing. Does downfire reduce impedance rise that happens naturally, increasing available power produced?

    awesome box built. i have a 2024 dodge ram would like one like that for one.12 inch or 10 inch. do you sell the measurements and design? or how much to build a enclosure like that?

      That enclosure was $425, but we have a lot of different enclosure options for that truck.

      do u carry an enclosure for one 12" sub. I don't want it to take all the room under the back seat.

    I see this is an older video, I hope you've changed your REW settings.
    I don't know how you're actually reading anything on that graph.
    I found that pink noise is fine for 100hz and up, but for 100hz and down it's better to do a sine wave sweep.
    Set your mode to 1/48th octave.
    Smoothing to 1/3.
    Averages - none.
    Then run a sine wave sweep.
    The results using pink noise are going to be a little different, but if you prefer that then:
    Set your mode to 1/48th octave.
    Smoothing to 1/3 or 1/6.
    Averages - 4
    Then you can overlap the results and see exactly the differences.

    i have a rav4 2016 should i face my ported subwoofer to the trunk? or face it to the driver? cause it rattles hard lol

      If the enclosure will let you, enclosure pointed up tends to work almost as well as facing the lift gate and that will keep all that pressure from firing right at the panel.

      The video isn't about how a certain truck works or sounds with up or downfiring. The principals carry over to all trucks, and some SUV applications.

    You should…. Fire the subs into the cabin instead of up or down…

    • @Netaudiowf
      @Netaudiowf  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Firing into the cabin should get you close to the same result as firing up. The potential problem with forward firing is you're moving the speakers further forward into the cabin and that can cause potential cancellation issues. The further towards the rear of the truck they are the less cancellation potential you have. It's all about the sound waves and how they react inside that space. The main advantage of forward firing is more airspace in the enclosure since you aren't having to allow clearance for the seat or floor.

    • @milesbachelor8747
      @milesbachelor8747 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t experienced truck bass, but it makes sense to face forward. Less potential cone area but the most usable wave travel

    • @Netaudiowf
      @Netaudiowf  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@milesbachelor8747 Low frequencies in the sub bass region are super long, so firing forward won't offer any benefit for wave travel. The seat doesn't cause any sort of obstruction because those sound waves are so long that it just cuts right through the seat foam with no effect.

      Im building my 5th subwoofer center console for my Power Wagon as I've been experimenting myself in last 2 years.
      1st console was 2 12in P3s Sealed downfiring. It was decent.
      2nd console was same but ported out the back.... Played lower with more output.
      3rd console was ported upfiring. I liked it but felt bass was in your face.
      My new console is actually 2 12in EVLs on a skv2.4500.1 amplifier. It's 4.5 Cubes Net with port area 72in tuned 30hz. Subwoofers and port are facing up.
      I think I'm going to add a bored 2 in above Subwoofers, so kinda same idea as downfiring? I'm going to make it removable. Is this a dumb idea? Lolalso what's a good clearance distance between Subwoofers and floor / Bored? Any recommendations welcome

    Great and interesting video. I just ordered a down-fire 8" Kicker with reflex port. I wonder how the reflex port would change things? Thanks guys

    • @Netaudiowf
      @Netaudiowf  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by reflex port. If you just mean ported then that is discussed in the video. A ported enclosure is technically a bass reflex enclosure, that's the engineering term for it, so I'm assuming that's what you're referring to.

      @@Netaudiowf Yo! I mean the membrane Kicker has in some of their down-firing subs that works with the sub's movements but just opposite. The ones looking like there are two subs, but one of them is just a membrane. Would be very interesting to see how that changes your numbers. Cheers!
