This album was extremely underrated and vilified due to society’s response to Madonna doing things that “women shouldn’t do”. It was of course later praised for the iconic & brilliant 💎 it was and still is 😏
i can see you enjoying ray of light, music and confessions on a dance floor! madonna discography is definitely worth the listen, it's also super diverse!
Listening to this review is a reminder of why Madonna is so influential....she had this knack for transmitting really compelling musical and conceptual ideas into the mainstream.
''In This Life'' was the demo version used for the final product. Some of the songs have few minors change (Bad Girl, Bye Bye Baby) and few of them have major changed during the making (''Words'', ''Erotica'', ''Deeper and Deeper''). But for ''In this Life'', no change between the demo and the final product. After she recording her vocal, she decided to not make any changes in the demo and just recording the orchestra of Philadelphia to complete the feel of this song. ''In This Life'' was written in memory of two friends of her died of AIDS and was her most personal song of the album, with ''Secret Garden''. ''Secret Garden'' was about her own vagina. She recording her vocals of Most of the songs of this album in one take.
I grew up as a huge fan of Madonna (I was a child of the 80’s). Similarly to Bjork, she reinvented herself for each album. Ray of Light is one of my favorite albums of hers, followed closely by Confessions of a Dancefloor. Crossing my fingers that you will eventually react to those 2 albums as well.
"oh man, she's horny" is the most astute analysis of "where life begins" i've come across- kudos! if you are ever curious about how the erotica era translated to the stage or the screen check out: the official music video for "bad girl" directed by david fincher in 1993, "fever" live from the girlie show down under in 1993, or "erotica" live from the confessions tour in 2006
If the 80s was Madonna at her most popular then the 90s was Madonna at her most interesting. Arguably Madonna's most artistically rich, eclectic, surprising decade with fantastic music videos throughout the years. She changed her look the most during this time. Erotica (#3) and Deeper and Deeper (#8) were top ten hits from the album. Fever is a cover. Words has the awesome layered definitions toward the end. The jazzy and poetic Secret Garden is a revelation. Did You Do It? is my least favorite track. The inclusion of that Waiting remix was pointless. It should've been replaced with Shame or any of the unreleased demos from that era. Love The Girlie Show Tour - such fun! Each of the five music videos for this album are great: Erotica (dark & sexy), Fever (trippy), Deeper and Deeper & Bad Girl (both narrative and cinematic), Rain (clean & fresh). The House remixes for Erotica, D&D, Fever, and the epic 12 minute Up Down Suite remain some of her best.
Madonna's musical development from 1983 to 2005 is unparalleled. The albums that followed are amazing too, but personally I think they went into above standard US style releases. I agree, to really appreciate Madonna as the artist, songwriter and producer that she is a chronological examination is needed, along with an idea of the social and musical landscape of the time that she released these records.
Back in 1992 when I bought this album and I didn't really understand English I fought Where life begins is such a beautiful romantic song. Once I understood the lyrics I was sure I am going to hell! :-)
All of her albums are different. This album has a great vibe to it. I've always liked her music and artistry and became a fan with her masterpiece album Ray of Light. Enjoyed your commentary and eaction!
I would have rated the song Rain a 9. I love the juxtaposition of her warm vocal performance contrasts with the cool feeling of the musical production. This song was inspired by the novel Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte. I love the music build up before and the spoken word part with the 2 separate spoken word tracks interweaving each other. Very beautiful and poetic song and it's my favorite song on the album.
- Colonel Sanders is the mascot/founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken/KFC. The commercials used to say Finger Lickin Good! - Can you make a fire without using wood? Wood is a euphemism for erection. You’re using your tongue not the “wood” - I’m glad you brought your raincoat - raincoat being a popular euphemism for condom or rubber. I think it’s beginning to rain meaning these some moisture going on 😂
Great reaction! Your reaction to, Where Life Begins, made me laugh out loud. Love your facial expressions. 😂 This is a great album! I really hope you do more Madonna. The music videos for this album are really good too! Thanks for posting! Stay safe! ✌🏻😉✌🏻
Madonna is the most interesting female solo artist ever in my opinion, and my all time favourite singer. She is the best selling female solo artist of all time. Erotica is not my favourite album. Still being a musical masterpiece, It's a little bit repetitive musically and lyrically. Like A Prayer, Ray of Light, Music, Confessions On A Dance Floor, Bedtime Stories (with the Bjork written title track), True Blue - my top five Big M albums 🙂
Nice reaction, thank you! I never heard anyone saying this album was triphop though, more swing beat. Madonna was not colaborating with UK based producers/mucisians at this point and in 1992, when Erotica came out the ‘triphop’ scene was still very underground in the UK. But it is an intersting pov and it shows there was something in the air because I understand why you would call it that. Anyways, the greatest music defines or denounces genres, in my opinion. I think that Secret Garden is not so different on this album. I like to listen to the title track Erotica, Bye Bye Baby, Where all Life Begins, Waiting and Secret Garden and that is a perfect little conceptual master piece for me, where Erotica sets the tone and theme and Secret Garden concludes and combines everything, lyrically and musically❤
I see what you mean with not being trip-hop in the genre for that time, while I see some sound ideas in there that goes into trip-hop (I heard a lot of trip-hop it‘s one of my favourite genres :D) Especially with those great hip-hop beats and lo-fi string/sax samples
@@luggareviews It’s an amazing ‘genre’ where a lot of styles collide, so I do understand how Erotica could fit in there. To understand how different and ground breaking this album was for someone this big in the mainstream pop world it would be interesting for you to listen to the Like a Prayer album and hear the huge shift. It’s just not that interesting for you I think, judging on you reactions. If you would want to do more Madonna I think Ray of Light(William Orbit co-production) an American Life(Mirwais co-production) and Confessions on a Dancefloor(Stuart Price co-production) would be the most interesting to listen to. With Erotica, these albums are the most conceptional and musically cohesive and interesting and give you a good scope of Madonna’s evolution, song crafting and diversity through out her long career. I also really enjoy your Björk reactions. Maybe you can do some of your favourite triphop albums, although that wouldn’t be first-time-listening-reactions😉
Yay, Madge! Do Prince's "Come", please, please,.please. I love your reactions. Your eyes widen when you read or hear something shocking, and that's funny to see. 😂
American Life has some amazing moments on it, that raises it far above the average pop album from 2003. It doesn't grab me the way Ray of Light, Music or Confessions do. I think that Mirwais' production might have been a bit much for an entire project and if some of those wonderful songs had been touched by Stuart Price or William Orbit then those tracks would have been given the room to soar that they deserved.
Madonna considers herself primarily a visual artist and there is nobody who can touch her when it comes to music videos. From Material Girl onwards her videos become stories, questions and are far away from the sales tools that the medium was originally meant to be. Erotica has some of the most beautiful pieces of film ever made along with the following videos from Bedtime Stories and I Want You from her Something To Remember compilation album.
@@helgafever768 I agree about Like A Prayer but the prefer Confessions, Music, American Life, Rebel Heart and even MDNA over Bedtime Stories. I adore half of Bedtime Stories but the other half not as much because I don’t like R & B
Sanctuary and Bedtime Story, more songs are co-produced by Babyface who worked with TLC, Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston amongst others. That’s why the album is very 90’s RnB sounding. An audience pleaser after the controversy of Erotica. Madonna has been coproducing her own music since the Like a Prayer album, which she doesn’t get much credit for.🙏🏽
Okay here goes with the Production Details on Bedtime Stories: Nellee Hooper and Madonna - Survival, Inside Of Me, Forbidden Love & Bedtime Story. Madonna and Dallas Austin - Secret, Don't Stop, Sanctuary. Madonna and Dave "Jam" Hall - I'd Rather Be Your Lover, Human Nature, Love Tried To Welcome Me (A Beautiful Song BTW) and Babyface and Madonna - Take A Bow. Remixes on the LP were Sanctuary which was mixed by Nellee Hooper and Don't Stop which was mixed by Daniel Abraham. Hooper has sole production credit on Madonna's collaboration with Massive Attack I Want You, that was recorded for inclusion on the Marvin Gaye tribute album "Inner City Blues." Hooper was also meant to co-produce Madonna's Ray Of Light album but she realised that the sound she was more interested in pursuing was more inline with a tape that was sent to her record company by William Orbit.

Hey Lugga... You bring up Trip-Hop many times in your review, so I'd like to propose you review the album 'Becoming X' by Sneaker Pimps - An absolutely iconic landmark album in trip-hop, and the band's only album with original vocalist Kelli Ali, before changing line-up and sound. A great follow-up review would then be Kelli Ali's solo album 'Ghostdriver' (2020) which was a return to trip-hop via some amazing noir jazz/blues/electronic pop. Two real masterclasses in original & modern Trip-hop by one of the voices that really made the genre iconic. x

It's odd to say someone has to exist at the time an album was released in order to enjoy or not enjoy it. If anything, it's great that Lugga is experiencing this album in the present day--and not during the hype and distraction that caused a majority of people to unfairly trash this album, resulting in lower sales of the album compared to her 4 previous albums that sold more. Lugga's reaction is honest and unbiased and it's purely based on the music and not the scandal and controversy. Madonna herself realized this too when she released her ballads compilation a few years later, saying she wants the music to be the focus. Lugga accomplished that. Lugga gets a 10 from me.

Madonna herself realized this too when she released her ballads compilation a few years later, saying she wants the music to be the focus. Lugga accomplished that. Lugga gets a 10 from me.
